LETTERS/NUMBERS

Friends —Those of you who have been members of the Browning community for as long as my family has know it was a long time coming and a few false starts before we triumphed over tough New York City odds to find a building and location large enough and in close enough proximity to our existing schoolhouse to create a suitable Upper School for our boys.

Well, we have finally secured a wonderful facility at 337 East 64th Street which gives us the “room to grow”—the theme of this Annual Report of Giving—to secure our mission of educating men of honesty, dignity, curiosity, and purpose in our ever more complicated world. (As the song goes, “if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.”)

I would be remiss in not giving a shout out to three members of the Board of Trustees without whose extraordinary dedication and skills we would not have been able to secure our new home: Thank you, Phil Hofmann P’20, ’24, Jerry Pi ’95, P’32, and Andrew Vogel P’28.

Head of School John Botti’s letter that follows outlines much of what an expanded Upper School will do to enhance the academic and co-curricular experience for our boys in all three divisions, including the Lower and Middle Schools.

Moving the oldest boys to a new facility will not only give them “room of their own,” but also free up space on East 62nd Street for the younger boys, who will, in addition, benefit from a myriad of new multi-purpose spaces only a five to ten minute walk away (depending on how long your legs are).

And now I must thank all of you for your generosity. Without it we could not be able to offer our students and faculty the resources and tools needed to inspire intellectual and personal growth.

As we move this autumn into the public phases of Building Our Future: A Comprehensive Campaign to Advance Browning’s Mission we will be calling on everyone for support: for new and renovated facilities, expanded approaches to pedagogy and wellness, financial aid to increase access to a Browning education for the most deserving students, as well as continued unrestricted support through the Annual Fund. Please be as generous as you can. Our future depends on it.

Members of the Browning Community —After being constricted in so many ways over the last two and a half pandemic-ridden years, I am beyond thrilled to enhance the delivery of our mission by reimagining the historic building at 337 East 64th Street as Browning’s state-of-the art Upper School.

The new classrooms will contain the most innovative technology; the new STEAM labs, the most novel equipment. Expanded community spaces will allow, for the first time, assemblies of the entire student body and faculty on our own campus, more professional dramatic presentations, as well as a plethora of comfortable and informal gathering spots, including some that are outdoors. A regulation-sized gymnasium with ample spectator seating will put Browning on equal footing with our peer schools. All of this means expanded course offerings, interpersonal connections, and opportunities to explore—i.e., “room to grow.”

Browning is committed to remaining a warm and friendly place where each and every student is known and loved as an individual. At the same time, the new building will give us the opportunity to increase enrollment from 400 to 500 students

(still an intimate size for a K–12 school). The expansion will start in the middle grades, where enrollment demand has long been robust, and then move into the upper grades. This will allow us to boost the number of electives and co-curricular opportunities we can offer, as well as amplify possibilities for new and more diverse friendships as our class size increases from 30–45 boys in grades six through 12.

Now that demolition is underway on East 64th Street, I am eager to start rebuilding and augmenting offerings for our students. I am also excited that it will allow us to send more Browning boys out into the world as courageous and compassionate examples of “Today’s Boys, Tomorrow’s Men.”

Your support is a vote of confidence as Browning enters our 135th year of providing boys with a meaningful education suited to their great expectations and unlimited aspirations.

Thank you.

Minds to Expand →

Our proposed expansion at East 64th Street will give Browning the space to increase enrollment by 20%, while augmenting programming in all three divisions.

The transformative expansion of the School’s physical campus and programming is critical to attracting a broader applicant pool. This campaign enables us to offer more boys the experience and benefit of a Browning education, one based on honesty, curiosity, dignity and purpose.

Potential to Discover

A top-to-bottom renovation of a building at 337 East 64th Street will add approximately 48,000 square feet to Browning’s facilities, affording faculty and students in both schoolhouses more opportunities for collaboration and inspiration.

We are able to advance Browning’s long legacy of academic excellence by offering our teachers and boys the necessary resources, tools, and space to pursue innovative discovery, individually and with faculty and classmates.

Talent to Cultivate

An expanded home incorporating outdoor space as well as cutting-edge technology will provide significant opportunities to enhance the curriculum, stimulating the intellectual aspirations of our boys and the pedagogical skills of our faculty.

Enabling Browning boys to fully-realize their academic and extra-curricular potential, while embracing a healthy, empathic definition of masculinity, is key to our mission.
