A Note From The Principal Dear Parents/Guardians, It is really hard to believe the school year is winding down and school is almost over. Our last day of school is May 27th. May will be a very busy month due to the numerous activities at the end of the school year; we have our annual ACES walk, Talent Show, Field Day, Moving On Ceremony, etc. Please make sure you keep the attached calendar to refer to the events throughout this last month of school. Spring is finally here; a time for growing. Your children are doing just that, growing at Hickory Bend. Please take a moment, sit back and admire your children for the work they have done and for who they are. As parents you give your children roots from which they can grow. Grow in knowledge, grow in friendship, grow in understanding and citizenship. It is an interesting thought that one day soon they will soar on their own; firmly “rooted” in the ideals you have given them as parents. I’d like to thank you for allowing us the privilege of working with your children. Our volunteers are very special to us; our school would not be successful without all of you. Parents volunteered with our book fairs, field trips and field day. And a special thank you to our men who participated once again in our “Real Men Read Program.” Summer break represents both an ending and a new beginning. And finally, while summer represents rest and relaxation for our students, reading remains the foundation for success in school and in life. Pick up a book this summer and read! Reading continues to be one of the most inexpensive and available forms of education and entertainment. Encourage your child to spend some time reading every day. Providing an array of books, magazines and newspapers provides your child with the means to become a better reader, and will also keep them informed on world events. Reading will open up the world to your child from the comforts of home.

ENJOY YOUR SUMMER BREAK! BE SAFE!!
Congratulations to fourth grader Kaleb Bray who won the grand prize in the Preferred Meals Art Contest! This was a fourth through sixth grade drawing contest with the theme of a healthy breakfast. Kaleb was honored on Friday, April 22 with an art kit, certificate and a banner that will hang in the Hickory Bend hallway. We are very proud of Kaleb. This is the fourth year our district has won this nation-wide contest. The other entries, Addison Candiano, Adonis Cambric, Casara Crosswell, Keta Collins, and Mary Imarenezor, were also presented with certificates. Congratulations to all of our Hickory Bend participants!

On Monday, May 2nd the volunteers for Real Men Read joined the male students in a ice cream social wrap up. They each were able to create a Sundae and enjoy with there groups. Each volunteer was presented with a certificate, a photo of their group and a gift certificate for their loyalty and commitment. Thanks!

“DISTRICT FINE ARTS NIGHT” Hickory Bend’s “Sensational Singers” gave another awesome performance at the Brookwood School District Fine Arts Night on Thursday, April 28th! Thanks to all that came out to support our students. The experience for the choir members to perform at the Jr. High with the other performing groups in the district was wonderful. A fun time was had by all!.
Save the Date
“Field Day” Hickory Bend students, teachers and parents will participate in the annual ACES walk on Wednesday, May 4th. Project ACES is a worldwide event where millions of people exercise in unison to promote health, fitness, nutrition and unity. Thanks parents and volunteers for your continued support and assistance!!!
Field day is a picnic and sports activities for the whole school. It will be held on May 19th. Volunteers are welcome.

4th grade field trip to Philharmonic orchestra The Hickory Bend 4th grade classes will be attending a field trip to hear the Illiniois Philharmonic Orchestra in Frankfort on Friday, May 5th. This past Monday, guest speakers from the Illinois Philharmonic come to speak to the 4th graders about the concert they will be attending. Following the performance, the 4th graders will celebrate their last field trip at Hickory Bend by going out for pizza! Mrs. Westerfield, Music Teacher
