Jealousy Filled with uncontrolled rage A pure distaste for my rival Why should they be more than me? I have worked for my life, My talents, My intelligence, My blood and sweat spills on the ground I walk upon. With no work, no effort, They are more than I can ever be. They possess captivating beauty, Quick wit, Yet they have no use for these gifts. My jealousy is what propels me through life. Without my rival I have no motivation. I strive to be better, Better than them. ~Anonymous

An Orchestra A solo violinist has no support. They have no one with them, No one to catch their fall when they miss the high B flat, Or when they miscout a rest. They are alone. They must sound beautiful all the time, They must sound perfect all the time. With no direct competition, Motivation wears thin. In the absence of accompaniment, There is room for creativity. No, I don’t agree with the tempo of Bruch’s Violin Concerto, either. They have the ability to alter the music they are playing. An orchestra is a group, Not just violins. All instruments combined to bring music to life. The fierce competition provides motivation, And the rest of the section provides support. An orchestra must be organized, With each musician looking the same. There is little room for individual creativity, They music has to fit the group, Not the musician. While a soloist is impressive, An orchestra is more so. 8
Everyone has to work together, Combining individual talent to create something amazing. The double bass and low brass play a repeating tune, setting the speed. Violas, cellos, and horns add pressure, gradually getting louder. First violins, flutes, and oboes slice through everyone else like a knife. The second violins and clarinets provide a counter melody, calling out against the strong theme. A timpani solo and a bass drum bang signify the end. Satisfaction blossoms as the exhausted musicians gaze out into the audience. ~Madeline Wyatt “The One Who Loves You Up to their loving mother a child will look Down at her dear, sweet baby a mother will peer The baby grows to a child, seeking every cranny and nook Only when they gaze upon their mother, do their hearts truly cheer The child grows to a man seeking love from someone else He yearns for a family and a wife His frail, old mother is left all by herself He wants to abandon his old, familiar life He seeks guidance, but from whom? Why, his dear, old mother of course If he doesn’t get to her soon, he be seeing her tomb As he approaches his mother, he is feeling remorse He realizes that the wisest of all Is the one who loves you even when you fall ~ Virginia Chimley 9

Love at First Sight He rides on his horse into town, a lowly man with the rare gift of kindness and beauty She sits on her balcony sighing as her father yells at her for not choosing a suitor They sigh unknowingly at the exact same time. He runs inside his small hut while his mother and her friends gossip about the royal family She walks back inside only to be caught by her father unwittingly They think about a better life, a carefree life without any responsibilities. He runs back outside, only to begin weeding silently in the garden while his sister weeds with him She walks into the sitting room and weeps while her cats slink into her lap, a small comfort They wonder if they can ever be happy. He moves to weed a spot closest to the castle, wondering what it’s like to live there She walks outside, absentmindedly yelling that she is going outside They think about life in each other’s world, her in his and his in her. He stands up to walk back in but something tells him to stay She impulsively walks towards his hut with no sense of direction, only feeling They look into the distance, trying to see what they feel is there. Their eyes meet. ~Claire Smiley 12

Equality 7-2521: An Essay on Ayn Rand’s Novel Anthem In Anthem, by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 discovers that individualism is the key to his happiness. Throughout the book, Equality 7-2521 uncovers an invention that will greatly benefit mankind, even though the outcome of his discovery is not his primary motivation for conducting his experiments. When he is chosen to the profession of a street sweeper, all of his hope for joy and knowledge are gone. As days pass, Equality 7-2521 finds an underground tunnel from the Unmentionable Times. Even though it is forbidden, he goes down into the tunnel and begins his experiments which lead to the discovery of electricity. Equality 7-2521’s primary motivation for performing his experiments is his desire to have knowledge and happiness. Equality 7-2521’s experiments brought meaning and happiness to his life. Without them, his life would have been dull and meaningless. Since scientific research was one of the most valuable things to him and his desire to be sent to the Home of the Scholars was out the picture, his experiments helped to fill that empty hole inside of him. The feeling of being incomplete helped motivate him to conduct the experiments. As stated by Ayn Rand, “For the first time do we care about our body. For this wire is a part of our body, as a vein torn from us, glowing with our blood. Are we proud of this thread of metal, or of our hands which made it, or is there a line to divide the two?” (Rand 41). Equality 7-2521 felt that his creation had become a part of him and wanted to feel proud of it. The box that he created added an extension that allowed him to feel whole. Furthermore, Equality 7-2521 performed his experiments for the sake of himself. Throughout his experiments and life in general, Equality learned that he was not like the others. For example, when he was in the Home of the Students, the learning was so easy that the Teachers despised him. Instead of keeping it down inside himself, he found a way to express his differences. According to Ayn Rand, “We wish nothing, save to be alone and to learn, and to feel as if each day or sight were growing sharper than the hawk’s and clearer than rock crystal” (Rand 36). Equality 7-2521 wanted to learn and be by himself when all others frowned upon it. By performing the experiments, he was able to find independence in a strict collectivist society. 16
Arguably, Equality 7-2521 was right to be motivated in this way. In a world that forbade self independence, he was able to be true to his own mind. He thought and acted the way he wanted to, unlike when International 4-8818 was too afraid to go down into the tunnel because of the Council’s rules. When Equality 7-2521 was denied his wish to become a Scholar, he did not give up. Instead, he happened upon the underground tunnel with the mysterious box. He did not care about the rules of the Council and followed his urge for adventure and science. Equality 7-2521 was able to make himself happy without anyone's help except for the box and the Golden One. As stated by Ayn Rand, “It is my mind which thinks, and the judgement of my mind is the only searchlight that can find the truth” (Rand 62). While the other people in the collectivist society were given very little knowledge, Equality 7-2521 used his mind. He realized that his mind was the only thing that would help him learn. When he was able to gain knowledge, it allowed him to feel pride and happiness. One should be allowed to feel joy and expand their knowledge. Without anything to look forward to, a person tends to give up on the meaning of life, but Equality 7-2521 overcame that obstacle. He not only found happiness, but he also found himself. According to Ayn Rand, “What is my joy if all hands, even the unclean, can reach into it”(Rand 63). Equality 7-2521 realized that he deserved joy and he did not want just anybody to be able to take it away from him. For instance, when the World Council of Scholars disregarded his discovery, Equality 7-2521 did not let them take his pride away. Instead, he ran away into the Uncharted Forest even though men must not think about it. He did not think twice about what the World Council of Scholars said because he knew that they were the fools for not listening to him. Equality 7-2521 went on to build his own life outside of the collectivist society and live in happiness. Equality 7-2521’s primary motivation in conducting his experiments was to seek happiness and knowledge. Equality 7-2521 was right to be motivated in this way because his love for learning enabled him to be happy. His passion allowed him to break through the barriers of the collectivist society and realize that individualism is required to live freely. In a world where everyone is motivated in the same way, people would be able to expand on what makes them happy. For instance, Equality 7-2521’s love for science and his need to know more and more lead to his happiness. In a world where everyone is motivated in the same way, people would get the choice of how they want to live without pressure from others. As stated 17
by Ayn Rand, “And we shall join our hands when we wish, or walk alone when we so desire” (Rand 63). If allowed, people would live by their own minds and function independently. No one would try to hinder another’s passion solely based on the way they function. ~Amelia Wills
Money A power that all men contain Yet it is many men’s bane It brings power to those who are wealthy But, if you are not careful it will make your soul unhealthy It may bring you happiness But, it can bring even more sappiness It's what you use to buy a gift for your wife Yet it may ruin the rest of your life Many people set out in search of money Even if it means stealing from a mummy This pursuit may bring you to riches But it can lead you to a downfall that will cover you in stitches We are now at the end of the poem where I must fare you ado But you do have my greatest gratitude ~Gavin Close

Downfall of Julius Caesar He held half of Europe in his hand But, he has hated throughout the land The power he held was absolute However, this did not change fate’s route Even though he ruled such a nation It did not stop its creation The creation of an attack that would take crown Maybe even knock him down In the Senate building guards he did lack That is where they would attack In that building he looked absolute But in the end he died asking E tu,Brute? ~Gavin Close “Motherhood” The child of a mother is what she holds most dear Simple smiles and little moments soon become her world It hurts her heart immensely when they feel fear She looks down and smiles when in her arms they’re curled When she first felt your heartbeat she was overjoyed On some days she feels like she’s failing If you ever left her she would feel destroyed But you looking at her makes it all clear sailing Three little words are simple to a child But what it means to her you don't have a clue These three little words make a mother's heart go wild All it takes is to say I Love You ~Madi Roddy 19

Peace Peace is hard to find in today’s world There is always new violence on the news Or another person lost to drugs Another drunk person who made the mistake to drive A new war in the world Another child lost Every time I see another headline about yet another bombing I wonder why we can’t just get along Another terrorist attack More lives wasted Another child orphaned And once again I wonder when it will ever end For one inspiring event There are millions of disheartening ones Whether it's an animal abuse case or a murder I again have to wonder why these people do it Why can’t we keep the peace? ~Grace Farrimond

Equality’s Motivation to Learn The book Anthem, by Ayn Rand, is about a small town that existed thousands of years from now. They have lost all knowledge of technology and all they have for light are candles. They are never allowed to be alone for it is against the law, nor are they allowed to be assigned a name that makes them different from everyone else. They have names like Equality 7-2521, or International 4-8818. Everyone is assigned a job once they reach fifteen years of age. In the book, Equality learns that there are other things in life than being assigned a job that he must stick to until he cannot work. He also learns that he does not want to always follow the rules. Equality wants to do whatever he wants. He is not scared of being caught or breaking the rules. He just does what pleases him. For instance, Equality wants to do whatever he wants because he says, “We wish nothing, save to be alone and to learn, and to feel as if with each day our sight were growing sharper than the hawk’s and clearer than rock crystal” (Rand 36). Being alone and learning without a teacher is against the law where he lives. Yet he also says, “But we feel no burden upon our spirit and no fear in our heart”(Rand 37). Equality has no shame and no regret. Another reason Equality wants to do whatever he wants is when he says, “And in our heart-strange are the ways of evil!-in our heart there is the first peace we have known in twenty years” (Rand 37). Equality says to himself that he is a “wretch” and “traitor” yet he feels no burden upon his “spirit” and no “fear” in his “heart”. Equality also says how his “spirit” is as “clear” as a “lake” troubled by no “eyes” except the” sun’s” (Rand 37). Do I think that Equality is right to be motivated to do whatever he wants? Yes I do. For example, someone like a youtuber decides to quit their job and start making youtube videos of building things (like benches and shelves) and they make enough money so they don't have to have a job (other than youtube). They are teaching other people, that want to learn, how to build and are making enough money to live off. Now that is doing whatever you want. So them doing what they want to do has a greater benefit than what other people want him/her to do. Not only are they benefiting himself/herself, but they are also benefiting other people who are watching the videos and learning. Another example that relates to being motivated to do whatever you want is if someone were to go to college to learn how to be a nurse so they can take care of people and treat patients the right way. They go to the college because they 22
want to. They take care of people because they want to. They are helping themselves because they are doing what they want to do, yet they are also helping others by taking care of them Above all, Equality wants to do whatever he wants and is motivated in that way. His motivation is what keeps him going and helps him finish what he started. I think the world would be a lot more innovative if everyone wanted to learn as much as Equality . There would also be a lot of smarter people in the world. For example, it is inspiring when there are people that are always seeking out knowledge and learning. So more people would be inspired to learn and seek knowledge. ~Luca Helle
Friendship It's a wonderful thing to have, and horrible to lose. You have people to talk to, people to tell your stories too. You also have people to listen to, to agree with. When you triumph, they triumph with you. When you're upset, they are too. And if they're not, maybe it's because you need to hear something from another perspective. You have people to laugh with, do crazy, silly things with. When you mess up, they'll forgive you, when you fight, you'll make up. Friends. They're there for you. ~Isabella Campos

Fall The leaves die out and they drift away. Leading my thoughts wildly astray. They're all different colors from tree to tree. And once Fall comes the leaves become free. The chilly air and the warm fur coats. Causing some kids to have sore throats. Watch out for the flu, it’s everywhere. If you get it then you’ll need lots of care. The warm drinks come out in every cafe. And all the kids scream and play. For the cold weather they need warm coats. Along with some little toy boats. On Halloween night the ghosts come and play. And all the kids get candy without having to pay. Thanksgiving comes next with lots of food. Putting everyone into a great mood. Then comes the end of Fall. And now the kids make a snowball. Winter begins and it gets way colder. I wish Fall would pass by slower. ~Cooper Mastin

Paperboys Sleep Extra! Extra! The young ones yell The do this in an attempt to sell A page full of dry ink They stand and shout through the town Another headline was just found The paperboy looks around Yet no one is to be found The papers lay down at his feet As he then begins to weep The paperboys time sealed with a seam As we all turn to look upon a screen ~Luke Anderson Balance- A Virtue in Motivation Ayn Rand’s novel, Anthem, describes an extreme, collectivist society while telling a dystopian story about the search for the lone word “I”. Rand seems to believe flourishing concepts such as technology advancement, personal expression, and celebration of individuals are wilting and becoming dead philosophies. So, her foreseen future is one as unhinged as her novel. The society is based around a future world where the “Unmentionable Times” consist of times such as present-day. Obviously, the collectivist nation of the book deems Equality’s sin of the invention of the “light box” so revolting that there is no punishment worthy enough. The invention of the “light box” would not be enough rebellion to drive Equality to the edge of social suicide, so he also finds himself in an indescribable encounter with love. The deemed “unpardonable sin” drives Equality to escape the wretched authority with his partner, the Golden One, and inhabit a new Earth where he plans to face the existing human race with freedom, life, rights, and honor. Despite the shallow understanding of Equality’s motivation being the known fact that his invention might change mankind for better, there is a deeper and more complex inspiration. Equality is driven by his hunger for being himself. He thirsts for a substantial “sin” that will satisfy the “curse” with which he was born.. Elaboration on the development of Equality’s true motivation is necessary to a well-rounded understanding of Anthem and its message. In order to persuade the reader of the importance individualism, Rand uses a simple fact of human biology; humans have a passion to be their own, and do things for themselves. This type of motivation is an example of physiological egoism, the belief that humans are always motivated by self-interest. Rand develops the factual motivation through the story, but 25
she presents it in the first chapter in saying: We were born with a curse. It has always driven us to thoughts which are forbidden. It has always given us wishes which men may not wish. We know that we are evil, but there is no will in us and no power to resist it. This is our wonder and or secret fear, that we know and do not resist. (Rand 18) Without, Equality’s weakness to this dominant human trait, there would be no novel, no point, and no message. Along with the truthful human genetics of psychological egoism come the developed fluff that can only be supported by the story. Equality advocates for his sole ambition to be himself through a thirst for a better life by rebellion of the state. For example, Equality explains his invention to the Council when he says, “Let us all work together, and harness this power, and make it ease the toil of men. Lets throw our candles and our torches. Let us flood our cities with light. Let us bring a new light to men” (Rand 71)! Plainly put, one of Equality’s qualities is his will for an easier and lighter burdened life. Being himself means living a life he desires, living a life he would consider to be enlightened, not in socially acceptable way, but in his own individual way. Once Equality harnessed the power of the sky to “ease the toil of men”, he was doing something only he desired. Equality, equipped with his psychological ego, shows his plain aspiration in his advocacy for a less-burdened life. Given the analysis for Equality’s primary motivation, assessment of the motivation is key to finding one’s point of view on human incentive. Equality is human, or at least is portrayed to be, so he has human characteristics, including the socially diagnosed all-about-me syndrome. The most intelligent and independent species are human. Having the capability to think for ourselves gives us the drive to do things for ourselves. It is inevitable; we cannot restrain from our hunger for difference and personal desires. An example of our difference in thought is our sense of likeness. For instance, Equality’s thoughts tell us, “But tonight, for a reason we cannot fathom, we wish it were possible to us to know the likeness of our own person” (Rand 62). This desire sets us apart, not many other species can recognize themselves, or let alone understand their potential for individualism. With all this elaboration, one point is made: individualism is inescapable. However, one would believe that another extreme would be dangerous also, so there should be a happy medium between the origins of self-motivation. Being a believer of the Christian faith, unavoidable self-motivation should be balanced with a desire to do things for others. Equality is somewhat helping others because his invention will greatly benefit mankind, if it was allowed to be used. However, he is not doing it for the benefit of others. This kind of incentive is not completely wrong, but it is not completely right. Rand sets the reader up so that almost everyone would say it was acceptable to be motivated by utter self-intentions because she made the situation so extreme. There is nothing wrong with the motivation Equality experiences due to his surrounding community. However, self-motivation in today’s society is taken much further, and can be acceptable to an extent. Christopher Lasch once said, “In an individualistic culture, the narcissist is God’s gift to the world. In a collectivist society, the narcissist is God’s gift to the collective.” This quote is entirely true, but all motivation should not come from one or the other. Balance is a virtue, and we should all be virtuous. ~Camilla Mincey

The conversations you have. The pictures you take. Will any of that last? Mankind truly is a killing machine. We are all killing machines We make inventions to improve our quality of life. We automate machines to make our lives easier. We cut down forests for lumber and farmland. We have wars to fight for land. We make deadly factories. I could go on until my throat dried up like a grape. Can we do anything? To be honest, the most powerful man in the world couldn’t do much. We’ve done something that we can’t reverse. You cannot deny what we have done. We can see it in our leaders. We can see it in the people. We can see it in our very, very sick world. All we can do now Is just sit and watch as our world is destroyed. All we can do is observe what we’ve done in horror We are all monsters. ~ Anonymus 34
A New Beginning She, Tired, helpless, Reaches out with rough hands, For there is nothing to grab. She, With a hoarse voice, Speaks, But nothing comes out. She, Blind without sight, Has a vision, That one day she will see beauty. She, Deaf, impaired, Listens to the silence, That awakens greatness. She, A dreamer at heart, Yearns for a new beginning, That will allow her to flourish with all her might. ~ Amelia Wills

The Feelings of War The battles of wars are hard-fought, With the fields covered in corpses. Many soldiers died on the fields, Fighting for one king’s greed. For whether it be for land or gold, No ruler can withstand the temptation.
The soldiers fight to protect their loved ones. They stop at nothing to win, Defending their homeland and what they love, Gives them determination to survive, Even when all hope may be lost. To protect their beliefs and belongings, They sacrifice all for others.
The countless deaths and prisoners taken, Separate these soldiers from their families, The hearts of the children and wives, Are torn apart by the war. With nations conquered, and leaders sacked, The lands and peasants may suffer, Or the tyranny of a conqueror was ended, 36
And the people may soon rise.
The treaties and meetings of rulers, Inspire followers for peace. The making of alliances and pacts to unite May cause trust to form between many, Or backstabbing to tear it apart.
Within conflicts many terrors occur, Death, Destruction, Betrayal, Greed, Yet many honors arise, Duty, Protection, Love, sacrifice, Trust, And within this balance, The art of war emerges. To fight for honor, or to save your loved ones. The ultimate sacrifice awaits. ~Rocco Ahching

Horse Killers Our friends are being murdered They are not human, they are horses Their meat being used for dog food and human food They go to a nightmare called ‘the slaughter house’ Some were friends, others were champions They all were kind and innocent like us Our friends are being murdered They had large hearts, some were very young Imagine you’re playing your favorite sport Then a car comes up and you are forced to get in You are taken away from your parents, friends, and everything thing you know You are now in a dark cramped stall with two strangers and no food or water You are killed in the next hour Our friends are being murdered Some could jump the skies, others could race the wind They all had hearts of gold Most would do what you asked All of these friends would try to do what you asked Their spirit’s were free The horses did everything right All of these creatures deserved second chances Our friends are being murdered ~Cambria Ginther

Sonnet for the Sun I yearn for summer to come back again, To bless me with a gentle, modest breeze And take me back to the place I had been, Where I can doze as long as I may please. Try not to dwell upon thoughts of the pastOf memories which faded back to dust, Even if back then I thought they would last, Autumn’s cold touch would still leave them to rust. A wistful glance across the winding street, Exploring wooded trails and little streams, Hoping, my love, we may once again meet, I’ll relieve good times if only in dreams. My joy will come when springtime’s sweet breath Will change: Until quiet, warm summer’s death. ~Grace Elliott Come Out No one notices you But you stand out. You feel unimportant When you really are not. Everyone thinks that you are the problem But you are the solution. What if that could change? Come out of the dark. Make sure everyone can see you. Think you are important. Show them that you are the real solution. ~Cailyn Challen

Fighting We use the best we can to harm others in fights, We don’t talk it out, Our society immediately goes to the death, We don’t care we think it’s fine to strip others of life, We don’t know how it feels, We don’t know how it feels to lose someone, Until we do, We become weak and vulnerable in the ultimate fight, Then we lose, This always goes on in life, We never realise it because we are all caught up in war, We just fight until we die, We can’t agree, We do bad things. But we never agree, We try to fight back but end up worse, In trouble, Alone, Vulnerable, We end up in the vicious cycle of losing all over again. ~ Julia dieter

Life Life is a puzzle Sometimes it is tough, Sometimes it is simple, Sometimes you find your way, Sometimes you simply lose your say, But, everything left per say, The puzzle has to be solved, Everyone has to play, Life is truly a puzzle per say. ~Owen
Our World of Color We live in a world full of color Filled with majestic natural beauties We preserve them with national parks But do we really preserve? We scratch our name on wonders. We knock over rocks to see them crumble. Like the feelings of their admirers; We start fires for our enjoyment and make “real” Smoky Mountains. We live in a world of color Filled with imaginative people We have Walt Disney and Dr. Suess We have Pablo Picasso and Leonardo Da Vinci We even have Hollywood So, how could this be bad? We pollute our surroundings We use drugs for “inspiration” We spray paint on walls We set fires for photos. We live in a world of wonders. Imagination and natural beauties, Yet , we still reject it- This I despise. Why are we not thankful? I know not why. ~Nicholas Barrett

Live Live each day We are all busy in life, Busy with day, struggles and strive, We are all busy with love in our heart, To get that right first start, We miss out on life each day, Where we could have our say, So, live each moment as new, Where life would feel to be true! ~Owen Walker Holidays After Santa comes I run downstairs, To open up my stocking. Once a year I run around my yard, Hunting Easter Eggs. Whenever I don’t get pinched, For wearing new green shoes. I get to go see fireworks, Every 4th of July. When February 14th rolls around, Everyone gets chocolate. Dressing up and getting free candy, 2 weeks after my birthday. Eating turkey and getting out of school, While giving thanks for all I have. ~ John Marker Fraker

Trees are being set up and decorated. Kids are writing their list of wishes. Snow covers the stores handing out gifts. Happiness is shown throughout everything. Every town shining with colored lights. Windows are filled with decorations to give joy. Children run around their snow covered homes. Gifts are being wrapped with shiny paper. Smiles spread across everyone’s faces. Underneath the tree is filled with presents. The days until the holiday is here are being counted. Excitement rushes through everyone’s mind. Humans We all begin as equals But humans change how they define themselves. Yet Beneath it all Everyone bleeds. There is no gold Flowing through the veins Of even the richest among us Nor is there coal As black as night The symbol of working hands No money Nor precious metals Being pumped through any heart If you strip away status If you take away the money If you leave humans on their own You will soon begin to realize That beneath it all Everyone bleeds Everyone bleeds ~ Sydnee Hope 52
Basketball Hot weather makes practices exhaust me. Stressful drills leave teams down and sorrowful. During rest, we get shade under a tree, Afterwards we all feel more powerful. As games start, player's energy released. The coaches encouraged and reassured. Score becomes tied and needs to be increased, Another point is scored and win secured. Feelings of joy and triumph fill the court. The other team is sad and defeated. We celebrate this great, wonderful sport. If all goes right, it shall be repeated. Through hard work and dedication the game is won. This amazing sport is very fun. ~Keegan Speek

Do You Think I’m Beautiful? You sit in a room not daring to leave. You are not harmed, yet you feel as if you have been impaled. As you spy around the corridor, you see a letter. You peek in, it’s addressed to “beauty.” Though you are confused, you read on. “I don’t understand” were the first words written down, you pause. Next, you see different handwriting, it says “I know.” “I feel broken, shunned by my peers.” “I know” was replied again. “I am hated, and friendless.” “I know” was replied once more. You start reading more, but hesitate. “Do you think I’m beautiful?” ...There was no response. You set down the letter with a sigh. Shambling further down the hall, you mumble to yourself. “Oh well…” “Better luck next time.’ you say as you fade into the darkness ~Caleb Tanis 58

What Are We Doing? If you ever go to a city Here’s what you might see A factory, A construction site, Aiming to build something big. Have you ever thought of the consequences Of what we’re doing to this world? Acres of destruction, Forests being turned into nothing more than wood. Boats sailing on the water, Vehicles moving everywhere, New highways being constructed, Now we’re taking on the air. We are just letting all this happen Watching new buildings go up It is time to do something More than making it all worse. ~Gina Shome 60
Homes People live in them. They make life enjoyable. They protect you. They help you. They keep your possessions. They provide shelter. They are home sweet home. They provide hiding places. Not everyone has one. Some call boxes home. Some call abandoned buildings home. Everyone deserves a home. We can make a difference. ~William Wright
Music’s Effect Music puts all our thoughts together. It helps us think about our favorite times. It brings back old memories. The words remind us of everything we have. Songs can also make us forget these things. We can get lost in all the words. The sound can help us forget about the world around us. Our other thoughts can be drained from us. Overall, music controls what we think about. It can bring sad thoughts. Songs can remind us of what we love most. It can make new memories that we’ll never forget. ~Audrey Langworthy 61
Life’s Like Candy Life is like candy There are many different flavors At times it can be sweet and everything seems perfect Or it can be sour and everything seems terrible But the taste always wears out after time No matter how sour life seems It will always end up sweet And if everything seems sweet Eventually it’ll be sour So next time everything seems like it’s as sour as possible Just think about how sweet it’ll be in the end And when it seems like it can’t be sweeter Live it up! ~Jake Hanners 62
Confusion… Everyone feels this emotion sometimes. Confusion is common to feel when you are unsure. So many things in this modern world are confusing. If you think about it, it can make you hate this generation confusion can make you feel alone, or stupid. Confusion and fear lead us. People now are making poor choices. Hate is destroying mankind. Everything has gone to trash. Confusion, becomes fear. Fear, becomes hate. Hate leads the charge against world peace. We will never be free from this nightmare. At this rate, we’ll blow up before we can all get along. People are cruel. Sins fuel the hate and the confusion and the fear. Being sinless is the only way to achieve complete peace Yet, we cannot be mortal without sins So, will we ever be able to get along? Confusion… We will never escape war It truly is impossible. ~Caleb Tannis

The Ermine Three golden silk dresses, Three brown bag dresses, One magnificent castle, One farm. Everyday no stress, no frustration Everyday is forever, never ending work These are the things that define us Having it all or none at all Flawless lives and money to spend, Dirt grounds and the blinding fire of the sun, Royalty is all that you want, But what you can’t have Secretive murders and fight for power, Happy days with no hidden page, .What you can’t see, Will be the death of you ~ Stephanie Xian Equality- Anthem Essay “Then we thought of the meaning of that which lay before us. We can light our tunnel, and the City, and all the Cities in the world with nothing save metal and wires. We can give our brothers a new, light, cleaner and brighter, than any they have ever known,”(60). Equality 7-521 was born into a society where individualism is forbidden, and a dystopian setting is seen. Every person is insisted to be the same as others. Anything different such as gifts and talents are greatly eschewed. Equality 7- 2521 is “ born with a curse . It has always driven us to thoughts which are forbidden,” (18). Along with his great intelligence, he had an unstoppable curiosity to be different. Having these traits have modulated his place in the society but given him a higher place intellectually. The Council saw these attributes and in an attempt to stop his intellectual progress and to humble him, they placed him in the Home of the Street Sweepers. But this didn’t cease him from gaining ground, and his eagerness to learn would not be diminished. His 64
burning curiosity led him to discovery a tunnel from the Unmentionable Times. That is where his real work begins. Equality’s main motive is a journey to gain self wisdom or individuality in his collectivist society. He grasps that he is incommensurable from his peers. Not only is Equality 7-2521 intellectually grand, he also has the mentality and is physiological lucid of the world around him. “ We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the grand WE, One, indivisible and forever. We repeat this to ourselves, but it helps us not,” (19). The society strives for all the people to fall in line and be all identical but Equality is very different. In his tunnel, Equality begins to study. He learns and “ in these two years we have learned more than we had learned in the ten years of the Home of the Student,” (36). He apprehends that he was placed in the Home of the Street Sweepers to dim his need to be different which is why he strives to continue his path of seeking wisdom. He was taught that only the many Scholars could posses knowledge and the extensive amount of sagacity. “ We do not know, but we shall learn. We cannot stop now, even though it frightens us that we are alone in our knowledge,” (http://www.noblesoul.com/orc/texts/anthem/complete.html). He is afraid of that the comprehension of his actions will cause him much grief but he also understands that “No single one can possess greater wisdom than the many Scholars who are elected by all men for their wisdom. Yet we can. We do. We have fought against saying it, but now it is said,” (http://www.noblesoul.com/orc/texts/anthem/complete.html). His joy is brought through the need to grab onto improved information. The Home of Street Sweepers is where the Council throws the unwanted citizens of their society and Equality’s high intelligence helps hims see through the clinging cloud the Council has placed over his peers. He knows that his attributes had been discovered and the society refused to place him in his respective Home to lower his reasoning. This is why his invention brings him joy and happiness. His inquisitiveness would not be subsided. “So much is still to be learned! So long a road lies before us, and what care we if we must travel it alone,” (http://www.noblesoul.com/orc/texts/anthem/complete.html). His care for the rules is gone and is replaced by great motivation to achieve all that he can reach. Equality is right to be motivated the way he is. Not only is he trying to help his society by bringing forth a phenomenon, but he is also trying to gather all that he can mentally hold. He is not doing anyone any harm except for the fact that he is breaking many of his society's rules. Everyone knows the famous saying “ Rules are meant to be broken.” They are mainly guidelines to string you along. Equality has the right to break these laws. He conceives that he has already broken many rules but he doesn't not have a care in the world. He does slightly fear what the consequences are with him grasping this wisdom and material. He is breaking these rules for what can be perceived as a good cause for his journey to individualism and the commonwealth. He has solved many mysteries the Scholars had not been able to crack in many years with his self taught education. Gaining a more elaborate education was never recognized as an unacceptable concept in today's world. Being motivated in the ways Equality is can also be disastrous in a large quantity. If everyone was influenced in an educational way, the world could go two ways. We would have 65
either a exceptional economy and many new discoveries resulting in an phenomenal wealth or the world would be chaos. Having motivation can be the sole thing that drives an population and what happens within. If the motivation was timid and manageable as well as being within borders, than the people would prosper with wealth and great gifts. Equality was motivated to gain his own knowledge and flourish which can be identified as being selfish but for the way his community was formatted and presented to the population, his way of thinking can is extraordinary. The world could also be in complete and utter mayhem. The motivation can be registered in a completely different manner. If everyone decided to stop following the rules and believe they have a valid reason to be breaking them, that is what would cause the disorganization.
Self understanding and distinctiveness is what Equality 7-2521 strives to have and it is his most crucial reason to be motivated. His life in a collectivist society is dimming his comprehension of common brain power. He himself understands that he is very different from his many peers. Equality also knows that the Council is punishing him, so his motivation to be different and to excel is completely adequate. His society is set so not one individual is allowed to be divergent or have any exceptional talents, so for him to break the rules for his own good and the common peoples can be perceived as noble. Equality’s motivation also brings him the joy and prosperity he was not allowed to have and was deprived of when the council saw right through him. Not only is he fulfilling his duties to himself, but he is also assisting the much needed growth for his community. Individualism is what Equality seeks to find and to have even though he is denied any way close to it, so motivation is the way to reach out and take hold of it for him. His “light box” is his zen and the most optimum decision for him to make for his expedition to wisdom and individualism. His motivation is pellucid and anticipated as morally correct. ~Stephanie Xian

Consequences of War What are the consequences of War?
Death Destruction Domination Shame Sorrow Pain These are the Consequences of War. Glory Joy Riches Triumph Protection Liberation These are the Consequences of War. War is an evil most necessary. War is a deplorable act. War needs to stop. War must continue. Man is selfish. Man is greedy. Man knows no limits. Man is good. Man is righteous. Throughout the ages, war has been a common part of mankind. Are we too quick to war with one another? Or are we too slow? ~Turner Eades 68
The End I wonder how the world will end Possibly Earth could descend Descend into outer space And maybe the other planets would be on a chase A chase of descension, another dimension Putting us in great suspension I wonder how the world will void Possibly an asteroid An asteroid that we could not defend An asteroid whose path won't bend I wonder how Earth will expire Maybe even an enormous fire A fire putting people in great desire that it will end The end of the world may be never The world may just last forever ~Anonymous

ANTHEM ESSAY Ayn Rand wrote the novel Anthem to criticize the collectivist societies of her day. The story is set in a place
where all people are considered to be one, “I” is an unspeakable word, and it is illegal to be alone. Her main character, Equality 7-2521, who later renames himself Prometheus, feels apart from the rest of his “brothers”. He finds a secret tunnel underground and begins to conduct experiments which lead to his discovery of a “glass box” that makes light. Prometheus takes his invention to the scholars, whose most recent discovery was the candle, 200 years ago. The Scholars are outraged that he made something without the “collective mind”. Upset by their rejection, Prometheus runs away from the town with nothing but his invention. Eventually he is joined by his companion the “Golden One”. They travel to the mountains and eventually find a house from the unmentionable times (times before the society that prometheus inhabits). This is where Prometheus has his revelation. He discovers the word I and, ego becomes holy to him. During his internal monologue which makes up the last couple of chapters in Anthem, Prometheus says “The word which can never die on this earth, for it is the heart of it and the meaning and the glory. The sacred word: ego.” (Rand 105). His naming of ego as sacred makes it apparent that Prometheus is an egoist. According to Merriam Webster, an egoist is “a believer in egoism”. Egoism is “a doctrine that individual self-interest is the actual motive of all conscious action”, and “that individual self-interest is the valid end of all actions”. Prometheus’s thoughts conform to this definition, such as when he states “My happiness is not the means to any end. It is the end. It is its own goal. It is its own purpose.” (Rand 95). Prometheus’s philosophy is very definite. He has no exceptions or compromises to his opinions. This compilation of facts serves as further evidence that Prometheus is an egoist, and an established one at that (at the end of the novel where this particular quote is from, not necessarily during the earlier sections).
70
In general, being an egoist is considered a bad thing. Theoretically though, being an egoist doesn’t hurt anyone. Ayn Rand’s Essay “The Soul of an Individualist” describes forward thinking individuals and their interactions with the rest of society with the following example: “Thousands of years ago, the first man discovered how to make fire. He was probably burned at the stake he had taught his brothers to light”. Rand goes on to give a few more examples of how revolutionary people have been persecuted over the years. Rand reveals that all of these individuals have something in common: they were not motivated by a desire to help others. They knew that the “others”, or the rest of society, would not want their innovation. People have a tendency to resist change. These forward thinking individuals would have learned this as they saw their fellow progressives persecuted for their ideas and creations. So inventors, architects, musicians and infinite other types of innovators all work for a common cause, which is not “for the good of the people”. There is no way they could be working for the good of the people because they know that their gifts to the people will be rejected. Therefore, the only reason remaining these innovators would continue to struggle is for the personal enjoyment that they find in their work. Passion that breakthrough individuals find in their work motivates them to step apart from the crowd, do something unheard of, and in the end change the world. For example, in Anthem, Prometheus says “Our discovery is too great for us to waste our time in sweeping the streets. We must not keep our secret to ourselves, not buried under the ground. We must bring it into the sight of men. We need all our time, we need the work rooms of the Home of the Scholars, we want the help of our brother Scholars and their wisdom joined to ours. There is so much work ahead for all of us, for all the Scholars of the world.” (Rand 60). Prometheus wants to present his creation to the House of Scholars so that he can become a Scholar, not for the good of the people. The reason Prometheus works on his creation is because he enjoys his work. This is a main ideal of egoism (that self interest is the valid end to all actions), and Prometheus certainly feels that his happiness is a valid and final reason for his work. Another way Prometheus’s egoist philosophy is made clear can be found through what he says when discussing his discovery. “We forget all men, all laws and all things save our metals and our wires. So much is still to be learned! So long a road lies before us, and what care we if we must travel it alone!” (Rand 54). Prometheus is not concerned with what other people think of him or his invention. He doesn’t see an issue with being different from
71
others if that allows him to continue his work and find happiness in it, which in the egoist fashion is the only validation Prometheus needs. Not all pioneers are unreserved egoists. Nevertheless, to put so much effort into a creation that they know will likely be rejected requires at least tinge of egoism, a contentedness to work for their own pleasure. Few people are true egoists, but many people have adopted at least a partially egoist way of thinking. While egoism doesn’t directly lead to the instantaneous creation of breakthrough individuals, egoist elements are needed for these individuals to continue their work. Egoists and the ideas of egoism are necessary for human improvement. Whether society realizes it or not, they are benefitted by egoists. Their philosophies give progressives a reason to continue in their work, improving life for people of all philosophies and beliefs. Life would be substantially worse for everyone if egoist ideas were not in place to give innovators a reason to work. So it follows that egoists and their beliefs are good for everyone, or in more of an egoist way of speaking, good for the individual innovator and his or her happiness. -Madeline Bruce ANTHEM ESSAY Egoism is defined by Merriam-Webster as "a doctrine that individual self-interest is the actual motive of all conscious action." Ayn Rand’s Anthem tells the story of a man named Equality 7-2521, who eventually gives himself the name Prometheus. Equality thinks better of himself than his brothers because of his above-average intelligence, which motivates him to achieve things believed to be impossible. The world he lives in has convinced him that to be an egoist or to have individual thought is sinful. The Soul of an Individualist of the same author similarly discusses the morality of standing for oneself in spite of the opinions of the masses. She writes, "No creator was prompted by a desire to serve his brothers, for his brothers rejected the gift he offered and that gift destroyed the slothful routine of their lives... He held his truth above all things and above all men," (The Soul of an Individualist). Equality is motivated by his own will, and his personal desires helped him accomplish great things. He does things his brothers never dreamed of, all on his own account, all for himself. As aforementioned, Equality names himself "Prometheus" by the end of the novel. Prometheus is a Greek deity who is said to have stolen fire from the gods and brought it to mankind. The legendary god did what he thought best regardless of the other gods, and was motivated by the idea of his accomplishment. Equality took his discovery of the light bulb and studied it without forethought

of his brothers, unless they were beneficial to himself, proven when the only times he expressed concern for the thoughts of others was when he spoke of how they would praise him or how certain people benefit him: he liked the Golden One because he thought she was pretty, he spent time with International 4-8818 because he thought he was funny, and he admired the Saint of the Pyre because he inspired him. He never showed compassion to anyone other than those who had proved to be beneficial to him. Prometheus admired the Council of the Scholars because he thought that they should have praised him for his invention of electricity, and when they rejected his idea, he became spiteful. Prometheus places self-preservation and glory above his brothers. Ayn Rand also speaks about egoism in The Soul of the Individualist, "To think, to feel, to judge, to act are functions of the ego... The creator served nothing and no one. He lived for himself." Rand's definition of egoism is almost a description of the main character of Anthem. Prometheus sees the word "ego" as a holy word. He holds the value of self above the value of a society. He realizes that what motivates one person does not necessarily motivate another; it is unique to a person's ideals, lifestyle, mind, and experiences. Rand believes that accomplishments are made through motivation and intelligence, which cannot be shared. This is detailed in her speech: There is no such thing as a collective brain. There is no such thing as a collective thought. An agreement reached by a group of men is only a compromise or an average drawn upon many individual thoughts. It is a secondary consequence. The primary act -- the process of reason -- must be performed by each man alone. We can divide a meal among many men. We cannot digest it in a collective stomach. No man can use his lungs to breathe for another man. No man can use his brain to think for another. All the functions of the body and spirit are private. They cannot be shared or transferred. (The Soul of an Individualist). These words seem to come out of Prometheus' mouth. He realizes that socialistic beliefs are flawed because everyone lives for themselves. "But we think that the Council of Scholars is blind. The secrets of this earth are not for all men to see, but only for those who will seek them." (Rand, 52). Prometheus is motivated by himself, for himself, which means that he will achieve what he achieves purely because he wants to. Egoism is commonly considered a bad thing — today, people argue about egoism's relation with narcissism because it is about placing oneself above others. However, is it actually wrong to care more for oneself than others if it produces something great for others? Poor connotation is the only thing that holds the belief that egoism is negative together: there is a fine line between narcissism and motivation found in self-interest, and egoism has been dropped in the middle. Egoism is a doctrine that values the self, but does not necessarily demerit others. Prometheus held no grudge against others for their lack of understanding -- he did not think of his brothers as inherently bad -- he only thought that he was better because had proved himself to be so. His belief gave him the inspiration to accomplish what he did. Egoism is the only thing that would allow Prometheus, or anyone without drive, to accomplish amazing things.

Prometheus shares all the qualities that Rand describes as an individualist, an egoist. He places himself above others and works by and for himself. However, this is what allowed him to achieve greater things than any of his brothers could even dream of. Should a motive be important if it produces something that would have been otherwise impossible? Whether or not it was for the benefit of himself, an accomplishment is an accomplishment; a light bulb is a light bulb is a light bulb. Bibliography Rand, Ayn, and Leonard Peikoff. Anthem.
