FOLDING PEDAL. NOTE: if the washer W is omitted, the bearing will be irreparably damaged.

To fit, you need a 24mm AF socket wrench for a steel pedal bolt or a 10AF hex-key-wrench for a titanium bolt: the pedal bolt must be torqued down correctly, 30NM, and this cannot be achieved without the correct spanner. Remember that the left hand crank has a left hand thread. Ensure that the washer W is in place on the bolt (to lie between the bearing and the crank), and offer the bolt to the crank. The thread can be started by simply turning the pedal (unfolded) at the same time as exerting a little inwards pressure. Normally it is possible to screw in the pedal bolt almost fully by continuing with this action. However, if there is any stiffness, it may be necessary instead partially to fold the pedal, with the black nylon latch plate resting on top of the bearing housing: the bolt can then be gripped directly. Once it is no longer possible to turn the bolt further in this way, partially fold the pedal, and continue by using the wrench, until the bolt is fully tight.
