JAKE SHIMABUKURO The virtuoso and iconic ukulele rock star returns to Tacoma! Jake Shimabukuro has singularly altered expectations for his instrument. From his early days in Hawaii to a viral sensation playing George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” on YouTube, his album has reached #1 in Billboard’s Top World Music Albums. From collaborations with Alan Parsons to Jimmy Kimmel Live! and a PBS documentary about his life, Shimabukuro’s career makes a significant statement: the ukulele, with its humble four strings and modest two-octave range, is limited only by the imagination and creativity of the person playing it. In Shimabukuro’s hands, it is easy to believe the ukulele is capable of anything.

TACOMA ARTS LIVE PRESENTS

ANOUSHKA SHANKAR Sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar is a singular figure in the Indian classical and progressive world music scenes. Her spiritual musicality has garnered numerous accolades, including six Grammy Award nominations, recognition as the youngest – and first female – recipient of a British House of Commons Shield, credit as an Asian Hero by TIME Magazine, and a Songlines Best Artist Award. Deeply rooted in the Indian Classical music tradition, she studied exclusively from the age of nine under her father and guru, the late Ravi Shankar. Shankar’s artistic output increasingly seeks to reflect her impassioned support of women’s rights and social justice. She threw her passion behind the One Billion Rising campaign on Change.org to end worldwide violence against women. She took part in a special panel on violence against women at the annual Hindustan Times Leadership Summit in New Delhi.

ERIC CLAUSELL

ART Three best friends. One painting. Imagine making a purchase that brings 20 years of friendship to a comical boiling point and fist fight. Art, by Yasmina Reza, was a sensational hit in London and New York when it premiered, running more than 600 performances on Broadway and winning the Tony for Best Play. A breathtakingly funny, brilliantly satiric look at status, power, and the dynamics of friendship, including the difficulty of being truly honest, even between people who love each other. All is well in the lifelong friendship until one of the trio buys an expensive painting setting everything out of balance! This is the second production from Tacoma Arts Live’s new regional theater program. Thank you to our Theater Angels for making this play possible!

“The verbal dexterity – is evident. As is the theatrical aplomb.” – The Guardian

THE KINSEY SICKS

THINGS YOU SHOULDN’T SAY If you love Donald Trump, you’ll hate this show! This is the remarkable true story of four friends from San Francisco who had a life-changing epiphany at a Bette Midler concert that led to them to form The Kinsey Sicks in an effort to find joy during the darkest days of the AIDS crisis. Now that the era of Trumpism is upon us, they’re sharing their hilarious, inspiring and at times heartbreaking tale, and showing that hatred and deceit can be fought with humor and heart. This show was a smash hit Off-Broadway at New York’s fabled SoHo Playhouse. Critics have described the show as “powerful,” “delicious,” “exquisite,” “electric,” “outrageous,” “brave,” “mesmerizing,” “flawless,” “riotously funny,” “an absolute must watch,” and “theater at its BEST!"
