DECEMBER 2020

#BrookwoodStrong Dear Parents/Guardians, I would like to share a few priceless gifts, that I am so grateful for at Hickory Bend School. The gift of a wonderful and amazing school where students are learning remotely during an extremely difficult time. The gift of a wonderful and amazing staff & teachers who give many, many countless hours of their day to provide students with a quality instructional experience that will guide towards success. The gift of extremely supportive parents who care and support the efforts of Hickory Bend. The gift of a heartfelt community who has partnered with us. And also the gift of two dynamic office staff who share in leading our school on a path to academic success. As parent, you have an enormous influence on your child’s success. Keep your child’s mind active during the Holiday Break. Reading is the single most important skill your child will use in their lifetime. Selecting appropriate books now can bring and maintain an interest in reading for years to come.

As parent, you have an enormous influence on your child’s success. Keep your child’s mind active during the Holiday Break. Reading is the single most important skill your child will use in their lifetime. Selecting appropriate books now can bring and maintain an interest in reading for years to come. Selecting books for your child can be challenging and worthwhile task. Time and care must be taken when looking for that “RIGHT” book. The right book involves the child in positive experiences-suspense, humor, empathy, information, excitement, adventure and enjoyment.

Here are a few guidelines to follow: • The book should be honest • A fiction book should be believable • A nonfiction book should be accurate and free of complexities and technicalities. If the reader doesn’t understand the book, why read it? • If the book is just for fun, it should be lively, colorful, and humorous • Books for the very young should have numerous exciting pictures

Here are a few suggestions of book titles that might be of interest to your child: • Early School Age Children: Dr. Seuss, Where the Wild Things Are, The Snowy Day, Harriet the Spy, and Morris the Cat • Older Children: The Hobbit, A Wrinkle in Time, The Cat Ate My Gym Suit, Encyclopedia Brown, and Kate Along We miss all of our “All Star Students” and families greatly and look forward to reopening Hickory Bend as soon as we are able.

PLEASE TAKE CARE, BE SAFE AND STAY HEALTHY! f
