CYCLE St Kilda

The City of Port Phillip has planned for investment in St Kilda cycling infrastructure under the Council Plan 2012-2016.... ADDITIONAL BIKE LANES Council will construct an additional 75km of dedicated on-road bicycle lanes within central St Kilda over the next four years, effectively bringing the total distance of dedicated bike lanes within St Kilda to over 200km. Key routes to receive new bicycle lanes include Grey Street, Canterbury Road and Beaconsfield Terrace. In addition, Council has committed to upgrading the surface of existing bicycle lanes - such as Fitzroy Street (south) and Acland Street - as well as removing the two-way Fitzroy Street (north) bicycle lane. Council is also working with VicRoads to remove Fitzroy Street’s bicycle ‘black spot’ intersections at both Loch Street and Park Lane.

COPENHAGEN-STYLE VEHICLE PARKING Key St Kilda arterials will be reconfigured to facilitate Copenhangen style on-street parking. Council - in conjunction with Bicycle Victoria have identified a number of streets in central St Kilda in which this will occur, including Barkly Street, Acland Street and Fitzroy Street (south). Work is to commence early 2015.

MORE BIKESHARE STATIONS Council has secured State Government funding for the implementation of five additional bikeshare stations directly within central St Kilda. Nominated locations include St Kilda Pier, Luna Park and St Kilda Botanical Gardens, which will allow more sustainable connections between people and the places they want to go.

FORESHORE BIKE POD FACILITIES In conjunction with Bicycle Victoria, Council will fund the installation of a bi-cubical bike pod facility at the St Kilda foreshore. This secure facility will be the first 24/7 public change facility on Port Phillip bay dedicated to cyclists, with work to commence late 2014. ADDITIONAL PUBLIC BIKE PARKING An additional 120 public bicycle parking facilities will be installed throughout central St Kilda at key dining, open space and foreshore destinations. A number of these will be secure ‘Parkiteer’ commuter facilities located in close proximity to existing tram routes.
