NEWSLETTER MAY
BROOKWOOD JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL FAMILIES, HAPPY SPRING!
PRINCIPAL’S CORNER
I want to thank all our families for your support and prayers as this has been an extremely difficult time as we deal with the tragic loss of our Assistant Principal, Ms. Mitchell, on April 14th. Ms. Mitchell was such a huge part of Brookwood Jr. High School, and we are ALL feeling this tremendous loss.
As we begin the last full month of school, we will stay positive and get through it together. If your child(ren) are experiencing grief or loss, please reach out to one of our Social Workers, Ms. Adams (ladams1@brookwood167.org) or Ms. Page (epage@ brookwood167.org). I am also including a list of coping resources sent home with students during the week of April 17th.
Warm weather is finally here, and the month of May promises to be both a busy and exciting time with the end-of-theyear achievements of our students and the celebration of our graduating 8th graders.
Jill Larson Principal jlarson@brookwood167.org

• Abdominal pain from unknown cause
• New congestion/runny nose

ATTENDANCE
Take a look at your child’s attendance. When your child returns in January, the school year will be about half over. This is a great time to review the first part of the year and make plans for the next. Looking at your child’s school attendance should be part of this important process. Did your child attend school every day unless they were sick or there was a family emergency?
If so, congratulations! Let them know you’re proud of their strong attendance. Help them keep up the good work for the rest of the year and beyond. Strong attendance is one predictor of success in school.
If not:
• Remind your child that regular school attendance is a priority.
• Emphasize the need for rest, nutrition, and exercise to stay healthy and stay in school.
• Consider the reasons you take your child out of school. Can you make some appointments outside school hours?
• Create consequences. Let your child know that skipping school erodes your trust in them.
IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE INFORMATION
To report absences please call the attendance line at (708) 757-2115. Please call the school before 8:30 a.m. to report your child’s absence.
Please leave the following information:
• Student’s full name with the spelling of the last name
• Reason for absence/tardy/early release
• Your name and relationship to the student
• Please call the main number (708) 758-5252 at least 45 minutes PRIOR to early dismissal.
For your student to be EXCUSED you must sign them in and out in the main office or their absence will be marked as unexcused.
Official attendance will be reported every morning at 9:00 a.m. If your child joins a teacher’s classroom late, they will be marked tardy in PowerSchool, and you will be notified through the Principal’s Class dojo.

Parent Involvement
Our focus this year continues to be on parent involvement. We want to create a welcoming environment for all our parents, and we want to continue this important partnership throughout the school year.
Our next Parent/Teacher Conferences are on MAY 8th, 2023. Attending Parent/Teacher Conferences is one way to be involved and help your child succeed.
A PArent/teAcher conference Is A greAt oPPortunIty to:
• Discuss your child’s progress
• Share your child’s strengths and needs
• Work with the teacher to help your child do well in school
Conferences focus on learning, although behavior and social concerns might be discussed. The teacher will review your child’s progress, including strengths and areas in need of improvement.
If you are unable to make it to Parent/Teacher Conferences, please contact the school to setup a meeting with your child’s teachers.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION & SUPPORTS (PBIS)
SECOND STEP
(SEL) As part of our PBIS Initiative at Brookwood Jr. High School, our teachers have been infusing a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum into their daily routines. With a lesson focused on each week, this curriculum teaches our students essential skills such as empathy, emotion management, problem-solving, friendship, and responsibility. The weekly focus for each lesson varies. Please talk with your child about these lessons; it will help reinforce them at home! If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact your child’s SEL teacher.
defIne, teAch, And routInely Acknowledge fAmIly exPectAtIons.
• Discuss how you want to live as a family and identify some “pillars” (important, building-block concepts) that represent what you value. Talk about what those pillars look and sound like in everyday routines. To help the family remember and be consistent, choose only 3-5 and create positive statements about them.
here Are A few exAmPles:
• Speak in a respectful voice.
• Be responsible for actions.
• Be safe; keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
• Identify a couple of “HOT SPOTS” to begin. Challenging behaviors often occur within routines. Perhaps mornings or mealtimes create hot spots for the family. After discussing 1-2 ways to be respectful, responsible, and safe in the morning, teach what each looks like. Have fun with it! Set up “expectation stations” for practicing the plan and assign each family member one pillar to teach to the rest.
13 /Brookwood Junior High School Newsletter / Issue 05 / May 2023
• Behaviors that get attention get repeated. Notice when a child does the right thing and says something about each success: “I noticed you stopped to pick up your shoes in the hallway. Thanks for putting them away and keeping the walkway safe for others.” The easiest way to change a behavior is to point out what a person does right!
• Remember this catchy phrase, “5-and-1 gets it done,” to ensure five positive interactions for each negative interaction. When the expected behavior becomes routine, the reinforcement can fade away.
creAte engAgIng And PredIctAble routInes.
• Children crave structure and routine. Adults may look forward to a relaxing evening or weekend, but kids often need regular activity and engagement. Consider that either the kids are busy or the adults are busy managing bored kids!
• Use visuals to create predictability. A visual schedule can display the day’s significant routines with pictures drawn, real photos, or magazine cut-outs. Create the schedule together, if possible. Parents can ask a child to check the schedule – especially when moving from a preferred to non-preferred activity. It’s hard to argue with a picture!
