Postscript To The Voice Fire

O

ur new year here at the Voice began with an ending of sorts. The hundred year old building that we called home for the past 7 years was demolished over the weekend. As I watched the powerful excavator tear down the two-story structure, I was surprisingly saddened. I felt like a destroyer of history, forever changing the landscape of that little corner of the world in downtown Riverside, California. Over the past century, the building on the corner of 13th and Brockton has gone from a single family dwelling, to a battered women’s shelter, to a transitional living facility, finally to the offices of the Voice before being destroyed by a fire last July. As I watched the mighty machine shred the original lath and plaster walls, snap the preserved redwood frame, and mangle the aluminum siding that must have been added sometime in the 60’s or 70’s, I couldn’t help but think of all the memories that were made in that place, all the lives that were protected under that roof, and all the celebrations and special occasions that took place within those walls. So I called Eric Slack. Eric had stopped by the building one day shortly after we purchased it and gave us a little history lesson. A direct descendent of William D. Erdice, the builder, Eric reminded me that the Brockton home was the last house built by Mr. Erdice before he moved to Santa Barbara. And while a resident of Riverside Mr. Erdice built four homes, the final one at 4290 Brockton was the nicest of all, a gift to his wife who was tired of moving from house to house. According to Eric, Mr. Erdice would sell the homes shortly after completing the building process. But this craftsman style home, according to Eric, was special. And Mr. Erdice was said to have collected the fieldstones that made up the distinctive elephantine pillars from around Mt. Rubidoux, hauling them down in the only conveyance they had at the time, a horse-drawn cart. And although the one hundred year old building is now only memorialized in photographs and in stories we pass down, those stones will be repurposed, used in another building in some other place. Hopefully carrying the memory of Mr. Erdice, and all the others, including myself, who passed through that space.

onald Foster is secure enough in his art as a clarinet player that he can be selective on projects. Except when composer John Williams calls. Williams, one of America’s great film composers, has built a career spanning five decades. He has won five Academy Awards, four Golden Globes, seven British Academy Film Awards, and 21 Grammy Awards. He ranks second all-time with 48 Academy Award nominations, 11 behind Walt Disney. An associate professor of music for Moreno Valley College, Foster performed on Williams’ latest project, the soundtrack for the movie The Book Thief, which is in theatres. Penned by Australian author Markus Zusak, the book describes a girl’s relationship with her foster parents during World War II. Published in 2005, The Book Thief was on The New York Times Best Seller list for over 230 weeks. Foster said it was the chance to work with Williams that brought him to the project. “There is nothing more exciting for a freelance musician in Los Angeles who wants to do film and television work than working with Williams,” Foster said. “He comes from a school of film composing that is nearly extinct. Make no mistake, I am sincerely in admiration of many other composers in the business—Randy Newman, Thomas Newman, Blake Neely, Alexandre Desplat, James Horner, James Newton Howard, and Hans Zimmer—all geniuses in their own right—but there is something instantly remarkable about being under Williams’ baton. His music is intensely thematic.” Foster, who has worked on numerous movies, is becoming a regular musician on Williams’ projects. The two first worked together on the Indiana Jones movie Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Since then Foster has worked on The Adventures of Tin Tin The Secret of the Unicorn, War Horse, and the re-recording of the NBC Sports theme. Foster recently completed work at FOX Studios on the upcoming movie The Maze Runner. He’s also working regularly on the ABC show Revenge and the upcoming TV show Resurrection. But he’s always willing to take a call from Williams.

Donald Foster on clarinet

“I once saw an interview where Williams mentioned that he spends quite a lot of time on what we consider the simplest of melodies. Think of the famous Jaws music. Has there ever been a time in your life that you can’t remember recognizing the famous low-note motif as the universal signal to get the hell out of the water? It is not easy to come up with a melody that is so instantly memorable and iconic.” In addition to teaching and doing scoring work for film and television, Foster performs regularly

with the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra, the Pasadena and the Santa Barbara symphonies. Over the course of his career he’s received standing ovations, however, he received something for his work on the The Book Thief he never imagined— an on-screen credit. “Soloists with features are often singled out for screen credit, and it usually involves nudging on the part of the composer, the music contractor, and sometimes, the music engineer,” Foster said. “I had no idea that I was even being considered.”

inmyopinion Carey Davis For Mayor In San Bernardino - “Its Not Complicated”

A

T&T has a series of commercials on television where a man sits at a table with small children and asks them a question. One of the children will respond with an answer that is out of the norm for adults but sounds logical to the child providing the answer. Then the commercial Hardy L. Brown continues with “…It’s not complicated.” As I have listened and read information about the race for mayor, I have concluded it’s not complicated. San Bernardino is in court under bankruptcy protection because of bad policies and practices of overspending by past administrations over the years. Now we have former recalled city councilmember Wendy McCammack who says she has nothing to do with those practices but has been recalled from her council seat of twelve years and is in a run off for mayor. As a councilmember she has caused professional staff to leave because she believed she knew more than them and would berate them in public. She has also made sure that certain employee groups would not share in the giving back to the city that has been

Mayoral Candidate Carey Davis

needed to keep the city functioning on budget. I have also noticed she has to abstain from voting on many agenda items because so many businesses have become her clients over the past twelve years. On the other hand, we have Carey Davis who grew up in the community and has raised his family here. He received his education here and believes in this community. He has spent his career as an accountant working for a large firm. You see Carey is a Certified Public Accountant, which gives him the training and experience to follow the money. He understands budgets and the ins and outs of how to set priorities of allocating funds to ensure city services for all citizens. I have met with Carey and he is a very warm and personable individual who is new in the political

healthylivingwith Dr. Ernest Levister

arena, but he truly understands the job of mayor and what needs to be done to get the city back on track. He is a man of integrity and will provide the city with the positive unifying leadership we need. The election of Carey Davis will send a clear signal to the bankruptcy judge and others who want to help San Bernardino city that we are serious about getting our financial house in order. We have already made great strides in correcting the direction of the city by removing two council members and the city attorney so we cannot stop now. To help Carey we also need citizens in the fourth and fifth wards to do the right thing by sending representation that is positive and has the interest of the city and not just their ward in mind. Fred Shorett has demonstrated that his vision is greater than the fourth ward and he is willing to seek out alternative cost savings to provide services to the citizens. His recent actions to look at the cost of fire services, is an example of responsible leadership. He did not say he was in favor of contracting it out but wants to know if the same services can be provided at a cheaper cost. So for me it is not a complicated vote on who should be mayor at this time. Vote for Carey Davis, a Certified Public Accountant who grew-up in the city, and a family man with a commitment to adopt inclusive policies for all citizens.

Gambling Addiction And Problem Gambling

Dear Dr. Levister: I think my husband of 35 years has a gambling problem. He says I’m overreacting. What are some signs, symptoms and treatments? V.E. Dear V.E.: Whether you bet on sports, scratch cards, roulette, poker, or slots—in a casino or online—problem gambling can strain relationships, interfere with work, and lead to financial catastrophe. You may even do things you never thought you would, like stealing money to gamble or pay your debts. You may think you can’t stop but, with the right help, you can overcome a gambling problem or addiction and regain control of your life. The first step is recognizing and acknowledging the problem. Gambling addiction, also known as compulsive gambling, is a type of impulse-control disorder. Compulsive gamblers can’t control the impulse to

6

gamble, even when they know their gambling is hurting themselves or their loved ones. Gambling is all they can think about and all they want to do, no matter the consequences. Compulsive gamblers keep gambling whether they’re up or down, broke or flush, happy or depressed. Even when they know the odds are against them, even when they can’t afford to lose, people with a gambling addiction can’t “stay off the bet.” Gambling addiction is sometimes referred to as the “hidden illness” because there are no obvious physical signs or symptoms like there are in drug or alcohol addiction. Problem gamblers typically deny or minimize the problem. They also go to great lengths to hide their gambling. For example, problem gamblers often withdraw from their loved ones, sneak around, and lie

VOICE | JANUARY 9, 2014 | theievoice.com

about where they’ve been and what they’ve been up to. Gamblers Anonymous is a twelve-step recovery program patterned after Alcoholics Anonymous. A key part of a 12-step program is choosing a sponsor. A sponsor is a former gambler who has time and experience remaining free from addiction, and can often provide invaluable guidance and support. Therapy for problem gambling Cognitive-behavioral therapy for problem gambling focuses on changing unhealthy gambling behaviors and thoughts, such as rationalizations and false beliefs. It also teaches problem gamblers how to fight gambling urges, deal with uncomfortable emotions rather than escape through gambling, and solve financial, work, and relationship problems caused by the addiction.

pointofview Extend Emergency Unemployment Insurance Benefits Now!

I

n the last few days of the year, most Americans were wrapping up their holiday celebrations and pondering the promise of 2014. But millions of Americans who have been struggling the longest to find work in our slowly recovering economy are now facing deep uncertainty and despair instead of a Happy New Year. The budget deal Congress finally reached in December did not extend emergency unemployment insurance benefits for the longterm unemployed and 1.3 million struggling jobseekers are losing those desperately needed survival benefits on December 28. Unless Congress acts immediately in the new year to extend these benefits, huge numbers of struggling jobseekers will be affected: the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimates almost five million jobless workers will lose benefits over the next twelve months. The President’s Council of Economic Advisors estimates that if Congress lets emergency unemployment insurance expire, it will cost the economy 240,000 jobs and impact families with 3.6 million children by the end of 2014. Federal emergency unemployment insurance benefits were designed to be a critical safety net for unemployed workers who have exhausted regular state unemployment insurance payments. During the recent recession the number of unemployed workers unable to find new jobs before their regular benefits ran out has soared. Although the Emergency Unemployment Compensation program had already started phasing down as the labor market improved, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities points out it’s still far too soon to let the program expire

completely since almost two-fifths -- 4.1 million of the 10.9 million unemployed — are long-term unemployed who have been looking for work for 27 weeks or longer. Although the overall unemployment rate went down in November, the proportion of long-term unemployed workers rose from 36.9 percent to 37.3, double the rate in 2007 before the recession hit. This is the first time Congress has let long-term unemployment insurance benefits expire when the long-term jobless were more than 1.3 percent of the labor force. Today 2.6 percent of the labor force is longterm unemployed in our still sluggish economy. New jobs are desperately needed in this “postrecession” economy. One recent example in the nation’s capital paints the picture. Walmart was opening two new stores and offering 600 jobs for which 23,000 jobseekers applied. People desperately want to work! Getting a job at Walmart has become as competitive as getting into Harvard. We don’t know how many of those 23,000 jobseekers were long-term unemployed workers. What we do know is that employers tend to discriminate against those workers and hire people who want to change jobs or have only been unemployed for a short time first. Congress must act to support the millions of Americans and their children who have been tossed around in our stormy economic seas by extending emergency unemployment insurance and focus on creating more jobs. All of us at the Children’s Defense Fund were disappointed when budget negotiators and Congress failed in this budget deal to ask the richest Americans and corporations to pay their

fair share or close even the smallest and most egregious tax loopholes that could fund desperately needed investments in children and poor families and strengthen the American economy. Helping workers without jobs who are Marian Wright Edelman President, Children’s seeking employment Defense Fund should be an obvious lifeline during periods of economic downturn and recovery. In 2012, 2.5 million people escaped poverty through unemployment compensation including 600,000 children. Many families who lose unemployment insurance benefits, especially long-term jobless workers, will face poverty again. They may have to rely on other government supports like the nearly-disappeared Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) which Congress cut in November and the House of Representatives is threatening to slash again by $40 billion as part of the farm bill. Allowing emergency unemployment insurance benefits to expire on top of cuts to SNAP and other programs is cruel and unnecessary and asks sacrifices from those least able to bear it. Please ask your Senators and Representatives to act now to extend emergency unemployment insurance benefits as soon as they return in January to assist those who need help most in this jobless recovery.

Starting small, as a true grassroots community coalition, the San Bernardino Fraternal Feeding Coalition collected contributions from members, families, friends, and others to buy, fix, and serve the food they were providing. here is an African proverb that states: “It takes a village to raise a child;” simply put, it takes more than one person to teach a child the ways of life. But this wise proverb can also be applied to most any situation in life. Take for instance, the recent collaboration of research institutions, innovators, investors and labor for the launch of the California Innovation Hubs (iHubs), designed to stimulate business development and economic growth throughout the state as well as to enhance the state’s national and global competitiveness by stimulating partnerships, promoting economic development, and helping create new jobs around specific technology clusters. theievoice.com||JANUARY JANUARY9, 9,2014 2014 ||VOICE VOICE 99 theievoice.com

The recent addition of the 16th iHub, the Inland SoCal Link, illustrates just how vast the village can be by connecting the County of Riverside, County of San Bernardino and the Los Angeles seaport. This newest iHub promotes collaboration in the advanced manufacturing and logistics sectors for the region. “The Inland SoCal Link iHub reflects the new paradigm shift towards our Southern California economic development. We realize that we can expand the overall regional pool of job creation and industry attraction opportunities by marketing foreign delegations across City of Los Angeles, Riverside & San Bernardino counties together,” said Dr. Imran Angelov Farooq. Dr. Farooq is Chief Advisor to the Inland SoCal Link iHub and facilitated the meeting of stakeholders across Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties. Although the County of Los Angeles is not working with the link, the city and the port are. The SoCal Link iHub is a shared vision of economic development. Dr. Farooq also provides strategic direction for longterm interests of the initiative. Each iHub in the state has a specific focus determined by the availability of the region’s specialized resources. The uniqueness of the Inland SoCal Link iHub is that it will serve to promote collaboration and industry development in the advanced manufacturing and logistics sectors; expand the volume of exports through the Port of Los Angeles that are manufactured

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. featurestory continued continued from page 11 and thrive as a region,” he said. “We hope that through cooperation we can leverage our complementary assets for regional economic development. The Port and the Inland Empire are joined through both the largest logistics chain in the country that transits our areas and the linkage of the related manufacturing, assembly, and service industries that are key to our current economic strength and future development.” “This initiative can provide a vehicle to facilitate joint international marketing, policy coordination and planning for the long – term benefit of our regional economy,” he stated. The SoCal iHub is poised to becoming the pulse of the Inland Empire’s economic development and the “village heads” are the key players in this collaborative and will be responsible in all aspects from economic development, promoting exports, to marketing to foreign delegations. Several key elected representatives are also involved to make sure the needs of the state’s newest iHub are heard in Sacramento. One early supporter of the SoCal Link was

Assembly Member Cheryl Brown who has a committee assignment with Small Business. “This initiative is essential for our community to continue its economic turnaround,” states Assembly member Brown. “The SoCal link iHub is critical to our region. We hope to establish good paying jobs in manufacturing and logistics to help maximize the state’s ability to export goods and materials.” “For decades, California has been known as a place where innovation and creativity flourishes. The SoCal Link iHub is a central feature in the state’s work to catalyze local and regional economic strengths and support private sector efforts to bring forward the next generation in business and industry,” Assembly Member Jose Medina explained to the Voice. “The initiative will increase California’s global competitiveness. This focus on advanced technologies will drive the development of higher wage jobs and support the long-term economic growth of California.” Assembly Member Medina is Chair of the Committee of Jobs, Economic Development, and

the Economy. Joining Assembly Members Brown and Medina is Senator Richard Roth who serves on the Senate Select Committee on California Ports and Goods Movement. Senator Roth was one of the original supporters for the iHub proposal and his office has been engaged from the beginning when the proposal for the SoCal iHub Link was submitted and he continues to stay involved in its development. According to Louis Stewart, GoBiz Deputy Director and head of the iHub program for the governor’s office, “the Inland SoCal Link iHub and the partnerships being formed around it have the potential to provide the state a true insight into goods movement throughout the state.” “I hope that the community rallies behind the Inland SoCal Link iHub and innovation at large because it is what California is made of. It would be great to see new strategies for logistics, manufacturing and workforce development emerge from this iHub,” he concluded.

iesports Spartans overcome Stanford in 100th Rose Bowl Game an old fashioned hit you in the mouth affair Pasadena By Leland Stein III knew this game was going to be a grind it out battle, with the style both play. The Stanford Cardinal and Michigan State Spartans were mirror images in many ways; they each like to run the ball, lock up on defense and pass efficiently. Both the Spartans and the Cardinal each did exactly that; however, MSU had just that little something extra that carried the No 4 ranked team to a 24-20 hard fought victory over No. 5 Stanford. “I was impressed with their skilled players,” exclaimed MSU’s smiling coach Mark Dantonio, “but when push came to shove, we sort of started shoving back . . . I guess you’d say that. Our defense just kept pushing shoving, digging, the entire game. They were special.” “I knew when I got up this morning that this day might be very, very special if we played hard . . . great things were going to happen. To win a football game when you have a minus-2 turnover margin is a statement in terms of how dominant we were on the defensive side of the football.” I think the one thing that pushed MSU over the top is that they had a sense of urgency that spilled over to action on the field. When it takes 26 years to get back to the Rose Bowl game, one cannot measure the extra something the Spartans brought to this game.

MSU’s Mark Dantonio hoists Rose Bowl trophy. - Robert Attical photo

continued from page 17 As if the Green and White machine needed extra incentive. Heck, just getting a chance to play in the 100-year celebration of the Granddaddy of Them All - the Rose Bowl - was enough to fire up any team. However, the early year lack of respect in the polls for the Spartans, the questionable pass interference calls in the Spartans only loss to Notre Dame, and, the undeniable fact the Spartans have only been to three Rose Bowls in close to 50 years - 1966, 1988 and now 2014 added excitement. Also firing up the Spartans were its fans, who

dominated the Rose Bowl grounds and stands, with about 70 percent wearing green in the crowd of 95,173 -- the game’s largest turnout since 1998. The long waits between Rose Bowl appearances was, well, long forgotten at the conclusion of the contest as Sparty Nation reveled long into the night – they were Rose Bowl champions. MSU’s Connor Cook passed for a career-high 332 yards and hit Tony Lippett with a tiebreaking 25-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, which was the margin of victory for the Spartans. Cook also threw a TD pass to Trevon Pendleton, and Jeremy Langford rushed for 84 yards and a score for the Big Ten champion Spartans (13-1), who finished their season with 10 straight wins and their first Rose Bowl victory since 1988. Michigan State overcame its first double-digit deficit of the entire season along the way, and the Spartans’ FBSbest defense capped a dominant season with one more oldschool, smash-mouth performance. “It’s a special time for all Spartans, and we came here in force,” Dantonio said. “I’m very happy for our football team, the resilience we showed all season long.” Michigan State’s defense yielded just 159 yards in the final three quarters and ended it by stopping the Pac-12 champion

Cardinal (11-3) on fourth-and-1 near midfield with 1:46 to play. MSU has long been in the giant shadows of Michigan, Ohio State and even Wisconsin among the Midwest’s top dogs, but Dantonio’s rebuilding project in East Lansing has put them on top of the Midwest this season with a perfect run through conference play. After knocking off the unbeaten Buckeyes in the league title game, Michigan State earned the Big Ten’s second Rose Bowl win since 2000.
