Hello and welcome to the 'new look' Bromsgrove and Redditch Pages This November issue is the first under the new ownership and I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and briefly share with you my plans for the magazine in the future. My name is Lyndon Stokes and I run a local marketing business focussed on helping local businesses grow in their community and I would like to bring a similar ethos to this magazine, helping local businesses connect with their communities and vice versa. I have some really great ideas for how we can positively change the magazine into a focal point for local news, events, information and stories from both the community and local business. These changes will be aimed at makeing the magazine even more interesting and readable, hopefully meaning that people will keep it longer and look forward to it being delivered each month. I hope you like this first ‘new look' issue and I look forward to helping local businesses thrive in their local communities. Until next month. Kind regards Lyndon.

Fancy a Holiday? Going on a cruise for a holiday has never been more popular than it is today, so little wonder it is the fastest growing sector within the travel trade. The value for money a cruise represents is perhaps the main reason for its huge rise in popularity. Compared against a land based trip, regular cruisers would argue there is no contest, you get to see so many new places and unpack just the once, and if sailing from the UK all the hassle of airports and the luggage restrictions they impose is non-existent, so yes ladies, you can take as many different outfits (shoes as well) as you see fit. Personally I am not a fan of dressing up all the time, but once or twice in a while feels pretty good and it’s great to see everyone else, as Rod Stewart would say in their ‘Glad rags’ I am very fortunate to have been on 14 ships to date, and each and every one offers something different. I firmly believe there is a ship for everyone and a quality travel consultant can make sure that you sail on the one that suits you best. I have met many people who for whatever reason are not keen on the concept of cruise, however I have yet to come across an objection that I was not able to overcome and here are a few examples • seasickness – Modern ships suffer very little from swell unlike channel crossings • Claustrophobia – sometimes you never meet the same people twice • Expensive – with present deals an all-inclusive package costs much less than you think • Boring – Not possible today with activities from dawn till dusk to suit every taste • Elitist – Never if your agent puts you on the ship that suits you and yours • stuffy/regimented dining – Eat when you want, with who you choose The list of objections to taking a cruise can go on and on but as yet I have never failed to convince reluctant partners and children to give it a go. Three or four night taster cruises out of Southampton are now so popular they sell out very quickly. The itineraries that are available have allowed me to visit places I would not have typically thought of going to but are fantastic for a few hours to explore such as Venice, Palermo, Pisa, Cadiz, Cannes to mention just a few and one of my favourites kotor in Montenegro and that is just few European highlights. Further afield you can see Alaska, New England, Asia, south America, hawaii. The world can be your oyster on what people are calling floating cities but if your preference is for a more intimate experience why not try one of the more exclusive 6 star alternatives. Cruising is a passion of mine and I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have, if you are not sure which cruise to choose call me for a chat or email for more details:

“Nordic Walking - Fun, Sociable Outdoor Exercise”
A new fitness concept is taking Bromsgrove by storm. Visitors to Sander’s Park may have noticed people walking with what look like ski poles! This is Nordic walking and that it is the fastest growing fitness activity in the world with over 10 million enthusiasts now regularly taking part in what was originally used by super fit cross country skiers as a way to stay fit during the summer. It’s suitable for all ages and fitness levels, simple to learn and really sociable” says Ian Northcott, a local Nordic walking UK Instructor. “By using the specially designed poles, you can use all the major muscles in the body and burn up to twice as many calories as ordinary walking but the best thing is that the poles actually propel you along so it feels easier! “. The poles also reduce the pressure on the knees and joints and the gentle upper body movement is great for easing back and neck pain too. It’s so effective that it is being used for weight loss, rehabilitation and sports specific training all the over the UK and those that have tried all agree that being outdoors was energising and that they felt fantastic afterwards! However it is not simply a case of grabbing a pair of poles and walking with them! It requires the correct technique in order to get the whole body working. NORDIC WALKING FACTS • It can burn nearly twice as many calories as ordinary walking • It reduces the strain on knees and joints

A Story of a Bromsgrove Church and its People By Simon henderson the Friends of st John’s have published a history book as a project to support the ongoing restoration, maintenance and improvement need at Bromsgrove’s Landmark church. written by local historian and past churchwarden of st John’s, simon henderson, “Fairly Mounted on a hill” is a lively book which tells the story of a church and the people who used it.
About the Author
simon henderson has been exploring the medieval parish churches of England since his teens, fascinated not just by their architecture and construction but by their unique role as the oldest continually used buildings in the English landscape. A term as churchwarden of just such a church gave him the opportunity he needed to get under its skin, and it was perhaps inevitable that he would eventually try to combine this with his training as an architect and a certain amount of natural nosiness in telling its story. Simon lives in Worcestershire with his family, where his day job is persuading people that buildings are more than bricks and mortar.
About the Book
Before henry VIII created the first of many splits in the English Church every man, woman and child in the country saw their local church as a focus of their life – whether for the services it held, the rites of passage it managed, the entertainment it provided or the comfort it brought. while modern England developed around it the parish church provided a point of continuity and permanence in often troubled times, and it was sometimes the only place of record for the lives of the people who used it. This human story complements the church as a piece of architecture; it explains why churches look as they do and why we are who we are. This is the story of a particular church in a particular town. But it is also our own history – every one of us, even if we have never been through the door.

ThErE is hOPE FOr rECOVErY aFTEr sTrOKE My name is Pete Rumbold and I am a stroke survivor!! In November 2011 I suffered a major stroke which left me paralysed on my left side, unable to speak, see or swallow. After I left hospital I was witness to the very short stroke care pathway and lack of support with my recovery, my decision to take charge of my own recovery and day by day I recovered slowly but surely using task related exercises and strength training. I decided that my future would be helping other stroke survivors recover and get their lives back on track. I qualified as a L2 exercise instructor, L3 personal trainer, GP referral instructor and L4 ARNI Stroke Rehabilitation Instructor. I now lead a dedicated team of professional ARNI Instructors at Altered Images Gym and Physio Clinic, Bromsgrove, dedicated to helping stroke survivors to recover. The ARNI Institute (Action for Rehabilitation of Neurological Injury) is a charity originally founded in 2001 for stroke survivors around the UK who are in the rehabilitation phases of stroke. If you, your partner, friend or relative have suffered a stroke and don’t know who to turn to for help with there recovery?

Why Should I Worry About Business Crime?
“Think about it as either loss prevention or profit protection, it doesn’t matter which!” Says North Worcestershire’s new Business and Rural Crime Co-ordinator, Dave Rischmiller. It might help to focus minds to bear in mind that The Federation of Small Businesses have identified that members lose an average of £13.500 annually to crime with two of every three businesses becoming victims. These however are probably minimum figures and without a doubt under-reporting of Business Crime particularlyin the retail sector is significant where BRC figures for 2012-13 showed a cost to the sector of £511 Million. Facts highlighted at the recent launch of North Worcestershire’s Business Crime Strategy. There are many reasons for under-reporting of crime but the most under-appreciated fact is that ever-scarcer Police and partner agency resources are targeted based on reported crime incidents, in essence the consequence is that if it’s not reported then it influences nothing! Individual crimes may not be solvable but when a pattern of crime is identified through reporting then this will lead to it appearing on the crime intelligence radar. Business spends millions using data to identify customer trends to target its activity to maximise Business advantage, the Police and partner agencies do exactly the same thing to deploy their resources, by not reporting crime they are deprived of that data or it is inaccurate, with perhaps significant implications for us all! With funding cuts predicted to result in Policing resources falling to their lowest level since the 1970’s their accurate deployment is ever more important and additionally it is critical that everyone including businesses switch on to the necessity to take appropriate measures to protect themselves from crime, including Cyber-crime an increasing problem area. There are a range of options open to businesses to minimise their exposure to crime and free advice and support in this area is available through Dave Rischmiller whose role is supported by the Police and Crime Commissioner. Also covering Wyre Forest he can be contacted through the Community Safety office for Bromsgrove and Redditch on 01527 64252 or david.rischmiller@bromsgroveandredditch.gov.uk

What do you need to change?
How many times do we stay in the same situation, regardless of how much it hurts, because we are too frightened to change?
It can feel draining to our spirit to deal with a barrage of lifestyle changes and “the straw that breaks the camel’s back” can literally stop us in our tracks, making us feel ill-‐ equipped to deal with the situation and leaving us not knowing what to do. What if life threw you a curve ball and hit you with something you didn’t expect? Something that maybe you couldn’t handle on your own, such as divorce, redundancy or illness, how would you cope? Often the logic in our head is clear and concise to help other people, but when change is forced upon our self, it can feel like a sucker punch to our emotions. The only guarantee in life is “change” which can be either for the better or worse. It can be forced upon us or by our own choice and it can be an exciting or frightening process to achieve what you really need to happen.
You would never drive your car with the handbrake on but so often that’s how we live our lives, allowing things that don’t serve us any longer to hamper our progress, so what is holding you back? Now imagine you are driving along the road in an open top car on a sunny day without a care in the world, how would you feel? Hold that emotion as a motivator to get what you really want, because that will be the key to your version of freedom. I help people find clarity in their turbulent lives by creating a confidential space where they can share their worries, address their fears and plan their solutions. I empower people with lifestyle choices to define their goals and hone their expectations.
“I help people because I’ve already been there myself”
Amazon customers have described “Understanding the Mirror” as ‘brave and honest’, ‘hard-‐hitting’ and ‘empowering’ book, for unashamedly tackling the inner thoughts and feelings that many people battle with but don’t talk about. The man outgrew the mask the mask Thewho man who outgrew Mike describes himself as an average man that has faced many obstacles but didn’t always make the right choices. His life hasn’t been unique but his story will resonant with the struggles and pitfalls that most people face. But he suppressed his feelings through fear of judgement and to his detriment he created a persona that he thought the world wanted to see, rather than being true to himself. He has seen firsthand the effects of rejection and isolation on the mind and spirit which compounded his feelings of despair. When Mike reached the darkest times of his life, nothing made sense anymore. Regardless of how hard he worked his lifestyle was still on self-destruct. With his family unit in disarray, his brother terminally ill and his own life in pieces, he decided to train to become a Life Coach. By understanding these skills, it gave him a valuable insight into how to make positive changes in his own life and can now share that knowledge to help others.
Mike Bowden Lifestyle Coach Speaker & Author
It’s his troubled history which makes him so empathetic to the issues of others. “I have already been there and done it” he explains. “Through my work at Changing Outcomes, I am able to give people permission to talk about their problems in a confidential space so they don’t need to hide behind a mask. I work with my clients to ease the pressures that they are under.” Mike wanted to share his own turbulent journey to highlight how vulnerable we all can be and helps people realize that we all have similar challenges but we can choose to take a different direction to solve our problems. He is the author of Understanding The Mirror which shares his own emotionally charged journey. This is available in paperback or kindle through the amazon website. The reason that Mike is able to help people so successfully, is that he doesn’t offer textbook solutions or a script of empty words, but more so he himself is living testimony to the positive changes he has made. He doesn’t merely speak the words his clients want to hear, but he helps people to have the difficult conversations they need to have with themselves to make positive changes. Catshill Garage
“Success on and off the track” Catshill Garage has been an integral part of village life in Catshill, Bromsgrove for many years and for the last 62 years has been independently owned and run by the Woodhouse family and current owners Mark and Rose still live in Catshill and are extremely proud of the business and it’s connections with local village life.
The garage offers a comprehensive range of services including all makes servicing, mechanical repairs, welding, diagnostics, air conditioning, tyres, batteries, vehicle body repairs and MOT work. All the above are backed up by a free collection and delivery service and friendly advice and support are always on hand for those requiring it. The business is a genuine hub for all types of mechanical repairs and they can often be seen repairing and servicing a wide range of garden equipment ranging from traditional petrol mowers to the more complex ride on mowers for bigger gardens. Mark and his family also have a great history of success in racing single seater racing cars and recently Mark and his son Jack attained great victories in the Chateau Impney Hill Climb event with Jack claiming the title after completing the new 1,000-yard course in just 42.42 seconds, in front of almost 10,000 spectators and Mark winning first place in his class The ethos at Catshill Garage is quite simply “no job is too big or too small, we simply love all things mechanical and pride ourselves on our ability to keep your equipment running whatever the make or model”. A man takes his Rottweiler to the vet. “My dog’s cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him? “ “Well,” says the vet, “let’s have a look at him” So he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then checks his teeth. Finally, he says “I’m going to have to put him down.” “What? Because he’s cross-eyed? “ “No, because he’s really heavy”

So I was in my car, and I was driving along, and my boss rang up, and he said ‘You’ve been promoted.’ And I swerved. And then he rang up a second time and said “You’ve been promoted again.’ And I swerved again. He rang up a third time and said ‘You’re managing director.’ And I went into a tree. And a policeman came up and said ‘What happened to you?’ And I said ‘I careered off the road.

A simple way to protect your business from failure! A recent survey of 50,000 small businesses that has major data loss (laptop stolen, computer crashed or damaged) showed that 43% of them instantly went out of business. Without client or sales data these business collapsed and couldn’t continue. A further 51% closed within two years of the data loss which meant that only a tiny 6% ever recovered and made it past the two years. We all know someone who’s lost data yet we still think it won’t happen to us, be obviously its possible. A business can literally lose everything it has saved on their computers in a blink of an eye. The reasons are varied. At times it occurs after an ample amount of warning signs, other times it comes as a complete surprise. When these moments happen - one can only hope that your files have been saved effectivly elsewhere, otherwise, there is little hope that they can be recovered. The bottom line is it’s better to be safe than to be sorry. There are many ways to bring about a data disaster, and there’s only one way to be prepared for any of them, and that is through backing up your files. These days there is simply no excuse not to backup your data, today it’s simple you can backup over the net, it is safe and secure, far more than your external hard drive waiting to be stolen or your usb drive with un-encrypted data being left on the train. Online backups can be encrypted as you backup and are them held in a secure server room under continual maintaince. As a new member to the HW chamber, Ezbackup would like to offer all members our online backup service free to try for one month. If your happy with our service, which we’re sure you will be, then you can carry on protecting your data for as little as £1 per week (£52 per year). If you require a backup solution tailored for your business, email your details for a free quotation.

Whatever method you choose, remember that backing up your files is very important, and make sure that you do so to protect against the worst. To feature your local stories / events / information here

‘SISTERS ARE DOIN’ IT FOR THEMSELVES’ – WITH HELP FROM BROAD STREET DIY Broad Street DIY in Bromsgrove held its second Ladies Night on 30th September and the event was just as successful as the inaugural one held in May. Guests queued outside the shop entrance in advance of the 6pm start – with the first 30 ladies ‘through the door’ receiving a goody bag packed with free gifts and special offer vouchers. TV celebrities Huntley Thawe (Channel 4’s Renovation game) and Euan ‘AJ’ Rose (from BBC’s The Instant Gardener) entertained budding female DIY-ers with their expert knowledge and live demonstrations. AJ made a special presentation to inform guests of the recommended gardening tasks to be undertaken in preparation for the winter months. Shop staff and local handyman ‘Handy Andy’ were also on hand to answer any questions and demonstrate DIY tasks such as changing a door lock, drilling into brickwork and the correct way to saw a piece of wood. Huntley’s tiling techniques was a particular ‘crowd pleaser’ with ladies eager to learn all about adhesives, spacers and grouting. Darren Waldron, from Waldron Decorators, offered painting tips and local plumber Peter Shepherd showed ladies silicone techniques. Guests enjoyed complimentary refreshments, supplied by Bird’s Brewery and Flavour’s Indian Restaurant. Ladies also had time to browse the store with some great shopping discounts available on the night. Everyone attending was automatically entered into a free prize draw - with the opportunity to buy additional tickets, which raised £60.00 for the Primrose Hospice. A 2014 survey ‘How Britain Shops’ (conducted by Verdict) showed that the proportion of female DIY shoppers keeps increasing - by 1.5 percentage points between 2013 and 2014, as the number of women living alone increases and women generally become more interested in conducting DIY projects themselves. Director Lisa Childs says: “People can save so much money by doing their own home improvements. However, it’s important they know about the correct use of tools and the right materials for a job. Ladies Sometimes feel uncomfortable in a DIY shop environment. We hope our events show them what a friendly and helpful bunch of people we are at Broad Street DIY so they feel more confident in visiting the shop.”
Broad Street DIY is hoping to run another ladies Night in spring 2016. Those interested in attending can contact the shop on: 01527 873 555 or email broadstdiy@aol.com. To feature your local stories / events / information here

NEW BEER BREWED IN MEMORY OF BREWERY BOSS Bromsgrove based Bird’s Brewery has brewed a brand new beer as a fitting tribute to former colleague Steve Hammond, who died unexpectedly from a stroke in September. The beer isn’t a sombre memento but has been brewed as a celebration for a man who had a great passion for craft beer. Named in Steve’s honour, ‘Hammond’s Choice’ is a pleasant dark ale brewed with a combination of Pilgrim, Golding and Celia hops to give a balanced hoppy taste, together with chocolate malt and crystal malt to add a delicate sweetness. “Before his untimely death Steve was working with our head brewer to create a new beer for the people of Bromsgrove, in celebration of our Brewery’s sixth anniversary this year,” says Chris Bird, Managing Director of Bird’s Brewery. “Hammond’s Choice is a development of Steve’s ideas for the anniversary beer. I think we’ve come up with a beer he would have enjoyed and been proud of.” Hammond’s Choice is available to buy in 500ml bottles from the Bird’s Brewery shop on Old Burcot Lane. The Brewery will donate 10p to the Stroke Association for every bottle of Hammond’s Choice sold in the shop until 31st December 2015. The beer will also be available in casks at selected pubs across Worcestershire. For more information call
