The Bakeneko Prostitutes of Edo. During the time of the Edo Period of Japan, an urban legend of Bakenekos disguised as prostitutes and courtesans had spread throughout the Yoshiwara pleasure district in Edo. Locals, travelers and samurai would go out in search of any women rumored to be this mysterious being in disguise. A famous woodblock print depicts one account of a samurai’s encounter with this spirit in the Yoshiwara district. He awakes in the middle of the night to a dim-lantern light casting an inhuman shadow on the wall, presumed to be his lover, stripping away the flesh of fish with her teeth.
