Sweet Recipe Doughnuts Makes 16 Ready in 1 hour (plus proving time)

Home-made doughnuts are easier to make than you may think! Serve warm rolled in sugar with chocolate sauce to dip for an extra-special sweet treat. They are best eaten on the day of making.

Ingredients: • 175ml milk • 25g butter • 350g strong plain flour, plus extra for dusting and kneading • ½ tsp salt • 1½ tsp easy-blend dried yeast • 75g caster sugar • 1 medium egg, beaten • Vegetable oil for deep frying • Chocolate sauce, warmed, for dipping (optional)

TIP For jam-filled doughnuts, place 3tbsp raspberry jam in a piping bag fitted with a plain nozzle. Insert the tip of a knife into each doughnut and twist to make a hole. Push the tip of the nozzle in the hole and pipe about 1tsp of jam into each doughnut.

1. Place the milk and butter in a small saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted. Cool for 5 minutes.

2. Sift the flour into a large bowl and stir in the salt, yeast and 25g of the caster sugar. Pour in the milk mixture and beaten egg and mix to a soft dough. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-6 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding a little more flour if needed.

3. Place the dough in a bowl, cover and leave in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper.

4. Knock back the dough and divide and shape into 16 balls. Place, well spaced, on the baking sheets and cover with lightly oiled cling film. Leave in a warm place for 15-20 minutes until puffy.

5. Half fill a large deep pan with vegetable oil and heat to 180°C/350°F, or until a cube of bread dropped in the hot fat browns in 30 seconds. Fry the doughnuts, 4-5 at a time, for 1-2 minutes on each side or until puffed and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.

6. Spread the rest of the sugar on a flat plate and roll each hot doughnut in the sugar to coat. Serve warm with chocolate sauce to dip.

A great kitchen is more than just a place to cook, but can also be the hub of the home. Good looks are important, but function is vital, especially when trying to maximise space. The key to success is plenty of research and careful planning. The starting point for any kitchen design is to ask yourself lots of questions. First, who will use the room, and how – family meals, lots of entertaining or just the occasional microwave dinner? And what about other activities – homework, watching TV, doing the laundry? Do you have lots of kitchen gadgets, and will you keep them on worktops or in cupboards? Do you prefer solid or glass-fronted cupboards, or open shelves? ill you have some unfitted

elements, such as a dresser or sideboard? Would you prefer built-in or free-standing appliances? As you gather the answers to these questions, a bigger picture should start to emerge. You may even wish to start a scrapbook of images (you can do this online as well as on paper) and sketch out a scaled plan of the kitchen on graph paper. Be sure to mark in the position of doors, windows, radiators and power points, and experiment with different layouts to suit the space available (see below). Next, start thinking about colour, pattern and texture, and how to co-ordinate cupboards with worktops, flooring, lighting and tiling. Don’t forget the sink

and taps, as well as details such as knobs and handles, the splashback and window treatments. Now is the time for research, research and more research. Look at magazines and websites for ideas, ask friends and family what works or doesn’t work in their own kitchens, and visit every showroom within reach. When comparing retailers’ prices, check exactly what’s included – design and planning, disposal of e isting fittings, plumbing and electrical work, associated building work, fitting flooring, tiling, carpentry – and whether or not there is a guarantee or after-sales service. Finally, don t skimp on fitting. Poor fitting really shows, whereas a really good fitter can make even an average kitchen look truly fabulous. PLanning a kiTchen Deciding where the sink will go is often a good way to start when designing a kitchen. Then place the main food preparation area between the sink and the hob, making sure that this worktop space is large enough to serve up a meal, and has plenty of power points nearby for mi ers/blenders and other small appliances. Try to put the dishwasher near the sink, too. epending on your type of hob/ cooker, you may need to place it against an exterior wall or chimney for easy extraction. As for the fridge, it’s a nice idea to position it, if you can, at the end of a run of cupboards so that other members of the family

Summer of Rock for Young Musicians Thirteen year old Storm Cox performed her own original composition ʻRollercoasterʼ, supported by Phoebe Gates and Jake Longley. Phoebe closed the show with two acoustic numbers which demonstrated the strong talent and confidence of the teenage musician.

[L-R] Jake Longley, Phoebe Gates & Storm Cox

Young musicians from Bromsgrove Rock School enjoyed a rocking good summer with live gigs in June, July and August. Their summer of rock kicked off with an outdoor performance in glorious sunshine at the Primrose Hospice summer fete on 30th June. On 8th July they took to the stage again for Bromsgrove Rock Schoolʼs end of term gig, at The Rocklands Social Club in Redditch. The audience enjoyed a varied mix of cover songs including ʻLet You Downʼ (NF), ʻHold Back the Riverʼ (James Bay), ʻWild Thingʼ (The Troggs), ʻThe Only Exceptionʼ (Paramore).

The gig raised £94.20 for The David Morgan Trust.

Junior band FOSI on stage at The Rocklands Social Club

One of the highlights of the show was a truly entertaining and accomplished rendition of ʻGrace Kellyʼ (MIKA) performed by Dylan Rees, Freya Richardson and Jack McEvilly. The audience also enjoyed junior band FOSIʼs humourous signature song ʻJeff The Chickenʼ to the tune of Snow Patrolʼs ʻChasing Carsʼ.

Members of the Rock School then performed at Avoncroft Museum on 25th August, as part of the Sounds Amazing Festival. Bromsgrove Rock School, run by Brian Hoggard, welcomes young musicians and singers aged 8 to18. For information about joining call 07720 211002. @BromsgroveRockSchool (facebook).

Broad Street DIY is asking local people to pop into its shop on Worcester Road to donate any leftover foreign currency from holidays abroad this summer, to help a Bromsgrove charity. All main currencies will be accepted, such as Euros and Dollars, as well as discontinued pre-euro currencies that might be tucked away at the back of a drawer in your home – French francs, Italian lira, German deutschmarks, Spanish pesetas or Greek drachma.

Broad Street DIY will use a specialist foreign exchange firm to convert the currency to cash, donating the money to Dodford Childrenʼs Holiday Farm - itʼs 2018 nominated charity. The Farm offers residential stays for children from inner city schools, nurseries and special schools, providing an opportunity for them to enjoy life outdoors on the farm. According to a report in the Daily Mirror in 2017 each British household has, on average, £65 of unused travel money lying around!

“Nearly everyone comes home from holiday with some coins which they canʼt exchange at the bank, or with a few low denomination notes which just arenʼt worth exchanging,” said Lisa Childs, a director at Broad Street DIY. She added: “Weʼve had a tremendous response so far and will announce the total amount raised in October. Please pop in and donate your spare currency.” You can take your foreign currency into Broad Street DIY at any time until 30th September.

Versatility Pays Off for Local Printer

[L-R] David Chill, Beth & Tyler Jackson, Jo Insull, Lisa Bridge, Sarah Thompson and Steve Inman

A versatile business approach has paid off for a Bromsgrove printing company which celebrated its fifteenth anniversary in July. Versatility In Print (VIP), based on Buntsford Park Road, has developed its offering over the years to meet the changing needs of a wide customer base. With a traditional printingbased heritage the business expanded in 2008 with the opening of Ribbon Writer – which sells ribbon printing machines, software and supplies, with a backup support service.

Thanks to a grant from the Hereford and Worcester Chamber of Commerce in 2014 /15 the Ribbon Writer division of VIP is now a market leader with distributors in South Africa, Cyprus, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Iceland, Croatia and Bulgaria. Expansion abroad enabled the business to take on an apprentice in June, on a fifteen-month contract. VIP also specialises in bespoke short run hot foil printing and established HOT Foil UK in 2016, selling new and refurbished hot foil machines and printing supplies.

HOT Foil UK is the only company operating in the UK offering a full training programme for customers who wish to learn how to foil print and set up their own small business. VIP owner David Chill said: “The business has grown significantly since we moved to Bromsgrove in 2016. Our development into new areas has helped ensure our success during some difficult trading times. Our strong team is delighted to have reached this fifteen year milestone.”

THE CHI CHI SHOPPING EXPERIENCE In 2016 Debbie had a vision. Along with her great friend Gerry and with the support of family and friends they transformed an old building in Lickey, formerly the old Post Office, into a beautiful gifts and interiors boutique. Chi Chi Gifts and Interiors, named in honour of the owner’s late sister, first opened its doors in January 2017. The boutique reflects Chi Chi’s quirky, unique, positive personality. handbags, interior accessories, soft furnishings, lighting and larger pieces of furniture. The delightful interior has also proved popular with those seeking inspiration for a stylish make over at home. Where else might you find a fluffy Tibetan lambsʼ wool bottle cooler? The success of Chi Chi is partly based on its expert buying team, who handpick beautiful vintage and contemporary products from around the world as well as the UK. The boutique also supports local artists and has worked with entrepreneurial artisans who want their products showcased in the right setting to reach discerning customers.

The small team at Chi Chi have brought a wealth of customer service experience to the local area, with staff having previously worked for Disney and Emirates, as well as charitable enterprises and running a very successful coffee shop. Their mission is to deliver a high level of personal service, encouraging customers to buy products which they love, meaning they will love them forever! Since opening nineteen months ago, Chi Chi has developed a strong reputation in the area with loyal customers retuning time and again to purchase gifts of jewellery,

Like all new businesses Chi Chi is on a journey and recent developments are aimed at establishing it as a destination venue. By popular demands the boutique introduced Barista coffee and home baked cakes for its customers in August, and the bigger vision is to develop Café Chi Chi further in the future. Chi Chiʼs online presence has also been developed over the past few months, thanks to Debbieʼs nephew Sam Owers as a gift to Chi Chi. Sam runs his own consultancy ʻGet Socialʼ http://getsocial.com/ Whether youʼre looking to buy a £10 gift for a friend or a more luxurious item for the home, Chi Chi has exclusive items for anyone wanting to buy something special. Owner Debbie said: “We put a huge value on the shopping experience and, as part of a small business community, are working hard to help boost the local economy. Encouraging people to shop locally has wide reaching benefits, helping with mental health, wellbeing and happiness which cannot be under estimated in a world where online shopping is becoming the norm.”

Chi Chi offers free customer parking directly in front of the shop and there is ample parking on the opposite side of the road. The boutique is also working closely with Ardi and his team from Lickey Hills Car Wash (next to the shop). Customers can choose to have their car washed / valeted whilst they visit Chi Chi for shopping and a cup of coffee with cake. It is a perfect example of a great collaboration between two local businesses and reinforces Chi Chiʼs position at the heart of the community. The team invites you to visit the boutique and youʼll be guaranteed a very warm welcome in the true style of Chi Chi. Riders Raise £7000 for Primrose Hospice

Nick Griffin with his son Ethan

[L-R] Sid, Phil Witherford & Nick

The annual Retro Run, held on 15th July, saw 200 people take part in a 7.5 mile road race to raise money for the Primrose Hospice. The Retro Run, which was started in 2011 by Sid Griffin and his friend Darren Latin Smith, aims to raise much needed funds for a different charity each year. These charities are either local, underfunded or have a personal connection. Participants in this family event travel the route on old school bikes, such as Choppers, BMXs and Grifters.

This years event, organised by Sidʼs brother Nick and Wesley Gardiner, truly captured the whole community spirit with all walks of life coming together to chat, ride and fundraise. The ride starts and finishes at The Nailers Arms in Bournheath and takes a 7.5 mile round trip via Fairfield and Belbroughton. Riders stop at pubs on the way, collecting money. Money is also raised via an entry fee, T-shirt sales, sponsorship on the back of the T-shirts, wristbands and raffles - with prizes donated by local businesses.

Nick Griffin said: “Iʼd like to thank all the riders and everyone who helped with organising the event. Special thanks also go to Phil and Shula Witherford and all their staff at the Nailers Arms, for being so supportive.” The 2018 Retro Run raised over £7000 for the Primrose Hospice. A total of nearly £28,000 has now been raised since 2011. If you are interested in sponsoring the 2019 event please get in touch: facebook.com/theretrorunbikeride, or email: theretrorun2011@gmail.com

Twitter @NTCoughton www.facebook.com/CoughonCourt

There are two orchards here at Coughton on either side of the vegetable garden which are comparatively young but contain lots of old varieties. The hedge on one side of the vegetable garden consists of apple trees being trained into a diamond formation. While you meander through the orchard see if you can identify the pear, quince, plum, gage, medlar, damson, cherry, nut and of course apples trees. There are 78 apple trees, 17 plum trees and a smaller number of the other types. Apples will be available to buy as they ripen both ready picked and pick your own, the perfect excuse to make a warming apple pie or crumble when you get home. There are also lots of flowers out in the garden during the autumn months. We are well known for our roses but there are also dahlias, phlox and many more. Enjoy them before the frosts take them away.
