The slogan “Life at it’s Peak” was created and gifted to Manitou Springs by Sarah Gray Erickson. Sarah, an aspiring writer, grew up in Manitou Springs. After reading about the Colorado Springs search for a slogan, Sarah was inspired to submit this great description for Manitou Springs. The design was presented at a membership meeting in 2012 and trademarked for exclusive use by the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce, Visitors Bureau & Office of Economic Development. Colorado’s First Resort Destination The history of Manitou Springs is forever linked with the springs around which it was founded. The source of these famous waters lays deep underground in a system of cavernous aquifers. As the ancient water erodes the surrounding limestone, carbonic acid is created which gives Manitou’s springs their special effervescence. This natural carbonation forces the water back to surface through cracks in the rocks, where it absorbs high concentrations of sodium bicarbonate (soda) and other healthy minerals.

6

Manitou’s History

Considering the picturesque location of the springs in a forested box canyon at the base of Pikes Peak, it is no wonder the Native Americans considered the location sacred. The eruption of bubbles in the mineral water was considered the breath of the Great Spirit and offerings of beads and fetishes were left in gratitude. The soothing effects of the soda water on sour stomachs and dry skin attracted not only the Mountain Utes, who wintered here each year, but the Cheyenne, Arapahoe, and other Plains tribes. All were free to share in the gifts of the waters without the worry of conflict.

Manitou’s History Early Explorers Lieutenant Zebulon Pike may be given credit for first writing about the peak that would bear his name, but he managed to miss the wondrous springs at its base. That privilege was left to the Long Expedition of 1820. Dr. Edwin James, the team botanist, not only discovered the health-

giving mineral waters, but was also the first American to conquer the elusive peak. Thereafter, explorers made it a point to investigate the now famous “boiling” springs, so named for the rumbling sound of escaping gas rather than their temperature. Daniel Boone’s grandson, Albert Gallatin Boone, brought his two sons here in 1833 to take the cure, to be followed by other illustrious trailblazers like John C. Fremont and Rufus Sage. Of special note was adventurer George Frederick Ruxton, an English military officer who wrote extensively about the benefits of the springs in his 1846 book, Life in the Far West, an international best seller.

Saratoga of the West Ruxton’s book would influence General William J. Palmer and Dr. William A. Bell to visit the area in 1868, while on a railroad survey for the Kansas Pacific. Palmer planned to build a railroad from Denver to Mexico and Bell, an English physician, saw the potential of the medicinal springs as the centerpiece for a European-style health resort that would draw passengers to this new venture. The future town of La Font was laid out in 1871, but investor William Blackmore suggested the alternative name of Manitou mentioned in the “Song of Hiawatha” by Longfellow. The springs of Manitou did attract large numbers of tubercular sufferers in the early years, but the Panic of 1873 limited the success of the venture for most of the decade. Not until a railroad spur was built from Colorado Springs in 1881 did Manitou really thrive. By the 1890’s, the resort boasted of seven grand hotels, including the Cliff House, Barker House, and the Grandview, which still stand today. Smaller hotels, boarding houses and summer rental cottages were also available for the thousands of visitors who came 8

each season. Guests arrived on the Denver and Rio Grande or the Midland Railroad and could drink the waters at the many springs or enjoy the many attractions like the Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway, Rainbow Falls, or Cave of the Winds. A plunge at the Manitou Bath House was especially popular, considering there were only a few bathrooms in each hotel. Visitors to the “Saratoga of the West” included several Presidents and celebrities like P. T. Barnum, Thomas Edison, and Lillie Langtry. Jerome Wheeler, a former president of Macy’s Department Store and Aspen mining magnate, built an estate in Manitou as well as a threestory bottling plant, so the mineral water could be shipped throughout the country. To celebrate the opening of the plant, Wheeler donated the Town Clock, which stills stands in the center of town. The goddess Hebe, cupbearer to the gods of Mt. Olympus and keeper of the elixir of eternal youth, adorns the top of this generous gift.

Manitou History

Era of Auto Tourism

Manitou Renaissance

The advent of the automobile changed the type of visitor who came to Manitou Springs. Guests wanted to park their cars as close to their rooms as possible and moved on after only a few days. Thus was born the autocourt motel, of which Manitou has several fine examples. The latest attractions, including the Mt. Manitou Incline, the Crystal Park Auto Tour, and the Cliff Dwellings, catered to this increasingly transient traveler. Dance pavilions, like Hiawatha Gardens, featured some of the most popular bands of the era and nationally recognized restaurants, like the Craftwood Inn, could still attract the celebrities of the day.

After decades of stagnation, in the 1970’s, Manitou began to reinvent itself based on its original strengths. The formation of a National Historic District encouraged the restoration of neglected structures and an art colony began to grow in the idyllic setting. The mineral springs, which had been ignored for many years, were renewed by the creation of the Mineral Springs Foundation in 1987. The charming Manitou Springs of the present owes a great deal to its illustrious past. So, please sample the famous waters, soak in some sunshine, and enjoy Manitou Springs’ historic hospitality.

Parks & Playgrounds

Manitou Springs is fortunate to have major city parks for residents and visitors to enjoy. Soda Springs Park features a playground, picnic area, and large pavilion which hosts concerts throughout the summer season. Mansions Park is directly behind City Hall and also has a large pavilion. It is a beautifully landscaped park with flower gardens, walkways, and benches surrounding a three-tiered fountain. The “Fountain of Youth is a tribute to the children of Colorado who have died unnecessarily. Seven Minute Gazebo, located near Memorial Park, is a beautiful structure surrounded by colorful gardens. Outside of the Gazebo is Seven Minute Spring, whose water is used by many of the locals to make sparkling lemonade. The pavilions and gazebo can be rented through City Hall for reunions, weddings, and other events or celebrations by calling (719) 685-2565. The Fields Community Park has tennis courts and a skateboard park. It is located across the street from the School District baseball field. Schryver Park is a shady oasis with an indoor swimming pool, a small pond that children can fish in, and a picnic area. Memorial Park is home to several community art projects. Sculptures dot the park along with plenty of shady trees, benches and picnic tables. The Manizoo Sandbox, a community art project by children’s book illustrator Jillian Lund, is located here. The sandbox is tiled with hundreds of handmade ceramic tiles and contains a poem that challenges children to find 81 fish, 50 butterflies, 39 turtles, 26 ladybugs, 12 frogs, 8 honeybees, 4 dragonflies, and 1 snail named Slimy Sue.

Osburn’s Gift Shop Family Owned For Over 60 Years 951 Manitou Avenue Manitou Springs, CO 80829 (719) 685-9614

Centuries ago, the great tribes of the plains and mountain Indians paid homage to the healing and spiritual powers of the mineral springs. They believed the medicinal waters were a gift from the Great Spirit Manitou. Long valued by health seekers, Manitou Springs’ natural spring waters contain a variety of minerals including the carbonic acid which created the first carbonated drink.

Manitou Springs has 10 naturally carbonated mineral drinking fountains throughout the Historic District. Unlike most other mineralized springs, these waters are cool and pleasant to drink. Each of these artistic fountains has a slightly different taste, depending on their mineral content. Maps to each fountain, mineral content charts and complementary tasting cups are available at the Manitou Springs Visitors Center, located at 354 Manitou Avenue.

Iron Spring Geyser is a drilled spring prescribed by early physicians for iron deficiencies. It was on the daily walk for 1800’s health seekers. Twin Spring, orginially two drilled springs now merged into one flow, is sought for its sweet taste, calcium and potassium content.

Stratton Spring was drilled by the Stratton Foundation as a service to the town, where the popular pedestrian and traffic routes follow earlier Native American trails.

C

B

Mineral Springs Shoshone Spring, a natural spring with some sulphur, was highly recommended by physicians for its curative uses before modern medicines were developed.

E

D

Wheeler Spring, a drilled soda spring, was donated to the city by the family of Jerome Wheeler, of the New York Macy’s, residing in Manitou Springs and involved in banking, mining and railroads locally and in Aspen. His home, Windemere, was located at the site of the present day post office.

Navajo Spring is located beneath the present popcorn and candy store, with its spigot on the back wall of the building. A natural soda spring, it attracted the Indians and settlers, which led to the establishment of Manitou Springs. This Manitou water was famous across the nation.

F

Soda Spring, located inside the Spa Building, was the social spot of early years and one of the natural springs. For decades there was a large open pavilion with room for the many residents and travelers who came for the water to enjoy society in the fresh air. The water is not publically accessible.

F

G

F

Cheyenne Spring is a natural, sweet soda spring, from limestone aquifers a mile deep and believed to be over 20,000 years old.

Seven Minute Spring was drilled to enhance the park of a large hotel at the site in 1909. Carbonation caused it to erupt at 7 minute intervals. It was redrilled in the 1990’s and the surrounding park was developed.

H

Ute Chief Spring, under private ownership, is widely known and favored for lemonade, flowing from a much-photographed statue.

Colorado cuisine is popular with locals and visitors alike. Some prefer an elegant evening indoors enjoying wine and fondue, while others may prefer to sit outside and enjoy the great Colorado weather.
