Learning Spanish Fundamentals... Hispanic Heritage Month started September 15th! Throughout the month, the children will be learning about hispanic individuals who have contributed to our society. Hall of Fame baseball player Pedro Martinez and singer Richie Valens are just a few of the people kids will be learning about! Buenos Días! Learning a new language almost always starts with a warm smile and a “Hi, How are you?”. The kids are excited about learning their new Spanish greetings, and are eager to use them. Ask your child to teach you a greeting, and practice at home! How do you spell Mr. Cantorna in Spanish? We’ve been furthering our fundamentals, and studying the alphabet in Spanish. Ask your child how he/she spells their name in Spanish. You’ll be proud of their progress!
ART... Students completed designs that used symmetry.
5th grade created
designs using radial symmetry while 6th grade created tessellations that use symmetry and geometry. All grade levels will begin work on projects that use perspective so that they can add depth and realism to their artwork. Art Club began meeting and students will begin creating mini comic books this month.
MUSIC... In the general music classes for both 5th and 6th grade, the students are continuing to review basic music notation, such as staffs, note names, and clefs. Students will complete a “Celebration of Knowledge to show off what they know!
We will be adding rhythm basics into the mix to get
students
thinking
about what rhythms
are
commonly heard in music they listen to. Students will have a chance to collaborate with each other, create their own rhythms, and share what they created.
We will continue to learn notes on the recorder, and by the end of October, be able to play a song chosen by the entire class!
PHYSICAL EDUCATION...
- Nelson Mandela We will be continuing our training in the area of health-related physical fitness. Students will be performing exercises in the field of cardio respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility. We will continue to explore technology resources for exercise such as the [SWORKIT] app from the app store or google play store. There is also a website that has hundreds of different workouts for students and families to try at home, you can find it at www.darebee.com. Once we finish our fitness testing, students will be asked to evaluate the strengths and the weaknesses of their personal fitness profile and we will be making a plan to improve upon their individual fitness levels.
