Sweet Potato & Chick Pea Curry Serves 4

Ready in 45 minutes

A quick and easy vegetarian dish full of Indian flavour. If you don’t have all the spices just use 1-2 tbsp medium curry paste. Serve with boiled basmati rice or warmed naan breads, if liked.

Ingredients: • 1 - 2 tbsp vegetable oil • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 3cm piece fresh root ginger, peeled and grated • 1 large onion, peeled and chopped • 1 aubergine, cubed • 2 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp ground turmeric • 2 tsp ground coriander • 1/2 tsp hot chilli powder • 3 medium-sized sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed

Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the garlic, ginger and onion over a medium heat for about 5 minutes until light golden. Stir in the aubergine and fry for a further 2 minutes. Add all the spices to the pan and cook, stirring, for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the sweet potatoes, the passata and 150ml water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes or until the sweet potato is tender and the sauce has thickened.

• 1 tsp garam masala

Stir in the chick peas and garam masala and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Simmer for a further few minutes. Serve in warmed bowls garnished with chopped coriander.

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper

TIP

• Freshly chopped coriander, to garnish

For a chunkier sauce use a 400g can of chopped tomatoes and add 250ml water.

• 500g carton passata (sieved tomatoes) • 400g can chick peas, drained and rinsed

Migraine Awareness Week: It’s Not ‘Just’ A Headache Types and Symptoms Migraine with aura (10-30% of migraines). Neurological

Migraine is one of the WHO’s ‘most disabling lifetime conditions’. Yet it’s often poorly understood and trivialised. Migraine Awareness Week, from 4th–10th September, aims to change that. What is Migraine? Migraine isn’t ‘just a bad headache’. Suffered by three times as many women as men, it’s a complex set of symptoms often including headache, triggered by physiological changes yet with no known ‘cause’. However, triggers have • Stress or excitement – although some migraines start when stress is relieved. • Hunger/lack of food, causing • • • • • •

levels. Dehydration. Sleep (too little or too much). Change of routine. Alcohol. Caffeine. Prolonged screen time – due to

muscle tension. • Hormonal changes in women. • Environmental factors – changes in temperature, humidity and altitude, loud lights, smells. • Jaw tension, coughing, unaccustomed exertion or illness. Most experts now discount tyramine, found in soft cheeses and wine, as a trigger.

lasting less than an hour, normally followed by a headache. Most common symptoms are tunnel vision, double vision, blind spots or temporary sparkling/coloured spots, stars or zigzags. However, some people also experience weakness on one side or partial paralysis, dizziness, vertigo, numbness or tingling, disturbance to speech, hearing and memory, fear or confusion, and fainting, particularly if they suffer from migraine with brainstem aura and hemiplegic migraine, which are rare subtypes. Migraine without aura: (70-90% of migraines). Attacks usually last 4-72 hours if untreated. The headache is usually a throbbing pain, often on one side, which worsens on exertion. It’s frequently accompanied by nausea and sometimes vomiting, diarrhoea and light or sound sensitivity. Menstrual Migraine (usually without aura) affects fewer than 10% of women. Experts believe it’s triggered by falling oestrogen levels and/or prostaglandin release during the menstrual cycle. It normally occurs on the three days during, a period, and often lasts longer than other types. Preventing Migraine Avoiding triggers, following a regular routine, and eating, sleeping and exercising healthily can help. Your GP may recommend preventative medications such as topiramate

and propranolol for severe and/or frequent migraines. Treating Migraine Take medications swiftly, as the stomach often stops working • Over-the-counter painkillers. • containing pain relief and an anti-emetic that alleviates nausea and vomiting and aids painkiller absorption. • medications, which reverse the blood vessel dilation thought to cause migraine. For menstrual migraine, ask about hormonal contraceptives, oestrogen supplements and mefenamic painkiller that can also alleviate heavy periods). • Botox injections – which may work by interrupting the pain feedback pathway to the brain. • Resting in a darkened room or having a nap. See Your GP if you’ve never had migraine before or suffer from migraine more than 5 days in a month, even if your pain is under control with medication. You may require a preventative medicine. Seek Emergency Medical Advice • Paralysis or weakness in either arm or face. • Slurred/ garbled speech. • A sudden agonising headache. • Headache with a high temperature, stiff neck, mental confusion, seizures, double vision and rash. Beauty Holding onto Summer by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

This month we’re making the most of the last of the rays with some summer-inspired beauty finds. With its fresh, citrusy scent of mandarin and grapefruit, warmed by sandalwood, Weleda’s Agrume Jardin de Vie fragrance conjures up images of heady Tuscan nights. And at just £19.95 for 50ml, you can spritz it on whenever you’re missing your sun lounger. Post-holiday blues? Weleda’s Grenade Jardin de Vie contains notes of neroli and davana, both of which are believed to help lift the spirits fragrance in Weleda’s collection, Rose Jardin de Vie, is a softly romantic mix of rose, geranium and ylang ylang. www.weleda.co.uk If you’re lucky enough to book a last minute break away, there are still some great travel kits on the market. Neal’s Yard Remedies brought out their Limited Edition Travel Kit in July, so there may still be the odd one left on the shelf.

The kit contains a refreshing White Tea Facial Mist and indulgent Wild Rose Beauty Balm, amongst other mini products. If, like me, you love a long soak in a hotel bath, you might want to treat yourself to an Olverum Bath Oil Travel Set, £16. The bath oil is formulated with fragrant essential oils specially chosen to help you relax, destress and unwind. Each of the three bottles contains enough bath oil for three separate soaks. Pick your set up from Harvey Nichols, Fenwick or www.Olverum.com. A face serum can help your skin to recover from the drying effects of too much sun, chlorine and air conditioning. This month I’ve been trying What Skin Needs’ Hydrating Facial Serum. A blend of plant extracts and seed oils, it’s packed with antioxidants, and leaves my skin feeling softer and more hydrated. The main active ingredient, plantolin, proven to soothe, renew

While the serum is an oil, rather than a lotion, it does absorb quickly and doesn’t leave your skin feeling greasy. £17.99, www.whatskinneeds.co.uk. Bobbi Brown’s new Sunset Pink collection is apparently inspired by ‘the incredible twilight glow of Telluride skies at sunset’. Launched in July, the collection includes highlighting powders, gel eyeliners, lip glosses, cheek tints and cream eyeshadows. I’ve been trying the eyeshadow, £19.50, which comes in four very wearable shades, and is a dream to apply.

Lindsey Allen’s Guide to Stress & Weight Loss In today’s stressful society we are ‘plugged in’ most of the time. Think about the many electrical appliances in your home that you use on a daily basis! Mobile, lap top, MP3, tablet, DVD, TV, microwave, washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer, Nintendo, Xbox. Do you really think your body does not pick up on all this electrical interference? You could not be more wrong! Your adrenal glands take a lot of notice. Have you ever thought about having a day away from technology? Maybe you think you canʼt? Do me a favour; try it, just for a day. I did it a little while ago and I absolutely loved it and this is from someone who gets accused of being surgically attached to my phone! Consider slowing down, pacing yourself almost. Look at it in terms of restoring your balance, your equilibrium. You may think that by being constantly on the go, you will lose weight, but in truth, the opposite is true. When stress levels are high and our adrenals are working overtime, we will stay in a perpetuating cycle of gaining weight.

When we have trouble sleeping, this also affects our weight gain and weight loss. If your sleep patterns are disrupted then this affects your circadian rhythms, this in turn affects cortisol which causes irregular sleep patterns. Ideally be in bed by 10pm, asleep by 10.30pm. Aim for 8 hours sleep although not all of us need this. Exercise is a powerful tool - not just in the battle for weight loss. Exercise is a positive stress that our adrenal glands respond well to. However, you shouldnʼt train if you are already exhausted, give your body the rest it craves and donʼt over stress it, but donʼt use this as an excuse not to exercise! I always recommend a daily stress busting stroll. Make having fun a priority - the benefits are endless! We seem to be rapidly losing the ability to just get out and have fun, be daft just for the sake of it. Laughing and enjoyment are essential aspects of life and a terrific way to relax. Something for Everyone at Artrix this Autumn Last year the popular venue hosted 254 live events, 177 screenings and 17 exhibitions. It was voted this yearʼs Best SmallTheatre/Arts Venue in Worcestershire in the Whatʼs On Readersʼ Awards. Artrix Arts Centre in Bromsgrove has just published its new autumn brochure and there are a few surprises in store. As well as the usual comedy, music and films there will be a new dramatic writing course, a second Drive-In cinema event at Halloween and a Comedy with Cake event with Birminghamʼs favourite comic housewife Mrs Barbara Nice. Hannah Phillips, Artrixʼs Director said “Weʼre offering an exciting and varied programme this season and there are plenty of new events and activities to enjoy. If you havenʼt been to Artrix before then come and see us, thereʼs something for everyone to enjoy.”

Now local people are being given the opportunity to be part of Artrixʼs success story. Volunteers are needed to join its dedicated volunteer workforce to help front of house with meeting and greeting, ushering audience members, taking collections in the foyer and bar work. Vicky Cieciora, Artrixʼs General Manager said “Last year we attracted over 72,000 visitors and we need more volunteers to help welcome our audience members, run the bar and assist us with our fundraising. Anyone who is interested in finding out more about volunteering at Artrix is invited to join us for our drop-in session on 12th September.”

Be part of Artrix’s success story

Artrixʼs volunteer drop-in session is taking place on 12th September from 6.00pm to 7.00pm.

When it first opened 11 years ago, Artrix Arts Centre had very little furniture, no proper kitchen and no bar.

For further details about Artrix and all forthcoming events visit www.artrix.co.uk

Black Over Bill’s Mother’s Mother’s A Tale of Birmingham Gangs

During World War Two, a onenight stand results in the birth of miracle twins, one white, and one black. Their destinies lead them to opposite sides of the law. Elsewhere in Birmingham, a violent child of Irish descent begins his journey towards leading the first Hells Angel Motorcycle Chapter in Britain. Police, gangsters, and bikers clash against the backdrop of Birmingham and the West Midlands in the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies, whilst the ominous presence of the Irish Republican Army pervades all. A fast-moving, violent and bloody tale of crime, Hells Angels, gangsters, terrorists and the police, incorporating real history and locations, imbued with Brummie language, police slang, music and culture of the times. The Authors: Michael Layton and Stephen Burrows, both Birmingham authors, are retired police officers with more than seventy yearsʼ experience of CID, and uniform policing, between them. In this novel, they draw upon their

knowledge and experiences, to provide a gritty, realistic and colourful story of gangs, violence and organised crime. Michael Layton QPM is the author/co-author of a number of other factual books dealing with football violence and police history including 'Hunting the Hooligans' and 'Birmingham's Front Line'.

Coughton Court

Dates for your diary: Sat 22 – Sun 30 Oct on open days, 11am – 3.30pm Join us for fiendish fun and frights on our spooky outdoor trail with take-home activities and crafts. £2.50

‘A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.’ The Throckmorton family rose garden at Coughton Court is recognised as one of the finest in the world and received the Award of Garden Excellence from The World Federation of Rose Societies in 2006 – the first British garden to have done so. The garden was designed by Christina Williams as a gift to her mother, Clare McLaren-Throckmorton, in 1996. It contains a breath taking number of rose varieties and the smells and sights of this beautiful garden during the summer months are not to be missed.

The gardens boast over 200 different varieties of roses - shrub, climbing and Sat 5 November, 6pm – rambling. These are found not just in the 11pm labyrinth but in many other areas as Exclusive black tie event with a champagne reception well.
