LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

In August we had the crowning of our ‘Britomart King’ with Luke Shore from the Northern Steamship winning the Crown for Downtown. It was a close fought battle with only a couple of points in it. This event galvanised the Britomart community into action to raise money for a worthy cause and has since seen a lot of positive spin off for the whole of Britomart. Great to see the three new tenants unpacked and ‘in business’ all very ‘cool’ stores adding additional flavour to our current retail offering. Check out more details on page 19 or rock on up, introduce yourself and check it out in person, you’ll be glad you did. This issue we introduce you to two more Bluewater people, Jeremy (the bald guy that is always in Santos) and his better (work) half Andrea his gorgeous PA… behind any decent leasing director there is always the PA keeping it all together!

l

Hope you enjoy the second issue of Scenezine and the approximately six extra minutes of reading time our additional 8 pages will bring you.

Light hearted sparring between Britomart tenants led to the first ever Crown for Downtown at Britomart; a charity boxing event which was held on Thursday, August 2.

FOR

CROWN

DOWNTOWN

It all started with banter between Burton ‘The Real Deal‘ Worth, from Aveia Gallery and Bar in the Levy Building, and Luke ‘The Shore Thing’ Shore from Northern Steamship’s Brew Bar, who both train with New Zealand welterweight champion, Justin Potter at City Boxing, based in the Quay building. Justin suggested that instead of mucking around, the duo should face up to a genuine ‘spar’ for a good cause. Bluewater Management soon came on board with assistance for the venue, the Britomart Pavilion, and with event management. Through the generous donations of time, money and product from a number of Britomart tenants a grand total of $16,686 was raised.

AT

Leigh Williams, from Insight Creative at Sofrana House, is a weekly volunteer at Ronald McDonald House, so as a consequence of her involvement, part of the evening’s proceeds ($8,868) went towards a gym for families to use while staying at Ronald McDonald House, Auckland. The balance of the funds raised ($7,818) went to Central Auckland Boxing to help cover the costs of sending a select team to the Queensland Golden Gloves Title in Brisbane in August, a pre-trainer to the New Zealand Championships in September. Over 350 people filled the Britomart Pavilion to watch the 9 bout boxing event and experience the incredible atmosphere. Congratulations to Luke ‘The Shore Thing’ Shore and his Northern Steamship Brew Bar team for taking away the ‘Crown’ and the team title. The next event is planned for mid next year with contenders already putting their names in the ring! A big thanks to the sponsors below for making Crown for Downtown possible:

RANDOMBITS The Bluewater indoor netball team has proudly retained their team namesake for the 2nd consecutive season… ‘Blueballs’! Currently only with one breakdown in the unified strength of the team… They are undefeated!!!! They make other teams look like sloths on court as they run rings around them! As they continue with their web slinging, spiderman action on court their opposition get stage fright… they shoot… they score… defence is strong… attack is stronger. Competition is fierce. Its all about the counter attack, shoot from the hip, counter strike team talk that revs them up before each game. Locked and loaded they are ready to take out the season…

13

l

RANDOMBITS The NetWork Visuals team have been hard at work again branding Rally New Zealand at Mystery Creek. The event culminated in a Rally finish separating 1st and 2nd after 380km by .03 seconds. NetWork Visuals coordinated not only all the branding but the Official Finish Ceremony that was broadcasted live to 800 million on EuroSport.

p

Not to rest on their laurels they are currently looking after Fashion Week and are in planning for the Adidas Auckland Marathon.

We welcome our latest addition to the Britomart family, Pasion Por Tango, an interactive dance zone located in level 2 Barrington Building, 10-12 Customs St East. In fact we would go as far as to say this was beyond a zone and could be classified as an experience. Boundaries are crossed as Pasion Por Tango offer not only tango lessons, but also events, live music & performances, art exhibitions and tango and South American movie screenings.

14

The team at Pasion Por Tango pride themselves on their authentic Argentinean tango prowess with their artistic director, tango show dancer and teacher, Diego Echenique (above). Well done to Explore NZ for being legends and giving Delyse and Dayle a voucher to ride on an America’s Cup boat on their next trip to Auckland. Delyse and Dayle instigated the fund raising for the Ronald McDonald House Auckland gym, which was one of the chosen charities for Crown for Downtown at Britomart.

Learning how to Tango has never been so easy! Lessons are available as workshops in technique, tuition for small groups and private lessons as well as their regular timetable, available from www.pasionportango.com. The most challenging decision the tango apprentice will need to consider is which style of Tango they wish to pursue… Tango Salon, Tango Milonguero or Tango Nuevo! It is now possible to live, breathe and feel Buenos Aries right here in Britomart… through the energy & vitality of Pasion Por Tango!

DEVELOPMENT

DOWNLOAD

Oriental An extension to the original Britomart Precinct is the inclusion of the Oriental Markets site to the east of Britomart Place. Development of the Oriental site will include the construction of a multi-level car parking and mixed-use development providing ancillary services to the other Britomart developments. Accommodating approximately 1200 car parking spaces the development will provide valet parking services for Britomart tenants and short-term public/visitor parking. Valet drop-off and collection points will be located at various points around the Precinct with the vehicles being stored in the Oriental car park. In terms of other uses, a key aspect of the development is the intention to ‘sleeve’ the building with active uses such that the above-ground car parking levels are only visible from Scene Lane. In particular, the Quay Street frontage is occupied by retail tenancies on the ground floor and apartments above. The Britomart Place frontage is sleeved by retail activities on the ground floor with the exception of the south-west corner which will provide entertainment facilities.

15

Westpac Charter House Progress on the new 8 storey Westpac office building has been flying along with the Hawkins team hitting a number of key construction milestones with the completion of the sheet-piling, excavation, and the first concrete pour for the basement foundations. The new building will be fully integrated into the existing Charter House and the design team has been working to retain, and where necessary reinstate, the classic architectural fabric of the building. Preparation for the integration has seen the internal strip-out of Charter House completed leaving the way clear for the first installation of the structural beams and columns and enabling the commencement of the repairs to the façade and windows. East Buildings The East Building is a new mixed use development fronting Takutai Square, Galway Street, Britomart Place and Tyler Street and spanning across the central walking street “Te Ara Tahuhu”. Built substantially as two twelve-storey buildings the development includes ground floor retail, eight levels of commercial office per building plus three levels of luxury residential apartments located on the eastern end of the site. A significant component building will be a vibrant and contemporary undercover, ground floor retail area bordering Te Ara Tahuhu walkway and integrating the Britomart station entry and exits. The mix of retail is likely to include high-end food and beverage, beauty and fashion stores. We anticipate commencing construction of the development in winter 2008 with completion in early spring 2010.

Affordable housing, sustainable architecture and green buildings will be among the hot topics of the second ever Architecture Week Auckland to be held from October 15 – 19, 2007. Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, organised by the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA), Architecture Week will celebrate and explore the history, people, places and spaces that make Auckland the city it is. Most of the events will be held in or near the Britomart Pavilion, with all events (excluding the Steven Ehrlich lecture) open to the public and free of charge.

l

Exhibitions and installations, which were popular with the Auckland public last year, will make a return to this year’s schedule. City workers and passers-by will enjoy watching the future stars of architecture transform the Britomart precinct with their Urban Spoiler project, which will see students from each of the three Auckland architectural schools design and build three giant sculptural pavilions from scaffolding materials.

During the evening Britomart will come alive, with images from Auckland architecture firms and students projected onto the exterior walls of buildings. There will be lectures and debates (discussions) at 8am, 12pm, 5.15pm and 6pm daily on hot topics such as affordable housing and green buildings.

It’s expected that large crowds will gather on Friday evening for the Architecture Week Auckland 07 closing parties.

FASHIONONLINE

This month’s clean laundry is from Debut. New dresses from Catherine Hensby and Pucci with abstract patterns mixed in with a bit of floral. Floral is also in for men’s shirts and plenty of fresh colour. Tee shirts again will be hot and an easy buy decision if pennies are tight, some cool prints from local designers Robot, Commune and Kowtow. New kids on the block this summer for Debut are Muchacha, an off shoot of Zara with some funky little tops, and the Louche label with its beautiful silk fabrics in tops, dresses and skirts, all for the girls. For the boys, the relaunched Hemisphere label with beautiful tailored pants and great fitted shirts.
