Brookwood Junior High School ELA — Students will be learning poetry terms twice a week throughout the month by critically analyzing different influential african american poems. Students will focus ont the history of African-American poetry spotlighting some of the classic poets in your poetry lessons: Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Lucille Clifton, Gwendolyn Brooks, Arna Bontemps, Phyllis Wheatley, Paul Laurence Dunbar. Math — Students will pick an honorable african american; create a timeline of their life including 10 events (will use fractions to assure the timeline increments are accurate); they will write a half page paper on why they look up to that person; - Athletes: they must create a graph/table of their statistics - Influential person: they must create a concept map of how that individual’s achievements have led to further benefits; students will learn about famous African Americans that have positively contributed in the area of Mathematics such as Katherine Johnson (hidden figures), Fern Hunt, Valerie Thomas and Mae Carol Jemison. Social Studies — 7th grade Social Studies classes will be doing poetry readings. Students will be taped and will appear on our weekly video broadcasts, and will perform in our black history program: topics are: Little Rock 9, Birmingham bombing, Frederick Douglas, Harriet Beecher Stowe, the Black Panthers, “Say It Loud” - James Brown and black empowerment, Jim Crow Laws, Nat Turner, John Brown ; 8th grade will be doing a weekly celebration activity highlighting black history moments in the 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries in America, including: end of the atlantic slave trade, Booker T. Washington vs W.E.B. Du Bois, biography of Bayard Rustin, and Obama’s DNC speech 2004. Science — The Science team will teach a lesson every week on a famous african american STEM scientists on famous Fridays. We are researching Scientists, Technologists, Engineers, and Mathematicians. We will call it “Famous Fridays”. PE — Athlete Spotlights: Who are they? What Sport did they play? List Major Accomplishments, How does learning about this athlete inspire and motivate you? What kind of activism/ philanthropy work did this athlete contribute to? Music — Students will learn about African American musicians including Scott Joplin, W.C. Handy, William Grant Still, and more. Students will learn about famous or important African American musicians who have positively impacted music in U.S. History. Art — Students will choose a medium project from several black artists and African influenced pieces. Artists include: JeanMichel Basquiet, Robert Duncanson, Brian Stelfreeze, Kara Walker, Selma Burke, Faith Ringgold, Lorna Simpson, self-portrait piece, Alma Thomas, short bell ringer Selma Burke, bell ringer (ties into the choice project above), Michelle Obama, favorite children’s book bell ringer; Students will learn about famous or important African American artists and how they positively impacted the world of art. School-Wide On-Going- Morning announcements - Black History trivia questions will be read every day during morning announcements for the month of February. A weekly winner will be announced and will receive a coupon for one free item from the concession stand. •

2/3/20 - Black History Poetry Night at Glenwood-Lynwood Library (BJHS Student Performances)

“What Black History Means to Me” essays and artwork will be on display at the Glenwood-Lynwood Library & on February 26th there will be an open house at the library from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. showcasing our students’ essays and artwork.

Brookwood Middle School Daily Announcements: • Quotes in announcements every day. Classroom Activities: • This year we are doing a tribute to African American Military Heroes; • Locker decorations with military ribbons; • Black History Program - African American Military Heroes; • Speaker; • Daily mini-lessons about famous African American military heroes in Social Studies and ELA.

Hickory Bend Elementary School Daily Announcements: • Daily Morning Black History Facts (students will participate in morning announcements). Classroom Activities: • Classroom poster decorating contest; • Friday, February 7th - Black History Costume Parade (students dress up as their favorite Famous African American); • Friday, February 14th - HBCU Assembly; • Monday, February 24th - HBCU/ Greek Day (students will wear Historical Black College Gear or Greek attire); • Tuesday, February 25th - Soul Train Day (students will wear Motown inspired wear); • Wednesday, February 26th - Color of Unity (students will wear their assigned color of red, black yellow and green per grade level); • Wednesday, February 26th - African American Dancer Building Assembly; • Thursday, February 27th - Icon Day (students will dress as their favorite African American role models, past or present); • Each student will receive a bracelet, pencil along with a package of African American historical facts.

Longwood Elementary School Daily Announcements: • Each classroom received a calendar with a person from Black History focused on each day. Each day information about the focused person will be announced over morning announcements and extended in a lesson by the classroom teacher. Classroom Activities: • The library has set up a display section celebrating Black History Month with books for checkout; • Music/PE will come together to celebrate music and dance evolution in Black History. This dance activity will occur in every specials class beginning February 17th; • Each K-4 classroom received a picture book highlighting Black History for teacher read-aloud sessions. The 4th grade also received the chapter book, Hidden Figures, to read aloud to the class; • On February 26th, the staff is having a soul food potluck in the library; • On February 26th, the South Chicago Dance Theatre is performing “Dancing Through the Great Migration”, which will be an interactive dance assembly for all grade levels; • After the dance assembly, there will be a trivia contest based on the important people in Black History that were showcased each day on daily announcements; • Classroom teachers have submitted lesson plans for their individual activities on the Google Classroom.
