Dear friends -
Thank you for joining us in this awe-inspiring setting, surrounded by this supportive and vibrant community, as we immerse ourselves in dance at this year’s Fire Island Dance Festival.
The magic of Fire Island Pines extends beyond its incomparable natural beauty. What makes the blues of the bay seem bluer and joy emanate from every step on the boardwalk are the people.
The Pines community is one of love, acceptance and celebration. We’re grateful to have been welcomed with open arms when we first began this festival in 1995, and for all the friends and chosen family we’ve made along the way. When the world outside these one-and-a-half miles feels unsafe or volatile, you are our home and guiding light.
And that light radiates beyond the Pines and across the country through your support of Dancers Responding to AIDS and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Your ongoing dedication ensures people in need in the dance and theater communities, and across all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., receive lifesaving meals and medication, health care and hope.
To the world-class dancers, choreographers and dance companies who make this festival possible, as well as the theatrical professionals and volunteers who transform this corner of the bay into a breathtaking waterfront stage: thank you. Our gratitude for your art and talents is unending.
Thank you to our sponsors, Leadership Supporters, ticket buyers and generous providers of services and housing who are joining us for another year. Your commitment is invaluable and essential.
And to the members of the Fire Island Dance Festival Committee and this year’s Benefit Committee, your persistence and dedication is the beating heart of this festival. We extend sincere thanks.
By being here, in this space, with these people, you’ve made a difference. Enjoy the singular magic of the festival!

DANCERS RESPONDING TO AIDS
In a New York City apartment 33 years ago, two dozen dancers brainstormed what they could do to help so many of their colleagues who were battling AIDS. Denise Roberts Hurlin and Hernando Cortez, dancers with Paul Taylor Dance Company at the time, mobilized the group and ultimately created Dancers Responding to AIDS in 1991. It was the dance community’s first ongoing effort to raise awareness and money to directly help those living with AIDS.
The vitality of DRA comes from the extraordinary compassion and efforts of the performing arts community to fund a safety net of social services for those in need.
As a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Dancers Responding to AIDS helps support the essential programs of the Entertainment Community Fund (formerly The Actors Fund), including The Friedman Health Center for the Performing Arts, the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and The Dancers’ Resource. Broadway Cares also provides grants to more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. At times of crisis, Broadway Cares also awards one-time humanitarian grants to provide emergency aid across the US and around the world.
Funds raised by DRA and Broadway Cares help ensure that those most in need have access to lifesaving medications, counseling, healthy meals, emergency financial assistance and more.
Dancers Responding to AIDS has proven since 1991 that what we do together makes a difference.
