DECEMBER 2020
#BrookwoodStrong As we begin December, I look back and think how quickly this school year has gone so far! We look forward to being able to return to onsite learning. We are hoping that it will be safe enough to return back for the second half of this school year. As we receive updates from the IDPH, the CDC and ISBE the Superintendent will keep all of our parents updated. There are some important upcoming dates during December that you need to be aware of. On December 7th, 8th, and 9th, our students will participate in a “LIVE”, interactive virtual health program presented by Candor Health Education. Personnel from Candor Health Education will virtually present their program targeted to adolescent youth. 7th and 8th grade students will be participating in the “Science Behind Drugs: Decisions” program.
In this program, the students will: • Understand how alcohol, vaping, marijuana, opioid pain medication, and poly drug use (combination of drugs) affect the brain and body • Analyze the impact of drug use on short/long term goals and a deeper understanding of brain development

On December 9th at 6:00 p.m. we will be having a virtual “Family Reading Night”. Families will be able to participate in fun Reading activities. We will also be raffling off prizes so please participate! While we are remote learning, student engagement matters. Lack of participation by your child even if online can be marked as an absence. Please be sure your child is ready to learn, has their camera on, and is sitting up properly with all needed materials ready! We are implementing a new procedure for 2nd quarter. If your child is receiving a “D” or an “I” in any of their classes, they will need to remain on camera while the teacher is on live teaching. If they are not on camera, we will be contacting you to let you know your child is not engaged in the lesson. Students need to be present and participating in order to be engaged and for learning to take place. We want our students to be successful! It is important to stay connected and it is a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and discuss their strengths and areas for improvement. If your child needs an electronic device, or if you have any questions or concerns, I can be reached at the school number (708) 758-5252, by email jlarson@brookwood167.org or by cell phone, (708) 362-0115.

WHAT A SUCCESS!!!
Brookwood Junior High School’s “Virtual Family Math Night” was held on Wednesday, November 11th from 6:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m. A Google Classroom was created and a link was posted for students and their families to join. When families logged on at 6:00 p.m., administrators and staff greeted them and explained they would be participating in a Math, Order of Operations, Escape Room. After a quick review of the Order of Operations by Mr. Broderick, Math Teacher, each family was put into a breakout room to begin their escape. Two (2) staff members were assigned to each breakout room, to help families in case they got stuck or if they needed help. Six (6) Math games were raffled off during the night. Math resources were included on the Google Classroom for families to use and the links were also posted for the escape rooms and made available for families to continue to use after the event ended. Everyone that participated had a great time. Our goal is to have one “Virtual Family Math and Reading Night” a month.
