A Letter from the Dean Greetings: I am sure you are all aware of the current state budget constraints facing the SUNY system. The Fine Arts Series at The College at Brockport is certainly feeling the pinch, as is the rest of the campus, but rest assured we are committed to providing the highest quality dance, theatre, visual arts and music to our audiences. Even with financial hardships, the arts are thriving at Brockport. And they are thriving not only on our own stages but, with our students’ participation, all around Rochester. This past year, theatre students appeared alongside professional actors in the Geva Theatre Center productions of Amadeus and A Christmas Carol. DANSCORE made the first of its annual appearances at the Hochstein School of Music and Dance, and the Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble toured throughout Western New York. Undergraduate students in the visual arts exhibited works in galleries across the region, and mentored students at Rochester’s School of the Arts. And our new Brockport Chamber Orchestra performed in various suburbs. I could not be prouder of how our arts programs have transcended the campus. Yet the College’s Fine Arts Series continues to be the center of this creative activity. After setting a site-specific piece on Brockport dancers last year, choreographer Monica Bill Barnes will return to the campus this season with her entire company. The Tower Fine Arts Gallery will exhibit works by illustrator Walter Haskell Hinton and, in an interdisciplinary collaboration, the stark photography of Lucinda Devlin will help illuminate the Department of Theatre’s production of Coyote on a Fence. This prison drama will give way to musical theatre mayhem with The Rocky Horror Show. Other highlights include the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and a homecoming for folksinger/humorist Christine Lavin ’73, celebrating her 25th anniversary as a recording and performing artist. Monica Bill Barnes Monica Bill Barnes & Company is a contemporary dance company that celebrates individuality, humor and the innate theatricality of everyday life. After creating the site-specific work “Possible Weather� for Brockport dancers last season, the department of dance was eager to present the entire company in concerts that present their unique point of view. Monica Bill Barnes & Company will be in residency from Tuesday, September 6 through Friday, September 9. Mellon Foundation, the Community Connections, fund of the MetLife Foundation and the Bowing Company Charitable Trust.
DANCE/Hartwell Inspiration can strike our undergraduate and graduate choreographers in any number of ways. These adjudicated concerts are a perfect way to inspire our audiences, as well. MFA thesis choreography by Rebecca McArthur and Mariko Yamada will be featured in the Fall 2011 concerts, while the Spring 2012 concerts will present thesis works by Sarah Bennett and Hannah Seidel. Kodzas/Sneider/Nelson: Guitars in the Round Petar Kodzas, Bob Sneider and Kinloch Nelson will explore their individual musical roots with works written for jazz, classical, Latin, folk and modern fingerstyle guitar. Christine Lavin: My 25th Anniversary Concert: What Was I (EVER!) Thinking? This Brockport alumna (’73) has made her mark internationally as a singer, satirist and raconteur extraordinaire. During her concert she will share some of her early hits while introducing her latest songs, all the while weaving hilarious stories through her music, reflecting on the people, events, near disasters and minor miracles that have defined her life and music. As folksy as she is charming, join Lavin for a knitting circle prior to the show. This concert is sponsored in part by the Office of Alumni Relations and Development.

The Mambo Kings Together since 1995, The Mambo Kings are Western New York’s foremost Latin/Jazz ensemble, and have developed a national reputation for their explosive blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz improvisation. They made their orchestral debut with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and have gone on to appear with the symphony orchestras of Baltimore, Vancouver, Detroit, and Dallas. During the course of one day in Venice, the butler manages to turn several lives upside down, and then right side up. Complicating things are one woman engaged to two men (one of whom may not be who he purports to be), one lovelorn maidservant, a generous amount of swordplay, and a tantalizingly delicious feast. Walter Haskell Hinton: The Golden Age of Illustration On loan from the University of Tennessee, this collection includes original drawings, watercolors, and oil paintings representing Hinton’s prolific career as an illustrator. His images of the American West, outdoor recreation, and scenes of domestic bliss graced magazine covers and calendars in the first half of the 20th century, and are reminiscent of a time in American history that is all but extinct. Photo Media Invitational Curated by Kitty Hubbard, Associate Professor of Art This exhibit highlights the diversity of media and messages communicated through photo-based media. Work ranges from web-based projects to traditional and non-traditional prints, artist books, installation, and much, much more. Photography is here to stay, and it will continue to evolve as an essential means of creative media and communication. Lucinda Devlin: The Omega Suites Devlin photographed execution chambers, holding cells and viewing rooms in penitentiaries in 20 states, thereby bringing focus to the debate on the death penalty, one of the great ethical questions still facing American citizens. This exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Department of Theatre’s production of Coyote on a Fence, which portrays the lives of two prisoners on murderer’s row. and
On and Off the Wall: Paper as Art Since its development in second century China, paper has primarily been used in artistic practices as a flat surface for the application of other materials. With the advent of origami in 17th century Japan, artists have embraced paper as a primary resource, and have continued to explore its dimensional and organic possibilities. Policies Late Seating: After the curtain rises, seating will be at the discretion of house management. You may not be seated until a suitable break in the performance, which might be intermission. Recordings: All cameras and video or sound recorders are strictly prohibited. Access: The theatres at The College at Brockport have barrier-free access. Wheelchairs: Wheelchair seating, and adjacent seating for companions, is available. Please inform the Box Office of your special needs when placing your ticket order. Hearing Devices: An infrared audio system is available in the Tower Fine Arts Center Mainstage. With these individual receivers, patrons can now augment the sound for any of the performances in this venue. Emeriti: Emeriti are entitled to one complimentary ticket for each event. Parking Until 6:30 pm, parking permits are required to park in lots in proximity to our performance venues. These permits cost $2 and can be obtained at the Raye H. Conrad Welcome Center at the corner of New Campus and Commencement Drives. After 6:30 pm on weekdays, and throughout the weekend, parking is free and unregulated. At Tower Fine Arts Center: Lot G is adjacent to the Tower building. There is metered parking east of Tower. At Hartwell Dance Theater and Rose L. Strasser Studio: Lots M and N allow for easy access to Hartwell Hall. Disabled parking is available at the front doors of Tower Fine Arts Center and Lot M, west of Hartwell Hall.
