AcademicsAtBrockport The world is changing. Rapidly. And as technology evolves, the environment shifts, and complex global issues continue to emerge, it is impossible to predict exactly what the future holds. An education from The College at Brockport, State University of New York, ensures our students will be ready for whatever it brings. The Brockport academic experience instills in its students an intellectual curiosity that will help them leap life’s hurdles. The core of this experience is an environment that stresses the development of superior skills in writing, speaking, critical thinking and mathematical analysis — abilities that will always be in high demand. Those courses are complemented by a vast array of professional programs that prepare students for the career of their choice. Academic life at Brockport isn’t confined to the four walls of a classroom or even to the perimeters of its campus. Students at the undergraduate level conduct original research, pursue scholarly and creative works, complete internships and study abroad. Our 19:1 student/faculty ratio creates opportunities for students to collaborate with our dynamic faculty and often results in invaluable relationships that last a lifetime. You won’t just get a teacher. You’ll get a mentor.

DiscoverOurSchools School of The Arts, Humanities And Social Sciences The School of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences casts an eye to the future — and teaches our students to do the same. The workforce of the future will require an understanding of our global community. And it will demand prolific writing, speaking and critical thinking skills. Each of our students are encouraged to experience the world during their time at Brockport. Employers are seeking individuals who are bilingual and who have demonstrated an ability to problem solve in a foreign environment. Each of the many international experiences we offer provides our students with an invaluable opportunity to see the world through a different lens. Our students are asked to write, to discuss, to question and to engage. But it doesn’t stop there. Our faculty are committed to helping our students develop those writing, speaking and critical thinking skills. It happens through in-classroom instruction, prodding, encouragement and through regular feedback that aims to hone and refine those key abilities. Armed with these skills and global experiences, our graduates leave Brockport prepared to positively impact the world.

MariahMaloney, MFA Professor Mariah Maloney has danced all over the world with modern dance icon Trisha Brown and is nationally recognized in her field. Today, through her work in Brockport’s Dance Department, Maloney conducts research and teaches the craft while working to create opportunities for her students. “This year, I facilitated exposure and opportunity for 24 students to be involved in the professional dance world as performers, scholars, and educators,” Maloney says. “The ongoing wealth of learning that weaves in and out of and walks alongside teaching, scholarship and relationship building is awesome at Brockport. I am blessed to be spending my life engaged in this important work.”

We offer an ever-evolving array of intellectual opportunities that encourage our students to be creative, collaborative, and curious. Here are a few examples: • An interdisciplinary Fine Arts course that combines Art, Theatre & Music and Dance

• The Departments of History and Anthropology have

developed an interdisciplinary minor in Museum Studies and Public History

• The Department of English has partnered with our pre-

law program to create courses that emphasize writing and language skills

• A fast-track combined degree program that culminates in a

BA/BS in Sociology and a master’s of Public Administration (4+1)

• Numerous independent studies are available, examples

include: video production art installations, and anthropological site excavation

DiscoverOurSchools School of Business Administration And Economics Remarkable value. That’s what students receive from our School of Business Administration and Economics. Brockport is one of just 672 institutions in the world that is accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) — the gold standard in business education. That puts our business school in the top five percent of business schools internationally, while our students pay one of the lowest tuition rates in the nation. Our world-class faculty are passionate about teaching undergraduate students and preparing them for meaningful and successful careers. This instruction takes place in an intimate atmosphere that is conducive to learning and mentoring. And while teaching is their top priority, they are also active scholars who stay current in their disciplines. Internships provide our students with an invaluable pipeline into professional practice. And often, Brockport is presented with more internship opportunities for our students than we are able to fill. That’s because they arrive ready to work. For example, our finance students have the opportunity to become Bloomberg certified. We possess the same Bloomberg terminal that they’ll be asked to use by their employer when they enter the field. But for our students, no training is necessary.

SandeepSingh, PhD Dr. Sandeep Singh, professor of finance, sees the School of Business Administration and Economics at The College at Brockport as a program on the rise. “We are doing many unique things that will make the school stand apart and excel.” From the new Bloomberg terminals to international competitions, Brockport business students are on the path for success. Students are being accepted to more competitive graduate programs, finding better jobs and moving up the corporate ladder more quickly.

Brockport business graduates are in high demand. Below is a small sampling of where our recent graduates have started their careers: • Aramark • Citigroup • Coca-Cola • Enterprise • JP Morgan Chase • KPMG • Merrill Lynch Wealth Management • Paychex, Inc. • Target • Thermo-Fisher Scientific • United Airlines • Xerox

DiscoverOurSchools School of Education and Human Services Students come to our School of Education and Human Services seeking to become a social worker, counselor, teacher, public or school administrator or a criminal justice practitioner — and they acquire a blend of practical and theoretical knowledge that equips them to do just that. They’ll also be prepared to make a positive impact on society. Each student’s education — regardless of major — addresses three key themes: Ethics: Our graduates won’t always have a supervisor standing over them. They’ll be independent practitioners. Therefore, making ethical decisions should be intuitive. We’ll ensure that it is. Diversity/cultural competence: Each community is unique. We develop practitioners who appreciate the richness of the communities they serve and possess the skills necessary to effectively engage with complex societies. Social justice: Our students believe that their chosen profession should have a social benefit. They are encouraged to discover ways they can take what they learned during their Brockport experience and advocate on behalf of disadvantaged populations. Practical skills along with these key competencies combine to prepare our students for long, successful and difference-making careers in their field of choice.

AnnW.Bunch, PhD Dr. Ann Bunch is a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology, an accomplishment that less than 100 individuals can claim. She has traveled the world, to far-reaching sites from Vietnam to Russia, identifying missing service members and civilians. Bunch seeks to translate those real-word experiences to her students. “I teach to instill a habit of critical thinking: to inspire my students to ask ‘why?’ At the end of the day, they need to be able to arrive at the ‘aha’ moments for themselves.”

DiscoverOurSchools School of Health And Human Performance Students in our School of Health and Human Performance are the beneficiaries of top-flight instruction from some of the finest faculty in the country—faculty who choose to come to Brockport because they want to spend a considerable portion of their time in a classroom, not strictly in a research laboratory. They work hard to ensure that our students’ education is not only grounded in sound theory, but that they have an opportunity to put that theory into practice. Nearly every program within the school requires students to complete an internship before graduating. That’s because we believe that an undergraduate experience is not complete without an opportunity to apply the skills learned in the classroom. By the time they complete their degree, students are not only familiar with their program content, but understand the importance of reading, writing, and thinking critically. Faculty create opportunities to develop vital skills like analyzing problems, weighing evidence, developing arguments and deriving conclusions. This ensures that our students will leave Brockport prepared for their careers — and for their lives.

ElizabethHeavey, PhD Dr. Elizabeth Heavey brings both passion and high expectations to the Nursing program. She engages students in her research, listens to their input and at the end of the day, is proud of the nurses they become. “We are producing nurses you can trust with your loved ones. When I encounter a nurse trained at Brockport, I know my child is safe in his or her care.”

DiscoverOurSchools School of Science And Mathematics Departments in the School of Science and Mathematics are enthusiastic partners in the national effort, Educate to Innovate, and they strive to produce graduates who are prepared and eager to make a difference in society. Our formula: outstanding faculty + state-of-the-art facilities + high impact practices through faculty/student collaboration = a transformational educational experience. Outstanding faculty: Our award-winning faculty members are active scholars and passionate teachers. They stay involved in their fields by engaging in research and discovery. Their demonstrable enthusiasm for the subjects they teach motivates students and captures their imagination. State-of-the-art facilities: In recent years, the State of New York has invested $30 million to modernize our facilities, providing students and faculty with premier space for learning and research. Our top-notch laboratory equipment allows students to gain valuable, hands-on experience. Faculty/student collaboration: Many undergraduates earn the opportunity to work alongside faculty on research projects—a process that stokes curiosity and enhances knowledge. Faculty interact oneon-one with students in a number of different settings and mentor them so that they can reach their fullest potential.

JacquesRinchard, PhD Undergraduate students are essential to the research conducted by Jacques Rinchard, PhD, who teaches in our Department of Environmental Science and Biology. He hires them to work in his research laboratory and takes them out onto Lake Ontario to conduct fieldwork. “Lectures are beneficial, but giving our students the opportunity to be hands-on out in the field or in the lab is even more important,” says Rinchard, who examines the reproductive potential of key fish species in the Great Lakes. “We put our students in a position where they are working with the same equipment and doing the types of things they’ll be doing in their careers.”

Our graduates have gone on to pursue doctor of philosophy and professional degrees, including doctor of medicine, doctor of veterinary medicine, and doctor of dentistry, at an array of prestigious institutions. Here is a sampling from recent years: • Cornell University • Duke University • Massachusetts Institute of Technology • Stony Brook University • The Ohio State University • University at Buffalo • University of Colorado • University of Maryland • University of Michigan • University of North Carolina • University of Rochester • University of Wisconsin • Virginia Tech

OurAcademicExperience We encourage our students to take advantage of key active learning opportunities that will enrich their time at Brockport and, most importantly, prepare them for life after Brockport. Take a look at what some of our current students have done:

School of The Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Jill Stewardson had her eyes opened in the summer of 2013 when she participated in Brockport’s Archaeological Field school in Jordan. She learned about more than archaeology. She learned about another culture. “I learned that I can disagree with another culture but still respect it. I now have a whole new perspective.”

School of Business Administration and Economics By the end of her sophomore year, Mary Dray possessed the skills necessary to be coveted by a Fortune 100 company. She spent her summer working to increase AT&T’s market share in upstate New York. “I learned about branding and how we, as employees, must present ourselves to the public in order to make the biggest difference.”

School of Education and Human Services Andrew Walik emerged from his research methods class with three things he never expected: an interest in academic research, an opportunity to present at a national conference, and a mentor in Professor Melchor de Guzman. “I was hesitant to take on a research project, but Dr. de Guzman helped ease my fears and helped me become more confident.”

School of Health and Human Performance Spending a week coaching an athlete at Camp Abilities, a one-week sports camp for children with visual impairments, gave Stephanie Bond the opportunity to put the skills she learned in her adapted physical education classes into action. “It was the best experience of my college career. I learned just as much from the kids as they learned from me.”

School of Science and Mathematics Matt Luther’s summer job was anything but typical. He spent his summer inside a Brockport research laboratory—preparing for his future. Matt researched the role of the Rad52 protein in nuclear and mitochondrial DNA regulation. “It’s invaluable. I had the opportunity to work full-time doing something in my field.” To learn more, visit: www.brockport.edu/greater
