TEACHING WHAT COUNTS

Mission and Values

Diversity Statement

The Browning School fosters growth of courageous and compassionate men of intellect and integrity who aspire to contribute meaningfully to our world.

The Browning School strives to create a diverse community in which all members are safe, respected and valued. We believe that in actively promoting a diverse learning environment, we are fostering intellectual, social and emotional growth for all. Recognizing and pursuing diversity, however, are not enough; we seek to transcend mere tolerance of differences and aspire to a celebration of the varied appearances, abilities, perspectives and values that characterize our community.

The Browning gentleman develops amid a community that upholds these values:

SUPPORTING ONE ANOTHER

HONESTY We speak the truth, act with integrity and take responsibility for our actions.

DIGNITY We honor and celebrate the dignity of all people and support the power of a diverse, inclusive and welcoming community.

CURIOSITY We encourage and celebrate openminded inquiry about our world and the perspectives of those around us.

PURPOSE We believe that education encourages exploration and discovery in pursuit of meaning and enduring fulfillment.

s a community we have experienced so much this past year that has both challenged and changed us. We faced sadness in the passing of friends and family; we endured months of quarantine away from loved ones; we repeatedly witnessed deep social injustice faced by Black citizens and finally began to understand and undertake the hard work necessary to hold our shared nation accountable. Much remains uncertain, yet I am hopeful and encouraged by how the Browning community came together to support one another emotionally throughout this turbulent period, and also to support our school philanthropically through the Annual Fund. This year’s giving broke all previous records, even as our community contributed to a myriad of equally important emergency funds. Thank you. During the spring of 2020, I was both amazed and energized by our faculty who quickly adapted to a new way of teaching with grace, patience, and perseverance. They spent countless hours learning and improving the way they reached our boys REPORT OF GIVING 2019–2020

through BrowningConnect. Most importantly, they worked tirelessly in an effort to ensure that each boy felt heard, challenged, and known despite the physical distancing. More than anything, my spirits were continually bolstered by our boys, who showed true courage, grytte, and resourcefulness—on behalf of themselves and others—as well as the strength and compassion to speak up for what is right and just. Despite being displaced from our schoolhouse much of the second semester, our boys did not dwell on the missed opportunities and events, but instead moved forward with determination. Our seniors, specifically, despite having forfeited many of the culminating experiences of their Browning careers, were galvanized by current events and achieved 93% participation in their Class of 2020 gift to Browning. Rather than rest on their significant laurels, they moved forward to help strengthen our community. I am certain, now more than ever, that these boys will help right the wrongs, aid those who are in need, and become the strong leaders our world needs. A Browning education involves so much more than what can be taught in a library, classroom, art or music studio, science lab, or from a textbook. This is because we rightly encourage our students to be

open-minded, and to ask hard questions of themselves and others. They are challenged to uncover their own answers and formulate ideas based on what they have learned and from their own assessments. They are given a safe space to be introspective—to look at who they are, their beliefs, and what they want from their educations and their lives. They are guided to conduct themselves with honesty, dignity, and respect in all that they do and will do. I have witnessed all of these qualities in our students during my tenure at Browning, but the last six months have crystalized my view, and I hope yours as well, of the comprehensive nature of a Browning education. I believe our boys possess the knowledge, confidence, and perspective to not only excel academically, but also to look at others with understanding and compassion and lead lives that will make us all proud. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and our faculty, I thank you again for your tremendous and ongoing support of our School.

his year, more than any other, I have felt the unwavering strength of the Browning community. Over the past year, but especially seven months, we have worked together to support one another and our beloved school in ways I could not have imagined last year at this time. Despite our physical distance, we stood together. On behalf of Browning’s Board of Trustees, I want to thank our many donors—alumni, current and past parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends— who contributed generously to the 2019–2020 Annual Fund, allowing us to break so many previous records in an unprecedented year. Your philanthropic support will enable Browning to continue to give our boys the unparalleled education they deserve. Thank you again for your steadfast commitment to The Browning School and to all of our students.
