Bromsgrove MP Announced as Charity’s Patron MP for Bromsgrove, Sajid Javid, has become Patron of Primrose Hospice. “I am delighted that Sajid Javid has agreed to be a Patron. He has supported this local charity for many years and this accolade is in recognition of the work he does to support Primrose.” The Business Lunch was hosted by television and radio presenter Joanne Malin and raised over £2,500 for Primrose Hospice.
Sajid Javid MP with David Burrell
Mr Javid made the special announcement as guest speaker at the charityʼs networking event at Holiday Inn, Kidderminster Road, on 1st February. He told an audience of over 70 people from Worcestershireʼs business community how privileged he felt to accept the invitation to become the charityʼs patron from Rod Laight, Primroseʼs Chair of Trustees. Mr Javid said: “Rod approached me about becoming patron and obviously I accepted and the reason is because itʼs the same reason weʼre all here today, we know just
how wonderful Primrose is, the huge difference it makes, the difference youʼre making now by supporting this lunch. “And we know, sadly, the people who have benefited from Primrose many have been in the darker moments of their life and Primrose brings in some sunlight and youʼre helping to generate more sunlight today. “So thank you very much for what you do, thank you to Primrose for inviting me to become Patron and I was obviously privileged to accept.” David Burrell, CEO of Primrose Hospice, said:
Guests enjoyed a lively question and answer session with the MP in which he discussed issues affecting Bromsgrove, knife crime and Brexit. There were also lighter moments when he revealed who he thought would win Strictly Come Dancing between himself and PM Theresa May (Mrs May), how realistic BBCʼs Bodyguard was and how he juggles family life and his role as Home Secretary. Primrose Hospice, based in St Godwalds Road, supports life-limited people living in north east Worcestershire and their families as well as those who have experienced a sudden death in the family.

Potato and Broccoli Gratin This hearty vegetable gratin makes a great side dish for a Sunday roast, or a very satisfying vegetarian supper served with crusty bread and a mixed green salad.
Ready in: 1 hour | Serves 4 - 6
Ingredients 750g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks Salt and freshly ground black pepper 225g broccoli florets 1 tbsp olive oil 1 red onion, peeled and cut into thin wedges 25g butter 25g plain flour 300ml milk 150g mature Cheddar, grated 2 tsp Dijon mustard
TIP
Fresh basil leaves, to garnish
Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180F, gas mark 6. Boil the potatoes in a large pan of lightly salted water for 8-10 minutes until almost tender, adding the broccoli to the pan for the last 2-3 minutes of cooking time. Drain well and place in a large shallow ovenproof dish. Heat the oil in a large pan over a high heat and fry the onion for 3-4 minutes until just softened. Scatter the onion over the potatoes and broccoli. Melt the butter in the pan, then stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute until foaming. Remove the pan from the heat and gradually stir in the milk. Return to the heat and bring to the boil, stirring all the time. Reduce the heat and simmer for 1-2 minutes, still stirring, until the sauce is smooth and thickened. Stir in the half the cheese and the mustard and simmer for a further minute. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pour the sauce over the vegetables in the dish and scatter over the rest of the cheese. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until golden and bubbling. Serve garnished with the basil leaves.
Choose a firm, waxy-fleshed potato such as Charlotte or Desiree for this dish, or try sweet potatoes instead.

Improved Facilities for Bromsgrove Pet Owners Customer Care Advisor Laura with Marty
Access to the outside Memorial Pathway and Garden, which for safety reasons has been closed during the building process, will re-open again upon completion of the extension. During the building work the important and special outside Memorial space has been carefully protected.
In addition to the improvements taking place at its veterinary practice, Clent Hills Vets opened its innovative pet fitness and rehabilitation centre in Bromsgrove in May 2018, offering hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, acupuncture and laser therapy.
Clent Hills Vets is undergoing a programme of improvements and development to ensure it continues to deliver an unparalleled level of care to its growing number of clients and pets. Following a recruitment drive in 2018 the team of customer care advisors, nurses and veterinary surgeons has been significantly increased. 14 fully qualified vets now work across the three practices – in Bromsgrove, Hagley and Rubery. With a larger team and more pets to care for comes the need for more space… An extension to the Bromsgrove practice began at the start of 2019 with completion anticipated at the end of April.
Practice manager Rebekka Fiorani said: “We thank all our clients for their patience whilst we work on creating an improved environment for them and their pets. We are very excited about our ʻnew lookʼ practice and know this will result in an even better experience for everyone who visits us in the future.”
The ʻnew lookʼ practice will offer a larger, more comfortable waiting area, as well as two extra consultation rooms. The addition of two extra rooms means Clent Hills Vets will be able to offer more routine appointments and will be trialling a cat-only consult room, which will be beneficial to both cats and dogs - with a welcomed greater degree of separation!
The business also demonstrates a strong commitment to the local community through fundraising support of charitable organisations and a programme of free pet-owner events offering advice on a variety of pet-related subjects. People News Elaine Jordan - The Role of a Funeral Celebrant It was there and then that I knew I wanted to train to become a funeral celebrant. After researching the work and training options, within two days I booked on a training course and I have never looked back.
Many people are not aware of the work of a funeral celebrant and to be totally honest, until three years ago, I had never heard the term myself. Then I attended the funeral of a friendʼs husband that was taken by a celebrant. It was a well-attended service for a well loved, respected man and what struck me was that, although I had only met the man once, I came away feeling I had known him well for some time. The service was warm and welcoming and paid tribute to and celebrated the life of the man we had lost in a way that reflected his values, wishes and beliefs – it was, a ʻlife-centredʼ and bespoke service.
Celebrant led funeral services are very flexible and fit somewhere between those of the clergy and humanists on the spectrum of ministers. Whilst they are not closely linked to any religion or belief in an after-life, the celebrant is more than happy to include hymns, prayers, readings etc. in the service if preferred. In other words, the funeral service can be non-religious or semi-religious. Whilst most of the services take place in a crematorium and sometimes at a graveside, nowhere other than a church is off limits for the celebration of life to take place. Families sometimes choose a venue that had some significance for their loved one, and then proceed to the crematorium or cemetery to say their final farewells.
If you would like to know more about me and the type of funeral services I deliver, then please visit my website or telephone me. I live in Bromsgrove and I am happy to give short talks and meet with members of local organisations, such as churches and the W.I. I enjoy working in our community both as a celebrant and as a volunteer for local charities. I recently received an award for 10 yearsʼ service as a volunteer at the Primrose Hospice – an organisation that is very close to my heart.

TheDifference Differencebetween betweenGood Goodand andBad BadFats Fats The
Petra Boddington explains the difference between good and bad fats and the benefits of healthier food choices. Eat fat to lose fat? This statement alone terrifies most people. For years we have been encouraged to eat low fat, with no mention of the high sugar substitute found in almost all low fat products.
Good fat is easy to digest and makes you feel full. It also helps the body to absorb key vitamins.
therefore itʼs easy to over eat! Those calories can add up quickly so make sure you count them!
Good fat can be found in coconut oil, avocado, oily fish, olive oil, almonds, seeds and eggs to name a few.
Eating good fat will make you feel satisfied, full of energy and sleep better...
Limit saturated fat found in red meat, butter and cheese.
Understanding fat will help you to make healthier food choices.
Avoid bad fat - ʻtrans fatʼ which is found in pastries, cakes, pizzas and many other processed foods.
Good fat can boost your metabolism helping you to lose weight.
Beware though, fat contains more calories than protein and carbs, and is delicious;

Even though we’re closed over the winter this is often the busiest time for the conservation team who carry out a whole host of projects to protect and preserve our collection. This winter has been especially busy as we’ve had specialist painting and textile conservators working on our collection. This year a selection of 16th – 19th century paintings underwent extensive conservation work. This includes checking the paintings’ condition, framing, checking of fixings, surface cleaning, and retouching and varnishing if required. The tapestry from the Front Hall, which partly depicts the mythical story of the founding of ancient Rome, has also been restored by a specialist textile conservator. The tapestry has been taken down, cleaned, re-lined and re-hung to ensure its continued presentation and stability. By carrying out this much-needed work, our aim is to care for and protect this special place for current and future generations to enjoy.

Your first choice in lawn care 2018 was a difficult year for your garden. Extreme weather conditions resulted in lawns that didn’t look their best. As we move towards the growing season, now is the time to start preparing your lawn to get the best out of it. Our seasonal treatments start from just £15*. Due to high demand, and to avoid disappointment, we are advising that you book your treatments early.
If your lawn is beyond repair due to last years sweltering summer, ask us about our Lawn Makeover - the best way to get ‘the GreenThumb lawn.’
For your FREE lawn analysis & no-obligation quote, contact your local branch today.
Simply call 01905 840740 or email worcester@greenthumb.co.uk *Based on a lawn size up to 40m2
