Gardening Fighting the Frosts
by Pippa Greenwood
if the container is in a very prominent position. If very harsh weather is forecast or a spell of mild weather has promoted some soft, new growth, drape a double layer of horticultural fleece over the top growth of the plants and anchor it well. Alternatively, consider Easy Fleece Jackets: they come in three sizes and have a draw-string and toggle so that you can easily insert the plant and then secure it – find out more on my website www.pippagreenwood. com/products/protectyour-crops. With frost, rain and perhaps even some snow, at this time of year our gardens can be in for quite a battering. Although most of your garden plants are probably fairly frost resistant, what can you do to minimise the damage to those which are not so hardy? It’s time to get outside and take some precautions. Plants in containers are particularly vulnerable to freezing or frosting, and thin-walled containers pose the greatest threat. Where possible, plunge your pots by digging a hole in the soil and placing the plant in its pot into the hole. If it is too heavy to move then wrap it well in several layers of bubble wrap, polythene or old curtains, using lengths of hessian to create a more appealing outermost layer
A double fleece layer can be used on plants in beds and borders too, or to protect slightly tender wall shrubs. Much larger plants can be protected with a home-made ‘cage’ – wrap a framework of four stakes or sturdy canes with netting or chicken wire, then fill the central space around the plant with dry bracken, straw or leaves. Evergreens in containers and in open ground may suffer from drought as well as foliage or stem growth, so continue to water these, especially if they are in a sheltered spot or the weather has been dry. A deep mulch applied to the soil or compost surface before the ground freezes will help to keep water available. Although most fruit trees - like apples and pears, cherries and
plums - are hardy, they are also prone to damage. The main risk is to newly opened blossom, though the buds themselves may be damaged too, with late frosts being the most harmful. If you are planting new fruit plants, it really pays to buy from a specialist nursery and to get late-flowering varieties, as they are less likely to be flowering when there is still a risk of frost. Finally, use fleece to cover any seeds already sown out of doors. A double layer of wellanchored fleece or a fleececovered pull-out EasyTunnel is quick and easy to install, and will help to provide protection and that bit of extra warmth for germinating seeds and seedlings. If you are planning on sowing any early varieties of crops such as broad beans or lettuce, then I’d also suggest that you cover the soil before you sow. A layer of wellanchored polythene will keep off excess rain and allow a little warmth to build up, so when you sow the seeds they won’t suffer from excess sogginess and won’t get such a cold shock. Velvet Underground by Pippa Greenwood
They may be known as ‘velvet coated gentlemen’, but if you have a problem with moles in your garden, it is highly unlikely you will call them anything so polite! So what can you do if your lawn becomes decorated with ounds o finely turned soil, or if plants start to disappear beneath soil level as subsidence occurs within the flowerbed, or an entire row o vegetables is excavated from below? Moles can do a lot of damage to a lawn, largely because that fine soil acts as an e cellent seedbed for weeds and can make the lawn surface slippery. Mole runs beneath your lawn, flowerbeds or vegetable lots can occasionally cause the plants to suffer from drought, as the soil is no longer in contact with the roots. Often, when the tunnels collapse subsidence occurs, and plants can literally fall over. Moles can sometimes be deterred by high-pitched sounds or vibrations. Try inserting children’s windmills over the mole infested areas, as the vibration that passes down these into the soil is said to send moles scampering away. Similarly, you can plunge glass bottles into the soil with the neck protruding. The noise
and vibrations created as the wind whistles over the mouth of the bottles may also discourage moles. Very smelly substances, such as mole smokes, can work against moles. These are like fireworks and, inserted into the run, produce unpleasant smoke. However, with these and other smelly deterrents, once the smell has subsided the mole may return. Traps are available from some garden centres or online stores. They must be correctly set and you must wear gloves as the moles will avoid the trap if they detect human scent. It is much more effective to employ a specialist mole catcher who is adept at trapping them and, since they often charge only on the basis of moles caught, it need not be too expensive a process either. Moles do eventually decide to go elsewhere, and although this does not imply that your garden will then remain free of moles, if the problem has been very bad one year it may not be quite so severe the next. Some say that the plant caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyrus) will deter moles and as it does seem to work for some gardeners and the plants are
fairly attractive it is worth giving it a try! Some gardeners report success with ultrasonic devices that can be inserted into the ground. Once again, I am afraid that it seems the majority o you find these ine ective and indeed I will never forget once seeing a molehill which appeared directly around the base of one of these gadgets in a friend’s garden - so they are not a method I recommend. If all else fails, and attempting to look at this problem in a positive light, bear in mind that incredibly finely turned soil can be useful and many gardeners I know, including the wonderful ‘grandfather of gardening’ Geoffrey Smith, used the soil as a medium in which to grow an excellent crop of seedlings! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com to buy gorgeous UK grown vegetable plants accompanied by weekly advice emails from Pippa, or to peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, fleece jackets for plants, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Education News Students Embark on a Winning Venture Since being selected for the team in September, the students have been working tirelessly to produce handmade, high quality wine bottle stands.
Embark, this yearʼs Young Enterprise team from Bromsgrove School got off to a fantastic start at their first trade fair in November.
Judges said that they thought Embark have a “new and exciting product with a great choice of designs in recycled wood”.
Thirteen students showcased both their products and their sales skills at the Victorian Christmas Fayre in Worcester on Saturday November 26.
With the help of their Business Advisors, Lyndon Stokes (The Best of Bromsgrove) and Robert Elliot (Hogarth Hotels), the young entrepreneurs have carried out market research and taken to social media to promote their products.
The enterprising team were rewarded for their hard work by receiving third place in the Best Company competition as well as taking home a respectable amount of profit, from sales of their products.
It is still early days in the overall competition, but Embark are already showing a great deal of promise and their Link Teacher, Miss Williams, says she is “extremely proud and canʼt wait to see whatʼs next for them”.
They were impressed with their “very professional display which told the story of the company and its product”.

Health
By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk
Realistic Resolutions for a Happier, Healthier New Year
New Year resolutions sound like a great idea: a fresh year and a fresh start. So why do they often fail? Setting YourSelf up for failure At New Year, festive goodwill and New Year enthusiasm can entice us into making a multitude of overly ambitious resolutions, setting ourselves up to fail and often, give up completely on our goals. So let’s turn three popular, doomed-to-failure aspirations into realistic resolutions. More exerciSe Your resolution: I’ll go to Pilates, do my dance DVD and walk two miles every week! You didn’t manage any of these things every week last year - ask yourself why. Identify activities you enjoy and can most easily fit in a Better resolution: I’ll do at least an hour’s exercise every week. Weather too bad for walking? Missed Pilates? Resolve to do your exercise DVD instead. Anything else is a bonus. Better to do some exercise consistently than none. leSS alcohol Your resolution: “I won’t drink
on weekdays/at home/EVER AGAIN!” Recent research shows that even alcohol intake under the recommended limits of 2-3 units daily and 14 units per week increases your risk of many serious conditions, including dementia and some cancers, so reducing your intake is great – but tough if you’re a regular drinker. a Better resolution: Think about when and where you drink alcohol, and reduce your intake gradually. Try: Matching every alcoholic drink with a soft drink, or buying a large soft drink later in the evening to last until home time. Finding other ways to relax if you always have a drink on returning from work (or make it a Friday-only treat). Feeling you ‘need’ a drink is a warning sign; consider if you need to make changes in your work life. On alternate nights, swap that wine with dinner or beer with friends for low-alcohol or nonalcoholic versions. no SMoking Your resolution: “I smoke 30 a day, but I’m quitting for good at New Year!” It’s probably quicker to list conditions not aggravated or caused by smoking than to list those that are, and accepting you’re addicted to nicotine can be hard. But that twitchiness you
feel – the need for a cigarette to ‘calm your nerves’ - is nicotine withdrawal, which can occur very quickly. This can make smoking hard to kick, particularly for moderate or heavy smokers. While a few successfully go ‘cold turkey’, gradually reducing your nicotine intake is the most reliable and angst-free method. a Better resolution: Try the options below and keep going until you find a strategy that works. Visit your GP. They can prescribe some nicotine replacement products and refer you to counselling. You can also buy nicotine replacement products; experiment and see what works best for you. If you don’t already, make yourself smoke outside; it takes more effort. Toxins from your cigarette linger in the air (second-hand smoke) and settle on surfaces, where they’re re-released (third-hand smoke), so you’ll be improving the health of housemates and visitors too. Smoke to a timed schedule and gradually increase the time between cigarettes. Even if you smoke 25 a day and only drop one daily cigarette per fortnight, you’ll still be a nonsmoker in under a year. Keep nicotine but eliminate cigarette toxins like cyanide and arsenic by swapping to e-cigarettes or vaporisers. ‘Resolution’ has an array o scientific and historical meanings, including ‘reduction to a simpler form’. So keep your resolutions simple – and realistic!

Mindset - The power of Positive Thinking never be an easy or overnight process but by making small changes, it will become easier.
Lindsey Allen, an awardwinning fitness instructor, explores the benefits of a more positive mindset in Part 2 of her advice feature. You have the power to help change your mindset - you need to see the power that you hold in your hands. The power to be whoever you want to be! You may be reading this and thinking ʻyeah rightʼ and if you do, then stop reading now, because you really do! I am not always positive but I also donʼt expect myself to be but I do accept that the power of my thinking plays a massive role on my life! One tiny negative thought can snowball a persons day, week, month, year. Teaching yourself self-love
goes a long way to allowing yourself to re-frame your mindset into a positive one. Think you canʼt?! Divorce - an opportunity to start again! House move an opportunity to meet new people! Redundancy - a chance to re-think your career and possibly chase a childhood dream! Even if the situation is not great, there will ALWAYS be a chance to grow and learn from that experience. Nearly everyone I meet has suffered some kind of trauma, marital split, abuse, domestic violence, familial divisions. To each, itʼs the worst thing that could happen to them. Are we really content to let them live their lives being controlled by the past or do we want to show them how to set themselves free? Changing your mindset will
It is important to recognise that negative thoughts drain you of energy quicker than anything. They are exhausting and they stop you from being in the present moment because you are focusing on that negative thought which more often than not, is in the past. The more you give in to your negative thoughts, the stronger they become and itʼs harder to stop them in their tracks. Think of a snowball, as it rolls along the ground it picks up snow getting larger and faster with every roll. Now imagine it rolling towards you. Negativity is not a good feeling, is it? Negative thoughts are hard to stop once that snowball has started rolling. It is far easier said than done to try and move that negative thought into a positive one but if you donʼt, you are going to go down a painful and unnecessary path. Part 3 of Lindsey Allen’s Mindset advice will follow in the next issue.

Bergen Norway By Solange Hando
Nestling between the seven mountains and a sprinkling of islands in the North Sea, Norway’s second city is one of the prettiest towns on the southwest coast. Bright, colourful, it shines whatever the weather, old and new jostling side by side, just steps away from the scenic wonders of a pristine natural world. Laced with inlets and bays, Bergen is the gateway to the fjords, the perfect base to catch a glimpse of this enticing world, maybe sailing for a few hours on Sognefjord, the longest and deepest, or Osterfjord encircling an island where myriad waterfalls tumble down the cliffs. It’s sheer magic, a hidden paradise which lingers in your mind long after you return to harbour. Highly rated by cruise ships and yachts, Bergen’s maritime vocation dates back to medieval times, enjoying its golden age from the 14th century onwards when the Hanseatic League brought trade and prosperity. oday the finely restored merchants’ houses are the city’s most iconic image, their wooden façades painted in vibrant colours, rising gable to gable along the old Bryggen wharf. It’s a world heritage site
and the most atmospheric part of town, with wooden alleyways festooned in rickety steps and overhanging galleries and craft shops tucked in every corner. Just minutes away at the water’s edge, stalls tempt visitors with succulent summer berries and reindeer sausages half a metre long, while the fish arket serves si le but delicious meals under the awnings. When the sun shines on a long summer’s day, restaurants spill out onto the cobbled quay and it feels almost Mediterranean. It’s easy to stroll around Bergen from the medieval fortress to the gleaming high street, from the tip of the peninsula to the esplanade leading down to the lake. Sculptures and fountains pop up here and there and sometimes the sound of violins drifts under the arcades, remembering the local virtuoso Ole Bull, or it could be the haunting echo of a Grieg melody. Both artists were born in Bergen. Meanwhile, in the elegant district above the old town, white weatherboard houses climb up the slopes along the steep meandering lanes or gather higgledy-piggledy in secluded courtyards. Roses
bloom in cottage gardens and the higher you go, the better the views. Now and then the funicular railway makes its way up the mountain where you look across the city and fjords to the islands in the distance. Up there, rambling trails head through forests and heathland dotted with lakes, rocks and cliffs rise above the treeline and when you reach the top of Rundemanen at 568 metres, mountains roll as far as you can see. In these highlands haunted by mysterious trolls, you could encounter a wolverine, a lynx or a bear but visitors who come to see the city lights do not stray far after dark. But according to a local saying, ‘you haven’t been to Bergen if you haven’t been to Ulriken,’ at 643 metres the highest of the seven mountains. As visitors step out of the cable car, many linger on the viewing platform, overwhelmed by the panorama and the cool mountain air, but when the last shreds of mist melt away, the more adventurous head for the summit strewn with boulders and rocks. There are bogs and ponds, wild rabbits, mossy grass, but in this wild open land the mountains are as stunning as the city glistening far below, garlanded in fjords and islands.

New Year, New Tech, New You The gadgets that can help you reach your New Year goals
It’s that time of year again: gym owners rub their hands together in glee as the entire world makes New Year resolutions to sort out their health, their fitness or their looks ut while many of those gym memberships will turn out to be expensive mistakes as the initial fervour fades, a few wellchosen gadgets could keep you on the right track all year round ealth and fitness tracking is huge in technology right now, largely because it’s still a relatively untapped market: even the best-known fitnesstracking smartwatch, the Apple Watch, has only sold a few illion units hat eans there are lenty o fir s ho ing to win over everyone from casual dieters to ountain e lorers For the latter category, outdoor watches such as the Casio Smart Outdoor Watch are built to ilitary s ecifications or toughness and deliver accurate GPS, as well as recording your hikes and cli bs that sounds like overkill, and for most of us it probably is, the £170 Garmin Vivosmart HR+ is one of the best all-round fitness trackers for monitoring your heart rate, recording your activity and tracking t s retty, too - and the isfit ay is rettier
still, resembling a bracelet rather than a watch t s hal the price of the Garmin and offers good all-round fitness-tracking eatures ver we ll see a lot more wearable trackers, many of them odd: fancy a Welt, a sensor-enabled belt that tracks your steps for as long as you keep your trousers on? If you’re more concerned about what you’re putting into your body than what you’re sweating out, smartphone apps offer all kinds of diet and lifestyle tracking - and increasingly those apps tie in with platforms such as Apple ealth, i hings ealth ate, Microsoft Health, Jawbone and any ore lat or s are designed to enable data sharing from multiple trackers, so for example Apple’s Health app can get data not just from the iPhone it’s on but also from the Apple Watch, from wireless scales and from a wide range of wired and wireless health- onitoring devices you haven’t already committed to a particular health-tracking platform, it’s a very good idea to check out sites such as areable co to find out the latest news and rumours about the di erent anu acturers For example, at the time of writing Microsoft has announced
the end o its icroso t and tracking device, so if you buy one now you might not be able to get a repair for it or a re lace ent one i it breaks t also means that if you want to u grade ro a and , there won t be a and to ulfil your wishes Gadgets don’t just help you when you’re exercising or watching what you eat hey can help you when you’re aslee too any wearable devices such as the Fitbit la e and Surge, Fossil Marshal, ebble i e and A le atch (via third-party apps) can monitor your sleep, gathering data to help you identify the triggers of a poor night’s sleep and the best times to set the alarm for, and the best times to head up the wooden hill to ed ordshire he data recorded does vary from device to device and some are more practical than others - wearing a smartwatch in bed all night means you’ll have to charge it in the morning - but the insights can be use ul

Pager Turners Spring may be just around the corner, but there’s still plenty of temptation to lock the cold, dark winter out and curl up with a book. From gripping psychological thrillers to folklore inspired tales, these books will keep you turning the pages late into the night. The Silkworm – Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling) Private Investigator Cormoran Strike is back. This time he’s been asked to find a issing writer. But when the writer turns up dead, his wife, Cormoran’s client, comes under suspicion. Are the clues to the real killer hidden in the writer’s last, unpublished book? A gripping crime novel with echoes of hard-boiled American classics, The Silkworm has plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. The Bear and The Nightingale – Katherine Arden In the wilds of Russia, folklore and fairy tales do battle with the Church for the villagers’ hearts and minds. As an enigmatic young priest starts to turn his flock away ro their centuriesold traditions, the spirit guardians of the homes lose their strength, and darkness threatens to take hold. The only one who might be able to save the villagers is the girl they’ve turned against. Lyrical and beautiful, The Bear and The Nightingale is captivating from the very first age Hygge – Charlotte Abrahams The Danish concept of hygge has taken the UK by storm. From candlelight and snuggly
blankets, to dinner with friends, hygge is about wellbeing, cosiness and appreciating the little things. Charlotte Abrahams talks us through how she’s embraced a more ‘hyggelig’ way of life and what it’s meant for her. There are no hard rules, no demands to cut back on this or stop doing that, just a focus on being kinder to ourselves, celebrating the ordinary and enjoying a simpler life. The Girl Before – JP Delaney At first glance ne Folgate Street seems like a renter’s dream. Emma certainly thinks so, as does Jane, several months later. But the minimalist house comes with some very strict rules, and as Jane learns of Emma’s death, she starts to wonder whether there’s a darker side to the landlord’s stipulations. A tense psychological thriller, The Girl Before looks set to become one of 2017’s most talked about books. The Phantom Tree – Nicola Cornick Alison is stuck in modern day Britain, hundreds of years after she was born. Mary is back in Tudor England. But only Mary can reveal what happened to Alison’s son all those years
ago. As Alison tries to follow the clues Mary left behind, she uncovers more than she was e ecting istorical fiction with a twist, this is a must for fans of Kate Morton and Barbara Erskine. The Lauras – Sara Taylor When Ma bundles 13 year old Alex out of bed and into the car one night, neither knows just how long their road trip is going to last. Ma takes Alex across America, revisiting the places that shaped her as she was growing up, from foster homes to semi-derelict squats. As their journey progresses, she tells Alex about the ‘Lauras’ – the girls and women who played key roles in her early life. Enthralling. Three Daughters of Eve - Elif Shafak Peri spent her childhood negotiating the distance between her parents. Now she acts the part of a dutiful, Turkish housewife. But when a half-forgotten photograph reminds her of long ago freedoms, Peri struggles to keep up the charade. She can’t help but look back to her days as a student in ord, the choices she made, the friends she left behind and the scandal that tore everything apart.
