LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome to the first edition of Scenezine - where we introduce you to the Britomart of today and give you a hint of where it’s heading. As we all know places are not just a collection of buildings, but also a collection of people and through these people the ‘place’ takes on a complex personality of its own. We will therefore introduce you to Britomart though our people, both those working on it and in it. Auckland Festival has now packed it’s containers and gone from our door step. It was great to have the artists amongst us, ‘Bath Guy’ (for good reason) was the talk of the precinct followed closely by the ‘Sword Chick’ (once again for good reason) and we applaud them all for their various talents that most of us would not see on a daily basis. We have no ‘letters to the editor’, how could we when this is our first edition?! BUT we do invite comment, contribution, and letters for the next edition in July - email us at info@britomart.org. The best letter will not be winning a coffee machine but we would consider shouting you a coffee at Santos. Enjoy your quick flick!

THIS IS A PAGE 09 ABOUT ART CUT COLLECTIVE PUBLIC ACCESS This exhibition sees Auckland’s most entrepreneurial stencil artists bring the “street inside” for their first exhibition (following their debut in Napier) at a high end commercial Auckland gallery. Having gained credentials through many public commissions, invitations and shows in New York and Melbourne, we finally get the chance to see our own home grown talent put the stencil on canvas. This show draws on the stencil medium as a means to producing a wide range of aesthetic and communicative techniques. United by the stencilling practice, each artist brings their own approach, innovation and background, resulting in a cohesive yet varied collection of works with an underlying love of the medium, the immediacy and spontaneity it requires. With the ability to reproduce using the stencil, many parallels are drawn with the tradition of printmaking. Both mediums employ the ability to generate fixed image outcomes. Time is usually a luxury, so for The Cut Collective to premeditate and plan a show, entirely new elements enter the works. More controlled techniques and planning often lead to using the brush rather then solely the stencil taking the works into the “fine art” arena Public Access looks at both the opportunities and limitations that an environment can have on site specific work. There is an ongoing debate surrounding public vs. private; gallery vs. street. The show presents an opportunity for the artists to employ a more relaxed and complex approach to their stencil-based art whilst on the other hand, restricting their work to the four walls of a gallery space.

STANBETH AND EXCELSIOR BUILDINGS 22 – 26 CUSTOMS STREET EAST
CHARTER/CUSTOMS DEVELOPMENT 44 – 58 CUSTOMS STREET EAST
Later this year Bluewater anticipates commencement of the conservation and refurbishment of Excelsior House and Stanbeth House. Located at a key entry point into the Britomart Precinct, the completion of these buildings will redefine the corner of Customs St and Commerce St in line with the recently completed Levy Building.
Works on the new Westpac offices have begun in earnest. The site, located in the South-Eastern quarter of the Precinct, is now fully hoarded and has been handed over to our construction company Hawkins.
The upper floors of Excelsior House contain the first release of residential apartments within Britomart. These apartments have been designed in a loft style whilst retaining key heritage elements such as exposed brick walls, timber flooring and generous stud height, and on the top floor timber sarking ceiling. On Galway St the building has been extended to incorporate a new deck and indoor terrace, providing indoor/outdoor flow. The upper floors of Stanbeth House will primarily be office suites, with a function /display centre on Level 1, and like Excelsior, will retain the key heritage elements. In line with Excelsior, Stanbeth House will also enjoy an extension to the building on Galway St, providing outdoor space for the office suites. A key component of the refurbishment is to introduce new and exciting retailers to Britomart, The combination of the two buildings has created a further six retail shops at ground floor. The mix is likely to include food and beverage, and fashion retail. If you would like further information regarding the development please contact Jeremy Priddy: JEREMY.PRIDDY@BLUEWATERCO.COM
The new Westpac office will stand 8 levels high and will include an internally accessed basement car park for around 80 cars. The new building will be fully integrated into the old Charter House and will display classical architectural elements which can be seen throughout the precinct on some of our heritage buildings. Another large part of this project has been environmental sustainability as both Bluewater and Westpac are committed to building practices which promote this. As a result, we have been watching the emergence of the Green Councils’ Green Star Rating Tool with anticipation as we will be using the tool to gauge both buildings environmental foot print and efficiency. Further construction will continue in the coming weeks with the setting of the sheet piles due to commence at the beginning of May and the basement excavation works following shortly after. We anticipate completing construction in the summer of 2008, ready for Westpac to take possession of the site to begin their fitout.

As the Britomart Precinct undergoes changes and transforms, so does Old Sofrana House. As of 10 July 2007 the ground floor of Sofrana changes from a busy event space to a retail space when Eon Design Centre joins the Britomart Family. The final event to be held on 7 July 2007 is REPREZENT @ BRITOMART SOFRANA, an event that has recently been rebranded into a premium up-market urban styled experience. Both of the event spaces at Sofrana will be utilised with two rooms of new skool and old skool Hip Hop, RnB, Funk, Soul and live music from DJs, producers and live vocalists both locally and internationally. In line with the rebranding REPREZENT is now held annually, so if this sounds like your flavour come and check out REPREZENT @ BRITOMART SOFRANA for 2007 and pay homage to the evolution of the Britomart Precinct and farewell to the Britomart Sofrana event space. Tickets can be purchased at Real Groovy, Route 66, iticket.co.nz or by texting REPREZENT to 858.
