Welcome to 2018! It’s a fresh start to a new year. For many people, it is the beginning of something new – new habits, new hobbies and new direction. Our short course selections are designed to help us educate, enrich lives and secure economic futures. Each semester we offer more than 100 short courses that meet anywhere from a few hours over one day to a few days a week. Classes include topics that are for both personal enrichment and professional development. For instance, are you interested in obtaining a health care certification? We have programs that prepare you for in-demand careers such as a Home Health Aide, a Nurse Aide and an Emergency Medical Technician. Maybe you’d like to become a real estate agent? You can take the prep courses here with us. Manufacturing continues to be on the rise throughout the Meridian district and the nation. We offer training in the areas of computer aided drafting, welding and machining. Ideas for many of our most popular courses come from you – the people we are here to serve. If there’s something you’d like to see us offer, let us know. Whatever your plans are for the year, we hope that Meridian Technology Center can be a part of them.

BUSINESS Emotional Intelligence The New Measure of Success

ELEV TE

Emotional intelligence is quite the buzz phrase of the business world recently, and for good reason. Are you ready to understand the impact of this concept in the workplace? In this session, you will learn how successful employees use a combination of their IQ (job skills, knowledge) and EQ (behaviors) to successfully navigate their career development. We will also discuss the elements of emotional intelligence and explore which aspects of EQ each participant is strong in or would like to further develop. 4/10

Finish - Give Yourself the Gift of Done Do you feel like you (or your coworkers) start a million things but rarely finish them? Why is that? Many people think the problem is that they aren’t trying hard enough, so they get up earlier, guzzle energy drinks or hire a life coach. For many, though, nothing works. In this session, based on the book by the same title, you’ll learn something surprising: The most effective strategies to help people complete their goals are not those that pushed people to work harder. The ones that got people to the finish line did just the opposite— they took the pressure off. If you’re tired of being a chronic starter and want to become a consistent finisher, you have two options: You can continue to beat yourself up and try harder, since this time that will work, or you can come to this session and give yourself the gift of done. 5/08

Leadercast The world is looking for great leaders to follow. In order to become those leaders to the outside, we have to lead ourselves first. We must walk the walk. How do you lead yourself effectively? How do you develop your core principles and values so that your leadership is an outpouring of your innermost self? And how much more will those who follow you benefit from your leadership when you lead yourself well? Leadercast will help you explore these questions and more. The speakers who will take the stage will inspire you to lead yourself, so you can lead your families, your organizations and your communities. Earlybird pricing of $69 when enrolled by Wednesday, February 28, 2018. Enrollment goes to $79 on Thursday, March 1, 2018. 5/11

Tipping Sacred Cows: Kick Bad Habits that Masquerade as Virtues “Sacred cows” exist and are revered in every workplace – they are the conventional wisdom concepts that tell you to try your best, work well with others and produce excellent work. But these cherished nuggets of advice, in practice, have a dark side that can lead to unintended consequences. During this interactive session, Rebecca Eastham, Executive Director of Business and Industry Services at Meridian Technology Center, will explore some dangerous ways your virtues as a leader can backfire. Based on the bestselling book by Jake Breeden, Eastham will focus on strategies to overcome the allure and achieve real results related to Breeden’s seven common sacred cows at work: balance, collaboration, creativity, excellence, fairness, passion and preparation. 1/26

Why Personal Drive Matters When you think about the leaders you most admire, chances are high that a strong level of personal drive will be among their main qualities. A leader who is hard-wired with internal motivation can: • Consistently turn big ideas into action • Overcome obstacles even when circumstances are less than ideal • Set the tone for others regarding expectations and results. This session will equip you with strategies to push forward as a leader and strengthen your own personal drive, so you can consistently deliver strong results. 2/23

center for business development Support for Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses The process of converting an idea into a business venture requires intensity, focus and a support network. Our mission is to help entrepreneurs build strong businesses, and we do that in three ways.

Center for Business Development

Business Consulting & Coaching We provide business consulting and coaching to early-stage companies and aspiring entrepreneurs. We’ll help you explore the feasibility of an idea, identify a new market for your product or service, evaluate your marketing, understand how to hire the right employees and more. Business Incubation When You’re Starting a Business Business incubation is a focused process that includes management guidance, technical assistance and consulting for young, growing companies. Entrepreneurs can locate their business in the Center for Business Development as a residential or virtual tenant. Residential tenants have access to services and rent dedicated office or lab space for up to three years. Virtual tenants have access to our services but do not rent space. Entrepreneur Training and Events Why learn from your mistakes if you don’t have to? We provide several opportunities for entrepreneurs and small business owners to listen and learn from each other. We also partner with local chambers of commerce to bring education and training events to the communities we serve.
