ISSUE: 007 / MARCH YEAR: 2022

LONGWOOD SCHOOL We appreciate your investment in your child’s education and want to share with you some information about State and Federally required assessments. Just a reminder that this month students will be taking the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) State Assessment Exam. Our students take Federally required assessments every Spring. These assessments help us understand how our students are growing academically, compared to their peers across the State. The State uses this information to provide more support and resources to the schools in the greatest need. Federal law requires the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to administer certain assessments to all students who attend public schools in the State, including students who attend charter schools. We THANK YOU for your dedication and partnership in your child’s education!

STEAM ARCADE Mobile Ed’s STEAM Arcade is coming to Longwood Elementary School on March 22, 2022! The games of STEAM Arcade have been designed to build skills such as pattern recognition, motor control, eye-hand coordination and teamwork through gameplay. Students will be invited to not only play, but to examine all of the elements at work – the lights, the sounds, the logos, the color schemes, and even the programmed movements all convey a message. All of those elements go into game design, and all of those elements are what make up STEAM.

Parents did you know that if your child is absent, you can request a recorded version of their teacher’s lesson? We want to keep students on track, and this is a great way for ensuring students don’t fall behind if they miss a class. You can also request a recorded lesson if your child is struggling and they need to see the lesson again. Please reach out to your child’s teachers and take advantage of this great resource.

5ESSENTIALS SURVEY WHAT IS THE 5ESSENTIALS SURVEY? The 5Essentials Survey identifies five indicators that lead to improved outcomes for all students, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. The five (5) indicators that positively affect school success are: 1. Effective Leaders 2. Collaborative Teachers 3. Involved Families 4. Supportive Environments 5. Ambitious Instruction Research derived from the Five Essentials for School Success has proven that schools strong on at least three of the 5Essentials are ten (10) times more likely to improve student outcomes. Schools across Illinois participated in the Ninth annual 5Essentials Survey of Learning Conditions: Organizing Schools for Improvement this past academic year. This survey generates valuable data that districts can use to guide their ongoing efforts to improve schools and to offer students an excellent education. The survey is another improvement tool that allows districts and the state to share data as a means to inform parents and community members about the school’s learning environment. The Illinois 5Essentials Survey is administered online by Chicago Impact at the University of Chicago on behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education. Data and indicators are a result from an anonymous administration of the survey instrument.

Attention Parents: It’s not too late to take the 5Essentials Survey! Open From January 11th - March 11th, 2022 Use this lnk | http://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois

ILLINOIS ASSESSMENT OF READINESS (IAR) ACCORDING TO FEDERAL LAW Students must take an achievement exam in reading/language arts and mathematics each year from third through eighth grade. In Illinois, students take the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR). Assessments play a role in helping ISBE and school districts identify areas where schools need targeted support. School districts must administer assessments to at least 95 percent of students. Teachers have been working hard to get students ready for this important exam. Some things parents can do to help their child prepare are: • Encourage your child to use Dreambox at home to reinforce and build math skills • Read with your child regularly • Encourage your child to read independently everyday for one (1) hour • Stay on top of homework • Talk with your child’s teacher • Use relaxation techniques • Talk about what the test is like • Go over accommodations • Be calm and upbeat and show your child your confidence in his/her abilities If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the ISBE Assessment Department: www.isbe.net/Pages/Assessment.aspx

WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME If My Child is Sick, When Should I Keep Them Home? If a child has any symptom listed below, they should stay home in the morning or go home if these symptoms first occur at school. When a child can return to school is based on the specific symptom they have and whether it’s considered a COVID-19 symptom: • Fever of 100.4 or higher • New onset of moderate to severe headache • Shortness of breath, new cough, sore throat • Nausea Vomiting, Diarrhea • Abdominal pain from unknown cause • New congestion/runny nose • New loss of sense of taste or smell • Fatigue from unknown cause • Muscle or body aches If your child has been in close contact with someone with a known or suspected case of COVID-19 within the last fourteen (14) days. (Close contact is defined as someone who was within six (6) feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of fifteen (15) minutes or more over a twenty-four (24) hour period, starting from two (2) days before illness onset.) If you answer “YES” to any of the above, your child MUST stay home! Please call the school to report your child’s absence.
