Dean’s Message Congratulations on becoming a student at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. You were chosen over a large number of other outstanding candidates, and this is an accomplishment about which you should be very proud. We know that you have the potential to be an exceptional osteopathic physician and surgeon. Practicing as a physician is an honor and privilege that few achieve. Our faculty and staff members are here to make a difference in your medical education because your career goals are important to us. Our clinical faculty members, researchers, physician preceptors, and administrators are here for you as you make decisions about the kind of physician or surgeon you want to be and where you intend to practice. When you graduate, you will join a network of more than 2,783 medical school alumni, well-respected osteopathic physicians and surgeons in their fields, who also stand ready to help you fulfill your aspirations. During the next four years your days will be filled with the rigor of medical school. You will be working closely with your colleagues, your fellow classmates of the Class of 2016. Your shared experiences in the gross anatomy lab, small group sessions, lectures, the simulation labs, research labs, in the community, and on rotations at our partner hospitals may be just as important as your individual scores on assignments, labs, and exams. Many of our graduates talk about the importance of the lifelong professional and personal bonds they formed while in medical school. We are grateful that you have chosen a profession dedicated to the improvement of human lives. With this ceremony you officially become a member of the osteopathic community and a distinguished group of medical professionals committed to excellence in patient care and the well-being of our communities. There is no better place to learn the art and science of medicine than at OU-HCOM. I thank you for the privilege of assisting you as you grow into outstanding osteopathic physicians. My best wishes for your continued success.

The Phillips Medal of Public Service The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine determined in 1976 that a continuing recognition of the men and women involved in health care, education and public service was long overdue. Wallace Phillips and Jody Galbreath Phillips, longtime friends of Ohio University. Mr. Phillips was the attorney for John W. Galbreath and Co., Columbus, Ohio. During his distinguished career, he served as president of the Board of Trustees of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, member of the Board of Trustees at Franklin University and trustee of Vanderbilt University. Mrs. Phillips was a graduate of Ohio University, a member and chairman of the Ohio University Board of Trustees, a member of the college’s advisory board, and president or board member of such groups as Twig 99 of Children’s Hospital, First Community Church, Junior League, Buckeye Boys Ranch, Childhood League, Columbus Association of the Performing Arts, the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts and the Board of Trustees of Doctors Hospital North.
