Course Catalog 2021 Winter / Spring

Last year Meridian Technology Center launched Climb Higher, a campaign intended to inspire the students, businesses and communities we serve. Our focus centered on our role in providing education and training that will help residents of our district reach their next goal or their next achievement. We want to be a partner in your journey – no matter where you are headed. There is no question that the events of 2020 have disrupted our daily lives and, in many cases, have given us more time to reflect on our personal and professional goals. As I talk to friends and colleagues, many are taking the opportunity to read more, to participate in guided discussion groups, or to take advantage of other personal/professional development opportunities. We would invite you to let Meridian be a part of your journey to reach your educational goals. We are committed to helping you and others Climb Higher through our diverse range of programming which includes: • Developing new community partnerships and programs to help small businesses navigate the challenges of the economic crisis from the pandemic. • Establishing BE READY, an online program to help job seekers sharpen their skills and earn nationally recognized certifications. • Serving 100+ educators through Technovation for Education (T4E), a professional development program for teachers, administrators and other school personnel. • Opening a 24,000-square-foot addition for students enrolled in Meridian’s STEM Academy. • Transitioning traditional in-person instruction and training to virtual platforms. As we enter 2021, I want to remind you that no matter what journey you’re embarking on, we are here to help you Climb Higher. Whether you want to explore a new hobby, brush up on technical skills or retrain for a new career, this catalog is filled with classes that can help you learn more, do more and be more. If there’s something you’d like to see us offer that could help you reach your goals, I invite you to let us know.

The Ego Trip (Up): How Decision Fatigue Leaves Us Depleted

Have you ever sat through a difficult conversation and remained emotionally collected, then struggled to make a decision for the remainder of the day? Have you ever planned, shopped, and prepped your groceries for the week, and then looked at your overflowing refrigerator and instead ordered pizza? What about needing to go back to bed after you have gotten everyone where they need to go in the morning instead of facing the day head on? These are all real, and completely normal situations...and have something in common...decision fatigue. In this session, individuals will hear about the effects of decision fatigue, and what they can do to help recognize, prepare for, and potentially alleviate the exhaustion that comes with this process. 1/12

Actionable Accountability

Quint Studer said, “Clear and consistent communication can work magic in an organization but only if leaders have the courage and skills to set clear expectations and hold all individuals accountable.” The lack of accountability is rampant in society today. Why are we afraid to hold people accountable, both at work and in our personal lives? In Actionable Accountability, you will learn actionable tools to improve accountability as well as best practices to drive better results. You’ll see what the “magic” that comes from setting expectations, communication and holding others accountable can do for you, your work team and your organization. 3/9

The Power of Emotional Intelligence

What is the formula for success at your job? As a spouse? A parent? As part of your community? Emotional intelligence (EI) is the unique repertoire of emotional skills that we use to navigate the everyday challenges of life. Research has demonstrated that our EI or (EQ) is often a more accurate predictor of success than our IQ. No matter how intellectually intelligent we are, our success is still governed by how well we communicate our ideas and interact with our peers. This course will give you the foundational knowledge to help you understand how to leverage current skill strengths and recognize opportunities for development. 3/23

Based on the book of the same name, this session will make the case to anyone striving to succeed that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a special blend of passion and persistence called “grit.” We will discuss what goes through our brains when we fail, and how that—not talent or luck—makes all the difference. Come learn how to strengthen your own level of grit and how this can impact every facet of your life! 4/14

High stakes conversations can be tricky, even in the best of settings. What about when we have those difficult conversations in a virtual world? In a virtual world, it seems these can go from being difficult conversations to impossible conversations, but when the stakes are high these important conversations need to take place regardless of the setting. Whether you are collaborating with a colleague or advising a client, high stakes conversations help all of us improve and reach our goals. This session will engage participants while they learn principles to help lead or participate effectively in high stakes conversations online. 2/23

Fear of Failure: Why Perfectionism Stops Us in Our Tracks

“No!” “Stop!” “Don’t even begin!” “If you never start, then you cannot fail!” The words perfectionism speaks into our minds are harsh ones. We are fooled into thinking that if we never begin, or procrastinate, or focus solely on the results, we cannot stumble. So, what do we do about these messages and ideas we have trained ourselves to hear when we inevitably falter? In this session, you will learn how to identify perfectionist tendencies (We all have them!), and what to do when the fear of failing begins to creep in. 4/27

Essentialism: Disciplined Pursuit - McKeown

Have you ever found yourself stretched too thin? Do you simultaneously feel overworked and underutilized? Are you often busy but not productive? Do you feel like your time is constantly being hijacked by other people’s agendas? If you answered yes to any of these, the concepts discussed in Greg McKeown’s book “Essentialism” can offer you a way out. This book explores a systematic discipline for discerning what is absolutely essential, then eliminating everything that is not so you can make the highest possible contribution toward the things that really matter. Essentialism is not one more thing - it’s a whole new way of doing everything. It’s about doing less, but better, in every area of our lives. Essentialism is a movement whose time has come. Join us for an engaging book club discussion regarding the concepts the book explores and how we can actively utilize them in our day-to-day lives. 1/28
