Fifty-five percent of our 2008-2009 incoming freshmen were academically in the top 25 percent of their high school class, which is nearly a 30 percent increase from five years ago.

Dear Alumni and Friends: I always enjoy this avenue to reach out to our devoted alumni and many friends of the College. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the past year’s successes while also sharing the College’s plans for the future. While there were plenty of reasons to celebrate during 2008, the year ahead promises to be filled with yet more student success. In May, more than 580 graduate and approximately 1,500 undergraduate students, and their families, braved inclement weather to celebrate the College’s commencement ceremony. Commencement Speaker John R. Ryan, CEO of the Center for Creative Leadership and former Chancellor of the State University of New York and retired Navy Vice Admiral, encouraged graduates — in one of our two ceremonies that day — to follow the outstanding attributes common and crucial to successful leaders. “Be authentic. Do your job and live your life without compromising your values or beliefs. Authenticity can help set you apart,” were his words of wisdom. I also had the privilege of presenting Admiral Ryan with an honorary degree on behalf of all of SUNY. The academic prowess of our students continues to shine. Fifty-five percent of our 2008-2009 incoming freshmen were academically in the top 25 percent of their high school class, which is nearly a 30 percent increase from five years ago. Additionally, this year’s freshman class includes more than 30 students who ranked either first or second in their high school class. And, for the third consecutive year, The College at Brockport has been ranked in the top half of all colleges and

universities in our category and region surveyed by U.S. News & World Report. Also in 2008 we introduced The College at Brockport shield as the school’s new logo. The date on the shield — 1835 — references the year the Brockport Collegiate Institute first opened its doors. The torch in the center is borrowed from the Prometheus statue which, as many of you know, stands vigil over the Allen Administration Building. In Greek mythology, Prometheus was the patron of human civilization and is credited with bringing the flame of knowledge to humankind — a very appropriate and moving connection to higher education. I would be remiss if I didn’t temper my enthusiasm somewhat with the very real challenges all State University of New York campuses are facing with the multiple budget cuts ordered by Governor David Paterson. I was very forthright in this responsibility in my annual Convocation Address to our faculty and staff back in August. The College at Brockport is better positioned than many, due in large part to a philosophy of fiscal prudence and transparent, inclusive budget processes enacted over many years. These will help us weather the budget storm — a widespread storm that looms not only over SUNY and the State of New York, but also our nation and internationally. That being said, I truly believe that all interested parties must see institutions of higher education as a wise investment in New York’s future as well as powerful economic drivers for the state. While the New York State budget will likely be top of mind for the foreseeable future, we have much to look forward to in the next year. This year, 2009, will be the 30th anniversary of one of the College’s true legacies: the hosting

of the International Special Olympics; we anticipate commemorating that historic event in several special ways. We also plan on breaking ground for the 150,000-square-foot Special Events Recreation Center (SERC) during 2009, with a forecasted completion in 2011. Another planned capital project is for the full renovation of Thompson Residence Hall that will begin in early 2009 and should be completed in 2010. Soon thereafter, we’ll focus on a much needed new academic building. A class of students is even actively helping us to gather ideas. Ironically, even in the current dismal economic climate, funds are still forthcoming from the state for bonded construction to stimulate the economy. I wish you could share with me the excitement I see each and every day on the Brockport campus. I’ll leave you with good thoughts for a healthy and happy 2009, and I remain committed to continuing to do all I can to make The College at Brockport an institution of which you can be forever proud. To the Editor Greetings Brockport, We met at the end of freshman year at Daniel’s fraternity formal at Hickory Ridge. And for the next four years we were practically inseparable. So as you can see, Brockport has been and always will be a big part of my life. On July 12, 2008, we tied the knot at Hickory Ridge where we first met. I just want to wish Brockport much success in the future. Thanks for helping me find my soul mate!

I have to admit that I always glance at the alumni e-mails but never really read them. So, it’s not a surprise that when my recent issue of Kaleidoscope came in the mail it ended up in my quoteunquote “junk pile.” However, being the Fourth of July and enjoying a day off from work, I decided to read it. Instantly upon flipping through the pages I felt like I was back at Brockport. I remember walking to Hartwell Hall for dance classes and eating at Brockway with my sorority sisters (ASA). But most importantly I remember meeting my fiancé, Daniel “Deylah” Aviles ’02. As I got to the section in the Kaleidoscope that lists marriages, I too wanted to be included in the next issue.

Brockport Athletes Call “Locker Room Meeting” By Bob Rondina ’63 Seven former Golden Eagle athletes had their own reunion 45 years after their time at The College at Brockport. Representing baseball, basketball, and football from the 1960s era, these mostly retired teachers and coaches assembled at one of Brockport’s most “illustrious” establishments to recall their storied pasts. Paul Buntich ’65 reconvened his teammates on a warm, sunny Saturday in September at the historic Higgins’ Recreation Center in downtown Brockport. Jim Dugan ’65 From left: Bob Rondina, Paul Buntich, Gary Skoog, Jim Dugan, Ron Rucker, Bill Nelson and Joe Piscopo traversed the US, coming from his home in California. Dugan was a standout baseball, basketball, football, and hockey player. Ron Rucker ’66 participated in baseball and football before becoming a successful teacher and coach at East Rochester. Bob Rondina ’63 played basketball and captained the 1963 baseball squad that completed a 16-2 season. Joe Piscopo ’70 and Gary Skoog ’68 both anchored the line on the gridiron during their tenure at Brockport. Buntich, who was a three-year starter, teamed with Bill Nelson ’65 as mainstays on the hardwood. Nelson has been a highly successful basketball coach at RIT, Nazareth and Johns Hopkins University, where he is nearing 500 career victories. At the team meeting that day, it was surprising how talk of the athletes’ Golden Eagle accomplishments became more legendary as the day wore on into early evening. However, all were in complete agreement that their years at The College at Brockport were among the best of their lives. The professors, coaches and friends they met and worked with prepared them well for their professional careers and will never be forgotten. They talked about how lucky they have been to stay healthy, have wonderful families, and recall the memories of a happy and simpler time in that small paradise that was home for four years. “We are all proud to be Golden Eagles forever. Thank you, Brockport!!”

Bob and Nancy (Beatty) Marino, both of the class of 1969, have donated $102,250 to the College to support the Robert J. and Nancy B. Marino Business Leadership Scholarship. The scholarship is to be used for the purpose of providing undergraduate student awards in the Department of Business Administration and Economics at The College at Brockport. The couple originally met on the Brockport campus when Bob was serving as an orientation tour guide for incoming students, one of which was Nancy. She had graduated from Nassau Community College and was transferring to Brockport. This chance meeting turned into a partnership that would last a lifetime. From Brockport, Bob went on to a highly successful career in the telecommunications industry, but remembered the lessons he learned as a student. “Brockport helped me learn the importance of not only winning, but winning fairly,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what career you’re in, take the high road and do your personal best. Honoring Cassidy By Darby Knox As a student at The College at Brockport, Cassidy Ball made an indelible impression on all who knew him. Smart, funny, tenacious, and deeply ethical, Cassidy was a bright and shining light. He was a student in the Honors Program, a Presidential Scholar and the recipient of many awards and scholarships. His academic performance consistently earned him a place on the Dean’s List. Cassidy distinguished himself with his compassion and leadership — on and off campus. He served as a representative in Brockport Student Government and as treasurer and president of the Accounting Society. He was the events director of the Political Science Club, a peer mentor for new students, and served on the Department of Business Administration and Economics Council of Students. He also was a member of the men’s cross country team. Cassidy worked selflessly on behalf of others, participating in the “Relay for Life” and “Race for the Cure” to raise money for the American Cancer Society, and volunteering for food drives, fundraisers for the Salvation Army, and holiday appeals to raise money for underprivileged children. Brockport Web Site Sports New Look By Virginia Bacheler, Chair, Web Advisory Committee We knew what we wanted: an easily navigable Web site for current students and faculty as well as an interesting first “window” on Brockport for prospective students. Not a simple task. And so the Web Advisory Committee looked at dozens of other college Web sites. What were the elements that appealed to the user? How much photographic content was attractive; how much was distracting? Yes, we wanted some animation on our homepage but not so much as to look like a gimmicky advertisement. Color, but not too garish a color. And a curve to the design to get the Brockport page away from looking rectilinear and boxy. Throughout spring and summer 2008, the Web Advisory Committee met (or had conference calls) with our design team at Cognitive Marketing to bring the new look into focus. The homepage should reflect the new brand message: That Brockport was about the successful students who blossom here. And the College’s promise: To reveal to each student, each day, his or her capacity for intellectual, physical and creative accomplishment. We had many stories to tell — not just in the headline stories at the top of the homepage but in the photo opportunities and miniprofiles of students, faculty, and staff throughout the site. We wanted to know, could prospective students find their way to what they were looking for with a minimum number of clicks. Was the language used on the Web

site inviting, so that prospective students stayed with us? We knew from research that we would have about 30 seconds to “make our case” to prospective students before they might decide to move on. The designs from Cognitive Marketing were unveiled last spring. The committee developed nicknames for some of them: the “chalkboard” and “the wine glass.” The designs went out to a broader audience, including a sampling of students who overwhelmingly chose the design we now have—it looked new, inviting, wasn’t boxy and gave prospective students faces with which they could identify. We learned that designing a Web site is not a linear process. Our Web presence is a living organism, constantly changing and continually being updated. The site includes some of the latest technological innovations, including RightNow® Technology, which allows students to ask questions, and receive immediate answers. Plus, with each entry, the technology updates its database of answers, making them ready for the next time the same question is asked. The technology is disguised as the “Ask Ellsworth” button at the bottom of the homepage. As we look ahead, we hope to develop some blog elements so prospective students can interact with faculty and current students. There also are more and more stories to tell that reflect more fully the Brockport experience. We continue to work on our “window” to the world so that when visitors stop by, they get a clear picture of who we are and what we’re all about.

Giving Birth to Enduring Traditions By Kaleigh Osborne ’09

Ever wonder how The College at Brockport’s athletic teams came to be known as the Golden Eagles, or how the green and gold colors the College displays became synonymous with the school’s spirit? We asked Mary Jo Gigliotti, associate librarian, to do a little digging in her archives for the answer to these questions. Here is what she found. “We don’t know exactly when the colors were first set. According to (the late Professor Emeritus in the Department of History) W. Wayne Dedman’s book, Without Tradition a School Lacks a Soul, many of the traditions that were to characterize the institution for many years were developed late in the 19th century or in the Normal School years of the 20th century. Among these was the adoption of official school colors. Just exactly when the school colors were adopted is not clear from the record, but by the time of the initiation of Color Day in 1902 the green and gold were firmly established.” Color Day was developed by a committee of students working with Principal Charles MacFarlane as part of the preparation for a new school event. Color Day debuted in the spring of 1902, and it’s been said the colors may have come from the green grass and golden dandelions of spring, but it’s not known for certain if this was the case. “But this was suggested at a later time as reported in an article in the

school’s newspaper, The Stylus, on May 11, 1932. Certainly the fact that Color Day was traditionally held in May would confirm the appropriateness of the reference,” said Gigliotti. According to Gigliotti’s colleague, Charlie (Charles) Cowling, associate librarian, the Color Day event became quite popular at the school and within the local community, and continued until the 1930s when Principal Hartwell ended the tradition because “it was getting too rowdy.” By then, Color Day had become intertwined with the fraternities and sororities of the time, which Hartwell also ended. Another Stylus article dated May 14, 1937, says the custom for Color Day was for all members of the College to wear their colors or “satin ribbons 8" long.” Ellsworth the “Golden Eagle” was the brain child of Stylus reporter and cartoonist Bob Bloxsom ’58. He created Ellsworth in 1956 and the May 4, 1956 Stylus noted that, “The above photograph shows cartoonist Bob Bloxsom’s ‘Ellsworth the Eagle,’ the new mascot of Brockport State Teachers College. “He shall be drawn in many different moods as he will lead all our teams and student body in most anything that is happening on campus.” The name Ellsworth is the middle name of former popular coach Bob Boozer. A coincidence?

Where are They Now? Alumni often ask us about College friends with whom they’ve lost touch over the years, and also want to know where their favorite former faculty and members of the College administration are today. We decided to launch the series, Where are They Now?, which debuts in this issue of Kaleidoscope.This issue features James Kunstler ’71, Andrew Virgilio ’49, and Raymond Duncan. What is your favorite memory of Brockport? My favorite memory is being part of the community and the joy of living in a small town on Main Street America after growing up in New York City.

James Kunstler ’71 is perhaps best known for his books about suburban sprawl and the loss of a sense of community. In The Geography of Nowhere (1993), Kunstler remembers his days at Brockport and living in small a Victorian-era village. “Brockport was scaled to people, not cars. It had the variety that comes from a mixed-use community. We loved rubbing elbows on the streets, meeting friends as we walked or biked to class. We loved the peace and quiet of a small town at night.” He has taken his stop-thesprawl message to forums coast to coast, advocating a return to building a sense of community through thoughtful planning and development. He previously worked as a reporter and feature write for a number of newspapers, and as a staff writer for Rolling Stone magazine. Kunstler is a 1996 Brockport Alumni Service Award recipient.

What individual or experience at Brockport made the greatest impact or impression on you — an impression that has lasted a lifetime? Dr. David Hamilton, a professor in the Department of Theatre, was an important mentor to me at Brockport. How do you spend your days now? I spend my time writing. I currently have 15 books in print. I also tell people that I am leading a happy life of selfemployment. What is your all-time favorite book? The Bushwhacked Piano, written by Thomas McGuane, is a favorite of mine. What would you do differently, if you had the opportunity to do it all over again? If there was any one thing I could change, it would be that I would have kept my cool as a young man in the earlier part of my career.

That would be a classroom setting where we are discussing a complex issue with great vitality and excitement. The teaching part of my career has been the best — when a student would light up with an insight and articulate the insight, leading to a discussion that brought other students into the conversation. These were moments of enlightenment for me right along with the students.

Andrew (Andy) Virgilio ’49, educational administration professor emeritus, taught at Brockport from 1961 until 1987. Although Virgilio now lives in Florida the year round, he stays connected with the Collage by supporting student scholarship, and has fond memories of his years at Brockport. What is your favorite memory of Brockport? My favorite memory of Brockport would have to be the camaraderie I found at the College. Being a smaller college, the campus environment was one in which the faculty and students could build close relationships. What individual or experience at Brockport made the greatest impact or impression on you — an impression that has lasted a lifetime? Dr. Ray Conrad made the biggest impact on me. I did not know what I wanted to do when I first arrived at Brockport, but after listening to him as he taught a class that I was taking, I realized that teaching is what I truly wanted to do. How do you spend your days now? I live in Florida now, so I spend a lot of my time at the gym, volunteering at a local

I think about a poem by Robert Frost entitled “The Road not Taken,” which discusses the point in life where you come to a fork in the road and have to decide which path you will take. I chose the path that I continue on to this day, assuming it was the right way to go, and I can honestly say that there is nothing about it I would change.

What individual or experience at Brockport made the greatest impact or impression on you — an impression that has lasted a lifetime? What President Paul Yu did here was terrific, but if I go back to when I came here in 1968, those years of transforming the College’s terrain between 1968 and 1970 were wonderful. Brockport brought on 180 new faculty in just two years. It was a renaissance time at Brockport. How do you spend your days now? I am working on my second novel, The Quiet War. I’m still very excited about my first novel, Patriot Trap. They are both active adventures dealing with international events. I am also working on updating the fourth edition of a text book, World Politics in the 21st Century, with my co-authors Robert Switky, an educator in California, and Barbara Jancar-Webster, a College at Brockport distinguished research professor. I also am enjoying world travel. We just returned from a month in Germany and the former

Raymond Duncan, political science and international relations distinguished teaching professor emeritus, was a member of The College at Brockport faculty from 1968 to 2002. He continues to live in the Village of Brockport and is an active member of the community. A world traveler, Duncan recently returned home from Eastern Europe. What is your favorite memory of Brockport?

Yugoslavia, where we spent the last three days in Sarajevo with one of Brockport’s finest graduates, Emil Okanopic ’01. One of my very best students ever, he received his high school education during the Yugoslavian Civil War, and classes were held underground. What is your all-time favorite book? That would be the Patrick O’Brien series about the British Navy. O’Brien captures the essence of the period in the description of the characters and the flavor of the setting. What would you do differently, if you had the opportunity to do it all over again? In terms of my profession — nothing. In 1956, a friend and I quit the University of California between our sophomore and junior years, and we hitchhiked to New York City where we caught an old Greek cargo ship. We had about $300 each in our pockets. We hitchhiked through Europe. East Berlin was tricky to get into, but we managed to enter the country. As I stood on the steps of the Pergamum Museum, the sun was setting and I had this epiphany. It was as if the gods jumped into my head and said, “You should get a degree in politics because you love this.” So, I hitched a ride back to Quebec, went back to school, and my grades, which had been so-so, went up and I went on to get my PhD in international relations. I spent my life teaching politics and I never turned back.

New Alfred State President is Brockport Alumnus President John R. Halstead and Vice President of Advancement Roxanne Johnston were among the dignitaries attending the October 16 inauguration of College at Brockport alumnus John M. Anderson ’74 as the 11th president of Alfred State College of Technology. A product of SUNY, John M. Anderson ’74, left, with President John R. Halstead Anderson earned his associate’s degree from Westchester Community College before completing his bachelor of arts in physics from The College at Brockport. He then went on to complete a master of arts in physics from SUNY Geneseo and a PhD in education from Cornell University.

Prior to assuming the presidency at Alfred State in March 2008, Anderson was, since 2004, executive vice president and provost at Hartwick College in Oneonta, where he had also served as interim vice president for student life. Anderson also had served as vice president of academic affairs at SUNY Institute of Technology (2003-04) and provost and vice president for academic affairs at Alfred State College (19992003). During the prior eight years, Anderson held several administrative positions at Alfred State, including vice president for institutional advancement, dean of student development, and vice president for student services. Between 1975 and 1991, Anderson held several teaching and academic posts at Alfred State College, The College at Brockport, SUNY Geneseo, and two area high schools. He also has worked as a consultant for several entities, including the Middle States Association, New York State Department of Education, and the SUNY Delegation to Turkey.

Brockport Alumna Named President of Rhode Island College In November, The College at Brockport alumna Nancy (Munzert) Carriuolo ’70/’73 took the oath as the ninth president of Rhode Island College, (RIC) the oldest public institution of higher education in that state. Carriuolo was selected for the presidency in May by the Board of Governors for Higher Education and took office on July 1. Carriuolo earned her bachelor of arts in English and master’s of science in elementary education at Brockport, and a PhD in philosophy from SUNY Buffalo in 1979. Carriuolo’s inauguration was in honor of her new presidency, as well as being an opportunity to celebrate the long history of the college. It began with an updated version of a medieval academic procession, which escorted the new president from her campus home, winding through the campus grounds to pick up deans, faculty, staff members, students and alumni at each of the college’s five schools along the way.

Leading the procession was Carriuolo’s family, riding in a 1929 Mercedes Benz Gazelle reproduction belonging to her husband, Ralf. Jazz musicians accompanied the procession en route to Roberts Hall Auditorium where the formal investiture ceremony took place. The deans of the college’s five schools presented to the new president gifts symbolic of their academic missions. RIC’s Student Community Government sponsored an inaugural gala. Mindful of the fiscal challenges faced by state agencies, Carriuolo had requested that no college monies be used for any of the inaugural activities, not even outside funds previously raised through the RIC Foundation or Alumni Association. Instead, a fundraising committee is soliciting donations that will not compete with other ongoing college fundraising activities. “I would never tap the college’s limited resources to pay for inaugural expenses. Still, I recognize the importance of celebration, especially in families, and RIC has always prided itself on a family atmosphere,” Carriuolo said. Carriuolo added that the simple yet festive activities she planned for the inauguration gave the people closest to RIC a chance to reminisce about all that the college has meant to the thousands of faculty, staff and alumi who have passed through its gates since its founding in 1854.

Alumni, Emeriti and Faculty Publish Important Works Roy Bubb ’53, education and human development assistant professor emeritus, celebrated the publication of his newest book, Visions from a White Mountain Palette, The Life and Times of Charles A. Hunt. Bubb held an open house and book signing in September at his home in Holley, NY, having returned from his summer home in Silver Lake, NH, just days before. Several friends from the College and community were on hand to celebrate the occasion, view three Hunt original paintings, and sample a homemade blueberry dessert delight, made from handpicked New Hampshire berries. Hunt was a prolific painter and long-time resident of Madison, NH, from where he took inspiration for his art. Proceeds from Bubb’s book will go to support the town’s Historical Society Museum. Joe Carmichiel ’90, an education consultant and freelance journalist, has taught high school English in some of America’s most challenging schools. He has a wealth of firsthand experience with teens, gangs and violent adolescents. In his newly released book, Permanent Adolescence, Why Boys Don’t Grow Up, he analyzes the “unfortunate decisions and deliberate oversights society has made over the years.” Based on Carl Jung’s theory of “horizontal and vertical mindedness,” Carmichiel examines the major reasons causing permanent adolescence — the disappearance of coming-of-age rituals, the effect of television on children’s brain development, the lack of male role models, the normalization of violence, and the inadequate teaching methods in schools. Carmichiel’s book, published by New Horizon Press, is available in book stores. Jim May ’68 and his wife Carol, recently bicycled a 2,000mile journey, which followed the Underground Railroad, from Mobile, AL, to Owen Sound, Canada. Their (as yet untitled) book about the adventure will be out in the spring. In the meantime, they are doing presentations about their adventure

throughout the Rochester area. In 2004, the couple also biked from San Francisco, CA, to their home in Williamson, NY, a trip of more than 3,400 miles. Their travels are detailed in their book, Bicycle Odyssey: A Pilgrimage to Discover the Real America, published by Lulu Press. Harold W. Nash recently published his memoirs, Three Good Men, in which he discusses his encounters with the three most important men in his life — Harold L. Nash, his father; Martin H. Rogers, The College at Brockport mentor, teacher and director of the College’s Adirondack retreat, Camp Totem, (1945 - 1977); and John J. Readling ’49, Nash’s colleague at SUNY Oswego. Schneider, EdD, associate professor in the Department of Physical Education and Sport, has published his second book, Ethics of Sport and Athletics: Theory, Issues, and Practice. The first round of copies was released in October with publication anticipated for 2009 by the publishing house of Lippincott, Williams, and Wilkins. Schneider has taught undergraduate sport management and coaching courses as well as graduate athletic administration courses at Brockport for 12 years. In March, he published the textbook Basketball for all Levels (American Press). He has published numerous peer-reviewed, scholarly articles and has taken part in more than 60 scholarly presentations. His most recent presentation, The Virtuous Sport Manager, took place in November at the Forensic Sciences and Sport Conference in Ankara, Turkey. Schneider states, “One of my primary goals in writing Ethics of Sport and Athletics was to include moral theory in a way that could be applied to contemporary problems often faced by sport managers, players, fans, etc. in the real world of sport. “I wanted an undergraduate student to be able to look forward to the next page when reading it. I hope students become so immersed in what they’re reading that they lose track of time.”

Thomas DeMaio ’50 and his wife, Joan, celebrated their 80th birthdays with a family reunion at Pawleys Island, SC. The reunion included 18 family members from New York, St. Louis, Chicago, and Hong Kong. Alex C. Johnson ’54 started the Substitute Principal Program in 1990 after retiring from the Rochester City School District some years ago as a school principal. Now fully retired, he is active as vice commander of the American Legion Post 134 in Irondequoit, NY, and active with the Retired Teacher Organization (RTO). Rita G. Devine ’55 continues to be active in community service programs, including St. Mary’s Pastoral Council and as a Eucharistic minister in Granville, NY. Betty A. Bartkowiak ’57 has been retired for 23 years and is still playing competitive tennis in a Space Coast League and enjoys golf. Ray Scharf ‘61 professor emeritus and former coach of swimming at East Carolina University, won five gold medals in the North Carolina Senior Games State Championships, and qualified for the National Senior Games to be held at Stanford University in San Francisco in August 2009. Bruce MacGregor ’62 retired from the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), Washington, DC. Currently, he is cutting lots of grass on a large lot near Fredericksburg, VA, and sings in the choir at the local Methodist church. Richard N. Robert S. Gold ’69 delivered the 2008 Charles N. Poskanzer Lecture, Emerging Trends on the Future of Technology in Public Health, in September. A nationally recognized expert in the application of advanced communications technologies to health education, Gold is a professor in the Department of Public and Community Health and co-director of the Public Health Informatics Research Laboratory at the University of Maryland at College Park. Michael J. Singleton ’70 is currently the interim superintendent at Southern Berkshire Schools in Massachusetts. After 20 years in the New York state public school system, Singleton retired in 2003. From 2003 to June 2008, he worked as the special education director in the Williamstown (MA) Public School system. David Shampine ’71 has been employed with the Watertown Daily Times for 37 years. He is a crime reporter and writes a weekly column, “Times Gone By.” David Keefe ’72 has been named the new part-time director of the Western Ontario Local Community Development Corporation. Keefe will oversee the agency’s micro-enterprise loan program for current and new businesses in the towns of Bristol and West Bloomfield and the Village of Bloomfield, which funds the agency. He also will speak on behalf of local business and help with regulatory issues. Russ Martin ’72 had his work featured in Silvershotz International Journal of Fine Art Photography, published in Australia and the UK. The 10-page article featured a story about Martin along with 16 of his flowing water images. Tillotson, who previously was on the Department of Dance and Arts for Children faculty at The College at Brockport, was most recently the director of education for the Arts in Education Institute at the Stanley Center for the Arts in Utica. Matthew Andrews ’00 has been named women’s soccer coach at Medaille College in Buffalo. David Insalaco ’00 has been named assistant ice hockey coach at Rochester Institute of Technology. Kevin McLeary ’00 is an analyst for the federal government and works in Washington, DC. He and his wife had their second child, Caden, in April. Lori Dennison ’01 received her master’s of nursing education and leadership from Regis University in Denver, CO, in December 2006. She is currently teaching nursing and working as a registered nurse in the Syracuse area. Aaron Skinner ’01 recently changed careers from law to acting and will be co-starring in the series finale of The

Shield. He also will be co-starring in a Hallmark film, The Glass Seagull. Jennifer (Hudack) Staskiewicz ’01 received her master’s degree and CAS in school psychology from Robert’s Wesleyan College. Marjorie Higley Brown, the wife of former President Albert W. Brown, died September 24, 2008, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was 84. Along with others, she started the movement in Brockport for Historical Preservation. In addition to being a caring mother of five, she also made many contributions to The College at Brockport and the Village of Brockport. While living in Chautauqua County, she was a member of Fort Nightly, Great Decisions, American Legion Auxiliary Post 1286 of Lakewood, Altar Guild and other committees at St. Luke’s Church, DAR, Fenton Historical Society, Roger Tory Peterson Institute, the Thursday Rug Hooking Group of Bemus Point, and Audubon Society. She was a member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration, taught early American art forms and wrote several articles on crafts that were published by national magazines. When The College at Brockport rolled out the E.E. Cummings restoration project, there were 74 pieces of art which had not seen the light of day for more than two decades. After the inaugural gala in October 2007, more than half the collection was adopted for restoration. Yet there are still pieces to be restored. To help raise funds to do so, we are thrilled to welcome Anthony Zerbe in his tour-de-force performance, It’s All Done With Mirrors, in which he recounts some of Cummings’ poetry and shines a light on the artist behind the poet.

A Letter from the President of the Brockport Alumni Association On behalf of The College at Brockport, I would like to thank you, among the thousands of thoughtful donors, for your gift to The Fund for Brockport during the past fiscal year. Through your generous support, the 2007– 08 academic year witnessed a record-setting Annual Giving Campaign. Your philanthropy supports the College’s programs and academic initiatives, student scholarships, campus improvements and athletics. Last year’s Annual Fund total topped more than $2 million, a new benchmark for annual giving at Brockport. These gifts were received from alumni, faculty, staff, emeriti, corporations, charitable foundations, and organizations. Gifts from Brockport’s loyal alumni account for the largest portion of The Fund for Brockport. The College’s faculty and staff, including emeriti, joined with alumni in financial support of the institution’s numberone priority—student success.

Reconnecting with alumni, emeriti, and friends was a hallmark of the past year’s activities. Groups gathered in many states to become reacquainted with the College and reconnect with friends from Brockport. Events such as First Fridays at historic Alumni House and the annual Benefactors Brunch as well as Homecoming Weekend provided yet more opportunities to reconnect, reminisce, and remember. If you weren’t able to make it back to campus this past year, I hope you’ll find time in your busy life to make a visit soon. A Letter from the Chair of the Brockport Foundation It is indeed a privilege to once again express my heartfelt gratitude to you on behalf of The College at Brockport Annual Fund. Your generosity has made this another groundbreaking year in philanthropy for the College. We raised nearly $2.1 million in private support for scholarships, program enhancements, academic enrichment, and much more, helping the College keep its promise to provide a superior education and an extraordinary value. This year, even more than in years past, private support is essential. Economic pressures may place a college education out of reach for some of our students, forcing them to put their futures on hold. And, as the College tightens its fiscal belt and focuses on its core mission, special events and program enhancements that provide the “value added” education so special to Brockport may have to be moved down the list of priorities.

John Adams Unbound Exhibit at Brockport College is One of 20 Colleges to Host National Exhibit

By Kaleigh Osborne ’09 The College at Brockport has been selected as one of just 20 colleges across the nation to participate in the John Adams Unbound tour, a collection of writings by John Adams, the nation’s second president. The tour is being launched by the Boston Public Library and the American Library Association Public Programs Office, and will be traveling throughout the country, beginning in January 2009 and continuing through June 2012. The priceless collection of 3,500 books, previously held in one of our founding father’s personal libraries, has been a part of an extensive exhibition in the Boston Public Library since 1894. These books hold Adam’s handwritten commentary, signatures, purchase amounts, inscriptions, and drawings, as well as newspaper clippings and loose manuscripts.

Photo-reproduced annotated volumes of Adam’s books will allow viewers to witness his struggles as he faced intellectual and political quandaries from boyhood all the way up to and including his presidency. The 1,000square-foot exhibit will be available to visitors in the College’s Drake Memorial Library for a six-week period, beginning October 12, 2011. Brockport was chosen as one of the 20 libraries to receive the exhibit due to the programming ideas that Project Director and Assistant Librarian David Gordinier submitted to the National Endowment for the Humanities. Gordinier stated, “It is an honor to have been chosen as one of only 20 libraries nationwide. This will hopefully bring a sense of history to life, both for our students and faculty as well as for the general Brockport and Rochester communities. Charitable IRA Legislation is Passed The charitable IRA legislation is back for a repeat performance — don’t miss this second-chance opportunity to make tax-free gifts from your IRA. When the economic stimulus package was approved last fall, it included an extension of the IRA Charitable Rollover. Retroactive to the beginning of this year, this important giving option affords individuals who meet the qualifications to make tax-free gifts to charitable organizations for both the 2008 and 2009 tax years. This is good news for individuals aged 70½ or older with individual retirement accounts. Thanks to the extended charitable IRA legislation, you can once again make outright gifts using IRA funds without tax complications. If you are required to receive minimum distributions from your IRA and you do not need the money for personal use, consider using those funds as a charitable gift. While you cannot claim a charitable deduction for the IRA gifts, you will not pay income tax on the amount.

You may contribute funds this way if: • You are 70½ or older • Your IRA gifts total $100,000 or less each year in 2008 and 2009 • You transfer funds directly from an IRA • You transfer the gifts outright to one or more public charities (This excludes gifts made to charitable trusts, donor advised funds, and supporting organizations.).

The Benefits: • In most cases, the transfer counts toward your minimum required distributions. • The gift generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so even those who do not itemize their tax returns receive the benefit. • You may transfer up to $100,000 directly from your IRA in 2008 and 2009. • The distributions may be in addition to or fulfill any charitable giving you have already planned.

Vickie Mike ’76, a Horseheads High School Spanish teacher, has been named the 2009 New York State Teacher of the Year. New York State Commissioner of Education Richard Mills announced the award at the September Board of Regents meeting. Mike, a Horseheads graduate, has been teaching at Horseheads High School for 28 years, and has been a teacher for more than 30 years. She received a bachelor’s degree from The College at Brockport in 1976, a master’s degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1983, and a doctorate in education from Binghamton University in 2000. As an undergraduate and graduate student, she studied abroad at the Universities of Seville, Salamanca, and Madrid, Spain, as well as at the University of Besançon in France. She is now the state representative for the National Teacher of the Year Award, and will be honored at events throughout the state. This year, she will join representatives from the other states and territories at the White House, when President Barack Obama will announce the National Teacher of the Year.

Amy Bielunis ’05 is a star! Bielunis is one of 51 teachers to receive the 2008 American Star of Teaching Award. A physical education teacher at Mount Lebanon Elementary School in West Lebanon, NH, Bielunis accepted the title for the state of New Hampshire, having been selected from more than 5,000 nominees nationwide. The 51 award-winning teachers are from all 50 states and Washington, DC. Bielunis’ energy, optimism and passion for teaching are the qualities for which her students and colleagues nominated her. She inspires her students to reach for their best while engaging in different sports and movement activities. A role model, Bielunis teaches by her own example how to apply determination and dedication to a cause, and succeed at achieving important goals. “The College at Brockport is the reason I am the educator I am today. The College taught me what it means to be an effective teacher,” said Bielunis.

Eugene Orbaker Honored as Women’s Soccer Celebrates 25th Anniversary Eugene Orbaker celebrates 50 years at Brockport The “Father of Brockport Women’s Soccer,” Eugene Orbaker, associate professor emeritus in the Department of Physical Education and Sport, was honored September 22 during the women’s soccer game against Buffalo State as part of the 25th anniversary celebration of women’s soccer at Brockport. He also is celebrating 50 years as a member of The College at Brockport community. Orbaker coached the Brockport women’s soccer team beginning in 1983 and continuing for three seasons, leading the team to 30 wins and just 12 loses. That first season, he led the Golden Eagles to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship with a 12-1-1 record. “In either the academic venue or the athletic venue, Eugene is a gentleman, a true professional we are proud to have representing Brockport. He has ‘class’ and models that in every situation, whether he’s attending soccer games, working with colleagues in teacher certification meetings, introducing himself to principals of local schools, or working the Brockport exhibit booth at the state conference. His loyalty to both the academic program and the athletic program is legend. As Mike Andriatch (office of development) says, ‘Bleed green and gold,’ Eugene Orbaker does,” said Susan C. Petersen, associate professor and chair in the Department of Physical Education and Sport. In the 25 years of women’s soccer at Brockport, there have been 77 players named to All-SUNYAC squads, 40 players to AllState honors and seven named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Adidas All-Region team for the Northeast Region.

Brockport Athletes Team Up to Serve Community Brockport’s athletic teams aren’t just winners on the field, they’re also winners when it comes to community service. Several teams were busy throughout the fall with service projects that are helping to meet the needs of area families and senior citizens. During the last two weeks of October and the first week of November, Golden Eagles teams worked together to collect more than 70 winter coats to donate to the Brockport Area Clothing Center. On Halloween night, more than 200 athletes collected more than 1,000 pounds of non-perishable food items from the Brockport community and delivered the food to the Brockport Area Food Shelf. Then in early November, teams and student athletes took part in the Fourth Annual Leaf Raking Day as part of the SUNYAC-wide community service project. The teams divided up into work groups to clear the leaves from more than 50 yards of Village of Brockport senior citizens.

Golden Eagles Hall of Fame Inducts Seven The Golden Eagles Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2008 was inducted on October 11 at a dinner ceremony in the New York Room, Cooper Hall. The seven new members bring the total number of Hall of Famers to more than 150 since the first class was inducted in 1985. The 2009 ceremony will mark the 25th anniversary of the Hall of Fame. If you are interested in nominating a former Golden Eagle for this honor, please refer to the nominating procedure on the Brockport Athletics Web site at www.brockport.edu/athletics and click on Hall of Fame. Nominations are accepted all year and the new class will be selected by the Hall of Fame Committee over the summer.

New Coaches are Welcomed to Brockport Athletics The College recently welcomed three new head coaches to the Brockport Golden Eagles coaching staff. Nicole Beauregard will be coaching women’s basketball, Jack Stover III will be heading the swimming and diving team, and Stephanie Walker is new head coach for women’s lacrosse. Stover takes over the swimming and diving program at the College after assisting at the University of Rochester for the past three seasons. He also will act as the aquatics coordinator for the Office of Recreation Services. Beauregard comes to Brockport after coaching at SUNY Delhi for the past three seasons. Walker takes over the head coaching duties for the women’s lacrosse team after serving as assistant coach last season. Beauregard and Walker have additional duties within the Department of Athletics, including home event management and work with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

Seven College at Brockport Students Honored with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence

By Alex Matiash ’10 Seven students at The College at Brockport were honored in Albany with the 2008 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. The seven Brockport students were among 275 students from SUNY schools across the state. President John R. Halstead remarked that “Our primary mission at The College at Brockport will always be student success. Our Chancellor’s Award honorees epitomize the achievement of student success at the highest levels. From academics to athletics, leadership to community service, they are all exemplars that make us very proud.” This year’s student recipients come from nearby towns and around the world, showcasing the College’s global perspective. The 2008 recipients are Alissa Chaney, an accounting major from Horseheads, NY; Bryan Kent, a physical education major from Webster, NY; Robert Maxwell, a mathematics major from Amherst, NY; Babajide Osatuyi, a double major in computer science and computational science from Lokoja, Nigeria; Steven Seedhouse, a chemistry major from Whitby, Ontario, Canada; Subin Sindurakar, a double major in computer science and mathematics from Kathmandu, Nepal; and Jessica Thaine, a biological science major from Kendall, NY. The recipients received a framed certificate and a medallion, which the students wore during the 2008 Commencement Ceremony. The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence was created to recognize students who have demonstrated and been recognized for integrating academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts or career achievement. The average GPA for all 2008 Brockport recipients was a 3.75.

Communication Alumni Celebrate Each Other’s Success Brockport communication alumni, as well as current students and a faculty member, gathered for a photo during the National Association of Broadcasters Radio Show in Austin, TX. The group was on hand in September for the Marconi Awards Dinner, which recognizes outstanding professionals in the field of broadcasting. Dave Kane ’79 was a national finalist for the Marconi Award for Best Medium Market Personality of the Year. Mike Krinik ’96 (not pictured), music representative for Capitol Nashville, also was a national finalist for a Radio & Records Industry Achievement Award for Country Regional Promotion Executive of the Year.

Planned Giving — A Great Way to Give Back Lin Case ’89, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics I came to Brockport in 1987 to accept an entry-level position. I expected that I’d be here for a few years to complete my master’s degree and gain valuable experience, and then move on to another institution. Well, 21 years later, I am still here. Planned giving can be an attractive option for many donors who choose this means as a way to give back to the College. From the very beginning, the College has felt like a family to me. Brockport gave me the opportunity to develop the skills I needed to advance my career, and most importantly, I was able to turn my “dream job” into a reality that has far exceeded my expectations.
