I have enjoyed this year and the magazine is going from strength to strength with some very positive changes being planned for early 2018, although I can’t say much more at the moment but “watch this space”. Thank you once again for taking the time to browse through the magazine, I hope you find it informative and useful and if you would like any additions to the magazine, please don’t hesitate to provide me with your suggestions. Hope you enjoy this edition and don’t forget YOU can provide YOUR stories too ?. Until next time. Lyndon.

French Omelette with Garlic Tomatoes Serves 1
Ready in 15 minutes
Eggs are the perfect fridge standby for a quick and filling supper. Here’s how to make a classic creamy French omelette for one in a few simple steps – the recipe can easily be doubled to serve two people.
Toss the tomatoes and garlic with the olive oil. Place on a foil-lined grill pan and cook under a medium heat for 4-5 minutes until just tender.
Ingredients: • • • • • • • •
8 cherry tomatoes, halved 2 tsp olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 large eggs 1tbsp milk Salt and freshly ground black pepper Large knob of butter Spinach and rocket leaves, to serve
Meanwhile, lightly beat the eggs and milk in a jug and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Heat the butter in a small omelette or non-stick frying pan until it is just foaming. Pour in the beaten eggs and stir gently with a fork, drawing the mixture in from the sides to the centre as it sets and letting the liquid egg run out to the sides. When the omelette is just set, stop stirring and cook for a further 30 seconds to brown the underside (see tip). Place the grilled tomatoes on top of the omelette.
TIP Take care not to overcook the omelette – keep the heat at medium and remove the pan from the heat when the top is still soft and creamy.
5
Slide the omelette onto a serving plate, tipping the pan to gently fold it over the tomatoes. Serve immediately with salad.

A viable alternative to Sixth Form and college Now is often a stressful time for people who have just finished their GCSE’s and moved onto further education. But what happens if their choice wasn’t what they had hoped it would be? For some a classroom environment is not always suitable because they are more practical, or want to start earning money and developing a career. This is why an LMPQ Advanced IT Apprenticeship is a “Win, Win” solution, a learner can gain an Industry recognised qualification (Equivalent to 2 “A” Levels), 4 Microsoft Technology Accredited Certificates and skills training modern companies want while getting paid.
George (pictured) is a real example of one of our apprentices who came to us by this route, he had progressed onto Sixth Form but it soon became apparent that sitting behind a desk for another 2 years was not what he wanted. He contacted LMPQ and he is now working as an IT Apprentice with an employer close to where he lives.
So if you or someone you know is at Sixth Form or college and it’s not working out - please ask them to contact Lee Kloos on: 07896 621281 or email lee.kloos@lmpq.co.uk

Events News Ball Raised almost £8000 for Charity
[L-R] Gemma Hooley (BCH), John & Claire Singleton and their children Emily & Jack
Singletons Nurseries in Bromsgrove has raised almost £8000 for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital. 160 people attended the Red Balloon Charity Ball at Singletons Nurseries on 16th September. Guests enjoyed a threecourse meal and live entertainment. Local magician Luke Baker had a few tricks up his sleeve on the night and JohnJames and Leah Ingle demonstrated their Salsa skills on the dance floor. ʻOn The Raggedy Edgeʼ then took to the stage playing cover tunes from across the ages. A raffle, charity auction and silent auction helped raise money for the Hospital, along with the profit from ticket sales.
The event was held in celebration of Singletonʼs Nurseriesʼ 70th birthday. The business, established in 1947, was originally based in Birmingham and moved to its current Lydiate Ash location in 2001. Since then the business has significantly expanded with more commercial growing, the introduction of landscaping services and the opening of Potting Shed café and gift shop last year. John and Claire Singleton are passionate about fundraising for the Birmingham Childrenʼs Hospital. Over the past two years they have helped raise a total of £16,615. The £7980 raised at the Red Balloon Charity Ball will benefit the oncology unit at the hospital.

A Busy November by Pippa Greenwood
Despite the seasonal slowdown there are lots of jobs which, if done now, could end up saving you time and money later on - so here are the top November gardening tasks to get to grips with.
Trees, shrubs and climbers that have been planted recently may need protection from frost winter. Use a layer or two of
Hoe off weeds that are around now, as some might still set seed during mild, damp periods. Provided they have no seed pods their top-growth can safely be composted, but bin,

roots to prevent them growing in the compost heap!
If you’re planning on hedgeplanting, remember that many hedging plants are cheaper if

borders, and remove some of the foliage that is dying back purely due to the time of year. Leave some deteriorating but healthy foliage in place to provide protection for the crowns of more fragile plants. Rabbits become more of a menace as natural food supplies reduce, so make sure that rabbit netting is not damaged and that trees, especially those that have been tree guards. If there is a sizeable tree near your lawn, rake up fallen leaves on a regular basis to prevent damage to the grass beneath.
potted on. Order now to make sure you get the pick of the bunch. Bare root plants are not feasible once the leaves start to appear next year. Use seed catalogues and websites to help decide what you want to grow next year. Many suppliers offer seeds and young plants of many vegetables, so order now and you can relax, knowing choice selection. Check out my website, www.pippagreenwood. com/grow-your-own, for a Grow Your Own package perfect for the less experienced vegetable grower - the plants you choose come with weekly advice
emails telling you exactly what you need to be doing. Established clumps of bamboo should be thinned out now. The extra space that the remaining canes will have will allow them to grow away better, and also gives them more freedom to move about in that way which makes bamboos so very appealing. Less tender bulbs such as nerines and many of the agapanthus will winter better if you give them a little protection now. Mound dry chipped bark or other mulch over the area in which they are planted. And last but not least, before rain grab a sturdy brush and clean each one out thoroughly, removing deposits of algae, soggy bits of plant and general gunge! Rinse out and then re-install ready to collect some rain. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a gorgeous selection of useful gardening items, perfect for gifts too, including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, fleece jackets, cloches, fruit cages, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls, copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Pets News Bromsgrove Lab Sheds The Flab!
[L-R] Clare Bruce with Busta and head vet Alun Edwards
An overweight dog who was crippled with arthritis has turned his life around by shedding nearly ten kilos - thanks to the help of a local vet.
Bustaʼs desperate owner, Clare Bruce, took him to Doggy Weight Watchers sessions, at Clent Hills Vets, every four weeks from March to September.
Busta Bruce, an eight-year old black Labrador from Bromsgrove, weighed 46 kilos when he started a special weight loss programme at Clent Hills Vets in Bromsgrove.
Under the guidance of head vet Alun Edwards, supported by a team of practice nurses, a plan was developed specifically for Busta, involving a special diet and exercise regime.
His size related problems included painful arthritis in his front legs and he was developing pronounced fatty lumps which were affecting his health and would require surgical intervention if they continued to grow.
Having lost 9.3 kilos Busta is now pain-free and drugfree and enjoying the benefits of a far more active lifestyle. Commenting on Bustaʼs case Alun Edwards said: “Labrador obesity has
made the national headlines recently following research undertaken by scientists at the University of Cambridge. A study into the appetite of Britain's favourite dog breed suggested Labradors are not just typically greedy but are genetically at risk of becoming overweight. Research supported by the Dogs Trust identified a gene mutation responsible for increasing the appetite of Labradors.” He continued: “We are working hard to help tackle canine obesity, to ensure pets lead a healthier, happier life.” Clare Bruce said: “Busta always seemed hungry and I fed him because I couldnʼt bear to think he wasnʼt eating enough. The expert help on offer at Clent Hils Vets has enabled me to help Busta on his weight loss journey. Itʼs amazing to see what a difference it has made to both our lives.” For more details about the Doggy Weight Watchers Programme contact Clent Hills Vets on: 01527 889810.

Support Bromsgrove Shops this Christmas
Plenty of festive cheer on offer at Cupitt Jeweller in Bromsgrove
The number of consumers who choose to do their Christmas shopping online is ever-increasing. However, almost a third of Brits are actually worried about Christmas disappearing from the high street, prompting action groups to run campaigns encouraging people to buy locally, from independent shops. Christmas is a crucial time for small local businesses and if you donʼt support them they may not be there at other times of the year, when you simply want to pop to a local shop to buy something quickly.
Keep your hard-earned cash in the local economy by spending your Christmas pounds locally at the variety of independent shops available in Bromsgrove. Despite the criticism the High Street has attracted in recent years, the town centre now has plenty to offer when youʼre shopping for those special Christmas gifts and festive essentials. Cllr Karen May, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, the Town Centre and Strategic Partnerships, at Bromsgrove District Council said:
“Bromsgrove is a fantastic town which has seen a number of new retail outlets opening over the past year. Owners of the small, independent shops work extremely hard to provide a positive shopping experience but they can only remain in the town if people support them. Every £1 spent in local shops is worth £1.61 to the local economy. So when you support your local shops you are also helping to invest in the long-term sustainability of the town.” Clare Rayner of Retail Champion said: “Christmas sales can account for between a third and nearly two-thirds of a retailerʼs annual turnover. A bad Christmas can mark disaster for a small business. Sadly it really is a case of ʻuse it or lose itʼ. So before you push the ʻbuyʼ button online this year, take a trip into Bromsgrove. Enjoy the festive lights, the in-store Christmas decorations and appreciate being able to see and touch products before you buy them. Friendly staff and waiting to serve you...

Beauty Tis The Season To Party by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk Handbag essentials to transform you from frazzled office worker to fabulous partygoer in minutes. Work deadlines plus shopping, wrapping, cooking and dealing with family life can leave you feeling rather frazzled. Try a spritz of Tisserand De-Stress Mist to keep the tension down. The blend of calming essential oils, including geranium, orange, nutmeg, rose and jasmine smells lovely and really does seem to help soothe the senses. Not keen on sprays? The blend is also available as a rollerball. The De-Stress Mist is priced at £8.95 and the De-Stress Rollerball at £5.95, from www. tisserand.com. Dry, chapped lips are not a good look and matte lipsticks often highlight the problem. Clarins’ Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector is a great alternative. It’s available in several shades and leaves lips feeling soft, hydrated and plumped, while adding a touch of colour and shine. It is more of a gloss than a lipstick, so the colour and shine won’t last for hours, but it’s well worth the extra applications. A full-sized Lip Perfector is £18, but if you’re quick you may be able to snap up a mini one for a bargain price with one of Clarins’ Christmas giftsets, see www.clarins. co.uk.
You can’t have failed to notice that brows are having their moment in the spotlight. Whether you prefer a bold bushy arch à la Lily Collins or something a bit more streamlined, a good brow pencil is invaluable. High Definition’s Browtec Pencil tip so you can achieve precise strokes; it’s topped with a brush; and the colour stays put all
High Definition has also released a Limited Edition Copper Eyeshadow Palette that’s deserving of a place in your arsenal. The rose gold, copper and bronze shades work beautifully together to create a look that’s perfect for parties. The three shades come with a mirror and double-headed brush, all housed in a very compact case. £23.50, www.
Don’t fancy carrying your makeup loose in your handbag? Christmas is the perfect time to treat yourself to a new cosmetics bag. On a bit of a tight budget? Lots of gift sets have a case included for free, or check out TK Maxx for luxury options at a fraction of the price. Pencil cases also do the job just as well, with the added advantage of often being waterproof. The Paperchase Glamingo Pencil Case is just £7. The extra pocket at the front is perfect for makeup brushes and other extras. See www. paperchase.co.uk.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month
Around 44,500 people in the UK are diagnosed with lung cancer every year. It’s one of the most feared, yet preventable, cancers. Lung Cancer Awareness Month aims to foster hope with news of new treatments and alleviate stigma, reminding us that lung cancer can affect anyone. Lung CanCer Causes smoking Smoking is responsible for 90% of all UK cases and 6 million deaths, worldwide, each year. Tobacco smoke contains 60 carcinogens and also causes breast, bowel (colorectal), blood, bladder, liver, mouth, pancreatic and stomach cancer. Cannabis also contains carcinogens. Starting smoking when young increases lung cancer risk, but quitting reduces risk to that of a non-smoker in 15 years. Passive smoking Non-smoking women living with smoking partners are 25% more likely to develop lung cancer than those with nonsmokers. Smokers should never smoke near others or in their environment, as toxins can settle on surfaces and be re-released or form toxic compounds. It’s now illegal to smoke in a vehicle carrying under-18s. environmental Toxins These include radon, arsenic, asbestos, beryllium, cadmium, coal and coke fumes, silica, nickel, diesel fumes and high levels of nitrogen oxide (mostly from vehicles).
age and genes About 80% of lung cancers occur in the over-60s and a family history of lung cancer may increase risk. symPToms of Lung CanCer If you have any of these symptoms, DO see your doctor immediately but DON’T panic; they can indicate less serious conditions. Common symptoms: • A new, persistent cough. • A long-standing cough that changes or worsens. • Persistent/frequent chest infections. • Pain or blood when coughing/ breathing. • Persistent breathlessness/ fatigue. • Loss or change of appetite. • Unexplained weight loss. Less common symptoms: • become more curved or thicken at • High temperature. • swallowing. • Wheezing. • Hoarseness. • Swelling of your face or neck. • Persistent ache or pain in the chest or shoulder. • Pins and needles/numbness in • Drowsiness, weakness, dizziness and confusion. • Breast swelling in men. • Blood clots. • Severe pain in the shoulder or down the arm. • In one eye: drooping eyelid and/or a small pupil. • Loss of sweating on one side of the face. Diagnosing Lung CanCer Your GP will assess your general health and breathing. They may refer you for a blood test and/or X-ray. If necessary, they’ll refer you to specialist who may
perform further tests including scans (ultrasound, CT or PET), a bronchoscopy and a biopsy. TyPes, sTages anD TreaTmenT of Lung CanCer The more common non-small stages 1 to 4. Stage 1 is the least extensive, while Stage 4 indicates lung cancer that has spread to both lungs or other areas. Treatment depends on your health and the type, stage and position of your cancer. Treatments include: • Surgery. • Chemotherapy. • Radiotherapy. • Chemoradiotherapy. • Symptom relief. If you’re in good health and the cancer is in one lung, surgery followed by radiotherapy is often chosen. In other cases, chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy will be recommended. small cell lung cancer usually spreads more quickly. It’s spread beyond one lung and nearby lymph nodes, and this. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy is usually recommended. new immunotherapy and targeted treatments are improving outcomes, so don’t delay a visit to the doctor.

The History of Christmas Traditions By Alison Runham these longstanding festivals than to persuade people to give them up. Emperor, Constantine, began celebrating Christmas on December 25th in 336. A few years later, Pope Julius I
Every year, some people mourn the loss of traditional, more faith-based Christmas celebrations. Yet most December 25th traditions are far less Christian and much more recently adopted in the UK than they may think. Celebrating on DeCember 25th Jesus’ birth date isn’t documented and the gospels of Matthew and Luke, written long after his death, give contradictory clues. Some scholars say the sheep on the hillside and the census suggest good weather, indicating spring to early autumn. So why is Christmas celebrated on the 25th of December? Midwinter festivals abounded by the time Christianity took hold. There were winter solstice celebrations such as Yule and Koleda, and the Roman festivals of Saturnalia (which included decorating your home with evergreens – sound familiar?) and Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, ‘birthday of the unconquered sun’, on December 25th. It was easier for early proponents of Christianity to introduce it into
celebrate Jesus’ birth. Some scholars believe he also chose this date to honour Hanukkah and Jesus’ own religion, Judaism. Orthodox and Coptic Christians celebrate Jesus’s birth on January the 7th - the ‘original’ December 25th. Our December 25th moved when we adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752. Yule logs Today, Yule logs have been mainly superseded by logshaped chocolate cakes here, but neither are connected to Jesus’ birth. Yule logs were part of the Scandinavian Yule celebration, beginning at the winter solstice and running into January. Yule logs were burned to mark the return of the sun and festivities continued until they burned out. Celts also burned a Yule log, believing it persuaded the sun to return and bestowed good luck on those who dragged it from the forest. hollY, ivY anD mistletoe Evergreens were used in winter solstice festivals to bring good luck and signify the coming spring. The tradition of hanging mistletoe in the house is an ancient Druid custom to ward off evil spirits, but in Norse
mythology it’s also a symbol of love (hence kissing under the mistletoe). Christmas PuDDing The original ‘Christmas pudding’ was frumenty, a thin 14th century porridge containing raisins, currants, prunes, wine, spices, beef and mutton. However, by around 1650, people ate plum pudding, and by Victorian times, it was similar to the modern-day Christmas pud. the Christmas tree been used in winter festivals for thousands of years to symbolise the coming spring and everlasting life, although they were often hung upside down from the ceiling rather than stood upright. ‘Christmas trees’ emerged in the 1500s in town squares but took time to come into people’s houses. The Royal Family had one from Georgian times, but an 1848 photo of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their family gathered around theirs popularised the idea. a merrY Christmas Christmas wasn’t celebrated widely in the UK until the Middle Ages, when it was predominantly a time for merrymaking and feasting on animals too expensive to feed through winter. It was later banned for many years by the Puritans for its Pagan origins. It began to recover in Georgian times with a focus on charity and gift-giving, paving the way for the idealised Victorian Christmas described by Charles Dickens.

Home & Interiors Christmas Elegance
By Katherine Sorrell
It’s all too easy to go overboard at Christmas. This year, why not decorate your home with subtle glamour, creating a sophisticated seasonal backdrop to festive times with friends and family. this living room is welcoming and cosy, but also cool, calm and collected, thanks to a subtle colour scheme of greys and whites, together with touches of texture in the form of wicker, wool and wood. traditional nordmann fir, from £29.99; led warm white string lights, from £9.99; wool throw, £59.99; firwood star decoration (set of three), £44.99; Magical Hare cushion, £39.99; tree decorations, from £1.49; all dobbies.
Beautiful baubles will add class to your christmas tree. Walther & co bronze acorn and leaf decoration, £9.99, cotswold trading.
a simple white backdrop with natural, twining leaves is perfect for offsetting the glow of candles. large silver-dipped candle holder, £29.99; led glitter twig wreath, £39.99; medium silverdipped candle holder, £9.99; reindeer bell ornament, £4.99; decorated glass bauble, £3.99; garland (price and details on application); all dobbies.
Instead of a knitted or hessian sack, how about a pretty, printed fabric design? night owl christmas sack, £5.50, sophie allport.
an intriguing and subtle way to display the twinkle of fairy lights. Bo 80 led glassdomed cylinder, £13, B&Q.
a glimmer of metal is all the rage, and these minimal, slightly rusted zinc garlands satisfy the trend without adding any bling. Use along the mantelpiece, twined along the christmas table or hung on the wall. £29.95, decorator’s notebook.
Ideas for elegant festIve décor • Too many colours together tend to look garish. Choose one main colour theme for each room and stick to it. This season, dark backdrops are very on trend, with accents of gold or brass, while white, beige or grey are classics that always look great, with dashes of red or green for that seasonal feel. • With limited colours, textures come into their own. Think linen, wool, fur (faux if you prefer), wicker and – this year’s must-haves – concrete and velvet. • For this look, avoid twee animals, anything knitted or made from felt, and all-out glitter (a little sparkle goes a long way). • Christmas ornaments tend to be collected over the years, and so can look rather haphazard if all displayed in one go. Carefully choose a selection that co-ordinates and – stay strong – put the rest back in the loft for next year.

Helping You Prepare Your Home For Winter three in five people don't prepare their homes for winter, despite three quarters having previously experienced a seasonal maintenance issue. As a result people are relying on emergency call outs, spending on average £114 each time. For some the cost is even higher, between £200 and £700, said E-ON.
[L-R] Paul Warren, Lisa Childs and Brian Warren
Broad Street DIY in Bromsgrove is offering local people free in-store advice and tips on how to prepare your home for the winter months. The initiative aims to help homeowners save money on heating bills and avoid expensive repair bills due to the cold weather damaging properties.
Commenting on the importance of preparing your home for winter Paul Warren, managing director at Broad Street DIY, says: “Many people arenʼt sure how to tackle some of the important maintenance tasks in the home so they simply donʼt do them, or they pay someone to come to their home to get the job done.
Advice will include how to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting; tackling draughty windows and doors; insulating your loft; the importance of cleaning gutters; and how to bleed radiators to ensure they heat up properly.
We are inviting people to pop into our shop for professional, friendly advice to help them understand how to get some of the essential tasks done, which will hopefully save them money.”
According to research undertaken by the energy provider E-ON in 2016,

Theatre News 60th Birthday Inspired New Musical This song inspired Jo to write ʻDelayedʼ, which begins on that train station platform. The musical incorporates many of her fatherʼs songs, carefully knitted together to tell a breathtaking story.
The owner of a local theatre school presented her dad with the surprise of a lifetime when she wrote, staged and directed a brand new musical for his 60th birthday present. Songwriter Paul Edwards had no idea what his daughter had prepared for him, when he arrived at the Artrix in Bromsgrove on 22nd October, for the premiere of her show. Jo Payne, who has run The Star Project Theatre School (Barnt Green, Droitwich and Solihull) for the past ten years, launched a charity called Quiet Gifts in 2016. The charity helps and supports young people who have never had the opportunity to let their quiet theatrical gifts shine. Thanks to National Lottery Funding, secured in spring 2017, Jo was able to give
Jo said: “I grew up listening to dadʼs music and Delayed provided an opportunity to showcase his heartfelt songwriting. I hope it provides a platform for the world to become more aware of his music. I wanted to give dad something special for his birthday, so I gave him a musical!”
Jo Payne with dad Paul Edwards, after the Premiere
young people the chance to work with professionals from the performing arts industry as Quiet Gifts put its first project in motion ʻDelayed - The Musicalʼ. ʻDelayedʼ was born from an early song written by Paul, ʻBrown Haired Girlʼ. The song tells the story of two strangers who meet at a railway station. Despite speaking different languages they communicate through gestures and an old photograph.
Moving forward, Quiet Gifts hopes to create musicals and plays which can be performed locally, in schools and community groups. These pieces will highlight the issues young people face, to create discussion forums. It is hoped this will help identify young people that need help, signposting them to the right people. Jo concludes: “We want to build confidence and creative courage, helping young people to focus on their gifts - not their fears.” www.facebook.com/ DelayedTheMusicalQG

Food & Drink News Something New for Lovers of Liquorice thought to be at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries, when Crusaders returning from the Middle East took it to Pontefract in Yorkshire – it has been popular for both medicinal purposes and (since the 1700s) as a confectionery. Now it is also proving popular as a drink.
The Sweet Genie - Moustafa Elgendy
A businessman from Astwood Bank, Redditch, has created the UK’s first carbonated liquorice soft drink and it is proving a huge success with lovers of all things liquorice! Moustafa Elgendy left his native Egypt in 2011 to settle in Worcestershire.
