BRBC ANNUAL REPORT 2014

introduction REV. ROB SELLITTO

As a child I remember going on road trips with my family. We could never afford to fly anywhere when I was young so vacations were all within driving distance. My dad often tried to make the best of these ‘closer-to-home’ vacations by taking us somewhere different than we’d been before. I often remember seeing him looking over maps spread across our kitchen table. Plotting where we were going, and figuring out the best way to get there. Today my dad uses a GPS when he travels, no more large maps to pour over, just a screen to tap to tell you where to go. Both have the same purpose, the same goal, but do it differently. One of the great things about paper maps is that they often help you see the whole picture more clearly - where you have to go, but also how you get there, and where you have been - all in a single glance. In many ways this document is like a map. A map in which we are able to see where we have been, where we are, and where we have to go. The purpose of a map is to ultimately help you get where you are going. In many ways, this document has the same purpose. As we look back, we are thinking forward. As we reflect on what was, and what happened, we see how it moves us forward. All the while we are reminded why we are a church, and how we are to respond to the great responsibility we have to lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.

100th anniversary celebration Throughout 2014, we celebrated 100 years of ministry at Bromley Road Baptist Church. Originally started as Highland Park Baptist Church, Bromley continues to serve the same Westboro community as it did 100 years ago. The celebration culminated on October 25 and 26 with an anniversary reception on Saturday evening and a special anniversary service, with guest speaker Brian Craig of the Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec, on Sunday morning.

board of deacons FRANK FEDYK, CHAIR

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” Philippians 4:4 (NIV) 2014 was Bromley Road Baptist Church’s 100th Anniversary of worship and service in the name of Lord Jesus. It was a time to rejoice, recall the ministries and legacy of the faithful who have gone before us, and to discern what God is calling us to joing Him in doing in the future. Highlights involved several 100th year blessings – the bulletin board of pictures, remembrances and faith stories; the sharing of the Word by Rev. Jonathan Mills (who grew up attending Bromley, went into ministry and was Lead Pastor at Kanata Baptist Church before leaving in the summer with his family to be a missionary in Rwanda); the children’s drama presentation “Let’s Build a Church”; a worship presentation by the Quintet of the music sung by the Whitestone choir group; as well as the Anniversary celebration weekend featuring food and fellowship on Saturday evening followed by the Rev. Brian Craig, Director of Congregation Health, Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec, preaching at Sunday worship services. Praise the Lord! “I will bless you . . . and you will be a blessing to others” (Genesis 12:2 NLT). God calls His people to be transformed and to make His Kingdom known. Part of the Bromley’s Anniversary blessing was to be a blessing to others. Being a blessing included the construction of an herb garden for an Ottawa west-end housing community; providing school supplies and back packs for children from low-income families returning to school in September and delivering over 200 pairs of children shoes and boots for needy families in the Pinecrest Road region of the City. Bromley was faithful to, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.” (Matthew 25:35 NIV). Deliberate local ministries included the collection of bags and boxes of canned food and paper products to bless two west-end food banks; support for refugee services through “Ride for Refuge” participation and fundraising; the arrival of refugees new to Canada and on-going prayer and financial support of our local, national and international ministry partners. Deacons, Pastors and Board of Management members were vested in prayer, discernment and discussions of the mission, vision, and ministry priorities of Bromley. Board of Management led the updating of Bromley’s By-law and continuance documents to be in compliance with the new Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act. Pastor Rob and Deacons strived to encourage and grow community through the church-wide study “The Me I Want to Be” (John Ortberg); hosting a “new-to-Bromley” luncheon; and offering passionate Sunday morning worship services. The goal of Sunday worship is to lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ, and we strived to do just that. Bromley’s ministry plans for 2015 and beyond are being shaped and guided by the three priorities approved by members (spiritual formation, small groups, and newcomers). Our prayer is that individually and collectively, we seek God’s will and direction as we join Him to reveal His glory as He makes a difference in our lives, and the lives of others. To God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit be the glory.

board of management It has been another busy year for the Board of Management as we continued to carry out our duties which include the financial management of the church and the upkeep of the church building. In 2014, the Board was comprised of six volunteers including Lisa Praine (Chair), Bill Crompton (Secretary), Eric Ebeltoft, Murray Sturk, Ian Smiley and Paul Black as Treasurer. As our building continues to age, there are continued challenges associated with creating spaces that are fresh and appealing to first-time visitors and long-term members alike. We are thankful for the dedicated work of the Indoor Working Team, under the steady leadership of Irvin Stewart, who carry out many of the day-to-day maintenance tasks. We are also thankful for Helen Flaherty’s dedication and excellent work throughout the year managing the many contractors who do work within the building. In 2014, the Board was involved in several matters affecting the administrative life of the church and we enjoyed celebrating the 100th anniversary together with our church family. Despite the tension associated with the anniversary planning, it was so exciting to see the impact that the event had on the Ottawa Mission, not only through our financial donation, but also in our ability to provide a learning opportunity for those enrolled in their kitchen program. It was also a blessing to know that our donations of children’s shoes (over 200 pair!) will have a significant impact on the lives of children in our community. Our thanks go out to all those who assisted in the planning and execution of events to celebrate the 100th anniversary, and to all those who attended and supported the different causes. We are excited to see where God leads Bromley in the next 100 years of ministry. The Board of Management was also tasked with completing the continuance process under the new Not-for-Profit Corporations Act in 2014. Our thanks to all who contributed to the review process and the approval of our new General Operating By-law in 2014. Our charitable status was continued and we are now a corporation under the Not-for-Profit Corporations Act. Following the adoption of the new By-law in June 2014, the second phase of the process began which includes the adoption of new operating policies for the church. In November 2014, eight new operating policies were approved which addressed several issues that had previously been addressed by the By-law itself. The Board continues to work on new or revised Operating Policies for several important ministries, teams, and adminsitrative matters that will be brought to the congregation for approval over the course of 2015. After major investments into the south-side sanctuary roof and parking lot in 2013, the Board did not intend to undertake any significant capital projects in 2014. It came to light in early 2014, however, that the building required a Fire Alarm System to comply with current Building and Fire codes. As a result, and thanks to the tireless work of Bill Crompton, a system was quickly designed and installed in the early fall. The system is now fully operational and we thank all those who worked on, or around, the installation as it took place. Thanks to the generous support of all of you and God’s provision, the church finished the year with a surplus of funds in 2014. These funds will be invested into future ministry opportunities or to capital improvements of the building. In 2015, we will also seek to reduce our reliance on outside sources of income (e.g. revenue from the rental of our building) for our operating budget so that we are self-sufficient should those rentals cease. Thanks to your faithful support, the church approved a budget of approximately $386,000 for 2015 and we look 6

forward to seeing how God uses that money in ministry this year. With newcomers as a priority in 2015, the Board is hoping to undertake more cosmetic improvements to the building in the coming year. We are look forward to sharing plans with the congregation as they are available. Our focus will be to create a welcoming, comfortable, and worshipful space for all who walk through our doors.

senior pastor REV. ROB SELLITTO

In 2014, we celebrated what it meant to be a church at the young age of 100. While that was a great celebration and reflection, we know that getting to 100 was difficult. There were disagreements on how we should celebrate, and unfortunately what should have been a joy for all, became difficult for some. Even in difficult times though, God remains faithful, and joy is always an opportunity. As we draw closer to God, I am always amazed at how much closer He draws to us. As we celebrated 100 years we did not just celebrate, we changed people’s lives. We were blessed to be catered by the Ottawa Mission and met some wonderful people who are striving to turn their lives around. By simply having them cater a meal we helped a group of people gain and develop skills that can change their lives. Together we collected over 100 shoes for children living in women’s shelters, and received 100 more from the Ottawa Children’s Choir who were also inspired to help. We also joined together to pray for each other, our church and people we don’t know for 100 days. My hope is that our prayers reflected God’s heart and changed ours. One of the highlights for me this past year was when we collected school supplies. We had received a request to help students get school supplies and you responded in an amazing way! I was amazed at how generous you all were to respond to the need we were presented with. Your love and generosity is a blessing to many. While 2014 had some tough moments for us as a church, God’s faithfulness was constant. As we continued to strive to keep Christ at the centre of all we do as a church, it was amazing to see the growth many of us experienced in our spiritual lives. Seeing people’s lives change for the better because of God is the greatest privilege I have as a person, and as a pastor. As a church, we are here to lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ, and it is amazing to see that happening. Over the last year we have welcomed many people for the first time. Some for the first time to Bromley, and others back to church for the first time in a long time. Many of those first time guests have chosen to stay at Bromley, and we are blessed to have them join us in being the church. It is exciting to see what God is doing with this church. My hope is that through everything we do, we remember why we are doing it. Whether it is the songs we sing, or the prayers we pray; the ways we use our gifts in service, or the sermons I have the privilege of preaching; the friends we visit, or the small groups we attend. It is my hope that in all we do, we come to know Christ more, and to make Him known. We are a church that is here to lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. 2014 was a great year, and 2015 promises to be even better as we join God in what he is inviting us to be a part of.

kids’ pastor CHRISTINA FISHER

What an amazing year 2014 was for our kids’ ministry! There are three lessons that everything has pointed back to this year in Sunday School. They were: “I can trust God no matter what”, “I should treat others the way that I want to be treated”, and “I need to make the wise choice”. These three lessons are what every week in Sunday School has been based around this year. Whether we are talking about starting a band, working on how to serve people, asking ourselves if we can really be patient, or even playing some crazy, made up sport, we are learning more about God and the kids are being challenged to think about their relationship with Him. This year, we took the lessons we were learning and started using them for our younger kids as well. We have a fast growing group of kids in the nursery who are so fun, energetic and ready to learn. It’s very exciting to see their joy as they learn more about God and His love for them. I want to thank all of the volunteers for your time and commitment to help the kids of our church know God in deeper and more relevant ways. The amount of love I see you show to them is truly amazing! Thank you so much!

pastor of youth & young adults SARAH ARMSTRONG

2014 was wrought with joy, learning and some wonderful service. God has accomplished great things this year. Most notably, one youth and one young adult have made choices to either renew or to start a relationship with Christ. Faith is often a rollercoaster in the first few years so we’re continuing to explore this together. Usually the greatest need in the youth ministry has been volunteers but by the grace of God, we had a very committed volunteer come on board this year. Currently, Amplified (senior youth group) and Anchor (young adults) are still in transition and would benefit from more people attending. Please remember us in prayer, that God would send nudges to people to invite family, friends, neighbours, and strangers to these groups. In 2014 we took several weeks to discuss spiritual disciplines (e.g. tithing, communion, prayer, fasting, etc.) and that has been wonderful. These are all so important in order to bring us closer to Christ, so we can never discuss them enough. I think of all the topics covered, these are potentially the most impactful as they gave the youth a firm grip on their own personal relationship with their Heavenly Father. Besides our annual Blizzard retreat (always a favourite for the youth that attend), service activities we did as a group early in the year also stand out. For example, delivering school supplies and providing a rare treat of fruit to the Matthew House residents, and when the young adults and youth groups joined together at the Ottawa Mission to prepare small bags of trail mix for the homeless. Let’s make sure every year we think more of our “neighbours”, and less of ourselves.

CHRISTINA FISHER, CAMP DIRECTOR We had a fantastic summer in 2014. We had great fun swimming, playing, making art, and learning about who we are and how God made us to be unique. We saw several new campers, as well as many kids from the previous camp. It was great to see the lasting relationships that were made with the families. This summer in particular we had many families who were going through tough times. We had parents with health concerns, marital issues, and custody problems. Many families were able to find a place of love and support with our staff. I heard many times how grateful parents were to have a safe and loving place to send their kids. It was a blessing for me personally to get to care for so many people. Many of our lessons this summer focused on being who you are meant to be. It’s so often that kids find pressure to conform to pattern of the world, but we challenged them to consider who God might have made them to be and how to go about figuring that out. With a good portion of our kids not coming from a faith background, it was wonderful to see them excited about God having a design in mind for them personally. To watch kids flourish and grow into who they were meant to be was an amazing blessing. On behalf of the staff and myself, thank you for your prayers and financial support that went into making camp happen!

small groups Small groups are an important part of being the church. They give us the opportunity to really connect with others in the congregation, allowing us to study God’s word together, share life together, and build lasting relationships that go beyond Sunday mornings at church. missions NORMAN WORMALD, PAST CHAIR

Missions has long been a focus of Bromley Road Baptist Church. This work continued in 2014 through our three partners in mission, as described below. Iglesia Bautista Emmanuel, El Salvador In 2014, a school of Peace was successfully run at the mission in established in the community of Los Cruces, in the department of Uzulutan. Thirty five children attended, learning a program which reaffirmed the commitment to peace while providing an alternative to joining a gang. The challenge is to use limited resources to build relationships with those at risk in the community. Despite the continuing violence, with patience and persistence, the gospel of peace is changing communities. It was exciting to have the main church from the capital city, San Salvador as well as other missions travel to a dedication of the new mission being opened. Eglise Chretienne le Rocher, Quebec This year, after evaluating the options, the cement pad in the parking lot was used as a base to build a large fridge. This means being able to accept more direct contributions from generous local farmers. The volunteers are a mix of non-Christian, as well as Christian, so it is challenging to build strong enough relationships to be able to share the good news of the gospel. A lesson learned is that the food basket ministry is one of the few positive contacts with the surrounding community. It was inspiring to see the number of volunteers who dedicate their time, week after week, to the food basket ministry. Bruno and Kathleen Soucy, Bolivia The major change was after finishing the second trimester at the Spanish Language Institute in Costa Rica in September, the Soucys moved to Cochabomba, Bolivia. The challenge is to navigate the existing relationships between Latin American and Canadian churches, while keeping an open mind for recognizing and building new relationships. A lesson learned is that despite the number of North American churches working in the area, many communities have little understanding of the relevance of the gospel. It was inspiring to be able to speak Spanish while revisiting the same El Salvadorean community that confirmed their calling.

pastoral care LILIAN ROTAR, PAST CHAIR

The letter of James, the Apostle proves to be a good guide for members of the Pastoral Care Team, containing as it does much practical wisdom for Christian brothers and sisters in relationships, being “doers of the word and not hearers only”, as well as practicing the “Royal Law: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” These have been the aim and purpose of the Pastoral Care Team of Bromley Road Baptist throughout many years. It has been a good thing that, in spite of the fact 2014 has been a year of some turmoil, some thirty members and adherents of BRBC have been served with dedication and love by the twelve members of the Team, as well as by others who have participated in visitation, friendly phone visits and, importantly, supporting the Prayer Chain. A challenge faced by the Team is one we share with our ‘clients’ – aging, not only in the congregation but also Team members. It is not always easy for us to travel to the various hospitals and homes where our people are living, find and pay for parking places. The values of making visits far outweighs difficulties, however, and bringing comfort and joy to people brings its own reward. It is at the monthly team meetings, when members make their reports of activity during the previous month, that the Team is inspired to carry on its work with increased enthusiasm and vigor. During the meetings, as well, a greater understanding of the needs and difficulties facing members of the congregation emerges: illness, including mental health problems economic difficulties; loneliness, spiritual distress, bereavement are some of the troubling circumstances occurring. Possible solutions or suggestions for help sometimes arise as these are discussed, and we know that when people realize they are being heard it is always helpful. We are also aware of the value of the Keenagers and Saturday Outing Group gatherings in offering opportunities for fellowship and friendly recreation. Celebration of Jean Gamble’s 99th birthday was another opportunity for rejoicing in 2014. It has been the wish that each member of the Team completes the training course offered by the Ottawa Pastoral Care Training Centre and qualifies for a Police Check certificate which is required by most Ottawa Hospitals for pastoral visitation. The Courses and additional workshops are offered several times a year. In 2014, members of the Pastoral Care Team included Fred and Laraine Bigham, Eileen Smith, Barbara Brown, Mary Rosebrugh, Velma Parker, Gale Foubert, Pat Rushworth, Joe and Kay Foster, Barbara Peachy (Deacons’ Representative) and Carol Lesnick.

treasurer PAUL BLACK, TREASURER

God continues to shower Bromley with His goodness in 2014. We were able to cover all expenses and ended the year with a surplus of $53,755 of receipts over expenditures in the General (Operating) Fund. This surplus has been created by the generous giving of church members, and the utilization of other forms of income to increase revenues - namely the rental of the church building to groups throughout the week. In 2014, the total revenue from the rental of the church building was $58,566. As per the 2014 budget approval, 50% of these funds were transferred to the Capital Projects Fund at the end of the year to assist in the financing of capital projects. In 2014, the installation of the alarm system throughout the church building used all funds from the Capital Projects fund and ran the balance to a negative of $1,786. This difference was made up out of the General (Operating) Fund with an additional transfer of $1,786. The balance of the Capital Projects Fund on December 31, 2014 is therefore $0. It will be replenished in 2015 by the additional rental income and other designated offerings to the fund.

St. Timothy’s Classical Academy, has operated in the church building since their inception in 2004, and is our primary rental tenant. Bromley currently has a lease agreement in place for the balance of the 2014-2015 school year with an automatic option for the 2015-2016 school year. We are aware that the school is actively seeking an alternative location for the 2015-2016 school year, however. As a result, the congregation has taken steps, through the approval of the 2015 budget, to reduce the dependence on facility rental income to cover operating expenses by reducing the portion of facility rental revenue that is used to cover operating expenses (and is therefore put in the General (Operating) Fund). In 2015, only 25% of the facility rental income will be retained to cover operating expenses, while 75% of the funds will be transferred to the Capital Projects Fund. The hope is that by 2016, we will be in a position to again reduce our reliance on this source of revenue. Use of Facilities income in 2014 came from the following sources: St. Timothy’s Classical Academy Northern Stars Chorus The Meeting House Ottawa Children’s Choir Girl Guides of Canada Other

$50,175 $1,560 $3,375 $475 $100 $2,941

Total budget expenditures for 2014 were $380,577, approximately $4,053 over budget. The over-budget disbursements were generally the donations to the Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec (over budget by approximately $7,000) and Partners in Mission (over budget by approximately $7,800). These are designated offering lines meaning any funds designated for these causes are sent, whether or not we’ve surpassed our commitment. Once again for 2014, the audit was completed by McKechnie and Company Chartered Accountants. I am thankful to them for their continued patience as Bromley’s financials are brought up to the standards of a professional audit and their diligence in checking the work. Their audited financial statements and associated notes are enclosed beginning on page 23. I would like to take a moment to once again thank Theresa Fruhwirth and Susan Andrews for their tireless work as Envelope Secretary and Associate Treasurer, respectively. I rely heavily on their input to complete my tasks and to maintain accurate and complete records. In the following pages, please find schedules for the funds detailing receipts and expenditures for each over the course of 2014. Thank you for your continued support of the work of Bromley Road Baptist Church and it’s ministry.
