figure/ground

the relationship between two objects using depth of space.

similarity

things that look alike. shape, color, & texture can show objects to seem as if they belong together in a group.

proximity

similar objects located close to each other are seen to be a group.

closure

the feeling of needing to close or complete incomplete figures.

continuance

a group of figures arranged to look as if moving or continuing direction.

translation

compositional figures sat next to each other with an even amount of space between each one.

rotation

a symmetry operation that turns a figure in a continuance pattern.

reflection

a symmetry operation that shows a figure & then rotates it 180째.

glide/reflection

an element shown & shown again at 180째 & slid up or down to form a pattern.

dilation

a change in size between compositional elements at regular intervals.

symmetric balance

the arrangement of compositional elements with an equal balance.

asymmetric balance

irregular & unequal arrangements between compositional elements relative to a central axis.

ambiguous balance

vague & indefinite relationships between compositional elements.

neutral balance

random objects in no apparent order, lacking emphasis & contrast.
