The John Whitaker Bit

1. The cheek pieces are attached to the v-point of the cartwheel. The reins are connected to the snaffle ring, useful for everyday riding. This position is suitable for horses that play with the bit therefore moving freely in the horse’s mouth. This allows the horse to salivate and soften at the rider’s hands.
2. The cheek pieces are attached to the narrow part of the cartwheel. The reins are looped through the the v-point of the bit and the snaffle ring. In this position it increases pressure on the side of the horse’s mouth and gives the rider a greater turning action and more control. Ideal for riders with stronger horses.
3. In this position the v-point of the cartwheel increases the pressure on the horse’s poll and on the side of the mouth to aid turning, this is ideal for horses that hollow through their back. The reins are attached though the inner ring of the cartwheel maintaining a good contact through the reins to the rider.
4. In this position the cheek pieces are attached to the inner metal loop of the cartwheel and the reins are attached the snaffle ring and the v-point. In this position it lifts the bit higher in the horse’s mouth. It is ideal for horses that place their tongue over the bit and cross their jaw.
5. The cheek pieces are attached at the widest part of the cartwheel and the reins are looped through the snaffle ring at the v-pont of the bit. This position gives additional movement to the horse’s bit whilst maintaining effective rider control. This is ideal for schooling with less pressure placed on the poll.
6. The cheek pieces are attached to the v-point on the cartwheel. The reins are attached to the snaffle ring and the other cartwheel v-point. This increases pressure on the horse‘s poll and moves the bit higher in the mouth. Ideal for horses that cross their jaw and hollow their back.
