You, Your Bones and Osteoporosis • • • •
Worldwide, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men aged 50 and over will suffer an osteoporotic fracture. World Osteoporosis Day on 20th October aims to raise osteoporosis awareness. Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones weaken and decrease in density, increasing the likelihood of fractures. The high incidence of fractures in the over-50s is mostly due to weakened bones. Although osteoporosis can affect any bone, the wrists, hips and spine are the most commonly affected. Who is at risk? Women are generally at greater risk than men, as falling oestrogen levels during the menopause affect bone density. Women are at even higher risk if they: • Experience menopause or have a hysterectomy before age 45. • Over-exercise or diet, stopping their periods for more than six months. Other risk factors include: • Overactive thyroid or parathyroid glands. • Adrenal gland or pituitary gland disorders. • Family history of osteoporosis or hip fracture. • A BMI of 19 or less. • Long-term high-dose corticosteroid use (e.g. for arthritis or asthma).
Eating disorders. Smoking and heavy drinking. Rheumatoid arthritis. Conditions causing malabsorption problems (e.g. coeliac or Crohn’s disease). • Some breast and prostate cancer medications. • Long periods of inactivity (e.g. long-term bed rest). • In men, low testosterone levels. Preventing osteoPorosis Do: take regular exercise that includes weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening activities, which exert force on bones and stimulate growth. They’ll also making falls less likely. • Weight-bearing exercise: brisk walking, hiking, jogging, climbing stairs, rope skipping, aerobics or racquet sports. • Muscle-strengthening (resistance) exercise: weightresistance bands, weight machines, rising up on your toes and push-ups. include plenty of calcium, vitamin D and protein in your diet. Dairy foods are great sources of protein, calcium, Vitamin D and other vital minerals. Other sources of calcium: some green vegetables (e.g. kale, broccoli, okra), apricots, canned nuts, soya beans and soya milk. Most of our vitamin D is produced naturally when our skin is exposed to sunlight (so ensure you spend a little time outside without sun cream). However, our sunlight exposure depends on location and lifestyle. Dietary sources include egg yolks, fatty
beef liver and almond milk. You can also choose foods D (e.g. some breads and cereals) or take supplements. Don’t take more than 500–600 mg of calcium daily and take Vitamin D too, as it’s essential for calcium absorption. Don’t: smoke or exceed the advised alcohol limits of 2 units a day. Both are proven to substantially raise fracture risk. Diagnosing osteoporosis Doctors can use an online tool to assess fracture risk. You may also have a DEXA (DXA) scan that measures bone mineral density, giving you a ‘T score’. diagnosis of osteoporosis. treating osteoporosis Not everyone will need medication and treatment depends on age, sex, risk of fracture, previous injury history and existing conditions. It’s sensible to maintain healthy levels and reduce your fall risk by ensuring your eyesight and supplement may be appropriate. Other medications include: • Bisphosphonates (e.g. etidronate) and Selective Oestrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs), which help maintain bone density. • Strontium ranelate, which reduces bone breakdown and stimulates new bone growth. Education News Doug Clark says “Mission Accomplished!”
Doug Clark with children from the guitar group
When local legend and business entrepreneur Douglas Clark sat down to write his biography ‘Belt and Braces’ with author Euan Rose, he wanted it to be a beacon of inspiration for others, not just a chronicle of his many achievements. Belt and Braces is now in its fifth year of publication. During this time Doug has received worldwide accolades and numerous comments from readers that the book has given them the encouragement to pursue their own dreams. The biography was not written as a money-making venture. Doug decided from the start to give the first £12,000 of royalties received to the music department of Chaddesley
Corbett Endowed Primary School in Worcestershire – the school he had attended as a child. In 2015 Doug presented a cheque to head teacher Emma James at a special assembly. On Thursday July 20 this year, Doug returned to the school to see first-hand the improvements that had been made to benefit the children. On arriving at the School Doug was escorted to the music department by head girl, Natalie Morgan, and head boy Jake Cartwright. Year 2 children then played the djembe drums, which had been purchased with some of the money from Dougʼs donation. Doug toured the department and chatted with Lisa Campbell, the Music Co-ordinator.
He then shared his own love of music with children from the schoolʼs guitar club, showing them some of his very unique guitar collection and entertaining them with a few songs. Doug said: “It has been a very enjoyable five-year journey and I was delighted to return to the school to meet the children and see the music department. I acknowledge I would not have been able to achieve my goal without the help and commitment of some special partnerships. I would personally like to thank Euan Rose for writing my biography and Sarah Rees, from Big Splash Communications, for handling the official press launch of Belt and Braces. My mission is now accomplished!”

Welcome to Bromsgrove Therapy Centre
We are delighted to announce the opening of our exciting new service in support of Bromsgrove residents. We are a small team of local experts who have put our knowledge & experience together to offer a unique service to anyone who is finding life bit of a struggle. We are unique as we don’t consider ourselves to be ‘text-book counsellors’. Our approach is modern, different and certainly not ‘stuffy’. We aim to always make our clients feel that we are ‘in it with them’ and we are passionate about understanding the lives of the people we are supporting. Of course, like other therapists, we provide a relaxing space to talk through problems but often what is needed is more than that. We offer a service that is more engaging, forward thinking and fully focused on you as an individual. I will introduce our team. Above is a picture of myself, Julie Ward, Director of Bromsgrove Therapy Centre.
I am a therapist dealing with all kinds of life’s issues. However, I specialise in addictions and relationship therapy. Working with me is Louise O’Malley, an experienced counsellor who helps individuals resolve stress and anxiety issues, her areas of interest are victim support and bereavement. I also work alongside my colleague Ray Smith, Psychotherapist, Hypnotherapist, counsellor & Reiki master. Between us we make a good team and can help you no matter what your problem is! This is a basic introduction to our services, but the full list and further information can be found on our website: www.bromsgrovewmids-therapy.co.uk.

Government Schemes for First-Time Buyers and Existing Homeowners
If you are an existing homeowner wanting to move up the property ladder, or are a number of government schemes could help you make that investment. From boosting your savings for a deposit to buying a share in a property, take a look below at the main government initiatives circumstances. Help to Buy ISA Eligibility • First-time buyers only. • Purchase price of up to £250,000 (£450,000 in London). • You must live in the property. • It must be your only home. How it works The government boosts your Help to Buy ISA savings by 25%, up to a maximum of £3,000, so for every £100 you save into the ISA you will receive an additional £25 from the government. If you and a home together, you can each open a Help to Buy ISA and take advantage of a savings boost of up to £6,000 in total. equIty loAn (In englAnd) Eligibility • Applies to new-builds only. • First-time buyers and
existing homeowners may be eligible. • Property purchase price up to £600,000 in England. • You must live in the property, and not sub-let it. • It must be your only property. • The home must be purchased from a registered Help to Buy builder. • You cannot use a partexchange deal on your old home. How it works Also known as shared equity, you own your home using the equity loan scheme, purchasing a proportion of the property up front with the remainder being paid back over a pre-agreed term. SHAred ownerSHIp Eligibility You may be eligible for the Shared Ownership scheme if your annual household income is £80,000 or less (£90,000 or less in London) and: • • You have been a homeowner, but are now unable to afford a property. • You already use the shared ownership scheme. How it works You purchase between 25% and 75% of the property outright and pay a subsidised rent on the outstanding portion. You may be able to purchase more shares until you own the whole property, and the rent is reduced proportionately. StArter Home ScHeme The Starter Home scheme is the latest government initiative England onto the property
ladder. Although not yet fully up and running, these are the latest eligibility criteria and details known. Eligibility • First-time buyers aged between 23 and 40. • Maximum household income of £80,000 (£90,000 in London). • Must have a mortgage. • There will be restrictions on the resale or letting of the property for 15 years after purchase. How it works The government is offering a minimum discount of 20% on a property’s market value, so purchasers will need a mortgage of up to 80%. The purchase price after the discount can be up to £250,000 (£450,000 in London). Starter homes under this scheme will be exempt from the Community Infrastructure Levy, which house builders normally have to pay to local authorities. What has caused a housing crisis in recent years? A rise in the UK population, falling numbers of new-build properties and high prices in certain areas of the country have all combined to create a dire need for affordable housing. If you are in this situation, hopefully one of these schemes will help you on to the property ladder sooner rather than later. www.helptobuy.gov.uk www.ownyourhome.gov.uk/ scheme/starter-homes www.thebureauinvestigates. com/explainers/what-isaffordable-housing-a-bureauguide

Chef Lorenzo Richards Launches Cu Local award-winning chef, Lorenzo Richards, dished up a selection of cross-culture fusion food at a special VIP event on June 29, at his restaurant The Wildmoor Oak near Bromsgrove.
Chef Lorenzo has been working in collaboration with three high profile partners from Birminghamʼs AfroCaribbean community to organise the three-day food and drink event. The Expo is an ambitious project, which will bring together celebrity chefs and restaurants to help raise the profile of the diversity of African and Caribbean cuisine - the result of a heritage steeped in crosscultural food influences. The event provides a platform for positioning African and Caribbean cuisine as a mainstream fine dining alternative to the popular ethnic foods which have monopolised the UK restaurant scene for many decades.
Following a Caribbean Bellini drinks reception Chef Lorenzo provided guests with a selection of fusion food canapés. These included miniature Jamaican dumplings with a fusion of Salsa and Caribbean Scotch Bonnet peppers, Pumpkin rice arancini balls, and Jerk Scotch eggs. He also served his signature Ackee and Saltfish Bammy Stack, a Jamaican national dish. The event was held to officially launch Culture Cooking Expo, the UKʼs largest indoor African and Caribbean Food and Drink Expo, which is open to the generalpublic and takes place in Birmingham, from September 29 to October 1.
High profile personalities associated with the project include award-winning Master Chef Collin Brown, who will have one of six fully operational pop up restaurants at the Expo, where he will be serving his fusion between Caribbean and European cuisine.

Home & Interiors Inspired by Colour
By Katherine Sorrell
dyes could be extracted from other sources, such as ultramarine blue from ground lapis lazuli gemstones or Tyrian purple, where 10,000 boiled snails produced just one gram of dye. the story of colour is the story of society, of fashion, of the way we live, of science, of art – in fact, of mankind itself. We look at all aspects of colour, from its history to this year’s most fashionable shades. Did you know there was a time when green wallpaper could kill? Or that a very expensive dye was made from boiled snails? In the Palaeolithic era about 35,000 years ago - Stone Age man began to create cave paintings using earth pigments mixed with resin, water or glue made from animal bones and hides. For centuries the most widely used natural pigments were extracted from soil and rocks, plants, insects and animals. Ash and chalk were also basics; at a price, however, strong, bright pigments or
Historically, the use of colour was governed by ease of availability and thus cost. The richest colours were always reserved for the most important parts of religious and royal interiors. In the Georgian period, the affordable ‘common’ colours included stone and timber colours, greys and whites – in the form of distemper and white lead. Middle class households would often use the slightly more expensive oil colours such as ‘drab’ (dull brownish grey), olive, pea green and sky blue. More expensive paints included pink, lemon, orange and straw colour, while the most costly were verdigris, ultramarine and smalt, a glittering blue. Everything changed from the early 19th century, when chemists began to develop synthetic colours at lower
cost. Many new colours were developed and old ones were improved - though an exception was Emerald Green, commercially available from 1814 to the early 1900s, as fumes from wallpaper printed with the arsenic-based ink could be deadly. The new Victorian palette included bottle greens, gold, burgundy, crimson, rose, violet and mahogany, as well as intense chemical yellows, blues and greens. Edwardian hues became softer and paler and, ever since, colour has followed the rolleradvances: from the ‘greeneryyallery’ of the Aesthetic movement to the brilliant white produced by the introduction of titanium dioxide in 1916 and from the sorbet colours of the Fifties right through to the pinks, blues and greens of 2017. It’s fair to say that the modern world of colour has no limits.

This year, we are able to unite both halves of the Throckmorton family miniature collection on public display for the first time. Portrait miniatures were expensive and intricate decorative objects. They were first made for royalty in the sixteenth century but soon became fashionable in high society. Skilled specialist painters created incredibly detailed but tiny images on vellum, copper and ivory. Looking after precious objects and conserving this family home for future generations is very important to us here at Coughton and the work that has been carried out wouldn’t be possible without supporters like you giving through membership, admissions, purchases in the shop and that delicious piece of cake in the café. In the dining room this autumn we have a very special display of items from a recent Throckmorton family wedding. Magnus Birch-Throckmorton and Imogen Chisholm-Batten were married here on 24 June 2017. It is a family tradition to get married at Coughton Court and we’re delighted to have Imogen's wedding dress, bridesmaid dress and a few wedding photos on display. Come and take a look!

Pugs and French Bulldogs are such lovely little dogs, very sociable and happy.” Clent Hills Vets will be running its next ʻKnow Your Breed Meet Upʼ for owners of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. The event takes place on 14th September from 7.45pm - 9.30pm. Expert Panel at July event [L-R] Head Vet Rod Stroud, Luan Cinque (Purina Foods) and Alex Imerfreys (VetPlus)
A free event for dog owners was a tremendous success in July with all available places booked. Thirty local pet owners and 18 dogs attended the ʻKnow Your Breed Frenchies and Pugs Meet Upʼ at Clents Hills Vets in Bromsgrove. The event was held partly in response to recent media coverage focusing on the health problems associated with the brachycephalic breeds which include breathing difficulties, skin infections, spinal and eye problems. Attendees had a chance to mingle with other same breed owners before taking part in a questions and answers session with an expert panel, including Head
Vet and Practice Partner Rod Stroud, Luan Cinque from Purina Foods and Alex Imerfreys from VetPlus. Topics included surgical procedures which can help improve the health and wellbeing of these breeds. Several people attending were thinking of buying one of these types of dog and the event was especially helpful for them, as was the opportunity to talk to existing owners about their personal experiences. Commenting on the event Rod Stroud said: “I would like to see the breed standards change but at the moment we have a responsibility to care for these pets and provide the appropriate treatments to

Gardeners In Glass Houses by Pippa Greenwood
A greenhouse is a purchase you won’t regret, literally transforming your gardening activities and opening up a whole new range of possibilities - but what should you consider? A greenhouse needs to be sited well away from large trees, to prevent shady conditions within, as well as falling branches or other tree debris damaging the glass and clogging the guttering. If you are going to want to install any electrical equipment, bear in mind that the further the greenhouse is from the existing supply, the more expensive it will be to install underground armoured cable. Choose the largest greenhouse your space and budget allows, as many gardeners end up wishing for something larger. But any greenhouse is better than none, so if 4ft x 4ft is the only option, then still go for it! Most greenhouses have a frame made from wood or metal (typically aluminium). Many prefer the look of wood, but it will need regular maintenance unless it is western red cedar. Whichever you choose, make sure it is sturdily constructed, especially if you live in a windprone area. Plenty of ventilation helps reduce the temperature, particularly in the height of summer, preventing damage
to plants or even their death. It also improves air circulation, so reducing problems with plant diseases. Consider roof vents, which aid air circulation and Make sure that greenhouse doorway is wide enough for easy access - ideally wide enough to push a wheelbarrow through, as this makes jobs such as changing the soil or bringing in compost easier. A greenhouse should be erected on a solid base - perhaps paving slabs, concrete or bricks - or on a skirt or surround of paving or concrete. A solid path up the centre is practical and can be combined with an open bed up one or both sides. A bed has the with quality soil and planted directly, making maintenance of crops like tomatoes straightforward. A solid base means greenhouse crops must be grown in containers. I recommend greenhouse staging, usually made from slatted wood or metal, as a perfect place to stand seed trays, pots and propagators. with horticultural grade glass, but this can be replaced with safety glass or reinforced glass if the garden is used by children. Plastic, polythene or corrugated plastic ‘glazing’
are also available; these are generally lower cost and less of a potential hazard - but check how long they will last and consider how they will look. Useful extras include: shading; guttering and a linked in waterbutt; and an electrical supply, which allows heating, lighting, fans and installation of a heated propagator. My Top Reasons for Getting a Greenhouse • You can grow a wider range of crops with ease. • It provides a longer growing season. • You can raise plants from seed and save money. • It will dramatically reduce the risk of problems such as tomato blight. • Plants get plenty of natural light and are more likely to thrive. • It makes a perfect gardener’s hide-away!
