二戰時期，劍橋天才數學家艾倫圖靈 (Alan Turing) 研發了自動解 碼儀器，成功破解納粹德軍獨創、號稱世上最精密的「Enigma」( 謎 碼 ) 密碼機。他的發明不但拯救 1400 萬人避過戰火，還成為世上 首台電腦，他亦因而獲稱為「電腦之父」。然而圖靈這個任務其實 是由英軍秘密命令，戰後他沒被嘉許，反而因為同性戀身份，遭當 時政府入罪，於 1954 年神祕身亡，終年 41 歲。直至 2013 年 12 月 24 日英女王回應民眾請願，追授死後赦免狀，因同性戀行為被定罪的艾 倫圖靈才終於獲得平反。現任首相卡梅倫 (David Cameron) 讚揚 圖靈是「無與倫比的偉人，拯救無數人命」。 page

The interview does not go well. Denniston finds the Cambridge mathematics graduate arrogant and obtuse and is about to show him the door when Alan mentions Enigma, t h e G e r m a n m i l i t a r y c o d e m a c h i n e. Denniston points out t hat Enig ma is unbreakable, but Turing gleefully responds that he should be allowed to try.

Enigma 的起源 早於二戰發生之前，Enigma 已 在 1920 年代用作商業用途，加 密公司內部機密文件。Enigma 的 最大特色是不同於傳統的密碼，它 可以把源訊息中同一個字母轉換成不 同的字母，同時亦可以把不同的字母轉換成同一字母。換言之， Enigma 並非如傳統密碼中基於密碼表簡單地把訊息加密。商 用的 Enigma 可以編製 26 × 25 × 26 = 16,900 個加密組合， 但是納粹德軍 ( 海軍 ) 所使用的 Enigma 並非如此簡單。
158,962,555,217,826,360,000 的組合方式 德軍所使用的 Enigma 密碼機還設有 Plugboard 裝置，可以把 字母再轉換，例如 Q 會轉換為 E ，令加密組合數量大幅增加， 總共為 158,962,555,217,826,360,000 個組合，再加上利用密碼 表每天改變組合，令德軍認為他們的密碼系統是「不可破解」。
「不可破解」的漏洞 Enigma 密碼系統並非完美，因為它存在一個漏洞，就是任何 字母經過 Enigma 密碼機轉換後，永遠無可能是本來的字母， 這卻成了破解的關鍵。盟軍解密團隊和圖靈就利用這個漏洞， 先估計德軍所發出的訊息的可能詞彙。德軍習慣每天發出「天 氣報告」，德文為「wetterbericht」，再對應接收到的訊息，以 上述漏洞估計訊息中那一段為「wetterbericht」，從而猜測德 軍 Plugboard 的組合。圖靈以這樣的原理，再設定「一次破譯 測試錯誤的話，曾經估計的組合都是錯誤」的原則，製造出專 門破解德軍 Enigma 的自動解碼儀器 The Bombe ( 炸彈 )。
電腦的前身: The Bombe The process of breaking Enigma was aided considerably by a complex electro-mechanical device, designed by Alan Turing and Gordon Welchman. The Bombe, as it was called, ran through all the possible Enigma wheel configurations in order to reduce the possible number of settings in use to a manageable number for further hand testing. The Bombe was operated by Wrens, many of whom lived in requisitioned country houses such as Woburn Abbey. The work they did in speeding up the codebreaking process was indispensable. In October 1941, after receiving a letter from some s enior code brea kers decr y ing t he la ck of resources, the late Prime Minister Winston Churchill directed: 'Make sure they have all they want on extreme priority and report to me that this has been done.'

解碼器的功架 現在布萊切利園內的圖靈解碼儀器仿製品，是由 60 名電子專家花 了 16 年時間，才能解構出來，可見當時解碼器的複雜性。
The Bombe 當年的效用可以用一條簡單的數學表現出來：之前提 到 Enigma 有多達 158,962,555,217,826,360,000 的組合，圖靈的解 碼器可在少於一天內減去 14 個單位，即超過萬億的可能組合。最 後圖靈更洞悉了 Enigma 的漏洞，使 The Bombe 可以在 20 分鐘 內破解出德軍每天的組合，從而得知德軍的加密訊息。

He has made highly significant contributions to the emerging fields of artificial intelligence and computing. After the war, he has worked for many institutions, including the University of Manchester, where the Manchester mark 1, one of the first recognisable modern computers, was developed.

Joan Clarke (1917 - 1996) 劍橋數學系一級 榮譽畢業，1940 年進入布萊切利園做文書 工作，因數學天份被發掘而成為艾倫圖靈 團隊中唯一女隊員，亦是史上少數著名女 解碼員。與圖靈友誼深厚，圖靈更故意編 排兩人同時當值。翌年她接受圖靈求婚， 後來圖靈卻向她剖白同性戀取向，訂婚一 年即取消。1947 年獲頒大英帝國勳章。戰 後加入政府通訊總部，1952 年嫁予退役 軍人並停工，62 年回歸至 77 年退休。
全名 Conel Hugh O'Donel Alexander (1909 - 1974)，文書上用簡寫「C.H.O'D.」，生 於愛爾蘭，劍橋大學國王學院數學系一級 榮譽畢業，後來卻以「兩屆英國象棋冠軍」 的身份，於 1940 年被招攬入布萊切利園， 負責破解德國陸軍及空軍的機密訊息。翌 年調往協助圖靈管理其團隊，主力處理破 解謎碼機 (Enigma Machine) 的日常工作。 他終生效力布萊切利園至 1971 年退休。

《解碼遊戲》由《新福爾摩斯》英國男神班尼狄甘巴貝治 (Benedict Cumberbatch) 演活「電腦之父」 艾倫圖靈的傳奇一生。二戰期間，劍橋天才數學家圖靈 ( 班尼狄甘巴貝治 飾 ) 獲英軍秘密任命，試圖 破解由納粹德國獨創，號稱世上最精密的情報系統─「Enigma」密碼機。性格孤僻的他終日埋首研究， 只望盡快發明自動解碼儀器，過程遭遇重重挫折，幸好在聰敏漂亮的新成員 ( 姬拉麗莉 飾 ) 的鼓勵下， 圖靈主動打破和同僚的隔閡，最終合力研發出破譯敵方機密的裝置，促成二次大戰結束，超過 1400 萬 人得以避開戰火，而世上首台電腦亦宣告在那刻誕生。然而這位解密專家，背後隱藏著不容於世的秘密， 戰後多年，他竟被揭發為同性戀者而遭英國政府入罪……

In 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of 'gross indecency', an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality – little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany's World War II Enigma machine. THE IMITATION GAME follows a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save thousands of lives.
