A History of Giving
For more than 36 years, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS has been the philanthropic heart of Broadway, helping provide meals and medication, health care and hope to those facing hardship and personal crises.
Equity Fights AIDS was founded in October 1987 by the Council of Actors’ Equity Association. Broadway Cares was founded in February 1988 by members of The Producers’ Group. In May 1992, the two merged to become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
Today, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is the major supporter of the social service programs at the Entertainment Community Fund (formerly The Actors Fund) and also awards annual grants to more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.
As we gather at the stunning New Amsterdam Theatre for another edition of Red Bucket Follies, I find myself reflecting on this moment with a mixture of joy and bittersweet emotions. This celebration of compassion, creativity and community has always been one of my favorite times of the year. But today is especially poignant for me, as this will be my final note in a Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS event program.
After 36 extraordinary years of soul-stirring work, I will retire as executive director on December 31.
Amid so much pain and divisiveness in the world, I look to the future with hope because of you. Your generosity of spirit has been the lifeboat that carries Broadway Cares forward, empowering the delivery of warm meals, lifesaving medication and essential services to those who need them most.
Your generosity this year has allowed so much good work to happen. This year, we awarded $6.5 million to the Entertainment Community Fund (formerly The Actors Fund) to sustain, ensure and enhance services for all in the entertainment industry and performing arts. That includes $2 million for The Friedman Health Center, $1 million for the HIV/AIDS Initiative, $800,000 for the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and much more.
Additionally, our National Grants Program provided $8.8 million to more than 450 AIDS and social service organizations across the country. You’ve provided much-needed assistance for tens of thousands in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., who might otherwise have been left to face serious health and personal challenges on their own.
These accomplishments are a testament to you — the extraordinary individuals who unite in our shared mission of making a difference. From the 31 Broadway, six Off-Broadway, and 14 national touring productions that came together to make appeals this fall, to every person who contributed their time, dollars, energy and passion — you are the heart, soul and muscle of this work.
I am confident that this safety net of care will endure and grow under the leadership of Danny Whitman, whose 15 years as our director of development have prepared him to take the helm with vision, dedication and kindness.
As Alicia Keys so beautifully writes in her new musical Hell’s Kitchen, “We’re here to make meaning for as long as we’re breathing.” Your compassion and hope have imbued my life with profound meaning, and for that, I will always be grateful.
Thank you for sharing in these 36 incredible years.
With appreciation and affection,
Tom Viola Executive Director
A Bit of Red Bucket Follies History
Each fall, our community comes together to celebrate a collective, steadfast commitment to helping those facing the challenges of HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses.
It all started at the St. James Theatre on November 28, 1989, with the first Gypsy of the Year competition. Hosted by Jonathan Hadary, Tyne Daly and the company of Gypsy, this fledgling event - produced by Maria Di Dia and Tom Viola and directed by Michael Lichtefeld - raised more than $64,000 and featured the companies of A Chorus Line, Black & Blue, Cats, Grand Hotel, Gypsy, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Sweeney Todd, The Heidi Chronicles, The Threepenny Opera and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom/The Lady in Question.
Today, we stage the 33rd edition of this beloved classic, honoring the legacy of Gypsy of the Year and celebrating the third year of its new name and renewed spirit, Red Bucket Follies.
We are deeply grateful to all who have made this event so wildly successful.
You are the heart, soul and muscle of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
Your efforts enable Broadway Cares to continue to offer essential assistance to those in the entertainment industry and to more than 450 social service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.
*In-theater fundraising only, no Red Bucket Follies performance
That legacy will continue thanks to your generosity, spirit and heart. Thank you, and here’s to another 33 years of helping those in need.

ENTERTAINMENT COMMUNITY FUND
Connecting Seniors to Community Through Life-Affirming Programs
For more than a decade, Traci DiGesu has been compassionately supporting seniors as they navigate the later stages of life. But it was her two decades as a costume designer that drew her attention to the unique challenges older populations face in the entertainment industry, and inspired her to become a licensed social worker.
Now, DiGesu leads the senior services program at the Entertainment Community Fund, part of the safety net of services helping those in entertainment and the performing arts. Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is the largest single financial supporter of the Fund, awarding its programs $6.5 million this year.
“One of the biggest issues everybody faces as they age is role loss,” DiGesu said. “We retire, whether we want to retire or not. It’s particularly dangerous and difficult for entertainment professionals, because when they lose touch with their work life, they lose touch with their community.”
Rebuilding that sense of belonging is at the heart of DiGesu’s work in the Entertainment Community Fund’s Senior Services program. Supported by a dedicated team of social workers and sustained through continued support from Broadway Cares’ donors, the program offers a broad range of life-affirming services for seniors.
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS long-standing connection with the Entertainment Community Fund goes back to its funding of the creation of the HIV/AIDS Initiative in 1988.
In 1996, Broadway Cares expanded its contributions to help launch the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative. Since then, it has championed a full range of social services, including Artists Health Insurance Resource Center (AHIRC), Addiction and Recovery Services, The Dancers’ Resource and the Broadway Flu Shot Initiative. In 2017, Broadway Cares’ support helped create The Friedman Health Center for the Performing Arts, which provides specialized care for Broadway and performing arts professionals.
“The most rewarding part of my job is seeing how people connect to services and get the help they need,” DiGesu said.

would like to thank the members of the following unions for their continued participation and support of the audience appeals made once again in Broadway theaters.
With the added support of our friends Off-Broadway and in national touring shows across the country, these appeals are the backbone and muscle of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ annual fundraising efforts.
These appeals could not be done without the generous collective efforts of:
Actors' Equity Association - actors and stage managers
American Federation of Musicians Local 802
ATPAM - company managers, house managers and press agents
The Dramatists Guild of America
IATSE Local One - stagehands, carpenters, electricians and props
IATSE Local 306 - ushers, ticket takers and doormen
IATSE Local 751 - treasurers and ticket sellers
Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Local 798
Stage Directors and Choreographers Society
Theatrical Wardrobe Union Local 764
and, of course, all of our friends at The Broadway League for making these efforts welcome in their theaters as a part of their productions.
For more than 36 years we have said, “What we do together makes a difference.”
This proves it. Our sincere thanks to all.

NATIONAL GRANTS
A Lifeline of Support for Linda and Countless Others Living with HIV
At 58, Linda’s life took a surprising turn when a mysterious illness led to an unexpected diagnosis: she was HIV positive.
Living quietly as an empty nester in Nashville, those were words she never imagined hearing, let alone at this stage in her life. Unsure of where to turn, she was introduced to Nashville CARES, a grantee of Broadway Cares since 1988.
“I know now that I have the virus, but I don’t have to think about dying every day, like I used to,” Linda said. “I’ll die one day, but not from this. I know now that I can live a healthy, normal life because of the services provided by Nashville CARES.”
Nashville CARES received a $10,000 grant this year from Broadway Cares’ National Grants Program, one of the 466 social service organizations in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico to be awarded $8.8 million dollars in grants in 2024.
These grants help people like Linda get access to the depth of services they need to manage their diagnosis. The first hurdle for Linda was affording the prohibitively expensive medication that she needed to get and stay healthy.
“I’m working a full-time job I’ve had for 10 years, but insurance doesn’t cover a lot of the medications for HIV/AIDS,” Linda said. “Every day, just to live, people are put in the position of, ‘Do I buy food or do I buy medicine?’”
These tough financial choices mirror concerns being shared by clients at Broadway Cares grantees across the country. In Linda’s case, Nashville CARES was able to step in with compassionate case management and connect her to the lifesaving medication she needs. Equipped with their full suite of life-affirming care - beyond just the medication that drove her to seek out the organization - Linda has the tools to not just survive, but thrive.
Once Linda utilized this full range of services to gain control of her own diagnosis, she felt empowered to give back to others living with HIV. Just a year-and-a-half later, she serves on Tennessee’s Ryan White Planning Council, which ensures people living with HIV/AIDS across the state have access to quality care.
Those services, powered by the generosity of Broadway Cares supporters, assure that Linda, and people like her across the country, will continue to stay healthy, today and well into the future.
“You are saving lives every day,” Linda said. “Thank you so much for saving mine.”

BUCKET BRIGADE VOLUNTEERS
An army of 250 tireless volunteers and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS staffers enhanced the Red Bucket Follies fundraising efforts this season. They held buckets and sold autographed memorabilia in the lobbies of Broadway and Off-Broadway theaters alongside company members of participating shows. Over the course of six weeks of audience appeals, volunteers filled 4,968 shifts at 1,483 appeals. Our sincere thanks to these unsung heroes: Broadway Cares’ famous bucket brigade.
