Visitors are registering in their thousands to attend The Emergency Services Show 2012 via the show website – www.emergencyuk.com. Emergency Services Times (EST) contacted a select few and asked them their reasons for registering, what they were most looking forward to seeing and the importance of networking at the event. How would you answer?
Q: What are you most looking forward to seeing at The Emergency Services Show?
A: I’m looking forward to seeing a wide range of exhibitors, together with a wide range of products ‘under one roof’. Being able to see so much, from across a wide section of suppliers is an invaluable time saver. When this is coupled with a quality, convenient venue, it’s likely to be both a productive and enjoyable day. Chief Inspector Henry Parsons Joint Roads Policing Unit Thames Valley Police A: Working as Supply Chain Manager with Grampian Fire and Rescue Service with my main focus on PPE, what am I most looking forward to seeing at the show? In one word ‘Innovation’. There are some clever and inventive people out there, whose ideas could change, enhance, simplify or simply help with cost savings in so many areas of my work. The Emergency Services Show is the platform that enables me the opportunity to meet and talk to those people. The diversity of products on display and the relaxed atmosphere makes it a show not to be missed. Roslyn Freeman MCIPS, Supply Chain Manager Grampian Fire and Rescue Service
Q: What influenced your decision to register for The Emergency Services Show most – the chance to see the latest equipment available to emergency services or to network with like-minded emergency responders?
A: Why turn down an opportunity to visit an expanding Emergency Services Show? Having attended all of the shows held at Stoneleigh I find it useful to catch the latest developments, attend meetings and network with other Brigade Engineers from across the UK. Brian Middleton, Fleet Manager Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service
A: I’ve attended all of the Emergency Services Shows held at Stoneleigh Park. The shows enable me to keep up-to-date with the latest products and services available to emergency responders. Many of these products and services have applications outside of the emergency responder arena and I have returned from every show with ideas to improve our business effectiveness and efficiency and our service to our customers. The show also facilitates networking with suppliers and other responders – this is also an invaluable part of the show for me. I’m looking forward to the 2012 show. John Gibbs, Contingency Planning Manager UK Power Networks

Q: How important is it to discover equipment and services at The Emergency Services Show that will provide efficiency savings for your organisation?
FIRST WORDS | 5
A: For us in Mountain Rescue, its imperative that we get the best value for money, every pound we spend we have to earn. The Emergency Services Show (ESS) showcases what’s available from a huge variety of different suppliers, gives me a chance to talk face to face and encourages good client/supplier relationships, it lets me get 'hands on' with the kit whether that be medical, clothing, ‘crag’ kit, lighting or vehicles, quality and value for money is what I look for and events like the ESS can give me this. Brian Bailey Equipment Officer Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team A: All local authority fire and rescue services are under pressure to reduce costs and to get the best value that they can when purchasing vital equipment. Even with the current spending pressures, we need to ensure that our crews have the best equipment possible to undertake the critical roles that they perform and the show offers fire chiefs and engineers the chance to learn first hand of the innovation and new ideas, which are out there in the sector. The show also allows us the opportunity to see what other services are buying and how they achieved value whilst doing so. Mark Jones Chief Fire Officer Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service A: In the past, police forces have been very good at sourcing and acquiring equipment that quickly becomes obsolete or inefficient. I have seen the inefficiency in purchasing processes over the last 30 years, which has often impacted on policing operations and resulted in non-existent efficiency savings! Interoperability between police regions and forces is key to ensuring that appropriate equipment is sourced. Having the right advice is also vital to understand your customers’ needs, capabilities and implementation issues. Dick Titley, Director Prevention Protocols ltd
Q: How valuable do you think The Emergency Services Show will be to your understanding of the latest equipment available to emergency services?
A: Managing one of the remotest and stand-alone fire services in the world, these shows have become an essential tool to meet suppliers and to see what is new on the market. There are exciting times ahead with oil and possible gas development and all that entails, which will have a profound impact on the fire service’s future requirements and service development, making these shows even more essential. Since last year’s show the Falkland Islands Government has committed funds of over £500,000 investment to the fire service for Photo: Norman Clark new and replacement equipment. Over £300,000 will be spent this year on a new Scania 4x4 fire appliance and replacement of the service’s rescue equipment. Without attending last year’s show I would not have seen the various options available with the vehicles. My attendance also highlighted a potential future problem for us operating in a remote location with the computer technologies now being used and European emissions regulations. Yamaha to launch police motorbike Keep on movin’ John Jordan Limited is exhibiting a range of products at the show that help to keep vehicles moving on snow and ice. AutoSock are reusable textile ‘socks’, sold in pairs, which are pulled over the driving wheels of cars, vans, or HGVs, whenever extra grip is needed. They use specially developed fabrics to maximise the dry friction grip, and they always work, even in wet snow. In summary, AutoSock are: quick and easy to fit and remove, before or after a vehicle gets stuck. No special training is required; reusable and machine washable; quiet in use, with no vibration; they may be used with all electronic systems; approved by TÜV, and as ‘Original Equipment’ by numerous car manufacturers; no bigger than a folded shirt, so easy to store; and are safe for use on tyres that have a ‘no fit’ for metal snowchains.
The Yamaha Motor stand at ESS 2012 is bristling with emergency appliances, which can transport you to an incident scene safely and swiftly. This year there is an exciting UK exclusive as the XJ6 Diversion police specification motorbike is launched – a 600cc motorbike with a responsive inline four-cylinder engine, coupled with a compact chassis and monocross rear suspension system, which provides great performance and manoeuvrability all in one package. Watercraft on show An Olympic hero will also be on the stand – one of the Dorset Police Authority’s VX Patrol ProWC. A fleet of professional specification personal watercraft provided over 900 hours of security support to the Olympic Regatta in Weymouth. Kitted out with Bluetooth comms, GPS navigation
and LED strobe, this craft is the cutting edge of marine response, offering unparalleled levels of inshore security. Flood rescue Marine units will also appreciate the wide range of lightweight two-stroke outboards, which power flood rescue operations throughout the UK. Rescue ready engines with grab handles and propeller guards will feature alongside the 8HP high thrust four-stroke outboard, the ideal motor for large capacity flood rescue sleds and a show premiere for 2012. The Fire Rhino makes a welcome return and exclusive information on the enhanced 2013 FJR1300 will also be available.
Spikes-Spiders is a snow chain system that clips on to a pre-fixed hub plate, making them the quickest and easiest snow chains to fit and remove – 30 seconds for a pair – with no chain behind the tyre. In the expectation that emergency services vehicles may need to fit and remove chains several times during a journey, it’s no surprise that SpikesSpiders are so widely used by the emergency services in Germany and Switzerland.

Further flexibility for fleet managers from Volkswagon Emergency services fleet managers have an increasing challenge to sustain operational vehicle fleet efficiency and deliver this quality of service from leaner resources, both in terms of the number of vehicles available and reduced budgets. Therefore, the importance of dependability, combined with cost effectiveness is paramount to supporting the reliability of service and delivery to ensure maximum operational capability at all times. The Volkswagen Group has been working with authorities for a number of years to support these goals. Since its inclusion on the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) agreement in 2010, the VW Group has instigated a dedicated centralised vehicle supply and aftersales support team. The team manages five Group Brands and vehicle converter arrangements while fully
understanding the products and specifications as detailed in the NPIA framework. The Group believes the diversity of its products offers flexibility to fleet managers in meeting their operational needs without adding unnecessary complexity, as the high level of technical and component commonality ensures cost effective maintenance and what is most important – extremely competitive whole life costs. Additionally, VW Group’s partnership arrangement with vehicle converters to deliver a ‘one-stop-shop’ solution aims to remove further unnecessary complexity. Exceptional customer service The dedicated ordering team aims to deliver exceptional customer service at all stages of the order cycle, from initial order though to delivery, keeping you informed of progress at all stages.
To ensure your operational efficiency and decrease vehicle downtime, the Volkswagen Group also recognises the importance of aftersales support and has included within the team a dedicated Emergency Services Technical Manager. This Technical Manager exclusively supports the internal vehicle ordering executives in making sure your vehicle specification are correct and works with authorities to understand the operational requirements are correctly interpreted and matched against your vehicle needs. Technical support is also provided on training, tooling and equipment needs and in supporting specific vehicle issues in pursuit of keeping your fleet operational. The Volkswagen Group looks forward to continuing to deliver exceptional customer service. www.volkswagen.co.uk

Red Cross to display Olympic vehicle
A trail-blazing communications system will be on display at next month’s Emergency Services Show, fresh from its Olympic mission in Weymouth with the British Red Cross. The Red Cross now has six vehicles across the UK, each equipped with internet, satellite and analogue and digital radio connections enabling real-time updates, tracking and communication with other blue light services. The system also links into the rest of the Red Cross’s fleet of emergency vehicles. The charity also has a TEA2 licence and operates Airwave across England, Wales and Scotland. While stationed in Weymouth to assist with first aid throughout the Games, one of the Red Cross communication vehicles was able to coordinate first aid response on the ground, which saw volunteers treat everything from sprains to cardiac arrests.
British Red Cross National Emergency Communications Manager John Blake said, “Our sophisticated communications system played a key part during our time in Weymouth – ensuring that we were able to get in touch with our teams on the ground, other emergency services in the town and also our staff across the rest of the country. “Because it’s so well kitted out, with its different methods of communication, we should never be out of contact. It’s also got a great commonality factor too – although it is a mobile control unit with cutting-edge technology, we can also revert to the traditional radio system, which has proved cost effective for us as it gives a longer life to some of the older hardware used by us in different areas across the UK.” www.redcross.org.uk

Fundraising for the Fire Fighters Charity
The Fire Services Fund-raising Shop CIC is an independent not-for-profit social enterprise. Its sole function is to create funds for the Fire Fighters Charity and the directors are all volunteer serving and retired members of the emergency services. The shop raises the funds by using novel trading methods – one being the ‘Shop-in-a-box’ scheme, which has been running successfully for 15 years in the fire and rescue service community. Fire stations, without any financial commitment or utilising other resources, can run a small shop at an open day or similar-type event, with full insurance cover and a complete aftersales service. Samples of the contents will be shown at The Emergency Services Show 2012. At larger events,
whether held indoors or outside, the company can run a full scale retail outlet with the facilities to take cash, cheques, debit and credit cards. There is also a website and an online shop where one can make purchases, with the charity profiting from the sale. The range of products on offer, which are all fire and rescue service themed, include Fireman Sam items, other toys, children’s clothing, personal equipment and retirement gifts. The shop is especially proud of a new line of exclusive products, which will be revealed at ESS2012. www.fireserviceshopkeepers.net

North Fire and e2v plan show launch for compact thermal imaging camera North Fire plc has proudly announced its new UK partnership with Essex-based thermal imaging giant e2v, for the company’s Argus range of cameras. As part of the partnership, North Fire and e2v have launched what is being hotly tipped as ‘the new standard thermal imaging camera (TIC) for firefighters’ – the new Argus Mi-TIC, which will be launched at The Emergency Services Show 2012. The Mi-TIC is a personal camera, which any firefighter using breathing apparatus can attach seamlessly to his or her BA strap or tunic and could even be carried in a pocket due to its small size. The new personal camera also boasts a recording facility, which continually records once the camera is switched on so any incidents can be reviewed and assessed by OICs. “This is undoubtedly the future of firefighter thermal imaging,” said Oliver North, Managing Director of North Fire. “For years we’ve monitored the evolution of firefighter thermal imaging cameras with more and more features and complexities being added, whilst maintaining the same large, physical size of the unit. Now we have created a simple to use, robust and extremely convenient unit for the firefighter, which provides a superb resolution of image whilst almost becoming part of the firefighter’s PPE – a move that everyone will appreciate, most importantly the frontline firefighter. And whilst we agree the number of units will almost certainly increase, the price is around half the price of the bigger versions, which maintains a similar budget requirement for FRAs’ thermal imaging camera budgets.” Emergency Services Show launch As well as being launched at The Emergency Services Show 2012, the new thermal imaging camera is also a main exhibition sponsor of the Stoneleigh Park event in November, showcasing the confidence both North Fire and Argus have in the product. “North Fire’s demo calendar has been filling up by the day since the Mi-TIC prototype launch in
August,” said Mike Tarbard, Argus’ Marketing Manager. “The initial reaction to the product has been so positive that we have had no choice but to give the Mi-TIC pride of place in the exhibition’s ‘shop window’. This will ensure all visitors at this
year’s ESS show can see the product, get their hands on it and see for themselves why the Mi-TIC is setting new standards in thermal imaging.” British manufacturing expertise A major factor to Argus’ success within the UK fire and rescue services over the decades has been the fact that it remains the only British owned thermal imaging camera manufacturer in the marketplace. “We’re one of very few genuine British manufacturers,” said Angus Drummond, Vice President of Sales for Argus. “Over the past few years we have seen a number of continental European and American TIC manufacturers try to develop into the UK marketplace, but we truly believe that as our products are innovated from the UK fire and rescue services for the UK fire and rescue services, that we are better situated to deliver what the UK firefighters demand and deserve, and we are proud to ask our customers to continue to ‘buy British’ for their thermal imaging requirements.” North Fire growth through recession During a busy first four years of trading, North Fire has seen a minimum of 100 percent growth year on year, proving that the company is one of

the UK’s fastest growing appliance and equipment suppliers. “Customer service has been key,” said Oliver North. “We have what we think is a worldclass workforce who contribute daily, with their emphasis leaning towards customer satisfaction. This, together with our product portfolio of only the highest quality brands and products, with market leader status in turntable ladders, thermal
imaging cameras and helmets, shows why we are many brigades’ first choice in the supply of our areas of expertise. Our partners Rosenbauer, Metz and Argus are prestige brands and brands that I’m extremely proud to be associated with. I feel that with the power, efficiency and out-and-out quality of our world-renowned partners, we are better situated than any supplier within the marketplace to offer a better quality and more comprehensive product range.” Rosenbauer equipment North Fire started trading in 2008 with what is now officially the world’s largest fire fighting equipment supplier, Rosenbauer International. The excellent range of Rosenbauer equipment includes: the UK market-leading HEROS-xtreme fire helmet; the new award-winning Twister fire boot; the Nautilus pump, which has proven invaluable in dealing with the recent flash flooding issues; the ‘Fanergy’ PPV range; and the Rosenbauer RB Branch series. “Since we set up the equipment distributorship in the UK with North Fire, we have increased our sales drastically,” said Hans Detzlhofer, Vice President, Rosenbauer. “The HEROS-xtreme helmet has been provided to the UK fire and rescue services, which has showcased the absolute quality of our products in conjunction with the efficiency and quality of service offered by North Fire. “We are now expanding our range further into the UK with the fire boots, submersible pumps,

branches and PPV fans, which will be backed up as efficiently as our excellent fire helmet is amongst the 27 UK brigades who have now adopted it.” The new award-winning Rosenbauer Twister boot, which has turned the heads of the UK’s PPE managers, will also be launched into the UK at November’s Emergency Services Show. Metz aerials Metz turntable ladders have recently re-emerged onto the UK fire and rescue scene following the commencement of Metz’s partnership with North Fire, which began in 2009. “The turntable ladder concept has required re-selling to the aerial operators in the UK market,” said Michael Kristeller, Managing Director, Metz. “In mainland Europe we are still supplying 70 percent of TLs in comparison to 30 percent ALPs and it’s been good to see that when our potential UK customers have trialled our ALP, they have made their own conclusion that the ladder is by far the best aerial tool for a modern fire and rescue service’s requirements. We’ve set up at North Fire an excellent service centre with extremely skilled service engineers and as a result we’re now seeing brigades’ tender requirements coming out as turntable ladders. I’m sure we’ll see at least a 50:50 split over the next few years in TLs to ALPs, and at The Emergency Services Show 2012 we will have on show, both a Metz turntable ladder and a Metz ALP.” www.north-fire.com www.argusdirect.com

Comfort and protection in equal measure
PBI is one of the world’s leading inherently flame resistant and thermally stable fibres for outer shell fabric, combining flame resistance and thermal protection with the highest levels of comfort, durability and protection available today. All PBI fabrics, whether from the company’s Gold or Matrix ranges, are lighter and considerably softer than others available in the market, yet they
consistently provide more flame and heat resistance. They offer high standards of durability and will offer the same high level of protection to firefighters throughout the lifetime of their PPE. The PBI outer fabric is made up of 60 percent para-aramid fibre, which means that it is much lighter than other fabrics made from meta/para-aramid blends but even stronger and achieves a higher standard of flame resistance. PBI fabrics will not become brittle, shrink or break open when exposed to flame and high temperatures. This also means that the integrity of the internal layers of the garment is protected and the transfer of any radiant heat is slower, allowing more time for firefighters to escape to safety in a situation such as a flashover. PBI is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina and maintains a manufacturing facility located in Rock Hill, South Carolina and global sales offices in Germany, Spain and the UK.
Keeping cool in an emergency Having the correct clothing is critical to ensuring the personal protection of those serving in the emergency services. Super Absorbent Fibre (SAF™) manufacturer Technical Absorbents (TAL) has been working on a new fabric technology – incorporating SAF™ – that is aimed at keeping the wearers of heavy PPE cool, even when working in the most challenging of environments. KoolSorb™ is patent-pending, and the latest fabric will be unveiled to the industry for the first time at The Emergency Services Show 2012.

Chemical protection and respiratory aids Alpha Solway Ltd is a leading independent manufacturer and supplier of specialist chemical and protective clothing and respiratory products. The company is delighted to be exhibiting again at The Emergency Services Show. Alpha Solway’s PPE solutions include: the alpha S respirator, specifically designed to fit the smaller face and thus achieving better results when fit testing; the highly successful alphamesh and 3000 Series; and the company’s successful Disposable Clothing range, alphachem, which includes alphachem X500, a Gas Tight Suit (Full Encapsulation – Type 1A) suitable for use with SCBA and particularly suitable for emergency response. New items on display this year will also include the company’s range of Techniche thermal products, TECHKEWL™, HYPERKEWL™ and TEHRMAFUR™, for which Alpha Solway has exclusive UK and Ireland Industrial Distribution rights. These high quality garments and accessories are specifically designed to improve both physical
The company also offers a wide variety of respiratory solutions, from the self-contained BA with telemetry capabilities, to the air purifying respirators with CBRN filters, including some escape devices to evacuate safely victims that may have been trapped in fires. Portable gas detection products, whether single gas or multi-gas, enable a safe progression on fire scenes, featuring the Altair 4X with the revolutionary MSA Xcell sensors. More than ever before, MSA is, it says, the most reliable partner to ensure the safety of emergency service personnel in their daily missions to protect people.
KoolSAF™ (the product brand of SAF™ aimed specifically at the coolant apparel market) is the basis for functional and durable fabrics that offer significant advancements in reducing wearer heatstress and fatigue – while providing increased comfort and performance capabilities. KoolSorb™ is one example of this, and initial prototype tabards have already been trialled by Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue. TAL Business Development Manager Dave Hill said, “The challenge of creating coolant undergarments that don’t rely on evaporation to activate the cooling process has been tough. The end results though have been received extremely positive and we are moving towards final fabric production. “KoolSorb™ stimulates the dissipation of heat and moisture through the rapid absorption and containment of body sweat. The material in touch with the skin remains relatively dry and conducts heat away from the hot areas of the body. This results in a cooling effect of up to 6°C for the wearer – directly reducing the risk of heat stress. Garments made using this technology can also be laundered multiple times, which is an important factor. “We are looking to bring to The Emergency Services Show a range of prototype garments to demonstrate what is possible, eg undergarments for the torso and head, that can all be worn under existing outer PPE.”
