Due the fact I was not at home at the occasion of my birthday, the Brothers of the generalate decided to celebrate it on the 25th of May. The next day, we could accept Brother Eric-Ferdinand for his final profession. With some meetings in Ndera we ended on Monday the 10th our short visit to Rwanda, coming back on the 11th in Belgium. And then I will prepare myself to leave for Indonesia, where we will give the retreat to the Brothers, visit the houses, also our new apostolate in Flores and where we will take also some rest after a full year of activities. I wish the Brothers and associate members who will have some vacation-period a blessed time of rest, meditation and cultural development.

NEWS FROM THE COMMUNITIES u CASA GENERALIZIA • ROME As it is the custom every year, the community hosted the General Superiors of the Sisters of different congregations. They stayed for some days as they attended meetings for the women Superior Generals in Rome. It was a privilege that our community can still grant hospitality, and this reminds us of our origin: “Hospital Brothers of St Vincent de Paul”. And that hospitality remains one of the ways par excellence to express love of the neighbour. The month of May is always dear to us as a community, but also as a Congregation because on 12th May 2013, we celebrated the birthday of Br Willy Schelfhout. We really thank God for the gift of Br Willy in the community, who always gives the best of himself to serve the Brothers, and to keep one of the precious properties of the Congregation, the archives. We pray that God may always be his support. The 13th May, was the birthday of Brother René Stockman, General Superior, who was out of Rome on mission. But it also reminds us of the eve of the beginning of the General Chapter (last year 14th May 2012). Therefore, we commemorated the birthday of Brother General on Saturday 18th of May, together with the Belgian College.
It was so colorful: the Rector of the Belgian College (Monsignor Dirk Smet) organized together with the students of the Belgian and the students Brothers that they might dress in African style. This aspect was so touching that Br General who underlined the internationality of the College but also of the “Casa Generalizia” as richness. He even proposed that the Belgian College should be called: Pontifical Belgian International College! And the day was concluded by a community outing in the evening to a nearby “Gelateria” for a famous: “Gelato” (ice cream). Br General, Br Vicar General and the Brs General Councillors are always on the move for missions! The community remembers them in its prayers. In our community, a solemn Mass presided by Mgr. Dirk (the rector), was celebrated on the 31st to conclude the Marian month!

SAINT AUGUSTINE PROVINCE We spent the whole month of March 2013 in visit in the region of Our Lady of Africa/D.R. Congo with Brother General Superior and the Regional Superior, Brother Jean Marie Mukonkole. It was a moment of knowing our Communities and apostolate
(Kabinda, Kananga, Kinshasa, Lusanga-Kikwit, Mamangu, Nioki and Kinshasa). We thank all the Brothers for welcoming us fraternally. It was also the moment to encourage them, Associate Members and collaborators to witness our Charism and Spirituality in it fullness. All is about shining God’s Love in the world. It was a missionary experience of crossing rivers and villages like Jesus did. We were invited by our Associate Members for meal sharing in the family of one of them Mr. Georges, in Kinshasa with all the Brothers. It showed really fraternity and the spirit of first Christian Community. We also attended the Regional Council and Regional Chapter meetings of the Region from 21 to 29 March 2013 before we come back to Nairobi. The Word of Life ending the Month of March 2013: “...Whoever loves me, will keep my word, my Father will love him, and I will love him and manifest myself to him” (Jn 14:21). We took some weeks in April to prepare the Provincial Chapter of May 2013. From 25 to 29 April 2013 we visited our Scholasticate and Regionalate community in Lusaka (Zambia), where we had a fraternal time with the Regional Superior and the Brothers. I would like hereby thank all the Brothers. It was also a time to appreciate the organization of the community where each Brother has a specific task and the fraternal collaboration, the liturgical service combined with the prayer office, etc, apart from their studies.
ROL 154 - June 2013 - p. 8 From 10 to 12 May 2013, we had preparatory meeting with the Provincial Council for the Second Session of the Provincial Chapter. From 13 to 18 May 2013, we held the second session of the Provincial Chapter. Providentially this week was marked by two important events: The 13th May is the Birthday of Brother General Superior, and it was a week for novena for the feast of Pentecost (the coming of the Holy Spirit) on 19th May the Sunday that we ended the Provincial chapter. Indeed this second session was based on the Theme of the general Chapter 2012 (“Called by God, sent to the neighbour, and dedicated to be a sign of God’s love in the world”), from which come the decisions or the eleven (11) motions promulgated by the Congregation. Including the report of the Provincial Chapter, first session 2012 and the reports of the Regional Chapters second session 2013. We started with prayer and H.Mass in which we prayed for the guidance of the Holy Spirit during the Chapter and also we prayed for Brother General Superior’s Birthday. We thank God for his grace during the works of the chapter and we thank all the participants, the Brothers and Associate Members for their prayers and dedication in the Provincial Chapter. Indeed, we could experience fraternity, unity, prayer, love, hard work, interest and good will from all the participants which showed the presence of the Holy Spirit. We were able by God’s grace to reach the objective of the Second session of the Provincial Chapter that was to define the practical activities or guidelines for the implementations of the decisions of the General Chapter 2012 and to adapt the Provincial Directory. And these were well achieved, that is why we were allowed to declare the closing of the Chapter in accordance with the Constitutions 188. We would like to thank in a special way Brother General Superior, for his spiritual and financial support which allowed us to organize this Chapter and realize it as it was planned and for
allowing the Presence of a General Assistant to participate in our Provincial Chapter. We are very grateful to Brother Jean Mbeshi, the General Assistance, to Brother Romain Van Hyfte, to all the Regional Superiors and Provincial councilors, and to all the participants. We thank also all the Brothers, Associate Members and collaborators across the province or the Congregation for their spiritual support. The work for the implementation of the decisions of the General chapter and the adaptation of the Provincial Dierctory is done as we wait for the approval of it from Brother General Superior and his council, may we continue to pray so that everybody may find the interest of involving for the renewal of Saint Augustine Province in God’s Love. Let us do it together, united in one heart and one soul. We are aware of the hope and all the expectations based on all the dimensions: Spiritual life, religious life, Community life, Apostolate, formation, etc. All is about God and man who commit to shine God’s love in the world. After the end of the Provincial Chapter, we met the Bishop of Ngong Diocese/Kenya together with the Regional Superior of Blesed Isidore Bakanja region, Brother Gerard and also visited the Community of Loitokitok. “We believe in Love, for God is Love”. u SAINT ANNE REGION • CANADA May 2013: Express, Drummondville: scenario of transition to the College Saint-Bernard
VOLUNTEER, at a ceremony in SaintJacques of Montcalm. Our confrere was both excited and proud. 24th May: Br Denis Nadeau: It is on account of the death of his nephew in Drummondville that we had the visit of Denis. This nephew died at the age of 21 of a heart attack. As Denis has only one brother, he came to support his father during this ordeal. As usual, Denis didn’t “last”: he went back to Philadelphia, as he had come by bus the following Tuesday morning. Our sympathies go with you, Denis.
Indeed, the chairman of the board of the College, Jacques Métivier, is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Boisvenu as Director General of the College. Mr. Boisvenu will assume the role on an interim basis from 12 August until the municipal’s elections in November. If Mr. Cusson becomes mayor of Drummondville, Mr. Boisvenu will benefice a term of 3 years from the general direction of the College until the end of the school year 2015-2016. Moreover, if Mr. Cusson is not elected, he will have the privilege to return to his post. 18th May: Garage’ Sale in Saint-Sulpice. It becomes a tradition … with us, because it is already in Quebec «morals»: trestles are installed along the street, all sorts of things that usually we want to get rid of, and buyers “hang”. This time, the proceeds were $ 600 – for the «missions». 21th May: Great day for Br Philippe Huot, 94 years old, to whom the Queen, by her representative in Quebec, S. Exc. Lieutenant-Governor Pierre Duchesne, has given a silver MEDAL for
25th May: Saint-Sulpice emphasized in an original and impressive way 70 years of religious profession of Br Benoît Poulin - he shall be 90 in December! His seven brothers and sisters did not fail to highlight the features of his youth he had not revealed in his autobiography (eh yes!). Father Arsenault presided the Eucharist on this occasion. The buffet was served in the basement. 26th May: Our Superior provincial Emeritus, Br Donald Joyal may (without success!) begin to draw his «old age pension», with one year’s delay! Do not worry, Donald, other monthly «amounts» will be much more modest... 28th May: Our bay in Saint-AlphonseRodriguez had received the majority of confreres from Saint-Vincent. We highlight two «parties»: the 77 years of our regional Superior, Br Gaston Paquet, as well as his 60th anniversary of religious profession. Nature was all «on our side» on this beautiful day and our cook Michael accompanied us, making sure that the menu would be good. It was his first visit to St-Alphonse and he was rather surprised that we do not benefit of
his services more often! This is another gift that we enjoyed in Beauce and, lately, the Superior General was highly appreciated. “PROFICIAT”, Br Gaston! On the same day, our dear Br Maurice Cournoyer saw his 83rd birthday emphasized. He surprised us! 30th May: Concert! Marie-Claire Laparé, niece of Br René Rolland came to Saint-Vincent to enjoy with us in a classical concert, in the company of two friends: Huguette Perrault, violinist and Rosaire Provencher, violoncellist. For the occasion, it was the chapel which hosted the artists and the audience. We were kept under the charm for almost two hours! BRAVO! 1st June 2013: Fr Michael, sma, Ghanaian working in Togo, comes for a month of ministry at Saint Joseph’s Oratory. He is the confrere of our Chaplain, Fr Tiburce. He is staying with us because he is only at 5 minutes’ walk to get to the Oratory while, if he lived in the convent of Fr Tiburce, he would waste an hour every day on travelling. Another colleague sma had been similarly welcomed home last year. Bro. Jacques Bellemare

SAINT FRANCIS XAVIER COMMUNITY LUSAMBO
We have begun analyzing in our community the keywords that were discussed during the last General Chapter of May 2012, those are the following words: Unity - Solidarity - Spirituality - Charity. Over the past month, Br André Falaki had shared the concept of «Unity». It is for us to respond to the invitation of the chapter, to invest enough energy to strengthen unity in the Congregation. Charisma is the major factor that unites us to the extent we will be able to live authentical lives in the community and in the Congregation. Br André focused on mystical unity that produces and stimulates between Brothers charity which is the perfection of bond (Col. 3:14): “As a member cannot suffer then all the members suffer, one cannot be in honor while all the members not rejoice with him.” He insisted on true unity that is constructive as opposed to the false unity which is destructive, which is unity shared among people outside. We had with all the teachers of the Catholic schools of Lusambo a retreat with the theme: «Humility as imperative in the wake of Christ». It was led by the vicar of the parish of St Anthony. In his speech, he showed that humility is imperative in the wake of Christ, for he must be regarded as the last of all, to be considered as the servant of the others: Servant was considerate in the context of the Old Testament: the worker, a slave, who is submitted to God and works in the service of God; he celebrates the worship; it is also God’s people, Israel is regarded as God’s people. On the apostolic level, we began the final examinations of the school year 2012 -2013, ranging up to 20 June 2013, with the second deliberation; the announcement of results is expected on 2nd July 2013. Up till now postulant John Gan and I are keeping well here amid the hot summer weather (34° C) in Beijing. About two weeks ago, John came back from his hometown in Shandong, where he arranged to get his passport and to obtain the authorization of some of his important documents (such as letter of baptism from his parish church), that he’ll need to hand to the International formation house in the Philippines next year. In the meantime, John’s courses of English and music are still going well. From May 11 to 14, Fr Joseph Guo and I went to Jilin Province (Northeast China) to do our vocation promotion action. There, we stayed at the community of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Family which was originally founded by a French priest, called Fr Charles Joseph Lemaire “MEP” in the 1930s. At this moment there are about 85 professed Sisters in their Congregation, and one novice. One of them is Sr Therese Han, who is a long-time friend of Fr Joseph Guo, our associate member, when he was still studying in the Philippines. Sr Han is now in charge of the novitiate of the Sisters in Jilin; she is also regularly teaching at Jilin Seminary. During the visit, we introduced ourselves to the staff and the students of Jilin Catholic Seminary. At the moment they only have about 25 seminarians; most of them came from other provinces in China. According to the rector, there is recently no single seminarian coming from the Jilin Province itself due to the diminishing number of vocations for the priesthood and religious life there. The Sisters of Jilin are also having just one novice at present. Both the Sisters and the Priests there explained to us that like in many other parts of China, the decline of the number of seminarians, Priests
and Sisters is going very fast. They said perhaps it is due to the negative impact of the economy growth in China, as well as due to one-child policy being applied to the entire nation of China. In addition, during our stay in Jilin, we also paid a visit to the Sisters’ novitiate, clinic, orphanage and rest house for the elderly. The Sisters and the priests whom we met there have expressed their willingness to assist us in recruiting candidates for our Congregation. We are very grateful for their hospitality and kindness during our four-day visit there. Meanwhile, Fr Alexander Tjahjono, OCarm, and Fr Erik Wicaksono, OCarm, still regularly come to our community once a week to celebrate H.Mass and to give lessons on spirituality to our postulant. Father Joseph Guo also still continues to visit us every two months to give spiritual guidance to our postulant, as well as to celebrate our daily community Mass, and to lead a recollection during his stay. Last week, Fr Joseph Zhang came to our community to give his bimonthly services as spiritual director of our postulant. During his stay here in Beijing, he assisted Sr Agnes Li of Yongcheng diocese, Shanxi, who is preparing herself to visit Rome and Belgium next month. That’s all what we could report to you concerning our community during this month of May 2013. Please continue to pray for the future of our mission in China. May God bless you all! Bro. Adrian Hartotanojo

ProvincialatE AT Eikenburg Br Jan Nouwens celebrated his birthday in May. On 16 May many of us took part in the yearly pilgrimage to a Marian shrine, which this time took place in GentOostakker, in May. It was an attractive occasion, with the Eucharistic service at the basilica (see picture), a nice lunch, a visit to the grotto, and a time of recollection at the adjacent chapel of the Sisters of the Childhood Jesu as the rainy weather prevented us from keeping it in the open air.
ROL 154 - June 2013 - p. 15 The board of Caraes Fund Netherlands had its annual meeting with the members of the Advisory Council at Eikenburg. Roermond On Tuesday 21 May, thirteen people from Belgium, pastoral coordinators of several schools of the Brothers of Charity, were our guests for a contact meeting consultation. Brother Martien Hussaarts
The first two non-religious have settled at Brothers House Eikenburg; they are Mr Sprik and Mrs Haarman, who were welcomed as new residents. Our residents attended a concert at the Sisters of Charity. The musical performance was presented by volunteers as part of the “Wensboom” (fantasy tree). The “Wensboom” is an initiative of the St Anna Convent Fund. Residents can express their fantasy dream individually like a visit to a cheese farm, a day at the amusement park, the “Efteling” or a pilgrimage
u SAINT VINCENT REGION • BELGIUM On Thursday 16 May hundred and four Brothers, Sisters and Assosciate Members from Belgium and the Netherlands arrived at Oostakker (Ghent) for the yearly marian pilgrimage. Having enjoyed some coffee, tea and cake we walked up to basilica for the Eucharistic service presided by Fr Jef Goethals, who was assisted by deacon Filip D’Hooghe. The organist, Bernard Giot, gave proper support to the hymns. It made a nice lasting impression; our Dutch Brothers and Sisters were pleasantly surprised by the performance which was modern and had depth. After H. Mass we sat down for lunch at a nearby cosy restaurant. All present were pleased with the attendance of Brother General, the Provincial and Regional Superior. They made time for a formal talk and an informal chat. In the afternoon we paid a visit to the grotto and thereafter we gathered for a recollection at the chapel of the Sisters of the Holy Childhood Jesu, sheltered from the rain. At half past three, we concluded the pilgrimage with sandwiches. By 4 o’clock the first participants left
for home. All pilgrims looked very satisfied with what they had experienced. On Thursday, 13 June, the day trip of the Brothers of the third age took place. At eleven o’clock 69 Brothers went aboard the “Mozart”, a tourist boat on the riverbank of the Scheldt in Temse. The traject was as follows: under both bridges across the river at Temse, via Hingene, Buitenland, Notelaer pavilion, Steendorp down to Rupelmonde where the Rupel River and sea canal discharge into the River Scheldt, to Hemiksem Abbey, down the Scheldt to Hoboken and past the famous roadstead of Antwerp. We sailed past the “Kattendijk” lock and the “Royers” lock down the widening Scheldt. Then past Kallo and the nuclear power station of Doel. Opposite of it was the picturesque village Lillo surrounded by industrial buildings. Some big seagoing freighters carrying thousands of containers moved past us. Then we made a U-turn and returned to Temse. A guide provided us all the time with interesting
ROL 154 - June 2013 - p. 16 information. The catering was excellent: an appetizer, a cold dish and a drink. Later we enjoyed coffee or tea with cherry cake. We disembarked at 5 o’clock and returned home quite satisfied.
u Saint Dominic Region • TANZANIA SAINT John BAPTIST community MAVURUNZA - DAR ES SALAAM Brother Augustin Kapaya informed us that Father Triest Shrine is getting more popularity, with more devotees coming to pray; one lady who came for treatment at our dispensary and “accidentally” stopped at the shrine to pray got better miraculously. That same day she was also going to be evicted from her house due to some loans she had from the bank and it didn’t happen! She attributes all these favours to the intercession of Father Triest. The community has started novena to Father Triest as we approach his rebirth to eternity on June 24. We pray that a
really miracle may happen soon to speed up the process of beatification of our beloved founder. We had the provincial chapter in Nairobi from May 13-18 in which we discussed the motions from the General Chapter and tried to concretize them in our African context. We also developed our provincial directorium that will help us on many practical issues. Moreover, we felt a very strong sense of unity in the province as we tried to share openly the challenges and opportunities that are around us. The hallmark was the creation of the provincial directorium that will help us also to develop our own regional directorium.
ROL 154 - June 2013 - p. 17 We had also some light moments in which we discovered very funny Brothers like Brother Romain and Brother Felicien, in which some Brothers suggested they were fit to become “certified” comedians. They were the “life of the party”; just to use an American expression. On the other hand, Brother Jean Salumu proved to be well versed in our constitutions in which he reminded us that the rule number 28 from the “The Hospital Brothers of Saint-Vincent de Paul” exhorts us to have “Gillette” in common, as that jargon became one of the key words in our beloved chapter.
EMMAUS community – MJIMWEMA On May 19, 2013, we had our monthly recollection. All confreres have actively participated. On May 22, Brother Pierre attended the quarterly meeting of the diocesan Deanery at the minor seminary of Iterambogo. The same day, Brother Ambroise traveled to Dar Es Salaam for follow up of his academic transcript. On May 25, the two Brothers Gilbert and Fidèle went to Rwanda to take part in the training session organized by Fracarita International.
EMMANUEL community MAENDELEO From June 1-2, Brother Julius Katota attended a high profile Toilettes & Douches meeting of “Tanzania Business Council” in Dar Es Salaam, in which he was given an opportunity to share what Brothers of Charity do as nonprofit organization from Kigoma region. They were impressed with his presentation especially on our mission and the strategic plan we have. The keynote speaker was the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania his Honorable Mohamed Ghalib Bilal. There was more interest for them to learn from our experience. We hope that these contacts with the government officials may bear fruits in the near future to improve our services.
Bro. Venance Kapita
MArumba At present the rooms of the Brothers in Marumba are renovated. Some accompanying pictures give you an idea of the works. Nevertheless, the Brothers have already setlled in the unfinished rooms because electiricity and water are available. They have to help do while hoping for somore comfort in a later stage.
Sunday, June 2, Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, we have participated in the Eucharistic celebration followed Finissage Veranda by a Grand Procession of the Blessed Sacrament in Cathedral Parish of Our Lady of Victory. It was a time of intense prayer for Christians who braved in the sun of midday. Over two hundred children took their first communion. You should have seen them in uniform yellow-white singing and dancing to the rhythm of Saint-Joseph Choir.

CENTER FOR DEAF – RUMONGE The center for deaf community in Rumonge is very active and vibrant. With the arrival of Brother Musonda Flavian we hope he will continue to do the good works that Brother Hilalius was doing. He will be 3 going to Nairobi for further studies. In Rumonge we hope to open also a workshop for our youth and give them the skills they will need to be competitive in the job market. Thanks to the collaboration and partnership with AHD in Burundi and Fracarita International, we hope to open this workshop in the near future. We have already sent 7 youth in Burundi who are learning and will train others in different fields of welding, painting, electricity, carpentry, etc.
