Executive Dean’s Message Dear members of the Class of 2017, Congratulations on becoming a student at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. You were chosen over a large number of other outstanding candidates, and this is an accomplishment of which you should be very proud. The next four years will be rigorous and rewarding. You will work closely with your fellow classmates, and your shared experiences in the research, gross anatomy and simulation labs; in the lectures and small group sessions; and out in the community and on rotations at our partner hospitals will be just as important as your individual scores on assignments and exams. Our clinical faculty members, researchers, physician preceptors and administrators are here to support you in your education. They are here to counsel you throughout your next four years and as you make decisions about how and where you want to practice. You have chosen a profession dedicated to the improvement of human lives. This ceremony welcomes you as a member of the osteopathic community, a distinguished group of medical professionals committed to excellence in patient care and the wellbeing of our communities. There is no better place to learn the art and science of osteopathic medicine than at OU-HCOM. On behalf of our college, I offer our best wishes for your continued success.

The Phillips Medal of Public Service The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine established the Phillips Medal of Public Service in 1976. The college awards the Phillips Medal annually to recognize the men and women who make significant contributions to health care, education and public service. The Phillips Medal of Public Service is named for the late J. Wallace Phillips and Jody Galbreath Phillips, longtime friends of Ohio University. Mr. Phillips was the attorney for John W. Galbreath and Co., Columbus, Ohio. During his distinguished career, he served as president of the Board of Trustees of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, member of the Board of Trustees at Franklin University and trustee of Vanderbilt University. In addition, he was president of the Columbus Rotary Club, a 33rd degree Mason, and a member of The Jockey Club and the Columbus and Ohio Bar Associations. Mrs. Phillips was a graduate of Ohio University, a member and chairman of the Ohio University Board of Trustees, a member of the college’s advisory board, and president or board member of such groups as Twig 99 of Children’s Hospital, First Community Church, Junior League, Buckeye Boys Ranch, Childhood League, Columbus Association of the Performing Arts, the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts and the Board of Trustees of Doctors Hospital North.

2013 Phillips Medal of Public Service Award Recipient John A. Brose, D.O., FAAFP John A. “Jack” Brose, D.O., vice provost for health affairs at Ohio University, advises and supports the Provost’s Office on the development of the new central and northeast Ohio campuses and leads the university’s Academic Health Center. Dr. Brose served with the Heritage College for 30 years as a clinical faculty member, researcher and senior administrator, the last 10 years as dean. In 2009, Dr. Brose initiated a strategic planning process that culminated in 2011 with the announcement of a $105 million gift to the medical school from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundations. The gift is one of the largest private donations ever directed to higher education in Ohio. The gift is the largest in support of primary care medical education and is intended to address pressing health delivery issues across the state and nation, including the shortage of primary care physicians. The college’s campus in Dublin, in partnership with OhioHealth, is being developed in direct response to that shortage. This campus opens in 2014. In 2012, Dr. Brose led efforts to partner with the Cleveland Clinic to open a third campus in northeast Ohio in 2015. Named the college’s fifth dean in November 2001, Dr. Brose oversaw a 40 percent increase in enrollment, redevelopment of the curriculum, and renovations of many of OU-HCOM’s existing facilities and construction of new facilities, including the $34.5 million, 89,000-square-foot Osteopathic Heritage Foundations and Charles R. and Marilyn Y. Stuckey Academic & Research Center. Throughout his career at OU-HCOM, including his time as dean, Dr. Brose continued to practice medicine, in recent years volunteering in the college’s free clinic, the Heritage Community Clinic, which he established. Today the free clinic provides thousands of people with the health care they otherwise could not afford. Under Dr. Brose’s leadership, OU-HCOM completed the necessary privatization of the college’s faculty physician practice, and in 2011 took responsibility for Ohio University’s student health services, now known as Campus Care. Also, the college’s system of teaching hospitals across the state, the Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education, doubled in size from 12 to 24 hospitals and health care facilities. Recipient of 26 “outstanding instructor awards” at OU-HCOM, Dr. Brose was named “Ohio Educator of the Year” by the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians in 2001. In 2012, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Ohio Osteopathic Association. Dr. Brose was a two-term chairman of the Ohio Council of Medical School Deans. He is the author of numerous academic and research publications, including the book “Guide to EKG Interpretation.” Dr. Brose received his undergraduate degree in biology from Gettysburg College in 1972. He attended the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth - Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 1976. In 1979, he completed a residency in family practice at the Scott Medical Center USAF, where he was chief resident. Afterwards, he completed a Teaching and Research Fellowship at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
