Food News A Fresh Approach at The Wildmoor Oak There is always plenty going on at The Wildmoor Oak. There is a Quiz Night every Tuesday, at 9pm. The hugely popular Caribbean Party Night takes place on the last Thursday of every month. And a new mid-month Friday music night has also been added to the events calender this year, with music from a different decade each month. The Wildmoor Oak Pub and Restaurant, in Bromsgrove, enjoyed a makeover at the start of 2017. During a week long closure, the interior was redecorated to create a fresh, more contemporary look, whilst retaining the much loved rustic feel with its wooden tables and rural themed accessories. A new ʻsnugʼ area has also been created where you can relax with a drink from the Oak Bar. A new general manager, Grant Upton, was appointed in February to head up the Front of House team. His past experience includes managing 4 and 5 star hotels and he plans to bring this high level of service to The Wildmoor Oak.

Customers dining at the venue can choose from the main menu which features traditional British Classics as well as International Cuisine - which includes Chef Lorenzoʼs award winning, authentic Caribbean dishes. The Specials board has also been re-instated, due to customer feedback. Why not treat mum on Motherʼs Day with a meal at The Wildmoor Oak? The 3 course set menu is just £21.95 per person. Pre-booking is essential. For more details call The Wildmoor Oak on 0121 453 2696 or visit www.wildmooroak.com

Hobbies The Sky’s No Limit For Amateur Photographers By Kate McLelland Ever since the BBC launched its ‘Weather Watchers’ feature in November 2015, the work of the UK’s amateur photographers has enjoyed unparalleled public exposure, with images contributed by keen volunteers appearing on our TV screens morning, noon and night.

which means the image you see through the viewfinder or display screen is the same as the one that will appear on the final i age he lighter, less ul y irrorless ca era (also known as a compact system ca era is eco ing ore popular.

According to the BBC’s Head of Weather, Liz Howell, the goal of Weather Watchers – launched as part of the s flagship Make it Digital initiative - was to create a new, crowdsourced weather club that would “enable people across the UK to help tell the story of the great British weather hile it has definitely achieved that aim, it has also showcased the talent of Britain’s amateur photographers in an unexpected way.

There are many, many websites available to guide you towards the best purchase. If you are still finding it hard to a e a decision after your research, you could drop into your local camera shop for some face-toface advice.

So what do you need to become an amateur photographer? Which camera? When you start to shop for cameras, you may be confused by terms such as ‘SLR’ or ‘DSLR’ and ‘mirrorless cameras’. ‘SLR’ stands for ‘single lens refle is, of course, used for a digital single lens refle ca era oth types use a mirror between the lens and the fil (or digital i age sensor ,

What subjects excite me? Before you stock up on expensive equipment, it may be helpful to decide on the kind of photography that really interests you. Wildlife shots? Portraits of people? Urban and rural landscapes? Macro images? Once you’ve decided, you’ll be a le to focus on the specific items of equipment you need – for example, would a tripod be useful for shooting in low light without flash ill you need a telephoto lens for long distance shots? How about a wideangle lens, for photographing a high building or an expansive landscape? inal finish You may also want to think

about how your images will be used. Will you print them as hard copies and create a portfolio of your work, or maybe share them online, using an image hosting website such as Flikr? If you decide to go digital rather than use fil , you will pro a ly need to download some photo editing software. This can be expensive, but don’t worry if you can’t afford products at the top end of the market. You can download free software such as GIMP, Paint.NET or Photoscape that perform most of the functions you’ll need, without adding to your budget. How do I learn? There are many ways to develop the skills you need. You could take an adult education course, join a local camera club, buy a ‘how to’ book or simply look online for sites that offer advice to beginners. Of course, it may be some ti e efore you feel confident enough to share your work with a wider audience. Then it will be up to you whether you become a BBC Weather Watcher, an entrant for ‘Amateur Photographer of the Year’ or someone who simply loves to share their work with family and friends.

Beauty Mother’s Little Helpers by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

Time, space and sanity savers to see you through spring If it’s been ‘one of those’ mornings, and you just haven’t had a minute to wash your hair, a dry shampoo can come in very handy. Philip Kingsley’s One More Day Dry Shampoo is a light spray that keeps excess oil at bay. Unlike some dry shampoos, this one doesn’t feel sticky or leave a powdery residue. It also helps to keep your scalp happy, so ini ises fla ing and irritation. And, as an added bonus, it gives your hair some extra oomph and helps it to hold a style better. Priced at £14.50, the dry shampoo is available from www.philipkingsley. co.uk. I do love a good multi-tasker, especially one that smells as good as Darphin’s Revitalising Oil. I keep a bottle by my desk for a quick daily mini-facial. I also use it as a body oil, straight after a bath. It feels lovely and leaves skin much smoother. Finally, I work a few drops of the oil through my hair when it’s damp, to add a bit of extra shine. A little goes a long way, so the Revitalising Oil is actually not bad value for money at £25. Available from Space NK, House of Fraser, John Lewis and www.darphin.co.uk.

Bee Good’s NectaPerfecta Beautifying Mask is another multi-tasker, and top of my wish list at the moment. It’s packed with 15 natural ingredients, including beeswax, honey, bilberry fruit extract, jojoba and wheatgerm oil, and can be used from head to toe. Use it as a face mask, weekly scalp treatment, or as an intensive treatment for dry patches on elbows, heels and hands. It can help to lock in moisture, improve elasticity, ini ise fine lines and sti ulate cell renewal £39.95 from Waitrose or www.beegood.co.uk. Love trying new products? You might want to think about signing up for a mystery beauty box. Priced from around £9 per box, they re filled with a selection of luxury beauty goodies, from makeup to moisturiser, and usually worth at least twice what you’ve paid. or ally, you won t find out what you’re getting until the box arrives, but contents can often be personalised to suit your skin’s needs and your personal tastes. Beauty boxes are delivered to your house monthly, and you can choose whether to sign up for one, three, six or 12 months. Try www.glossybox.co.uk, www.lovelula.com, www.birchbox.co.uk, www. lookfantastic.com and www.notanotherbill.com. If you don’t have time for body lotion, the new Dr Do Good In-Shower Moisturiser could be for you. Just spray it on in the shower and rinse. Simple. There’s no need to massage it in, and you don’t need to wait for it to soak in before you get dressed. It leaves skin feeling soft and hydrated, and is ideal for popping in your gym bag. Ingredients include e tracts of five superfoods, including Vitamin Arich carrot. £15, www.drdogood. co.uk.

Wheezes and Sneezes: How to Tackle Hay Fever of steroid nasal spray users were using them correctly in the study).

Hay fever or seasonal allergies can be caused by the pollen of numerous trees, grasses or plants and it affects around 18 million people in the UK. Diagnosis If you’re unsure it’s hay fever causing your symptoms, see your GP. They may refer you for an allergen test to determine whether you’re allergic to pollen or other organic material such as animal hair or dust mites. a skin prick test only tests for the most common allergens, so it may be inconclusive. Your skin is pricked and exposed to a tiny dose of allergen - it should react if you’re allergic. a blood test for the Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody, produced when you encounter pollen, may also be used. symptoms Symptoms can range from mild to life-impacting: itchy and/or runny nose sneezing irritated, itchy, watery eyes TreaTing Hay Fever How you treat your hay fever will depend on the type and severity of your symptoms. Research by Allergy UK in 2014 showed that 62% of sufferers found their current medication ineffective – yet they failed to seek better alternatives or didn’t use it properly (only 14%

Ask a pharmacist for advice on the right medication and alternatives if it’s ineffective. Ensure you follow doctor’s, pharmacist’s and manufacturer’s instructions carefully. See your GP if over the counter treatments aren’t working, or you develop sinus or ear infections. oral Medications (Tablets and Liquids) antihistamines block the action of histamine, a chemical triggered by allergen exposure, to reduce or stop your allergic reaction. They may not relieve a blocked nose but are usually effective against other symptoms. As a preventative, they work best if taken regularly and started in advance of high pollen count periods. They can also be taken as required when symptoms begin. Some older antihistamines (e.g. chlorpheniramine, known as Piriton) make you drowsy and can affect your ability to do your job or drive. However, most people now choose newer, nonsedating antihistamines (e.g. Loratadine). steroids are only usually used short-term if other medications aren’t working or if your hay fever causes or aggravates asthma. They reduce symptoms y reducing infla ation nasal sprays and Drops Decongestant nasal sprays unblock your nose but can cause rebound congestion after a few days, so only use them for occasional relief or as an additional treatment on days

when symptoms are severe. steroid nasal sprays or drops prevent and reduce infla ation in the nasal lining and can help relieve eye itchiness too. antihistamine nasal sprays relieve an itchy nose and reduce sneezing. eyedrops Antihistamine eyedrops reduce itchiness and watering. inhalers and injections If seasonal allergies cause or exacerbate asthma, you may be offered a steroid inhaler and/or a ‘reliever’, such as salbutamol (‘Ventolin’). Business News Broad Street DIY Wins National Award

[L - R] Clive Myrie (TV News Reporter), Brian Warren and Lisa Childs (Broad Street DIY Ltd) and David Hibbert (Joint Managing Director, Stax Trade Centres)

Bromsgrove based Broad Street DIY joined hundreds of leading DIY and garden suppliers, wholesalers and independent and multiple retailers at the 2017 DIY Week Awards on Tuesday, February 7. The winners of the industryʼs most prestigious accolades were revealed to a packed audience at the event, which took place at the National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham, during the Spring Fair. Broad Street DIY took home the highly coveted DIY Week Retailer of the Year title. It was awarded by a stellar line-up of judges, who said that

DIY Weekʼs acting editor Jenny Wonnacott commented: “The DIY Week Awards are about putting the spotlight on and celebrating excellence in retailing right across the DIY and garden industry. Our 2017 winners impressed a strong panel of judges and are fantastic examples of outstanding retail businesses that are ʻswitched onʼ and continue to drive the market and keep our industry exciting.”

Broad Street DIY had demonstrated a clear understanding of their customer demographics, and of the trends which affect their business. The judges also said: “They identified the decline of ʻDIY dadʼ, for instance, and the loss of father-tochild DIY skills it implied. And they responded creatively, organising ladiesʼ nights which are all about product education and building confidence. There is a maturity about their management that is far beyond what you would expect in a business of its size – these guys are really punching above their weight.”

Publication and Event Manager Joanne Bamber added: “A highly coveted DIY Week Award is a real quality mark for retailers and this award tells customers that they offer unrivalled products and service. Congratulations to Broad Street DIY.”

Home & Interiors Refresh Your Home For Spring shelves and light fittings, shampooed rugs, washed loose covers and curtains and taken duvets to the launderette? To say nothing of cleaning mirrors and windows – and scrunched-up newspaper and white vinegar will give them a wonderful sparkle.

As our gardens start to grow and blossom fills the trees, it’s time to think about refreshing and re-energising our homes ready for a stylish spring. Clear the clutter There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned tidy up! Heavy winter duvets, furry throws and cable-knit hot water bottles can all be stored out of the way, while at the same time this is a good opportunity to go through shelves and cupboards and get rid of anything you no longer need. If it’s broken, mend it or throw it away; don’t let worn out, unusable and unnecessary items take up space. Clean house After clearing space, you will probably notice that some of your house could do with a deep clean. How good will you feel when you have washed down the front door, wiped

Have a brush with paint Has your paintwork seen better days? Perhaps windows need sanding and repainting, or door frames need touch-ups where they’ve had knocks and bashes? Or maybe a whole room could do with a makeover? Painting is a relatively quick and inexpensive DIY job that creates an overall impression going above and beyond the effort involved. Introduce colour Now’s the time to ditch dark winter shades and get fresh with spring-like colour. Yellow, blue and green are all associated with spring – and Pantone’s colour of the year is gorgeous ‘Greenery’, described as ‘a fresh and zesty yellowgreen shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew’. Use with plenty of bright white for a really clean, fresh look. Include a dash of pattern Your backdrop of pale spring colours is perfect for adding pops of pattern to make an impact. Chevrons, triangles and geometrics in general (especially if they have a tribal feel) are still current, as well as tropicals, textures (think chunky knits or grassy weaves), graphic

By Katherine Sorrell botanicals such as ferns and leaves and the natural patterns of marble and stone. Up your game with accessories Replace old accessories with on-trend items such as cushions and throws, duvet covers, vases, prints, small storage containers, mirrors, clocks, table lamps and plants. You don’t have to spend a fortune to overhaul your look dramatically. Add some scent Instead of artificial air fresheners, use natural wax scented candles. Alternatively, try reed diffusers with essential oils, or simply arrange locally sourced, scented flowers (those from abroad don’t tend to smell so good). And, try to dry laundry in the sunshine outdoors – you can’t beat that beautiful fresh smell. Bring the outdoors in Now the warmer weather is here, open the windows and get some air circulating around your home. It might even be warm enough to sit outside, so think about pressure washing your patio, scrubbing up your barbecue and cleaning down your outdoor furniture. After all, it’s not that long until summer… Main Image: Artificial bulb jar £5; faceted vase (set of three) £12; short botanic herb jug £12 (small) and £25 (large); green glass tea light holder £5 (large) and £4 (small); fern glass tea light holder £10.50: all from The Contemporary Home, 02392 469400; tch.net.

Lifestyle News Mindset - Banish Negative Thinking Smile Smiling is one of those feel good things that we can all do and we should all do more of. Smiling really does improve your mood and as an added bonus, it helps to alleviate stress.

Lindsey Allen, an awardwinning fitness instructor, explores the benefits of a more positive mindset in Part 3 of her advice feature. Below are some of the things I learnt to set me free from negative thinking. I am not saying all of this will work for everyone but I am pretty sure that some will work for some and that has to be a good thing, right? Meditation Whenever I say the word meditation I am met with gasps, sighs, eyes rolling to the ceiling! Why are we so afraid of meditation? Call it relaxation, yoga, tai chi, whatever you want. To me, meditation is just quiet time with myself and my thoughts.

It is an opportunity for me to truly connect with myself. It doesnʼt have to be 60 minutes, crikey, that would put me off and I enjoy it! Meditation is simply an opportunity for you to be with you. It can be a few minutes in the shower deep breathing and allowing your body to be still, yoga, listening to music, reading your favourite book. Avoid getting so caught up in trying to meditate that you forget what mediation is. It is a private, quiet practise that can mean anything that you want it to mean if it means time for you that leaves you calm and peaceful. It doesnʼt have to mean sitting in the lotus position, chanting with your thumbs and index fingers pressed! Although do that if you want to!

Also, smiling at others more often than not, involves you getting a smile back - get out there and smile :) Negative versus Positive Re-frame how you think things. Instead of "I wonʼt have time to get everything done tomorrow" change it to "I have my list, I will get what has to be done, achieved, anything else is a bonus". Your Life - Your Responsibility Stop playing the victim - it achieves nothing! Your life may be hard, events may have been unfair but how is playing the victim going to help or change anything? Accept and move on. Empower yourself and remember how you live your life is down to you. Part 4 of Lindsey Allen’s Mindset advice will follow in the next issue.

Parenting What To Do If You Think Your Child Is Being Bullied by Kate Duggan While we all like to think that our child will tell us if something is wrong, there are lots of reasons they might keep quiet about being bullied. They may feel ashamed, or worried that you’ll be disappointed in them. They may have been threated to keep quiet. Or they could be concerned about what you’ll do. You can’t rely on your child to tell you in words what’s happening, but you can look for any signs, such as: A reluctance to attend school. Acting more withdrawn, anxious or moody. Clothing becoming torn or dirty more frequently. Items going missing. An increase in bruises or scratches. The above signs may not indicate bullying. But if you are concerned, talk to your child. Try to choose a time when neither of you need to do anything else, when you’re both well-rested, well-fed and in a good ood our child ay find it easier if just one parent talks to them to start with, so they don’t feel outnumbered. What should I do? The key thing is to listen to your child, take their concerns seriously and make sure they

know the bullying is not their fault. Comments such as ‘You need to learn to stand up for yourself,’ will not help your child, but may mean they don’t trust you to help them in the future. Your child also shouldn’t be expected to change their appearance, hobbies or interests to placate a bully. It’s certainly tempting to go into the school ‘all guns blazing’. You will need to speak to the school, but try to do it calmly and in private. Speak to your child’s teacher or form tutor first, ut if you re not happy with the response make an appointment with the head of year or headmaster. You’ll want to be able to give details of the bullying, ideally including times, dates and names, if your child will provide them. All schools should have an anti-bullying policy, so ask to see it. You may want to ask for a written response, detailing how the school plans to address the bullying. Most schools should work with you to improve the situation, but if you don’t feel that your concerns are being taken seriously, you may need to take the matter further, to the Chair of Governors, or the police. What if my child is being

bullied through their phone? Home should be a safe haven, but with the advent of mobile phones and social media, bullying can go on around the clock. Cyber-bullying includes texts and phone calls, the sharing of photos, social media comments and more. It’s best not to respond to any messages, but do save them, or take screenshots as proof. Your child could block the number of the bully, and unfollow or unfriend them. You can also speak to the phone service provider’s malicious calls team, or the social network itself. If the bullying is being done by someone at your child’s school, make an appointment to speak to a teacher. The school should be able to offer support, even when the bullying is taking place off school grounds. Threats of violence may need reporting to the police. Where can I go for advice? There are several websites and helplines that can offer both you and your child support and advice. These include: www.bullying.co.uk 0808 800 2222 www.childline.org.uk 0800 1111 www.bullybusters.org.uk 0800 169 6928

Finance It May Not Be Too Late To Make A Claim For Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) y nn aldon They told you the loan would be more expensive if you didn’t sign up for PPI.

According to ‘Which?’ the banks have written to 5.5 million customers, letting them know they might have been mis-sold PPI and offering three years in which to make a claim. Although some of these letters were sent in 2013, people are still successfully claiming PPI from banks and other lenders. potential final deadline of une 2019 has also been announced by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). If this is confir ed, it offers plenty of ti e to write to lenders and recover the money that should never have been taken from you. Could you have been missold PPi? PPI could have been mis-sold to you in a number of ways, including these scenarios: You were pressured by the salesperson, or told it was compulsory. You were self-employed, unemployed, or retired when the policy was taken out. You had a pre-existing medical problem. A clear explanation was not given of how much PPI you were going to pay, or if it was included in the total loan quote. You already had cover in place within another policy – life insurance, for example. You were not informed of the ‘cooling-off’ period.

ContaCting the lender If you no longer have your loan agreement, write to or phone the company concerned. Many larger financial organisations will be able to tell you over the phone whether or not you’ve been sold Payment Protection Insurance. You can also request a copy of your original agreement. Some companies can deal with your entire claim by phone, or online. The Financial Ombudsman Service also has an online questionnaire, and allows you to upload any supporting documents. Otherwise, you should print it off and sent it by recorded delivery after taking a copy for yourself. When the ComPany rePlies you receive a positive response Regular premiums Credit cards and mortgages generally had a regular PPI premium attached, rather than one single premium. If this was the case, you should receive a refund for the premiums paid. If interest had been added, this amount should also be refunded. Single premiums Single PPI premiums were often paid in relation to personal loans and finance agree ents ow much you receive depends on whether the loan is still in force: If your loan is ongoing, the lender will calculate the monthly amount you should have been paying (minus the PPI), and this will be deducted from the total amount

outstanding. If the loan has been repaid in full, you’ll receive a refund for the amounts you paid. The lender should also calculate a new rede ption figure as though the PPI had never been paid, and repay the difference between this and the amount you actually repaid on redemption. if the Claim is rejeCted Should there be no response from the lender within eight weeks, they reject your claim, or you are unhappy with the refunded amount, you can contact the Financial Ombudsman Service for a decision. This must be done within six months of the lender’s final response to you It may take up to two years to reach a decision, and any interim offers made by the lender will be forwarded to you. If you re not happy with the final outcome, you can request that an official o uds an reviews your case for a second opinion. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/ business-36950803 http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/reclaim/ppi-loaninsurance#how http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/ money/cardsloans/article1606455/Reclaim-PPI-premiumspayment-protection-insurance. html https://www.fca.org.uk/consumers/ payment-protection-insurance/ claim-mis-sold-ppi http://www.which.co.uk/consumerrights/advice/i-think-ive-been-missold-ppi-what-should-i-do http://www.which.co.uk/consumerrights/advice/how-to-reclaim-missold-ppi
