Council Showcases Apprentices Bromsgrove District Council showcased its budding young talent as part of national Apprenticeship Week in March. Apprentices learning their trades with the Council shared their experiences for National Apprenticeship Week. Council leader Margaret Sherrey said: “We are proud to offer young residents a chance to get work experience and learn skills which will stand them in good stead to continue along their future career paths.” Here are what two current apprentices say about their placement and where they thought it could take them. Network and infrastructure apprentice Ryan Jukes (pictured) said: “I am part of the team that looks after the network and servers that run the councilʼs IT, and Iʼm also studying towards recognised qualifications. I want my apprenticeship to take me into this full time, and hopefully this will give me the experience and qualifications that I will need to go further. I feel I learn a lot from my colleagues.”
Finance apprentice Jordan Smith added: “My apprenticeship is in finance and as part of that I am studying with the Association of Accounting Technicians at Bourneville College. Ideally I would like to become a fully qualified accountant in the future, and I hope my apprenticeship will help develop my skills and give me the experience so I can pursue this. Bromsgrove based Broad Street DIY recently won the accolade of being the UK’s Retail Communicator of the Year, beating off strong competition from DIY retailers across the country, including national chain stores such as Tile Choice. Broad Street DIY was shortlisted for the DIY Week magazine annual awards in December. Staff from the Bromsgrove shop joined hundreds of top names from the DIY industry at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, on Tuesday February 16 where the winner in each of eighteen categories was announced.

Birthday Bash Raises Cash for Birmingham Children’s Hospital The owner of a Bromsgrove based business has celebrated his 65th birthday by raising money for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital. John Singleton, from Singletons Nurseries at Lydiate Ash, hosted a party for friends and family at Grafton Manor on February 6. In lieu of birthday gifts he asked for prizes for a raffle, which was held on the night and raised £800.00. The cheque was presented to the hospital on February 18 and will benefit the childrenʼs cancer ward. Prior to this, in September 2015, John and his wife Claire were part of a team of volunteers who helped organise a charity ball at the Birmingham Hyatt to raise funds for the childrenʼs play area and the brain injury unit at the hospital. The event raised £7835. A raffle held at the ball raised enough additional money to send a young boy suffering from a brain condition to Euro Disney with his mother.

Treat your dirty, tarnished jewellery to a professional free clean Cupitt Jeweller is encouraging people to fall in love all over again with their old and dirty jewellery, by taking advantage of a free, professional cleaning service for gold, silver and platinum items.
In many cases the free cleaning service will be completed within an hour. However, you may be asked to return the next day to collect.
ʻFree Clean Wednesdayʼ was launched by Cupitt Jeweller on March 9. Every Wednesday the public are invited to take their dirty and tarnished jewellery into the shop, on The Strand in Bromsgrove, where staff will carry out an inspection to ensure the item is suitable for cleaning. This examination will prove useful in alerting customers to any damage to their jewellery which may not be clearly visible to the naked eye. If the item is undamaged, staff will carry out the professional clean, removing hard to reach dirt with an ultra sonic machine. A steam clean with a high pressure steamer removes any remaining residue. Hand cream, dust and hard water deposits are some of the things that can cause fine jewellery to lose its original sparkle. Grime will cling to scratches or abrasions.

Market Operators Roll Up In Redditch
The new operators of Redditch market paid a visit to the town to meet traders and discuss plans for the future. Bosses from Stratford-based Sketts, who won the tender to operate the market from February, hit the town with Borough Councillor Greg Chance, who is responsible for economic development. Sketts will operate a five-day general retail market and will also have the opportunity, in conjunction with Redditch Borough Council and the Town Centre partnership, to organise and operate additional events which can either run alongside or separate from the existing market.
Skettsʼ Senior manager Russell Dean said: “Markets are our speciality and we can see Redditch has the foundations to build on especially as it has a designated space for stalls and all the traders were really positive. Itʼs a difficult time for markets to survive but we hope, by working with the Kingfisher Centre, we can complement each other and provide residents and visitors to Redditch alike with the ultimate shopping experience.” Cllr Chance added: “We are very lucky to have such a diverse market which operates five days a week. This is great news for the town and I look forward to seeing the town centre busier than ever.”

Side by Side – Working together to transform the lives of people living with Dementia “This service offers the perfect opportunity for volunteers to help people with dementia to continue to feel a part of their community and to do the things we take for granted.” The Alzheimerʼs Society is looking for local, dedicated volunteers for a new service to help people with dementia continue doing the things they love. The Side by Side community project is designed to support people who might sometimes feel isolated or find it difficult to leave their homes, to remain active and feel part of their local community. You could make a weekly telephone call to someone with dementia, or take someone out to a football match, go for a walk or simply go out for a cup of tea and a chat.
