Provide teachers and staff with opportunities to learn from other staff members Attendance/Absences/Tardies To ensure that our students excel academically, they must attend school daily and be on time.

When students are tardy, they miss valuable

instruction, primarily in reading and language arts. Attendance will be tied into our school’s PBIS expectations in which students will be able to earn rewards and participate in fun activities.

When your child has to be absent, please inform the front office. Our absentee number is 708-757-2110.

We are excited to announce that Brookwood School District 167 will provide students with a set of school supplies for school and home again this school year! Therefore, there are [NO] school supplies lists. However, if your child needs additional resources, please get in touch with the school office at 708-758-5252.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

POWERSCHOOL All Brookwood teachers use an online grading system called “PowerSchool” that they update every Thursday.

We encourage you to check your child’s progress regularly.

This program is confidential therefore, you will need an access username and password to see your child’s progress. If you need your username and password, please contact the school office at 708 758-5 50. A PowerSchool app for your cellular phone makes it easy for parents to stay updated on their child’s progress.

MATH

As we wrap up GCF and LCM using Prime Factorization, we will move into fractions: multiplying, dividing, oh my!! This should take us through the majority of October.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We wrapped up a fantastic Hispanic Heritage Project, and the students did Muy Bien!

We are now returning our focus to nishing up our Geography Unit, and we will soon be moving into our textbook, starting our travels to the Fertile Crescent. We will also be spending some time learning about Veterans’ Day and how important it is to recognize our very own American Heroes!

MATH INTERVENTION We have made great strides in our Do the Math Intervention classes! We are being able to show how to add and subtract with Open Number Lines, which help us organize our concepts of adding one & two digit numbers correctly using an imaginary number line.

READING INTERVENTION In Read 180, we have started Workshop 4: True West. We have read some stories of people traveling west in the 1800s and the advantages and disadvantages of those on the journey. We are synthesizing text evidence between multiple texts. Software usage and independent reading time are well underway.

SCIENCE

5th- Grade Science: StudentscompletedtheirstudyoftheScienticMethod/Engineering Design with a culminating Catapult Lab Project. Groups competed to see who could design a catapult to launch a marshmallow the farthest without exceeding 300 cm.

Congrats to the winning teams! Currently, we are studying a Matter Unit, where we

rst learned about Particles of Matter and have moved on to the Properties of Matte Soon, students will be completing a Properties of Matter Lab where they will test six

different materials for the following properties: magnetism, reectivity, and ele conductivity. Please ask your child how they tested for each of these properties!

We will then move into a Matter Unit where we will be studying particles, properties, states, changes, and conservation of matter.

6th- Grade Science: We are nishing up our learning about plant and animal cells.

Students created Cell Board Games as a major project to review the functions and parts of the cell. Many creative games were made! Our next unit will focus on Body Systems.

5TH GRADE ELA 5th Grade ELA: During the month of October, we are focusing on developing paragraphs, improving vocabulary, and making inferences. Based on pre-assessment data from September, more emphasis will be placed on analyzing and annotating texts using our Wonders curriculum and grade-level complex passages. Be on the lookout for student choice board projects using their independent reading book. Students are encouraged to read and write daily (read for at least 30 minutes and write for at least 15 minutes) to strengthen these fundamental skills.

In art, we have started working on One-Point Perspective drawings of houses! Students may choose to create a Haunted House or a “Cute” Halloween house in celebration of the upcoming holiday, or students can make a typical house with landscaping and other details found on a home. Students will use rulers to point lines toward a vanishing point

BROOKWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL VISITORS If you need to come into the school for any reason, for safety reasons, you will be required to wear a mask, and you will need to have a current Driver’s License that will be checked in our Raptor Security System.

Raptor® provides a line of sight as to who is always in our school. The system provides

all visitors, volunteers, and contractors that have signed in/out

buildings.

This is important for safety reasons.
