Spiced Bean & Carrot Patties Makes 15
Ready in 35 minutes, plus chilling time
This is a great recipe for meatfree Monday - or any other day of the week! Harissa paste is a fiery hot blend of spices from North Africa sold near the dried herbs in most large supermarkets. If unavailable, replace with 2 tsp curry paste or sun-dried tomato puree.
Ingredients: •
1 tbsp olive oil
•
1 onion, peeled and chopped
•
2 carrots, peeled and grated
•
1tsp harissa paste
•
400g can cannellini beans, drained
•
400g can red kidney beans, drained
•
3 tbsp freshly chopped mint
•
100g fresh wholemeal breadcrumbs
•
Vegetable oil for shallow frying
•
Salad and herb yoghurt dressing, to serve (see TIP)
Heat the olive oil in a frying pan, add the onion and fry for 5 minutes until softened. Cool for 5 minutes then place in a food processor with the carrots, harissa paste, beans, mint and breadcrumbs. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper and process for about 30 seconds until well blended. Shape the mixture into 15 small round patties. Cover and chill for 30 minutes. Shallow fry the patties in hot vegetable oil for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on kitchen paper then serve with salad and dressing. TIP Serve these patties with dark green salad leaves such as baby spinach and watercress with chunks of cooked beetroot. For a quick herb dressing, stir lemon juice and freshly chopped mint into natural yogurt and season to taste.

Retail News ‘Essential DIY Skills’ - For 18 to 30 Year Olds Lisa Childs, a director at Broad Street DIY says: “We are facing a generation of adults unable to handle even the most rudimentary tasks around the home. We believe it is vitally important that young people are equipped with the practical skills which will help them throughout life.”
Perplexed by plumbing? Frustrated by flat pack furniture? Stumped by sloping shelves? Broad Street DIY, in Bromsgrove, is offering a free ʻEssential DIY Skillsʼ event for young people on Thursday 15th February, 6pm - 8pm. The event is open to anyone aged 18 to 30 years. There will be live practical demonstrations showing people how to handle some of the essential DIY tasks around the home. These will include how to unblock a sink, changing a light bulb, putting fixings into plasterboard, and isolating water and electrics.
The event has been planned by the Worcester Road hardware store due to increasing evidence that DIY as an important life skill is in serious decline.
Paul Warren, MD, adds: “The home can be a dangerous place if people donʼt understand how to properly carry out improvements or routine repairs.”
Research undertaken by MORE TH>N home insurance in 2016 showed a 20% reduction in basic DIY knowledge among the ʻmillennialʼ generation 18 to 34 year olds. 30% of young people in Britain donʼt own a tool box; a staggering one in every five admits to being unable to change a light bulb; 26% of Millennials struggle with flat pack furniture and over half canʼt unblock a drain.
The event is free but people must pre-register due to limited places. There will be a free good bag for the first 20 people through the door on the night. To reserve a place: email broadstdiy@aol.com or call 01527 873555

An award-winning Bromsgrove restaurant will be turning purple for a night when it hosts a special fundraising dinner on Monday 29th January, to raise money for The Stroke Association. Guests are asked to wear something purple for the event, which takes place at Spice Valley Balti on Worcester Road. Chef Muhammad Uddin will prepare a special three course dinner with an elegant fusion of Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine. The evening also features plenty of entertainment with singer Alicia Benbow performing live as guests arrive.
Tristan Harris, editor of the Bromsgrove and Droitwich Standard newspapers, will perform a stand up comedy routine which guarantees plenty of laughs. His set recounts hilarious tales of the characters he has met, the situations he has found himself in and stories he has written during his 16 year career in journalism. There will also be a raffle with some great prizes on offer, donated by local businesses.
Ruth Tandy, West Midlands Community and Events Fundraiser for the Stroke Association said: “We are delighted and incredibly grateful that Spice Valley Balti has chosen to raise money for the Stroke Association. The money will help to support people who are living with the effects of stroke, as well as their families and carers.” Tickets for the event cost just £20 and are available at the restaurant between 5.30pm and 11pm, seven days a week. Spaces are limited so buy your tickets now for this wonderful evening of fun, food and fundraising. For more information call: 01527 578989

Fundraising News Panto Raises over £2000 for Charity The rest of the cast never failed to disappoint the audience as they repeatedly delivered corny jokes with tongue-in-cheek confidence.
L-R] Nicola Pitt (Scarecrow), Sophie Hilton (Dorothy), Will Trewarman (Harry Trotter), Janet Morgan (The Cinnamon Trust), Alun Edwards (Aunt Em), Leah Paddock (Lion) and Joao Teotonio (Tinman). [Front row] Sarah Male (Toto).
A star-studded cast of local vets, nurses and customer care advisors entertained over 200 people on December 2, when they performed a special adaptation of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at Fairfield Village Hall in Bromsgrove. The event raised over £2000 for charity. The pantomime, which brought staff together from across Clent Hills Vetsʼ practices in Bromsgrove, Rubery and Hagley, was a fundraising initiative for The Cinnamon Trust – a national charity for the elderly, terminally ill and their pets.
The Trust was Clent Hills Vetsʼ nominated charity for 2017 and staff had been raising money throughout the year with a variety of fundraising projects, culminating in the Christmas panto. The show delivered everything you would expect from a pantomime and head vet Alun Edwards was hilarious as the dame playing Aunt Em. Vet Joao Teotonio was a visual spectacle as the Tinman, wearing a punk-rock style silver metallic costume with face and hands sprayed silver. Vet Will Trewarmanʼs Freddie Mercury impression earned rapturous applause.
Janet Morgan, a volunteer for The Cinnamon Trust, said: “It was a tremendous show. You could see how much hard work had taken place to stage such an ambitious production. We are very grateful for the support shown to the Trust by Clent Hills Vets.” A total of £2055 was raised by ticket sales and a raffle. Beauty Baby It’s Cold Outside
by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk Our pick of nourishing beauty goodies to see you through the winter months. Central heating, cold weather and seasonal celebrations can leave your skin looking a bit ‘meh’. Murad’s HydraGlow Aqua Peel can help to put some life back into it. First off – the Retexturizing Swab (basically a large cotton bud infused with lactic and glycolic acids) to exfoliate your skin. Follow with the Moisture Infusion Mask, which contains Hyaluronic Acid to lock in moisture and plump skin. Don’t let the words ‘peel’ and acid’ put you off, this is a gentle, pain-free solution to softer, healthier looking skin. I was really impressed with the results. The only downside is the sachets aren’t available individually – they come in a box of four at £40 from www.murad. co.uk. Battling with frizzy hair and split ends? Deep-conditioning treatments are ideal if you have the time. If you’re more of a grab and go kind of girl, try RPR’s Smooth My Ends Treatment. It’s a leave-in conditioner and works to smooth hair, add shine and repair split ends. The treatment is also ideal for detangling if you have really curly hair (or a child who hates having their hair brushed). It’s £13.95 from www.lookfantastic.com. can tackle mascara and other makeup, without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Cleansers that are too harsh can leave
your skin feeling tight, uncomfortable and unbalanced. PHB Ethical Beauty’s Cleansers are gentle, effective and packed with extra ingredients to really nourish your skin. The Hydrating Cleanser, £14.95, is particularly helpful if you suffer from dry patches. Ingredients include coconut oil, shea butter, apricot extract and both rosehip and rose petal oil. Numerous clinical tests have shown skin texture, scarring and wrinkles. As an added bonus, they make the cleanser smell really luxurious. See www. phbethicalbeauty.co.uk. Neal’s Yard are moving away from the anti-ageing approach taken by most beauty companies, and instead focusing on ‘ageing well’. Their Frankincense Intense Lift Serum (£75) and new Frankincense Intense Lift Cream (£65) are full of natural, skin-loving ingredients to help you to ‘look and feel the best version of you, no matter your age.’ I’ve been using them for a month now and my skin feels much softer, smoother and altogether more loved. Admittedly the serum and cream are not cheap, but they are very rich, so a little goes a long way. I expect them to last for a good six months. Available from www. nealsyardremedies.com. If you’re looking for a new foundation that gives you great coverage, without making you look too ‘made-up’, try Nude By Nature’s Flawless Liquid Foundation. It’s available in 20 different shades, is easy to apply and you’ll barely know you’re wearing it. It’s also packed with antioxidants and other skin-loving ingredients. I’m a sucker for pretty packaging, and this foundation is hard to beat in that respect. You’ll want to display it rather than hide it away in a makeup bag. It costs £25 from www. debenhams.com or buy direct from www. nudebynature.com.

We may be closed over the winter but our conservation team are still hard at work carrying out the deep clean of the house ready for when we re-open in spring. During the closed months paintings are sent away for specialist conservation, all of the brown wood furniture is dusted and museum wax is used to clean iron, steel, copper and brass which provides a protective seal for the next season.

Music News Rock School Gig Showcased Young Talent
Fifteen young people from Bromsgrove Rock School took part in a live gig at St John’s Middle School on Saturday 9th December, showcasing the tremendous talent of the different musicians and vocalists with a variety of music genres. FOSI opened the show with three songs, including a light-hearted version of Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars entitled 'Jeff the Chicken'. Freya and Storm created some delightful harmonies during their cover of Journey's ʻDon't Stop Believingʼ before Nathan, Peter Jack and Matt did the first of their two sets. They proved they were solid musicians and Matt's drum solos were particularly impressive.
Margaux, Harry and Jake performed Nirvana's ʻLithiumʼ and The Killers' ʻSmile Like You Mean Itʼ . Harry and Jake were sound on drums and guitar. Dylan and Jack's rendition of ʻBloodstreamʼ by Ed Sheeran was given a good reception from the crowd but the performance of the night was Freya and Jack's version of ʻFairytale of New Yorkʼ which both closed and stole the show. £84 was raised for the David Morgan Trust from £2 entry donations provided by the audience. The trust was created by the late David Morgan, a Bromsgrove District Councillor for 16 years. He set the trust up when he retired from teaching in 1978 so it could help young people who want to study music.
Isabelle Jackson from junior band FOSI on vocals
Jack and Freya stole the show with ʻFairytale of New Yorkʼ
