Focussing primarily on the residential market, the Chelsea showroom accommodates a wealth of wood flooring finishes for this sector. The use of natural and ethically-sourced materials is becoming a key focus for interiors. Designers are increasingly looking to products that embrace a sense of integrity, with sustainability and longevity at the forefront of their considerations when it comes to many project specifications. As the return to handmade goods grows, the spotlight on production is given to the process of making. Natural material such as clay, wood and stone remain key. Untreated wood, sanded or brushed, in light tones are paired with matte materials and solid-colour textiles, to create tactility and softness. Shapes are minimal and uncomplicated, essential for highlighting the functionality and simplicity of this theme. Consumer lifestyles are now centred on low waste, meaningful experiences and eco-conscious choices. Responsible sourcing is becoming a crucial factor for the consumer; we are undertaking fewer and more meaningful purchases, with attention to re-use and repair. Shared and multigenerational housing is set to grow, focusing on creating comfortable homes that are connected with both smart tech and the surrounding environment. 18

IN THE HEART OF CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK Located in the heart of Clerkenwell, Havwoods were again proud to be part of the popular Clerkenwell Design Week. The showroom programme kicked off on the first day of the event with a popular and well received Trend Talk by Gemma Riberti, Lifestyle and Interiors Director at WGSN. In her highly inspiring talk Riberti shared the future forecasts for the end of the second decade of the 21st century. Hosted on the first floor of the J&A cafĂŠ, and streamed into the Havwoods showroom, the event gathered over fifty architects and interior designers hungry to learn about the latest Spring/Summer interior and lifestyle directions for 2019.

CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK

During the Clerkenwell Design Week our showroom guests also had the chance to experience applying different wood finishes to ornaments and planks using Osmo UV Oil. It was a great opportunity for the A&D community to explore diverse techniques and engaging with experts! Jenga towers and checkers, made out of a mix of wood flooring ranges, and the long-awaited raffle draw added a sparkle of playful atmosphere throughout the event. DIMENSION DATA Founded in 1983, Dimension Data is now a USD 8 billion global leader in designing, managing and optimising today’s evolving technology environments. Located in Verde SW1, a state-ofthe-art, office-led redevelopment in the heart of London’s Westminster, Dimension Data’s new premises were designed to cement the company’s presence in the UK market with a strategic hub in the capital. The brief was appointed to Modus, a leading name in office design and commercial planning, who were tasked with creating an open-plan office space that housed the company’s workforce and Executive Committee members in an inspiring and motivating environment. Looking to Havwoods as the supplier of the project’s under-foot surfaces, Modus opted for the Fendi engineered oak planks from the Venture Plank collection to cover the floors throughout. Spanning the office’s meeting room suite, open-plan workspace, breakout area and reception, this high-performance board provided a hardwearing floorcovering designed to withstand the daily footfall that comes with an office environment. The design’s characterful finish provided interest and texture that flowed from room to room, creating a space that was unified in design. This was complemented alongside characterful touches such as Havwoods’ Urania mosaic cladding, which shrouded the wall behind the Dimension Date reception desk, and a series of engaging artwork from South African artist, William Kentridge.

THE BENEFITS OF USING TIMBER

ENSURE THE WOOD YOU USE IS THE RIGHT WOOD Of course, you always want to deal with reputable timber companies who wouldn’t dream of importing illegally logged timber. Many timber suppliers will tell you, often in good faith, that their supplies are from ‘sustainable’ or ‘managed’ sources, or from plantations. But, without an independent certification system, in practice there is often no way of verifying this, or of demonstrating to your clients that you have met their expectations. If you don’t actually know where your timber comes from, you may well be part of the problem. The earth’s atmosphere is not the only casualty of deforestation. 70% of the world’s plants and animals live in forests and are losing their habitats to this destruction. This in turn has an adverse effect on local populations. Trees are also vital to the water cycle. And in halting soil erosion. Aiding local populations to gain by preserving their forests instead of destroying them is the task of international non-profit organisation like the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®). Indeed, the FSC’s mission is to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests, directly or indirectly addressing issues such as illegal logging, deforestation and global warming, and with positive effects on economic development, environmental conservation, poverty alleviation and social and political empowerment. Look for FSC® certified products throughout this brochure.

Other international organisations you will find referenced in this publication are the PEFC™ (Program of the Endorsement of Forest Certification), who concentrate on ensuring that certification is accessible even to small and family owned forests. And the Cradle to Cradle Products innovation institute (administrator for the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Products Programme) which addresses issues from a different angle, educating and empowering manufacturers to become a positive force for society and the environment. Opting to use more wood is undeniably good for both the individual and the environment. Just make sure that the wood you use is the right wood. PRE-ASSEMBLED CHEVRON Decorative patterned wood flooring dates back to the 1 th Century, and it’s definitely enjoying a resurgence in the 21st. But laying a block floor, even one which is pre-finished, is a time-consuming process, so we’ve borrowed an idea from our ready-made Versailles pattern panels and present preassembled, pre-finished chevrons in a plank’. 1 mm thick, 30 mm wide and 1 mm in length, with an oiled finish, they are currently available in four fashion- forward shades and are ideal for both commercial and residential applications. Clearly they are also extremely quick and easy to fit.

For a beautiful wood floor on a budget, choose the Par-ky collection from Havwoods. A uropean marker leader in wood veneer products, a thin slice of wood forms the top layer, providing the unique aesthetics that are the mark of a genuine wood floor. This is then bonded to an ultra-strong HDF core and sealed with no fewer than eight layers of UV-cured lacquer. All designs in the Par-ky range feature a bevelled edge, and are categorised under our Prime timber grading; this means that the board has few, if any knots, and features a minimal amount of sapwood defects and filler. This makes for a smooth and uniform finish in both colour and texture.

Hand Grade is a high quality, high performance, pre-finished engineered board of triple layered construction, with a nominal 6mm wear layer of European oak, WBP birch ply core and uropean oak base. It comes in a choice of two surfaces. One is a 1 mm thick plank with micro-bevelled edges and a smooth sanded surface; the other is a sculptured, rounded edge board, -23mm, with a textured, highly characterful appearance due to natural colour variation, undulations, and even visual scarring like natural water markings and those from the drying process. Both surfaces are finished with Hardwax oil and the entire collection is suitable for use over underfloor heating. Hand Grade planks are FSC certified timber FSC-C00 Certified Bron e, and are now available from stock.

The next generation of solid wood sports flooring, Havsport floors comprise of 22mm thick, 2-strip solid hardwood planks, in a choice of timbers. Providing an exceptionally stable and moisture resistant surface, this innovative range is suitable for both multipurpose sports studios and large-scale event areas. All pre-finished boards are sealed with an anti-scratch lacquer, which vastly improves wear resistance. This lacquer is designed not to require a final coat on site, and for waterbased line marking paint to be applied directly to the floor without need for further sealing afterwards, all of which results in a considerable cost and time saving. A high performance range of batten systems is also available, customised to suit various sub-floor conditions and construction heights. All are fully compliant with BS 1 0 200 .

At Havwoods we are pleased to offer a complete range of T and end sections, ramps and stair nosings specially produced to complement our entire flooring collection; we are also able to offer a flush nosing for our Pureplank and uroplank click products. MA I G TH GRAD Since there is no international standard for timber grades, at Havwoods we have established our own, shown here on oak planks. Please do remember that boards are usually selected by eye and that these parameters are simply a guideline. Overleaf you will find the grading criteria for arelia, which is a little different from our own. In addition, you will find an explanation of some of the terms you will find throughout this book.

Smoking and fuming are essentially the same and refer to a process whereby the hardwood is exposed to ammonia gas for 2 single or double hours. The colouration is surface deep only. Unlike staining, smoking reacts to the chemical composition of the individual plank, so the ultimate shade will vary. This variation is considered an asset, however if you prefer a more even tone we suggest you consider choosing stained rather than smoked wood. Fired products are treated in a vacuum, sometimes for several weeks, and the dark colour runs throughout the lamella providing a genuine visual alternative to tropical hardwoods.

Sapwood is the living part of the tree through which water and sap flow. It is always lighter in colour than the heartwood and certain fuming, smoking and colouring processes emphasise the sapwood since it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t react to such treatments to the same degree. The effect of these treatments on planks containing sapwood is shown above. By definition sapwood contains more moisture, however this is no cause for concern since all Havwoodsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; timber has been carefully dried and its stability is ensured when supplied in an engineered form.

A knot is either the base of a side branch or a dormant bud around which the grain flows. A knot is sometimes replaced by filler and this may be of various colours white, grey, brown and black are shown here.

PATTERNS

TRADITIONAL HERRINGBONE

OVERSIZED HERRINGBONE

HERRINGBONE The herringbone pattern was first associated with wood flooring during Louis IV’s transformation of the Chateau de Versailles. Traditionally their solid wood construction limited the size of the blocks used to create this pattern, but the advent of engineered wood has now led to the availability of blocks in larger si es. Havwoods offer herringbone blocks in a wide variety of finishes, shades and si es, many of which can be laid over underfloor heating. Providing they are of the correct proportions, herringbone blocks may be laid in a single or double herringbone pattern, or more complex ones like basket weave or tumbling dice.

CHEVRON The chevron design is another pattern which has been used in wood flooring for centuries and, like herringbone, is currently enjoying great favour. Like herringbone, a chevron pattern is fairly time-consuming to install so all Havwoods’ chevron blocks are of engineered wood and supplied pre-finished, saving much time and mess on site. We also offer a preassembled chevron panel in four shades which makes laying a chevron patterned floor as simple as laying a plank. Most Havwoods’ chevron blocks are suitable for use over underfloor heating.

WOODBOOK

VERSAILLES This extremely attractive pattern is so closely associated with floors in the Chateau de Versailles that it has taken its name. When replicated from individual blocks the Versailles pattern is very complex to reproduce on site, so all Havwoodsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Versailles patterned flooring is supplied in pre-assembled, pre-finsihed panels. Only HW1122 Versailles atural is suitable for installation over underfloor heating.

UV CURED HARDWAX OIL

This is normally a polyurethane coating that covers the pores of the wood and forms a hard, resilient surface, protecting it from dirt and moisture ingress. A good quality lacquer will protect a wooden floor for anything from 12 months to years, depending upon the amount of foot traffic.

Oil penetrates deep into the wood and brings out the true beauty of both the color and grain, as well as providing protection for the floor. In addition to providing a natural look, oiled floors lend themselves to being spot repaired in the event of surface damage.

Combining the wear advantages of a lacquer with the subtlety of oil, this finish is micro-porous, water-repellent, dirt-, wear-, and stain-resistant against wine, beer, cola, coffee, tea, fruit juices and milk. It will not crack, flake, peel or blister.

SPECIAL DEDICATED DELIVERY SERVICE (SDDS) This service provides a customised delivery option. Deliveries are made in a dedicated vehicle (maximum capacity 1100kg per load), including to awkward and restricted access locations, and unloading assistance is provided. With prior arrangement goods may be unloaded into the property itself and an extra man may be supplied for when there is no other labour or lifting equipment available, or simply to speed up unloading. Deliveries may be timed on a 24 / 7 option, incurring no extra costs for next day, weekends or night-times. Unpalletised collections and deliveries are available at any time and full transit liability is included. Costings based on zonal postcode areas:

If goods are refused (ie not o oaded) please ensure that the documentation recording this also contains your representatives name, signature and date. 6. Please ensure that you obtain a name, signature and date from whomsoever accepts goods for return (eg, the van driver or Havwoods representative). 7. Do not allow any driver to remove goods without documentation from his company instructing him to do so; such documentation may be arranged through Havwoods’ transport department. NB if Havwoods’ permission to remove is not obtained and the goods go missing Havwoods will not accept any responsibility to issue a refund. 8. Please note that, in the case of special or timed deliveries, delivery charges excluded, Havwoods cannot accept responsibility for consequential loss due to late delivery.
