Page 1

Ugh! You're such a dumb blonde! Everybody has either heard or said this or something like this. I certainly have .The use of this stereotype has skyrocketed in the past century . A stereotype is a preconceived idea about a person or thing. Saying all blondes are dumb is like believing gamers are always nerds or that all Americans are fat. Stereotyping is not the way this century wants to be remem-

Where Did This Stereotype Come From The blonde stereotype has been around for a while. There are a few different theories as to how it started. One of the most common has some truth to it. Some say that over time blondes started to be viewed as pretty party girls. Because of this people believe that blondes are only focused on their looks and not academics. This is a popular theory and one that has been popularized by books and movie throughout the years. One example of movie like this is Mean Girls. In Mean Girls, Regina George (Rachel McAdams) and Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried) are two of the plastics. The plastics are the most popular girls in school, and yes, they are blondes. In Mean Girls they were also the girls who went to all the parties and failed all of their tests. This movie is one of the many that stereotypes blondes in a bad manor. Other theories include people who bleach their hair are dumb, peasants with lighter hair because of the sun are dumber than the royalty, and some people think that “ they were just born dumb.

bered. The dumb blonde stereotype could possibly help create jokes that you think are funny, but sometimes they hurt people. In fact in this article explains the science behind dumb blondes, the origin, types of blonde stereotypes and how being called a dumb blonde affects people.

How this stereotype Affects People This stereotype can affect people in different ways. The way this affects people depends on how they choose to take it. Some individuals take it as bullying, however there are some who believe it is a way for them to stand out and be noticed. The first portion of people who get offended by it can be offended for a few reasons. 1) They know they are usually smarter than the people calling them dumb 2) They realize guys are blonds too 3) They don't like feeling like

they don’t belong and are being discriminated (this can be dangerous to be around). The other feeling people get after being called a dumb blonde is the complete opposite. They get the feeling that they are special and unique. Everybody is special in their own way, these people believe it's because of their hair color. This type of person can also believe that it gives them attention; which is true blondes generally get more attention. This attention can be because they are

tr ying to b e a d umb blonde. This actually happens more than one would think, some girls who are blonde try to act dumb just to get attentions. That is not the type of attention a girl needs.

Are there any actual facts behind “dumb blonde There are no known facts that prove the theory that blondes are more dumb than other females (the only people actually getting called dumb blonde are females). In fact, there is recent scientific evidence that proves there is no huge gap between blondes, brunettes, and redheads and their level of Intellect. There is only one small genetic code change in chromosome twelve that causes people to be blonde. This change is having to do with adenine and guanine. Adenine and guanine are two of the main nucleobases that make up DNA .When an adenine changes to a

guanine it results in lighter hair. One extra guanine instead of an adenine only affects the hair follicles and not eye color or brain-cells. This shows that being a blonde does not affect intelligence. There was another study done that showed how men believed how smart people were just by looking at pictures. Here is the twist: all of the pictures were of four of the exactly same person except for one thing, hair color. Men were asked to rate them on their intelligence one to four, one being the smartest. The rankings were, 1)Brunette 2) black hair 3) redheads 4) blondes. This shows how stereo-

typical this world is. People calling other people dumb blonde should really check their IQ before criticizing others based on their prejudices.

Other Blonde Stereotypes Blondes are not just stereotyped as dumb. There are multiple blonde stereotypes that don't really have anything to do with intelligence 1)blondes are weak 2)blondes are only interested in their looks 3) blondes are popular 4) blondes always get their way 5) blondes are mean. These are just few of the many stereotypes that the world today has come up with about blondes. Most of these stereotypes have come about the same way the dumb blonde one has; through movies and book that portray

blondes in that way. Yet again, Mean Girls is an example of this. The two blonde “ plastics are only interested in their looks, self-absorbed, popular, always get their way, and very mean. Stereotypes like this have corrupted the world.

Conclusion All blondes are not dumb! This stereotype hurts people or even cause them to get bad grades because they think they have to live up to the stereotype. Just because popular movies like Mean Girls portrays blondes as dumb does not mean they are. All of the blonde stereotypes have little to NO facts that prove the theory, that is why they are called stereotypes! When you blurt out a preconceived idea about people it does not always

show you are the smartest person in the room. People need to think about how something affects others before they say it, because sometimes it can hurt them. This goes for all stereotypes around the world. Not all gamers are nerds, not all Americans are fat, and definitely, definitely, not all blondes are dumb!
