Commencement Greetings from the Dean To the Class of 2012: Today marks a major milestone in your life and your career. The administration, faculty and staff of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine could not be more proud of you. As students of the college, you have distinguished yourselves with hard work and professionalism. You have our heartfelt congratulations for a job well done. Your journey is just beginning, however. As the renowned physician Sir William Osler noted in 1900: “ The training of the medical school gives direction, points the way and furnishes a chart, fairly incomplete, for the voyage, but nothing more.� You are confronting a volume of medical information never before encountered by physicians. New information will be learned and old information discarded at a remarkable pace. OU-HCOM has equipped you not only with facts, but also with the tools necessary to seek new knowledge. I encourage you to follow medical literature closely, evaluate it critically and keep your minds open to new forms of therapy. Your patients will assume that you are providing the very latest in medical care. In meeting their expectations, you will be honoring yourself, your college and your profession. As you take your oath, you will make a pledge to the students who follow you. Your college selected you not only because you will be an outstanding physician and surgeon, but also because of your potential to teach the generations of osteopathic physicians to come. The future of the profession rests in your hands. I hope you will integrate learning, doing and teaching into every day of your career. On a personal note, I have sincerely enjoyed working with each of you. I also am honored that I was able to spend my final year as dean with you. I well remember my own graduation and know what a momentous occasion this is for you and your family. You have worked extremely hard to get to this day, and you deserve the honors bestowed upon you. Welcome Ohio University and its Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine welcome those attending these commencement exercises.
Profile of the University Ohio University’s origins can be traced to an ordinance of Congress on July 13, 1787, “for the government of the territory of the United States northwest of the river Ohio.” The ordinance proclaimed “Religion, morality, and knowledge, being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.” This principle was applied to the Ohio Company’s land purchase agreement, which provided for lands to be set aside for a university. Chartered first by the Ohio Company in 1799, and then by the State of Ohio on February 18, 1804, Ohio University became Ohio’s first university and the first in the Old Northwest Territory. From a modest beginning early in the 19th century, the university has steadily grown in numbers and programs. Today the Athens campus enrolls over 20,000 students with another 9,500 on five regional campuses or in other off-campus programs. Students come from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Ohio University is a state-assisted institution. Less than half of its instructional and general budget comes from state funds. State subsidy and student fees are supplemented by income from private support and endowments.
Profile of the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine Established by act of the Ohio General Assembly in 1975, the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine was created to help alleviate the state’s growing shortage of family physicians and to train doctors for chronically underserved areas. The educational program has been tailored to meet this legislative mandate. Although Ohio University’s medical school did not actually hold classes until the fall of 1976, its history is also a little older than one might think. In 1823, the University Board of Trustees appointed a committee “to take into consideration the expediency of establishing a Medical School ... ” and recommended that since, at the time, there was no medical school in Ohio, one might appropriately be located in Athens. Accordingly, the trustees set aside a large tract of land west of the College Green for a medical college. The site is, today, commemorated by a plaque about 250 yards from Grosvenor Hall, the first medical building. It only required a delay of 153 years for Ohio University’s medical school — through action of the General Assembly, the governor and the Ohio osteopathic profession — to finally open its doors. An orientation toward primary care, a commitment to supply medical care where such services are not otherwise available, its pioneering continuum approach to medical education and a fruitful research program are key components of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. An emphasis on these factors has enabled the college to become recognized as one of the nation’s trendsetting medical education institutions.

Academic Heraldry The caps, gowns and hoods worn today in these Commencement Exercises are patterned after the attire of monks and students in the Middle Ages. Those possessing the doctoral degree wear gowns with broad velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the full, round, open sleeves. This velvet trimming is usually black, but can be hunter green, which is distinctive to the field of osteopathic medicine. Most of the color and meaning of the costume is found in the hood. These are silk-lined with the colors of the institution conferring the degree. As can readily be observed, the official colors of Ohio University are green and white. The border of the hood is velvet, and its color signifies the field of learning to which the degree pertains.
Ceremonial Mace For centuries the mace has been used as a symbol of authority. Its origins date back to the fasces — a bundle of rods borne before ancient Roman magistrates. Early maces were actually weapons of war, similar to a club, and were often used by ecclesiastics who were forbidden to use other kinds of weapons. In the early days of Cambridge and Oxford, religious and/or educational officials used maces to shepherd unruly students. Today, the use of the mace is a representation of authority for royalty, legislatures and universities around the world. The late David R. Klahn, professor of art, designed the Ohio University Ceremonial Mace. It is modeled after one of the balustrades of an original stairway of Cutler Hall, the university’s main administration building. Cast in bronze, the mace features the university seal and a stylized representation of the Cutler Hall cupola. This is the second mace created for use at official university ceremonies and made its debut at the President’s Convocation for First-Year Students in 1999.
The Seal of Office Worn by the president at official Ohio University functions, the Seal of Office also was designed by Professor Klahn. Fabricated of silver and bronze, the primary medallion features a silhouette of Cutler Hall, the date of Ohio University’s founding (1804), and the words, “OHIO’S FIRST UNIVERSITY.” The secondary medallion at the back of the chain is the University Seal. Smaller medallions, replicas of the two center portions of the University Seal, are interspersed alternately with the chain’s links. The Seal of Office was created for the inauguration of President Robert Glidden in 1994 and has been passed on to the current president of Ohio University.

Commencement Speaker’s Biography David S. Drozek, D.O. This year’s keynote speaker, David S. Drozek, D.O., is an assistant professor of surgery at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) and serves on the college’s advisory committee for the Heritage Community Clinic. He is in private practice with University Medical Associates of Athens, and he holds medical privileges at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville and O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens. Dr. Drozek is a 1983 graduate of OU-HCOM. Prior to joining OU-HCOM as a faculty member in 2006, Dr. Drozek, his wife, Becky, and their three children lived in Honduras as missionaries for eight years. Dr. Drozek served as a medical missionary with Missions Door, which was then known as Mission to the Americas. As part of his missionary work in Central America, Dr. Drozek assisted in the development and opening of Hospital Loma de Luz in Balfate, Honduras, in conjunction with the Cornerstone Foundation. While in Honduas, Dr. Drozek hosted multiple construction and medical teams, and he participated in collaborative community development activities with government and non-governmental medical facilities. Every year since joining OU-HCOM, Drozek has escorted groups of our students to various countries including Honduras, El Salvador and Ecuador where they have assisted with surgeries, held medical clinics and met with Central and South American students, interns and physicians. In the winter and spring of 2010, Dr. Drozek co-organized and led a team of faculty and staff from OU-HCOM and the Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education on a relief mission to earthquake-stricken Haiti. Dr. Drozek has provided free surgical services for OU-HCOM’s Heritage Community Clinic. He volunteers for Good Works, Inc., a homeless shelter located in Athens. He has been active in his church’s Men’s Ministry and has served as an adult and children’s Sunday school teacher. At OU-HCOM, Dr. Drozek serves as the faculty co-advisor for the student chapters of the Christian Medical Association and the Surgery and Sports Medicine Club. He served as co-advisor for Salud es Vida and the Albert Schweitzer Fellows Program in 2011. Dr. Drozek also serves as a facilitator for various research programs by OU-HCOM students, and is the co-author of various research articles. In 2009, the national Student Osteopathic Surgical Association honored Dr. Drozek as Surgery Mentor of the Year. Dr. Drozek is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery, and he is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the Ohio Osteopathic Association, the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and the Christian Medical Association. Dr. Drozek earned a bachelor’s degree from Cedarville College in Cedarville, Ohio. He completed a rotating internship and a general surgery residency, both at Doctors Hospital in Columbus, where he was chief resident in 1987–1988.

Osteopathic Physician’s Oath I do hereby affirm my loyalty to the profession I am about to enter. I will be mindful always of my great responsibility to preserve the health and the life of my patients, to retain their confidence and respect both as a physician and a friend who will guard their secrets with scrupulous honor and fidelity, to perform faithfully my professional duties, to employ only those recognized methods of treatment consistent with good judgment and with my skill and ability, keeping in mind always nature’s laws and the body’s inherent capacity for recovery. I will be ever vigilant in aiding in the general welfare of the community, sustaining its laws and institutions, not engaging in those practices which will in any way bring shame or discredit upon myself or my profession. I will give no drugs for deadly purposes to any person, though it be asked of me. I will endeavor to work in accord with my colleagues in a spirit of progressive cooperation and never by word or by act cast imputations upon them or on their rightful practices. I will look with respect and esteem upon all those who have taught me my art. To my college I will be loyal and strive always for its best interests and for the interests of the students who will come after me. I will be ever alert to further the application of basic biologic truths to the healing arts and to develop the principles of osteopathic medicine as taught by my profession. In the presence of this gathering, I bind myself to this oath.
