美國電影的先鋒人物，風格詭異多變，手法瘋狂奇幻。1977年完成他自學生時代開始籌備的首部
長片《擦紙膠頭》 ，將超現實主義用黑白影像純熟展現，性暗喻和肉體恐怖將驚悚達到異樣極致，成就 cult片經典。
之後拍攝改編自真人真事的《象人》 ，驚悚之餘展現人文關懷，1986年拍攝《藍色夜合花》 ，可謂導 演風格的承前啟後之作，既繼承早前黑色壓抑的風格，又開創他對美國社會文化及人性兩極等題 材的探討。
大衛連治此後的幾部電影，風格迥異，公路片、懸疑偵探片、黑幫片、人物傳記、肥皂劇、奇幻片等類 型 風 格 被 他 以 折 衷 手 法 玩 到 出 神 入 化，在 主 流 電 影 和 實 驗 電 影 的 層 面 上，都 獲 得 廣 泛 的 讚 譽 :
1992年憑公路電影《野性的心》勇奪康城金棕櫚大獎;扣人心弦的《路直路彎》則突破固有形象，成
為連治唯一的迪士尼電影;而意亂情迷的《失憶大道》使連治再次獲得奧斯卡金像獎提名，到了今天 仍被喻為21世紀最佳電影之一;但這名電影界的鬼才最廣為人知的作品，卻是在1990年瘋魔全球 的美國電視劇《迷離劫》 。
雖然他大部份的作品都被譽為超現實主義的怪雞電影，但對現實的暗諷卻入木三分，表面著重幻
覺和夢魘，卻寫盡人性醜惡和慾念，直指人心。一切都在夢魘和慾望中掙扎不休，用黑暗的噩夢反 襯黑暗的社會，用破碎的故事隱喻破碎的人心，一展現代人內心世界的狂魔。電影涉及美國社會各 面，探討後資本主義時代社會上廣泛的壓抑情緒和暴力取向，透視現代人的個體孤獨和存在危機。
連治作為一位極具個人風格的導演，多數電影都由其親自編劇，時間線或會交錯重疊，情節恍似相
互矛盾。他在拍攝手法上亦不斷求變，拍《內陸帝國》時放棄菲林拍攝，改為使用早期數碼攝錄機， 是看中其鏡頭對光線的特殊感應和粗獷的畫面質感可打造更為暈眩奇幻的視覺效果。
除了在2017年延續《迷離劫》的電視神話，連治已經有超過十年沒有拍攝電影，但他的作品對於現 今電影甚至流行文化仍具有深遠的影響。今天回顧這些當年衝擊影壇的傑作，依然令人為其破格 的創造力嘆為觀止。

series, the 40th anniversary of Lynch’s debut film Eraserhead is just around the corner, as is the 30th anniversary of Blue Velvet, the 20th anniversary of Lost Highway, the 15th anniversary of Mulholland Drive, and the 10th anniversary of Inland Empire. As many of Lynch’s classics have been digitally remastered over the years, it’s about time for a David Lynch Retrospective. Lynch is much more than just a director. He is also a painter, artist, musician, meditator and coffee expert. Rarely will you find a creator with so many talents. Ten years have passed since Inland Empire, the last film he directed. Now back in the Director’s Chair, Lynch is ready to change the landscape of TV again with a new series of Twin Peaks, which has become the first TV drama ever to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Subconsciousness, nightmare, anxiety, memory, surrealism, darkness, absurdity, the gaze… are all keywords for Lynch’s cinema. As strange as the weirdest of your dreams, his cinematic world blurs the line between reality and fantasy. His manipulation of the uncanny and unconventional narrative structures create the most unsettling viewing experiences. His interpretation of us is almost otherworldly. As a result, almost all first-time viewers find his films too difficult to grasp, but most of them will also be amazed by the unique worlds he creates. Eventually they find themselves unable to forget Lynch’s cinematic worlds and become possessed by their magic, the lynchian magic. This summer, a series of David Lynch’s works will be shown at Broadway Cinematheque, including his early shorts and documentaries. Celebrity Lynch fans from different industries in Hong Kong will come together to create a book on the magic of David Lynch, and hopefully provide readers with a more comprehensive portrait of this weird and uniquely American director.

When his girlfriend abandons their deformed child, Henry is forced to care for the child by himself. Henry spirals into madness as he is overwhelmed by dreams of a singing lady in the radiator, his obsession over a beautiful neighbor and the cries of his grotesquely deformed son. Mostly a prequel to the series, Fire Walk With Me covers the investigation into the murder of Teresa Banks and events that unfolded over seven days before the murder of Laura Palmer, the series’ core mystery. Going beyond the boundaries of network television, Fire Walk With Me takes the Twin Peaks story deep into horror territory, exposing the physical and psychological torment Laura went through before her tragic death. In late 19th century London, surgeon Frederick Treves discovers John Merrick, a deformed man suffering from abuse as an attraction at a local freak show. Impressed by John’s intelligence and kindness, Frederick brings John into his hospital and develops a bond with him. John eventually becomes a celebrity among members of high society, but there are also others who fear him and see him as a freak. After Eraserhead used human deformity as an object of horror, Lynch makes a surprising shift to the other end of the spectrum, capturing Merrick and Treve’s extraordinary story with compassion and relative restraint. The black-and-white drama – nominated for eight Academy Awards – is buoyed by amazing performances by Anthony Hopkins and especially John Hurt, who endured eight hours of makeup every day during production to become John Merrick.

After learning of his brother’s stroke, 73-year-old Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth, in his final performance) wishes to visit him in hopes of repairing their fractured relationship before they die. Barely able to walk and nearly blind, Alvin decides to make the 240-mile trip on his lawnmower, assisted by the kindness of strangers along the way. Based on an incredible true story, David Lynch’s first (and likely sole) family-friendly film is also his most heartwarming and commercial-friendly work (even though Lynch calls it his “most experimental film”). Straight’s journey doesn’t have any Wild At Heart-esque hijinks, but it does make for a touching road movie that also happens to be a sobering drama about a man reflecting on mortality, guilt and regret.

After working on several digital series for the Internet, David Lynch returned to filmmaking in 2006 with one of his most challenging projects. Lynch muse Laura Dern stars as Nikki, an actress who hopes to make a comeback with her latest film, the remake of a German film that may have been cursed. The weirdness escalates quickly when Nikki starts having trouble distinguishing her real self and the character she plays in the film. Shooting entirely on digital video for the first time, Lynch began production without a complete script, writing new scenes during the shoot without a road map for his non-linear, intertwining narratives until he reached the editing room. A collection of visionary director David Lynch's short films from the first 29 years of his career. Six Men Getting Sick is Fifty-seven seconds of growth and fire, and three seconds of vomit. The Alphabet, is a little nightmare about the fear connected with learning. Very abstract, a pretty dense little film. Industrial Soundscape is a short animated film based on a photograph of the tanks in Los Angeles where Lynch had shot a scene for Eraserhead. The Grandmother captures a lonely boy whose parents are too busy with their apathy and anger, decide to secretly grow a grandmother for himself. In The Amputee a double leg amputated woman sits and writes a long meandering letter while her ineffective nurse attempts to attend to her stumps. Lynch is the master of the tension between figuration and abstraction, between telling a story and creating an atmosphere. But where Bacon would destroy a painting when it moved too far into the abstract, Lynch here offers up the vignette that is probably best seen as more like an artist’s notebook than a self-supporting series of works. Lynch gives us six short films including The Darkened Room and the amusing Out Yonder Neighbor Boy, as well as three time-lapse experiments, but this feels like a useful peek into the mind of a working artist, but not quite the art itself. To shape Fire Walk With Me into a feature-length film, David Lynch had to cut roughly an hour and a half of footage featuring plot strands involving other Twin Peaks characters. In 2014, Lynch returned to those deleted footage and edited them into The Missing Pieces. In addition to additional scenes of Agent Desmond’s investigation into the Teresa Banks murder, The Missing Pieces also features scenes of absurd Lynchian humor that were missing from Fire Walk With Me, as well as more of David Bowie’s brief appearance as a long lost FBI agent, the Black Lodge spirits, Doc Hayward, the Packard Saw Mill and of course, FBI agent Dale Cooper. In 1985, David Lynch invited a young German filmmaker named Peter Braatz onto the set of his latest production, Blue Velvet. Over the next couple of months, Braatz recorded hours of footage, shot thousands of photographs and conducted numerous interviews with the cast and crew. For over 30 years, the majority of this material has gone unseen. But now, Braatz has pieced together his archival treasure trove to create a hypnotic meditation on one of cinema’s most enigmatic masterpieces. Presented without narration and no discernible narrative arc, this intuitive documentary does not seek to tell the story of how Blue Velvet came together, nor does it provide answers to the countless mysteries of the film’s labyrinthine plot. Instead, like a long-forgotten dream, Blue Velvet Revisited takes the viewer on a mysterious journey from which one emerges with more questions than answers. And what could be more Lynchian than that?

All done in Flash, all done by Lynch, Dumbland is a series of 5-minute line animations (drawn in the rough style and with the minimalist plots of David Lynch's The Angriest Dog in the World comic strip) featuring an angry and violent Neanderthal, and his family and neighbors. As described by Lynch, Dumbland is a weekly offering of "stupid, coarse humor," Lynch sits at his Apple iMac, drawing images with his mouse, animating them, providing the voices, composing and performing the background music.
