POWERSCHOOL At PowerSchool, we believe that for students to succeed, they need to feel connected to learning in a personal way.
All Hickory Bend teachers use an online grading system called PowerSchool that they update every Thursday. We encourage you to check your child’s progress regularly. This program is entirely confidential; therefore, you will need an access username and password to see your child’s progress. If you need your username and/or password, please get in touch with the school office at (708) 758-4520. A PowerSchool app for your cellular phone makes it easy for parents to stay updated on their child’s progress.

After School Matters!
Our afterschool activities are the place to be! Violin, Sensational Singers Choir, book clubs, Number Wizards, Drama Club, and the Lego Club are fun ways for our students to remain engaged at Hickory Bend. After-school activities play a vital role in a child’s overall development, offering a well-rounded education beyond the traditional classroom setting. They provide a safe, supportive environment for personal growth, skill development, and pursuing passions, making them an integral part of a student’s educational journey. Club opportunities change throughout the year. If your child is not currently involved, please stay tuned for coming opportunities.
VISITORS If you need to come into the school for any safety reasons, you must have a current Driver’s License that will be checked in our Raptor Security System. Raptor® provides a line of sight for those always in our school. The system provides school and district-wide reporting for all visitors, volunteers, and contractors signed in/out of our buildings. This is important for safety reasons.

AHHH-CHOOO!!!! DON’T Spread The Flu! As we transition into the colder months, we must remember the flu season. The flu can have a significant impact on our students, staff, and families, so we want to provide you with some vital information to help keep our school community healthy during this time.
Understanding the Flu The flu, or influenza, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause a wide range of symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue. In severe cases, the flu can lead to hospitalization and even be life-threatening.
Flu Prevention Tips Preventing the flu is crucial, and there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of infection... •
Get Vaccinated: Annual flu vaccination is the most effective way to protect yourself and those around you. We encourage all eligible members of our school community to get vaccinated.
•
Practice Good Hygiene: Teach your children to cover their mouths and noses with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing. Encourage frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least twenty (20) seconds.
•
Stay Home When Sick: If you or your child is experiencing flu-like symptoms, please stay home to prevent the spread of the virus. Please consult a healthcare professional for guidance on when it’s safe to return to school.
•
Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: A balanced diet, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep can boost your immune system and help protect against the flu.
Hickory Bend Elementary School | December Newsletter
Please know that safety is our number one priority. When an ill child enters our environment, it puts us all at risk. As much as we hate to inconvenience our families, we have no choice but to send your child home when they display flu-like symptoms, including fever, excessive coughing, and regurgitation. Furthermore, we ask that your child is symptom-free for at least twenty-four (24) hours (without medication) before returning to school. If we all work together, we can minimize the spread of the cold and flu. I appreciate your cooperation!

BEDTIME STORIES!
Thank you for joining us to enjoy some Bedtime Stories and Fun. Just in case you missed it, Establishing and maintaining a bedtime routine for kids is crucial for their overall well-being and development.
KEY REASONS WHY BEDTIME ROUTINES ARE IMPORTANT... •
Promotes Healthy Sleep Patterns: Bedtime routines help regulate a child’s circadian rhythm, signaling to their body that it’s time to wind down and prepare for sleep. Consistent sleep patterns contribute to better overall sleep quality.
•
Enhances Cognitive Development: Quality sleep is vital for cognitive functions such as attention, memory, and problem-solving skills. A well-rested child is more likely to be alert and engaged in learning and daily activities.
•
Supports Emotional Regulation:
Predictable bedtime routines provide a sense of
security and stability for children. This predictability can help reduce anxiety and promote emotional well-being, making it easier for children to manage stress and regulate emotions. •
Encourages Independence:
Following a routine empowers children to take charge of
their bedtime rituals. Simple tasks like choosing pajamas or selecting a bedtime story can foster a sense of independence and responsibility. •
Strengthens Parent Child Bond:
Bedtime routines offer a quiet, focused time for
parents to connect with their children. Whether reading a story, discussing the day, or engaging in calming activities, these moments strengthen the parent/child bond.
Hickory Bend Elementary School | December Newsletter
In Summary... Bedtime routines for kids are not just about getting them to bed; they are crucial in promoting physical health, emotional well-being, and positive behavior. A structured and consistent bedtime routine contributes to a happy, healthy, and well-rested child.
•
Establishes Healthy Habits: Teaching children the importance of a consistent bedtime routine sets the foundation for lifelong healthy sleep habits. These habits can contribute to better physical and mental health as they grow.
•
Improves Behavior & Attention: Children who get enough sleep are more likely to exhibit positive behavior and have better attention spans. A well-rested child is better equipped to handle challenges and regulate their behavior effectively.
•
Physical Well Being: A regular sleep routine supports the physical growth and development of children. Growth hormones are primarily released during deep sleep, and a lack of quality sleep may impact a child’s overall health and immune system.
•
Prevents Sleep Disruptions: Consistency is vital in preventing sleep disruptions. A wellestablished bedtime routine helps minimize bedtime battles and reduces the likelihood of sleep-related issues, such as night waking or difficulty falling asleep.
•
Creates A Relaxing Environment: Bedtime routines often involve calming activities like reading, gentle music, or dimming lights. This signals to the child that it’s time to wind down, creating a relaxing environment conducive to sleep.
