e believe there is a real nobility to the mission of community newspapers, and we are deeply passionate about the work we do for you every week of the year. We believe in our role of informing and educating the public, in creating a forum for engagement, and serving as the institutional memory of this community. We remember the past and use it to help inform the present and prepare for the future. We are proud of our accomplishments in 2014. For the first time we were winners of several California Newspaper Publishers Association Better Newspaper Awards, we placed second in Best Front Page and Best Column and received honorable mentions for Best Artistic Photo, Best Local Reporting, and General Excellence. We also placed second for Best Opinion and Best Column in the National Newspaper Publishers Association annual awards competition. With a focus on our growth through digital platforms and social media, we have added My VOICE Rants & Raves, a weekly blog highlighting important Inland Empire events, issues and individuals, and Cityscapes, a new bimonthly digital magazine focusing on civic issues in cities throughout the state of California. Our focus on digital and social media has also allowed us to expand our reach. Our two websites reach a combined total of 55,000 unique visitors per month and 13 million page views, illustrating just how engaged our readers are once they visit our websites. We now distribute content twice a week to a list of 4,441. Our combined number of social media followers is close to 6,000. Some of our best ideas for engagement and expansion in 2015 have come from you, our loyal readers. As we continue to build a multi-platform newspaper, look for new additions to the Brown Publishing & Communications family of properties including a weekly podcast, a book club, and projects like Fatherhood 365, a campaign to promote the important role fathers play in the lives of their children and families and a new project documenting our vibrant senior community here in the Inland Empire. All suggestions from readers like you. Thank you again for your support in 2014. We wish you a healthy, transformative, and engaging 2015. Paulette Brown-Hinds, PhD Photo by benoitmalphettes.com

Common goals included job creation, economic stability, preparing students for the workforce, effectively addressing homelessness, and ensuring that our region is moving in the right direction. “At this critical moment that we face as a county, it’s very important to have a shared vision of the future. We must solve some of our greatest issues and problems, which include bankruptcy, economic decline, high unemployment, homelessness and persistent problems impacting the quality of education in our schools. By coming together and working cooperatively, we can bring more resources to help our constituents succeed and prosper,” said Assemblymember Brown. Following the roundtable discussion, elected

We will draw upon our broad relationships and resources to tackle the highest priority issues facing our communities,” said Assemblyman Steinorth, 40th District. At the conclusion of the meeting, elected members expressed an interest in meeting regularly to develop a comprehensive plan. “It was a professional gathering of newly elected and reelected officials that were able to come together, share thoughts, ideas, visions and create professional relationships,” said Councilman Toro, City of Colton. “It was also an opportunity to strengthen existing relationships for the benefit of our individual communities and the region.” “It was a great opportunity to meet elected officials from our region,” said Colton School Board Member Dan Flores. “I learned that many

E-Cigarettes: Give Your Teen The Gift Of Knowledge Dear Dr. Levister: Members of my family gave my teen e-cigarettes for Christmas. They argue the devices are a harmless form of entertainment.. What should I do? G.W. Dear G.W.: It is said knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family. Consider protecting your son by giving him the powerful gift of knowledge on electronic cigarettes: Are they safer than tobacco? Or are they a high-tech way to hook a new generation on a bad nicotine habit? Nobody knows yet. Research into the effects of e-cigarettes lags behind their popularity. But ready or not, the era of e-cigarettes is here. It’s a booming, billion-dollar industry -- on track to outsell tobacco products within a decade. The number of teens and tweens using these products doubled between 2011 and 2012. They look like the real thing. The end glows as you inhale. As you exhale, you puff out a cloud of what looks like smoke. It’s vapor, similar to the fog you might see at rock shows. All e-cigarettes work basically the same way. Inside, there’s a battery, a heating element, and a cartridge that holds nicotine and other liquids and flavorings. They come in child friendly flavors such as chocolate and cherry. Features and costs vary. Some are disposable. Others have a rechargeable battery and refillable
cartridges. Using an e-cigarette is called “vaping.” Are they safe? The nicotine inside the cartridges is addictive. When you stop using it, you can get withdrawal symptoms including feeling irritable, depressed, restless and anxious. It can be dangerous for people with heart problems. It may also harm your arteries over time. So far, evidence suggests that e-cigarettes may be safer than regular cigarettes. The
biggest danger from tobacco is the smoke, and e-cigarettes don’t burn. Tests show the levels of dangerous chemicals they give off are a fraction of what you’d get from a real cigarette. But what’s in them can vary. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is working to finalize rules that would ban sales of the devices to anyone under 18.

inmyopinion President Obama’s End of Year Press Conference
I
n last year’s final press conference, I said that 2014 would be a year of action and would be a breakthrough year for America. And it has been. Yes, there were crises that we had to tackle around the world, many that were unanticipated. We have more work to do to make Hardy L. Brown sure our economy, our justice system, and our government work not just for the few, but for the many. But there is no doubt that we can enter into the New Year with renewed confidence that America is making significant strides where it counts. The steps that we took early on to rescue our economy and rebuild it on a new foundation helped make 2014 the strongest year for job growth since the 1990s. All told, over a 57-month streak, our businesses have created nearly 11 million new jobs. Almost all the job growth that we’ve seen have been in full-time positions. Much of the recent pickup in job growth has been in higher-paying industries. And in a hopeful sign for middle-class families, wages are on the rise again. Our investments in American manufacturing have helped fuel its best stretch of job growth also since the 1990s. America is now the number-one producer of oil, the number-one producer of natural gas. We’re saving drivers about 70 cents a gallon at the pump over last Christmas. And effectively today, our rescue of the auto industry is officially over. We’ve now repaid taxpayers every dime and more of what my administration committed, and the American auto industry is on track for its strongest year since 2005. And we’ve created about half a million new jobs in the auto industry alone. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, about 10 million Americans have gained health insurance just this past year. Enrollment is beginning to pick up again during the open enrollment period. The uninsured rate is at a near record low. Since the law passed, the price of health care has risen at its slowest rate in about 50 years. And we’ve cut our deficits by about two-thirds since I took office, bringing them to below their 40year average. Meanwhile, around the world, America is leading. We’re leading the coalition to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL -- a coalition that includes Arab
8
partners. We’re leading the international community to check Russian aggression in Ukraine. We are leading the global fight to combat Ebola in West Africa, and we are preventing an outbreak from taking place here at home. We’re leading efforts to address climate change, including last month’s joint announcement with China that’s already jumpstarting new progress in other countries. We’re writing a new chapter in our leadership here in the Americas by turning a new page on our relationship with the Cuban people. And in less than two weeks, after more than 13 years, our combat mission in Afghanistan will be over. Today, more of our troops are home for the holidays than any time in over a decade. Still, many of our men and women in uniform will spend Christmas in harm’s way. And they should know that the country is united in support of you and grateful not only to you but also to your families. The six years since the crisis have demanded hard work and sacrifice on everybody’s part. But as a country, we have every right to be proud of what we’ve accomplished -- more jobs; more people insured; a growing economy; shrinking deficits; bustling industry; booming energy. Pick any metric that you want -America’s resurgence is real. We are better off. I’ve always said that recovering from the crisis of 2008 was our first order of business, and on that business, America has outperformed all of our other competitors. Over the past four years, we’ve put more people back to work than all other advanced economies combined. We’ve now come to a point
VOICE | JANUARY 1, 2015 | theievoice.com
where we have the chance to reverse an even deeper problem, the decades-long erosion of middle-class jobs and incomes, and to make sure that the middle class is the engine that powers our prosperity for decades to come. To do that, we’re going to have to make some smart choices; we’ve got to make the right choices. We’re going to have to invest in the things that secure even faster growth in higher-paying jobs for more Americans. And I’m being absolutely sincere when I say I want to work with this new Congress to get things done, to make those investments, to make sure the government is working better and smarter. We’re going to disagree on some things, but there are going to be areas of agreement and we’ve got to be able to make that happen. And that’s going to involve compromise every once in a while, and we saw during this lame duck period that perhaps that spirit of compromise may be coming to the fore. In terms of my own job, I’m energized, I’m excited about the prospects for the next couple of years, and I’m certainly not going to be stopping for a minute in the effort to make life better for ordinary Americans. Because, thanks to their efforts, we really do have a new foundation that’s been laid. We are better positioned than we have been in a very long time. A new future is ready to be written. We’ve set the stage for this American moment. And I’m going to spend every minute of my last two years making sure that we seize it. Delivered by President Barack Obama

Jan Feb May January 16, 2014 – Davis vs. McCammack City of San Bernardino mayoral candidates Wendy McCammack and Carey Davis have different views on how they will govern the municipality if elected but they both agree on one thing...the future of San Bernardino.
February 27, 2014 – Young, Black and Afraid of “The System” According to Brenda Stevenson, Professor of African-American History at UCLA, recent highprofile judicial cases involving young black men underscore a disparity in the justice system that African-Americans have always been aware of. Contrary to popular belief, today’s young African-Americans are not more skeptical of their value in the eyes of the U.S. justice system compared with previous generations. There is no reignited understanding of civil rights inequities in modern society, nor any renewed sense of duty to overcome systematic failures.
May 1, 2014 - Diversity at UCR: More than Just Talk At a time when university officials are trying to build campuses that reflect the diversity of America, University of California, Riverside (UCR) administrators have bolstered the school’s enrollment among diverse undergraduates and are finding new ways to appeal to prospective students. One of the school’s selling points, African-American enrollment, continues to see modest gains and recognition in the UC system. continued on page 12

But with this growth, disparities in community service programs such as ESL, healthcare, and translating/interpreting services have been long ignored until Cambodian born Rasmey Sam (pronounced Psalm) founded the Asian American Resource Center (AARC) in San Bernardino May 22, 2014 - #OURGIRLS When news about the abduction of 276 schoolgirls reached Simi Ogunleye, she was heartbroken and outraged not only because of the ordeal, but that the Nigerian officials were not as responsive as they could have been, she said. The story had particular significance to Ogunleye, a Nigerian student attending the University of California, Riverside (UCR) whose parents immigrated to the U.S. when she was 5-years-old largely in part to augment her chances of receiving a quality education.

10th Annual Chanukah Celebration
C
lose to 1,000 community members joined the Chabad Jewish Community Center and Riverside’s Jewish community for the 10th Annual Chanukah Celebration held annually on the steps of the historic court house. The event gives the wider community an opportunity to learn more about Jewish culture and the meaning of Chanukah. Before lighting one of the Inland Empire’s largest outdoor Menorahs with the assistance of Mayor Rusty Bailey, Rabbi Shmuel Fuss explained the meaning of the annual tradition, as well as the symbolism of lighting the Menorah candles for eight nights during Chanukah. The ritual, he said, reminds us to take what you have and light up another. The annual festival promotes the spirit of family, community, and Jewish tradition.
